Editorial Sydney might be in another hemisphere and almost as far away from the Costa del Sol as is geographically possible, but a pacesetting initiative by an Australian town hall is as relevant as if its residents were just a block away. The Inner West Council has adopted a new policy which, according to reports, will remove the requirement for people to obtain approval before pruning or removing trees within three metres of an existing home or structure. Reporting on the policy, The Conversation noted, “Green infrastructure offers significant, economic, social and environmental benefits. Urban greening is particularly important in dense urban areas like Sydney’s Inner West.” The report’s co-writers (two academics from the University of Technology Sydney and one from Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology) listed the main benefits of a green infrastructure: • Improved air quality • Space for social interaction • Stormwater management • Reduction of “urban heat island effect” • Space for urban food production • Improved biodiversity In addition to these highly desirable environmental implications, they added, owners/occupiers can also enjoy personal economic benefits. A study on green infrastructure by AECOM focusing on three Sydney suburbs “found a 10 per cent increase in street tree canopy could increase property values by A$50,000 (€30,000) on average. And the shading effect of trees can reduce energy bills by up to A$800 a year in Sydney. So retaining your green infrastructure – your trees, that is – can deliver direct financial gains.” The writers highlighted the fact that Stockholm shares many issues found in Australian cities. “Stockholm houses over 20 per cent of Sweden’s inhabitants, and is increasing in density and redeveloping land to house a growing population. Aiming to be fossil-free by 2050, Stockholm acknowledges the built environment’s role in limiting climate change and its impacts.” Closer to home, Casa Décor – the Madrid-based interior decoration and lifestyle exhibition platform – has launched a special initiative in advance of its 2020 edition (dates are still to be announced, usually from January to March). “Aware of the climatic and environmental problems we face, Casa Décor wants to take a firm and decisive step towards sustainability, launching the #CasaDecorSostenible campaign, which represents a tangible and firm commitment to the way we build and inhabit our homes. We must act now, in both a small and a large way, in the everyday and in the global.” With many of Casa Décor’s manufacturing exhibitors presenting innovative materials with sustainability certifications and eco-efficiency labels, “it is precisely this work and effort that we want to showcase and bring to light in the next edition”. To that end, the exhibition organisers will be focusing on three key areas… Projects: “Any sustainable action must be based on a project that, from the beginning, optimises resources and energy, with eco-efficient solutions and waste reduction.” Materials: “Products whose life cycle respects the environment in any of its phases will be highlighted – original design, raw materials, production process, packaging, distribution, installation, consumption and, of course, the object’s end-life.” Waste: “Our goal is for the vast majority of products used in the spaces to prolong their useful life after the exhibition closes. We will be guided by the principle of the five Rs applicable to waste management – recycle, reduce, re-use, recover and repair.” All admirable aspirations, as the year draws to an end and environmental and climate concerns remain on the front-burner going forward into 2020...

As the temperature drops and the hours of sunlight are reduced, it is — according to experts – easier to get a healthy and satisfying night’s sleep in winter than during the summer months. Your bedroom is your safe place, where you rest and recharge your batteries in peace. A comfortable bed with a good-quality mattress and bed linen can quite literally be lifechanging so it is well worth the investment.

Carpe Diem’s Vindö adjustable boxspring bed appears almost like it is flying in the air. It comprises the Contour Pocket System offering superlative sleep comfort, and has features such as vibration massage options, automatic neck and lumbar support, and adjustable head and foot rests controlled using the Vindö App. Available from Jensen Store in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana (www. jensenstore.com) and BoConcept Plus Store on the Mijas Road and at C. de Negocios Oasis in Marbella (www.plusstore.es).

LOVING the Outdoors Research suggests that spending time outdoors is good for us, boosting our mental health, regulating blood pressure and decreasing the risk of cancer. Journalist Florence Williams wrote a book called “Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative” which notes that spending time in a natural environment benefits us mentally and physically. With this in mind, our outdoor areas are very important to us, and choosing the right furniture should be well thought-out so that we feel comfortable while enjoying our natural surroundings.

STEPPING UP to the Table

Now we are coming into the festive season, we are more focused on our kitchen and tableware. After all, we have to impress our guests at the table! At this time of the year we either dust-off the tableware we only use for those special occasions or invest in some more; as well as obtaining the latest kitchen gadgetry so we can knock-up our creations with minimal stress. Here are some ideas…

to Flaunt It is very easy to forget about floors when contemplating giving a room a facelift, but your flooring might be the only feature you need to concentrate on to give the living space a new lease of life. Whether the room is in need of new tiles, laminate or wooden flooring, or simply a statement rug that will add focus and warmth, upgrading what you have underfoot could be exactly what a tired room has been crying out for.

YOUR PROFESSIONAL IN STRETCHED CEILINGS

Now winter is drawing in, lighting is more important than ever. Lighting sets the mood of a room, giving it a cosy feel. Directional lighting is perfect for reading, or highlighting specific features such as a painting or a sculpture in the garden. With pendant lamps, there has been a major trend towards incorporating the chord of the lamp into the overall design, as well as mix-and-matching shades and leaving bulbs completely exposed for a raw look. A lighting fixture can also serve as a sculptural feature, adding the wow-factor to a room. Here are some ideas…

COOL LIGHT and Smooth Sounds

Lexon has become well-established as a top brand for timeless collections designed for the home, office, travel or “urban nomadism” – and two of its most popular products are the Mina table lamp and Mino mini-speaker. Created by Andrea Quaglio and Manuela Simonelli, the Mina is a small LED lamp that fits into the palm of a hand. It features two LED light settings (warm and cold) and a dimming function – all controlled by a button on the underside – and is re-chargeable via USB-C (providing up to six hours of battery life). Its design is highlighted by a sleek aluminium base, and it comes in nine colours. With its compact size and original style, Mina can be used as a night light by your bed or as a “candle” on the dinner table. The Mino collection comprises several portable bluetooth speakers that can be taken just about anywhere. Each wireless speaker in the collection delivers an impressive sound and adds a touch of elegance to any room. Mino X is described as “the smallest floating Bluetooth speaker in the world”. It is water-resistant so ideal for lounging around the swimming pool. The Mino L fills an interior space with excellent sound quality, and also delivers on modern style. Lexon is available from Magyk in C/ Lagasca in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.magyk.es).

LOUNGE

Lover Now we are entering into the winter months and the mercury is starting to drop, our living room becomes a more appealing place to be, cosying-up on a big sofa in the warmth. The living room sets the tone for the rest of your home’s dÊcor, and there is a lot to consider in terms of choosing furniture, accessories, fabrics, flooring, walls, artwork, lighting, technology and layout. As this is where guests are customarily entertained and obtain their first impression of how you live, it is essential to get all the elements right to perfectly represent your individual style.

The Magic

of Upholstery Fabric As upholstery fabric is used for re-covering a cushion, chair, sofa, headboard or any other item of furniture, it has to be strong in order for it endure a lot of physical contact. Investing in upholstery for a favourite armchair may be costly so it is important to select the right material for the job, taking into consideration the quality of the fabric as well as the design. Take a swatch home with you to help visualise how it will look in the room. In the meantime, we hope these ideas inspire you…

All fabric shown here is from Portuguese giant Aldeco. The melange of deep blue and green gives a sumptuous and opulent look that is timeless. Flowering

IT UP

Flowers bring natural decorative beauty into the home so it is important to choose a suitable vase to hold our valued blooms. Choosing the correct height and width, depending on where the vase is going to be placed, is key. Also, whether you want to choose a transparent vase that shows off the flowers from the stem to its petals or an opaque model with perhaps a dramatic pattern or an eye-catching shape‌ vases add not only a functional feature but also a decorative one.

Brilliant Ideas for Better Living

The Bright Vision

Bright is a development company that has a radically different approach. Bright creates homes that improve quality of life through pure design – community areas with a wonderful feeling of space, home offices where isolation is not a factor, kitchens that inspire a healthier lifestyle and bedroom suites designed for easy sleep. Although the overall design concept is of prime importance, details – however small they might be – are just as vital like showers with built-in spaces for your bathroom goodies and glass walls that slide away, bringing the outside inside: every detail is important. Bright was set up shortly after its CEO, Michael Rodziewicz, met his counterpart in UDesign, Jason Harris, asking for help in turning his Marbella house into a home. Michael had searched, unsuccessfully, for a cool, contemporary villa that looked as good inside as out, and ended up buying in the traditional Andalucian style. So far, so good... well, good enough. That is, until he purchased a truckload of furniture that should have fitted in, both physically and aesthetically, but didn’t. Creative Director Jason did his thing, and the problem was solved. The Bright partnership was born. UDesign is pure design. A team of 3D specialists works on each project, ensuring that furniture, fittings and lighting – the three principal elements that are often no more than an afterthought – are contextualised from the start. UDesign begins the design process from the inside, designing homes based on how people like to live. As Jason says: “Design is a concept, not a set of drawings. The true beauty of a design is as much in how it works and feels as in how it looks. Design is holistic, and I use the word in its strict sense: it involves feelings of wellbeing as well as pure aesthetics. If design doesn’t work

in a functional way, it’s not good design.” As the first developer to bring designled projects to an area like the Costa del Sol, Bright is a trail blazer. Michael puts it this way: “A great home should improve your quality of life, probably more than any other single factor. Together, we’re making this a reality.” Bright is currently developing two projects in the Marbella area to be launched in the coming months… Vista Lago Residences: a luxury development of 18 designer villas, located 12 minutes from the coast and 15 minutes from Puerto Banús on one of the highest plots in the Real de la Quinta urbanisation. Villa Alcuzcuz: a 1,460 square-metre home, which is Marbella’s first avant-garde luxury house designed and built under Passive House Regulations and Standards. Just five minutes from the coast and 10 minutes from Marbella, it is located in the gated community of La Reserva de Alcuzcuz, on the Ronda road. The architects of Villa Alcuzcuz, UDesign, were honoured at the European Property Awards in London in October. in the category “Architecture Single Residence“. As a winner in Spain, Villa Alcuzcuz will be entered into the next stage of the competition to compete against other properties throughout Europe. Pol. Ind. VISTA LAGO RESIDENCES An excellent positional design allows for views over a lake, La Concha mountain, golf courses, the Spanish coastline to Gibraltar and the continent of Africa beyond, all while sitting in your lounge. The generosity of the individual plots and the carefully thoughtout orientation of each villa ensures complete privacy. Residents will enjoy all the amenities of Real de la Quinta – a privileged situation next to a hotel and commercial zone and very close to the resort’s recreational facilities: artificial lake and beach, lake club, golf course and academy, tennis, spa, shops and restaurants. Rick Volpe, one of the architects at Real de la Quinta, describes the development perfectly: “A high-quality resort that’s sustainable for the environment, completely integrated with nature, transmitting the lively and positive side of Marbella, alongside the innovative and practical ‘smart living’ philosophy of northern European countries.” Each villa will have a self-contained master bedroom suite as luxurious as in any top hotel anywhere in the world, a luxury spa and an option of having a fully equipped entertainment area. Combining custom-designed furniture and world-leading brands with a stunning selection of artwork, a Vista Lago residence is something to be truly proud of.

VILLA ALCUZCUZ Villa Alcuzcuz is a showcase villa, but it has a great deal more to show than any other property of its kind, not only on the Costa del Sol but worldwide. Passive House means energy efficiency and environmental friendliness to an exceptional degree, guaranteeing more than a 75 per cent saving on energy costs (despite its large size), while also providing consistently fresh air throughout the house, structural longevity and the absence of mould. Besides the quality designer furniture, fixtures, fittings and lighting, Villa Alcuzcuz offers an entertainment space that is truly out of this world. Cinema area, sports bar, games area with pool table, VIP seating areas, DJ booth, state-of-the-art golf simulator, fully equipped gym, wellness zone with treatment rooms and relaxation areas… this is a villa that, quite simply, has it all.

A VISION OF CONTEMPORARY COMMUNITY

Living at Village Verde Village Verde is the latest development from Sotogrande SA, located next to La Reserva Club. It is an exclusive community of contemporary apartments (from €460,000), penthouses and townhouses in a tranquil parkland setting. We spoke to Sotogrande SA CEO Marc Topiol about the project to find out more…

Who is behind the project and how did the idea come about? Village Verde is being created by Sotogrande SA, as part of its development of Sotogrande. L35 Architects and landscape architects Scape are working alongside us on the project to create a unique place to live and holiday. The idea came from the need for “multi-family” residences in this area. La Reserva Club and Sotogrande as a whole are known for large plots and exclusive villas, but buyers were also asking for a different kind of property. They wanted something with a sense of community, lots of things to do, a familyfriendly environment and the convenience of a lock-up-and-leave property. Village Verde was born from this need and we’re very excited to present our vision of contemporary community living in this exclusive destination. Alongside the real estate projects, we are creating a wide range of leisure and sports activities offering a quality of life based on discretion and privacy. What has been the conceptual focus of the project? Village Verde is all about creating a sense of community and making a beautiful place which is sociable, rooted in nature, secure, car-free and familyfriendly. It has been developed as a self-sufficient village concept and is our interpretation of the perfect village environment. The manifestation of this concept is the Village Centre. This is a communal area just for Village Verde residents which will be a hub for life in this community and offers many more facilities than is standard in developments

such as these. This includes a gym, indoor and outdoor pools, a kids’ pool, a beach area and a spa zone. There is also a restaurant, a bar, multiple kids’ play areas including a woodland adventure playground, a mini-market and even an outdoor cinema. There will be tennis courts and a croquet lawn, as well as bike trails, a jogging route, a green pedestrian promenade and an outdoor gym to explore the beautiful countryside setting. All of these dedicated facilities are shared between just 220 contemporary properties, for a sense of privacy and security, as well as convenience. The generous 18-hectare parkland plot offers space and a connection with nature which is very unusual for developments of this size. We like to think of it as a green and pleasant land and we’ve designed bike trails and jogging paths to allow residents to explore their setting and get active too. We are already having an excellent response to the concept, with 20 per cent of the first release being reserved in a very short time and a lot of interest from International and Spanish buyers. Tell us more about the specifications and amenities of La Reserva de Sotogrande... Village Verde is located just on the edge of the La Reserva de Sotogrande community, and we’re excited about offering buyers there a chance to use the state-of-the-art facilities we are developing at La Reserva.

These include a championship golf course, a tennis and padel club, several excellent restaurants, fitness and wellness classes, horse riding, polo and a packed calendar of events. During the summer there is even more on offer, as our private beach club and sports lagoon is open from April to September each year. The Beach includes a restaurant, sports lagoon with water sports, kids’ club, lap pool and treatment area, as well as a stunning sandy beach and lagoon area. What makes La Reserva de Sotogrande so special? We are creating a one-of-a-kind residential club here in the hills of Sotogrande. It is designed for discerning buyers who are looking for privacy, exclusivity and a complete set of state-of-the-art country club amenities on their doorstep. Adding Village Verde so close to La Reserva gives buyers more options in terms of properties and communal areas and complements the other real estate in the development. Village Verde is already creating a name for itself with families with children going to the nearby Sotogrande International School and couples wanting a lock-up-and-leave apartment, which still offers all the benefits of La Reserva living.

Natural decoration, palm leaves and cool cocktails… that’s what this refreshing cocktail bar in the hottest area of Fuengirola is all about. The Panda Bar has a long and celebrated history in the town – even gaining a reputation as being somewhat legendary. However, it was time to undertake a makeover and add a trendy and natural touch to its ambience. And that’s where Zoco Home came in, this past summer giving the Panda Bar a major facelift. IS EXTERIOR DESIGN THE NEW INTERIOR DESIGN? Article supplied by Atlas Group

Over the years, landscaping and exterior design has become more and more important, with property owners seeking a beautiful outside space to perfectly complement the interiors. In Andalucía, inside/outside living is perfectly blended and this is why people are paying even more attention to their garden and pool area. According to landscaping professionals Atlas Garden, Marbella homeowners will typically spend between €20,000 and €250,000 on their garden area, a very

close second to dressing the interiors of a property. A harmonised garden will complement the property and give it that “wow factor”. So, what are the latest trends in exterior design, and has it become as integral to our lives as interior design?

164 NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2019

Taste and Style are Everything “Just as they have with the interiors of their home, our clients have very specific tastes and ideas as to how they would like to present their outside space,” explains Alejandro Guerrero, the engineer responsible for pools and gardens at Atlas Group. “Some have a very classically designed home, and so they want to continue this theme throughout the garden. This would typically involve carefully shaped flower beds, olive trees and Cyprus trees. For clients with contemporary architecture, we usually work to soften and complement the modern style with naturally shaped materials such as slate for the paths and planting tall grasses in the beds that will move in the wind to give texture and animation.”

Paving the Way Around 10 years ago, most of the gardens on the Costa del Sol used Casares stone, a rough-cut material most commonly used in walkways. Lately, to complement the contemporary, squareline style of properties, concrete square cut tiles are commonly used. These are available in different colours and sizes to suit the style of the property and conform to the modern theme.

Lifestyle is Important In Andalucía, priority is typically towards low maintenance, low water consumption and using plants compatible with the climate. “The exterior must be beautiful all year round, but it must be adapted to the client’s needs. If the home owner is at the property in the summer only, then the exterior should be looking its best at this time of year. If the home is occupied all year round, then there should always be some flowering plants, some colour and aroma present to make the garden a magical place.”

Trending Pools Just as gardens are vital to the exterior of the home, swimming pools are an important element that must complement lifestyle and taste. Twenty-five years ago, the typical swimming pool in Andalucía had blue mosaic tiles, a mural at the bottom and a simple rectangle shape. Now, just as unique as our tastes, pools can be any shape, colour and style. Atlas Pool see many clients opting for white mosaic tiles in their pool so that the water appears a bright turquoise. The indoor/outdoor living experience is a crucial part of the Andalucian lifestyle, which is why coordinating outside space with the interior design is vital for homeowners and investors alike. END-OF-YEAR PLANNING By Alia Babapulle

Thank you for being with me on this journey through the gardening year. I hope you have enjoyed reading my articles as much as I have enjoyed writing them. Of course, now that we are in the autumn-winter seasons, we still have to think about our plants. This is the time to stand back and take a good hard look at the garden. Are you satisfied with how it looks? Are some plants doing better in one spot than in another place? Anything overgrown? Well, now is the time to take care of all that. Dig out anything that looks old. When you cut a twig from the plant, if it is brown and woody, off it goes, as the plant won’t come back properly. Make room for new ones. Thin out really thick bushes and plant boxes, if something has become really large, maybe transferring it into a bigger pot with good mulch and fertiliser will be a good idea. Splitting the plant carefully before replanting will also encourage regrowth and you will have the benefit of even sturdier plants in the new season. If you have a large garden, rake any leaves and spread them out under trees and large bushes to mulch down. When it rains, dig them a bit to break up the leaves so they decompose faster. I dig fallen leaves in pots into the soil, spread good fertiliser over that and dig a bit more. I never have to do anything more

during the winter months until spring comes along. Pots should be checked carefully; anything looking remotely nasty has to come out. Wilted plants and odd colours all need a careful going over. In general, Mediterranean plants prefer good drainage. In winter it tends to be wet, with waterlogged soil that often leads to their downfall, so try to move plants around if you see they are getting sodden. I have spread cut palm tree leaves over those plants I can’t move out of the rain. You will be surprised how effective this is in keeping them relatively dry. Be prepared to experiment, as many plants can surprise you with their toughness. As I have said many times before, don’t be afraid to move plants around if they don’t thrive where you first plant them. Look and learn from your plants – gardening is a lifelong process. Always look for indigenous plants, especially those which attract bees, our best friend. There is a lot to do in winter to make sure our bursts of colour will be fresh and beautiful in the spring. It’s a lot of common sense mixed with know-how. If you have any questions, please get in touch with me. All the best… I look forward to seeing you again in 2020. Where has this year gone!

HEALTHY WORKPLACE RECOGNITION FOR ACTIU Actiu’s headquarters in Castalla (Alicante) has become just the fifth complex in the world to receive the Well v2 certification. It is also the first industrial building to hold the two LEED and WELL Platinum, accrediting the furniture company’s headquarters as “a healthy and sustainable space that ensures the well-being of the people who work inside and outside it”. Granted by the WELL Building Institute (IWBI) and audited at Actiu by CBRE, the WELL v2 Platinum Certification accredits, through a rating system for buildings and communities, to what extent these spaces have been built to ensure the health and well-being of their occupants, valuing aspects including lighting, temperature and people’s mood. This accreditation follows the LEED Platinum Certification achieved by the company in 2017 in recognition of its technology park’s sustainable architecture. “Investing in health and well-being is investing in life,” explains Soledat Berbegal, Actiu’s advisor and director of brand reputation. “Companies need that dynamism and that human value. And that is achieved by caring for and stimulating people through space. The WELL Certification takes into account physical as well as emotional well-being. And everything to do with the heart and the senses is life. Life for employees and also for companies.” Added head of well-being Pablo Amorós, “Actiu already had a lot of work done regarding all the sustainability principles that were applied in the construction of its corporate headquarters in the technological park in Castalla. There was no doubt that it was very efficient but we needed to provide greater well-being for people in the content, in other words, inside the building. We wanted to set up a more efficient, friendlier and more collaborative space.” These modifications included installing drinking water points less than 30 metres from any work area; implementing measures to promote sport, with the presence of sports trainers and a gym; incorporating health food vending machines; and applying sensors and methodology to measure air and water quality. In addition, operational positions have been updated with the company’s new, more dynamic furniture ranges, facilitating collaboration, communication and comfort. To encourage active habits, height-adjustable tables have been installed on every floor of the technology park and some stations have been equipped with electronic height-adjustable tables such as Power. Meeting rooms have also been equipped with high tables (Prism) and multi-purpose tables (Talent) for more dynamic meetings; while Badminton armchairs provide greater comfort in the reception and collaboration areas. The already existing interior gardens have been reinforced with “green corners” with vegetation, and the windows have been used to maximise the use of natural light and have greater views to the outside. www.actiu.com

LIVING LARGE IN SMALL SPACES Back in July-August, the experts from Guardian Glass provided us with practical tips on how to make our home more comfortable. This issue, they suggest seven ideas for making a reduced home space as functional, practical and habitable as possible. The key, they say, is to understand that – even in just a few square metres – we can have everything we really need close at hand. 1. Goodbye to walls, hello to a relationship between environments… Walls separate, divide, take up space and give a feeling of compartmentalisation which, in small houses, sometimes is best to avoid. Avoid excessive partitions and use the furniture itself as a separator or dividing element. 2. The magical power of natural light and efficient glass… There is nothing better to create a warm and comfortable home than having large windows and glassed-in areas to allow as much natural light as possible, while promoting greater insulation, both thermally and acoustically. 3. Using a material such as glass, also for decoration… Thanks to its performance and versatility, glass is an ideal material for the manufacture of different decorative elements and even furniture. 4. Versatility of spaces… Combining the kitchen with the living room, for example, or the bathroom with the bedroom, is no longer architecturally crazy – and “The Desert House” has proved it. Its design is committed to the complete integration of different essential elements which, when combined, save on surface area. 5. Colour changes everything… Colour is one of the most effective and economical resources to make a small house appear larger and wider. White is, par excellence, one of the shades that works best in this regard. It reflects light and projects it through space. 6. Mirrors to multiply the space… Like transparent materials, mirrors extend the feeling of space and depth, and also project what is reflected in them. 7. The exterior is as important as the interior… The “Desert House” has one of the most impressive desert views in Spain, so one of the main objectives of the architectural project has been to fully mimic the home with its surroundings. Have it enter inside the house and enable guests to enjoy it as an exceptional experience, first hand. www.guardian.com www.deventanasadentro.es www.lacasadeldesierto.es Photos of “La Casa del Desierto” by Gonzalo Botet for Guardian Glass

THE POWER OF DESIGN to Change the World

Visitors to this year’s London Design Festival were able to gain insight into some of the most innovative thinking in the current world of design. The Global Design Forum was “a week-long celebration of design and its power to change the world,” according to the organisers. The series of talks, discussions and workshops was aimed at helping participants gain inspiration from “pioneers who are changing the way we design and live, refreshing their thinking and rebooting their understanding of the power and potential of design as a force for good”. Speakers shared their perspectives on designing for how we live today, and the world we want to inhabit tomorrow. The London Design Festival is a city-wide event that provides a platform for major trade shows being held across London. This year they also included 100% Design, designjunction and Focus/19, featuring work from a local and international network of both new and established exhibitors. In 2019, there were 10 official design districts from east to west and north to south, in areas with concentrations of design activity and events that could be traversed conveniently on foot. Each district was organised locally and independently via the London Design Festival platform. In 2019, new district Kings Cross joined Bankside, Brompton, Clerkenwell, Marylebone, Mayfair, Pimlico Road, Shoreditch (Triangle), Victoria Connections and West Kensington, as well as Paddington Central returning as a Design Route. London Design festival was established in 2003 by Sir John Sorrell and Ben Evans “to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world”.

Since then it has consolidated its reputation as a key date on London’s autumn creative calendar, together with London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival, “attracting the greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to the capital”. This was the 17th year the festival had returned to London, and it also marked 11 years with the V&A as a collaborating partner and the official festival hub. The museum hosted a series of specially-commissioned projects by internationally-renowned designers, with Iconic spaces within the museum being transformed by a curated collection of displays and installations. The V&A is considered to be world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. It was established to make works of art available to all and to inspire British designers and manufacturers, and today its collections span over 5,000 years of human creativity in virtually every medium and from many parts of the world. Welcoming visitors to the festival, deputy mayor for culture and the creative industries Justine Simons, said, “Each year the London Design Festival hosts a truly inspiring programme of events, bringing together designers from across the world and demonstrating our position as an international creative powerhouse. The creative industries are responsible for one in six jobs in London and the festival sends a clear message that London is open to great ideas, creativity and innovation.” www.londondesignfestival.com / www.vam.ac.uk

WORKING TOGETHER IN PARIS

The highlight of this year’s second Maison&Objet exhibition in Paris was a “Work!” theme that focused on the integration of professional and personal settings. “For a number of years,” noted the organisers, “the lines between our working and leisure environments have gradually been becoming blurred, forcing furniture makers and manufacturers to adopt the codes of home décor and develop ranges that meet a demand for mobility, sociability, comfort, personalisation and flexibility.” Covering 1,200 square metres staged by Philippe Boisselier, the Work! zone showcased a creative range of work space design solutions accompanied by a conference programme, a space presenting new finds and ac-

cessories (sourced by Chantal Hamaide), a specific Work! itinerary covering the entire trade fair and a new business-orientated area that hosted more than 500 meetings. As one exhibitor, Bene France director Valérie Ducruet, noted, “By dedicating a specific zone to the services sector, Maison&Objet created a small cocoon within the vast trade fair, perfectly laid out and elegantly staged. In parallel, having the opportunity to meet new contacts during business meetings allowed us to present solutions that were conducive to interaction and collaboration. We would like to congratulate the team behind this first edition for their professionalism and approachability.”

According to the organisers, the event also won the vote of hoteliers and restaurateurs, “who are themselves being confronted with the need to adapt to the changing use of spaces and to design one-of-a-kind environments. The September trade fair featured an itinerary specifically tailored to their needs, accompanied by a series of conferences to help them address the challenges of decorating, equipping and designing each zone.” Maison&Objet also celebrated the work of architect Laura Gonzalez by naming her the edition’s Designer of the Year. “In the same way some conquer summits, this 37-year-old, who trained at the Paris-Malaquais School of Architecture, already has an impressive list of design conquests to her name, including fashionable venues, restaurants, bars, boutiques and hotels.” In addition, the event championed six up-and-coming American talents, which boosted the number of exhibitors (55 brands) and visitors travelling from across the Atlantic. Overall, the international trade fair for the decoration, design and lifestyle sector, held in September at the Villepinte Exhibition Centre in Paris, recorded a slight increase (0.5 per cent) in the number of attendees: 2,762 exhibitors and 76,862 visitors. “This encouraging set of figures in an uncertain economic climate pays tribute to the strategy adopted over the course of the past year: that of organising

the offer into two separate hubs, ‘Maison’ and ‘Objet’, with the aim of making the event clearer and more intuitive than ever.” The September edition (a second one is held in Paris in January) featured a total of 3,137 brands showcasing their latest creations, with 863 exhibiting for the first time ever. Sixty-one per cent of brands were from overseas, representing 69 different countries. Maison&Objet also has a significant presence on the internet. Launched in 2016, the newsletter for the trade fair’s digital platform, MOM (Maison&Objet and More) is sent to 150,000 weekly subscribers, the Instagram account has more than 700,000 followers and the Facebook page is followed by 543,000 people. The biannual event’s international profile also benefits Paris and the surrounding area, with airlines, taxis, hotels and restaurants reporting combined revenues of approximately €350 million in 2019. In September, the effects were further enhanced by Paris Design Week, an associated event held in conjunction with Maison&Objet which attracted 100,000 people to the streets of the French capital. The next edition of Maison&Objet, scheduled to run from 17 to 21 January, is set to focus on the topic “Regeneration”, and will mark the 25th anniversary of the trade fair. www.maison-objet.com

Record figures at the 2019 Hábitat furniture fair were the icing on the cake of a pivotal year for the region. In September, Valencia was named as the 2022 World Design Capital. a promotion project established by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design to recognise and honour accomplishments by global cities in the field of design. In the meantime, the annual Feria Hábitat Valencia has become consolidated as the premier furniture, lighting and decoration fair in Spain. This year was a historic edition, with the most optimistic forecasts surpassed when 33,000 professional visitors attended the fair – 25 per cent more than in 2018. “This balance could not be more satisfactory,” said director Daniel Marco, “both for the event itself and, above all, for the exhibitors. The number of visitors confirms the excellent sensations that exhibitors had been transmitting to us practically from day one. In fact, on the first day we already had a strong increase compared to last year, which made it possible to anticipate results that, in my opinion, consolidate the project we re-launched in 2017 by returning Hábitat to September and strengthening our commitment to regaining its status as a flag-bearer for Valencia and the Spanish design industry in general.” Marco highlighted the “high level and quality of the professionals who travelled to Valencia, especially in the international arena. Foreign buyers have responded well, and we have had more international buyers from more countries than the 65 markets we had planned. In addition, our exhibitors have highlighted the return of stores and top distributors who are back at Hábitat to buy from their preferred suppliers. Undoubtedly, having three pavilions showcasing high-level contemporary exhibitions has prompted distribution professionals to once again choose Valencia to place their orders.” Marco also emphasised the design sector’s commitment to Hábitat in 2019, with the fair doubling its design and avant-garde exhibitions. “This was confirmed by the thousands of influencers, interior decorators, designers and contract professionals who have participated not only as visitors checking out the commercial options but also as an active part of 500 conferences, talks, meetings and roundtables scheduled under the auspices of ‘Ágora Nude’” www.feriahabitatvalencia.com

BENTLEY EXP 100 GT

Sustainable Grand Touring for the Future

Bentley Motors has unveiled its vision of the future of luxury mobility as part of the company’s centenary celebrations in 2019. The fully-autonomous EXP 100 GT, according to Bentley, “sets the benchmark for sustainable luxury mobility that is autonomous and electric… an intelligent car which captures extraordinary human journeys thanks to emotionally intelligent AI and allows them to be re-lived”. Its key features include: · A zero emissions powertrain with up to a 700-kilometre range, “putting sustainable innovation foremost“. · Luxury craftsmanship “with seamless fusion of materials and intelligent curation of technology, and introducing light as a new luxury material“. · Sustainable luxury created through the use of 5,000-year-old Copper Infused Riverwood; Compass exterior paint made from recycled rice husks; 100 per cent organic leather-like textile from wine making; Cumbrian crystal interfaces; British Farmed Wool carpets; and embroidered cotton interior surfaces. · On-board Bentley Personal Assistant maximising comfort by monitoring occupants’ well-being . · Adaptable Biometric Seating and three different configurations. The EXP 100 GT, says Bentley, “is borne from pure Bentley DNA and inspired by the company’s deep understanding of the desires of its intelligent, forwardthinking customers. Beautifully styled, it embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI)

as a means to re-assert the car as a place for creating, experiencing and capturing extraordinary human experiences and emotions.” With its all-electric platform, the Bentley EXP 100 GT was developed to reimagine the Grand Tourer for the world of 2035. “This is a world of shared luxury experiences where passenger and driver enjoy equal status in their enjoyment of their extraordinary journeys. The cars’ presence and impressive exterior proportions are reminiscent of many of Bentley’s historic Grand Tourers but take these luxury hallmarks into the future.” To that end, the meticulously sculpted cabin is luxuriously tactile, with the aim of creating a harmonious environment designed around the well-being of passengers and seamlessly integrated with the the Bentley Personal Assistant artificial intelligence. “The Bentley EXP 100 GT,” says director of design Stefan Sielaff, “represents the kind of cars we want to make in the future. Like those iconic Bentleys of the past, this car connects with its passengers’ emotions and helps them experience and safeguard the memories of the really extraordinary journeys they take.” It incorporates the company’s classic DNA – the R-Type Continental haunch at the rear, the round headlights overlapping the grille in a nod to the Bentley Blower, “and a long graceful body hint at famous models of yesteryear” – while also powering boldly into the future. Made from lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre, the Bentley EXP 100 GT measures 5.8 metres long and al-

most 2.4 metres wide, with decorative features crafted from copper and aluminium, both natural sustainable materials. The new exterior paint colour Compass is created using a special Colourstream pigment that reflects a spectrum of autumnal colours and is both sustainable and environmentally friendly. The pigment is synthetically made using rice husk ash, a harmful bi-product of the rice industry, re-manufactured for the Bentley EXP 100 GT “to reduce the amount that ends up in landfill waste”. A focal point of the exterior lighting is the smart, illuminated matrix grille and Flying B mascot which comes to life as you approach the car, light playing across the grille, through the mascot and along the bonnet central spine of the car and into the cabin itself. “The car literally comes alive.” Inside the hand-crafted cabin, the embroidery pattern of the sustainable textiles and leather complement the pattern of the grain in the naturally-felled wood veneer. “These traditional, tactile materials reconnect passengers with the authentic, natural world around them. “ The Bentley Personal Assistant is a centrepiece of the main console and visualised using illuminated crystal from Cumbria. Ambient lighting can also be modified to re-create a specific mood or exterior environment, while additional effects are delivered through projection mapping onto trim panels, such as door pads. The Bentley EXP 100 GT features air and sound curation that promotes selfcare and well-being in the car, and “creates a physiological, health-enhancing

environment for passengers, promoting increased mindfulness in the cabin. For example, Capture mode on Bentley Personal Assistant brings the external environment into the cabin, creating an open-top driving experience without taking the roof down. It also cocoons passengers – blocking and filtering air pollution in cities.” Next Generation Traction Drive enables maximum control via torque vectoring, applying 50 per cent increased power and 35 per cent less mass for more effective cornering. The battery system will power four motors that offer zero to 100-kilometre acceleration of under 2.5 seconds, a top speed of 300 km/h and maximum torque of 1,500 Nm. According to Bentley, future battery technology will offer five times the conventional energy density, and charging the Bentley EXP 100 GT to 80 per cent of capacity will take only 15 minutes. “Charging is automatically taken care of by the Bentley Personal Assistant. Weight will remain at a remarkably trim 1,900 kg and a range of 700 kilometres will be possible.” The Bentley EXP 100 GT is optionally autonomous. “It manages the driving experience based on the external environment and passenger well-being. This might include maximising an exhilarating self-drive across mountain roads, or disengaging from a stressful, inner-city commute.” Bentley Personal Assistant can curate personal driving experiences, offering points of information along a route, journey suggestions, or available luxury experiences nearby.

BIKINI ISLAND & MOUNTAIN HOTEL PORT DE SÓLLER

Bohemian Spirit in Blissful Mallorca Setting

For even inveterate travellers, this is a part of Mallorca many have not discovered yet. With picturesque orange groves, a backdrop of the spectacular Tramuntana mountain range and next to the Mediterranean Sea, Bikini Island & Mountain Hotel Port de Sóller is justified in claiming to be “perched in paradise”. The hotel features raw handcrafted textures, wooden tables, tiles and multi-coloured woven rugs created to “weave a casual luxury that balances a fine line between hotel, home, and hangout”. Dreimeta’s Armin Fischer was able to renovate the 1970s hotel while still retaining the Bauhaus-inspired original style and creating a contemporary reinterpretation of the bohemian spirit of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Fischer revived valuable materials and surfaces such as old terrazzo floors from the pre-existing building and used new materials that were fitted to look like they had always been there. The result is a hotel characterised by a bohemian aesthetic and contrasting with the classic local style. Bikini Island & Mountain Hotel features an extensive use of wicker, more than 300 brightly coloured ceramic pots hanging low from ceilings to house-overflowing plants, and oversized earthenware – all accentuating this “homage to nature”. The interior design was inspired by “laidback Balearic living and the island’s natural splendour, with every nook and cranny dressed in a joyful blend of colour, pattern and topiary for a lush escape in which the original 1960s San Francisco hippie movement is brought to life”. Attracting both locals and guests, the Molcho family’s Neni restaurant – with hubs in other major European cities – also brings its “east-Mediterranean-meets-balagan style” to the beach resort. The bar concept has been developed by Joerg Meyer, the mastermind of Le Lion Bar in Hamburg; while the poolside Pikkini Bar and Donkey Bar helps guests make a smooth transition from day lounging to energetic nights, highlighted by a “come-as-you-are attitude”. With an outdoor pool, sauna room, and indoor and outdoor massages, plus plenty of spaces for chilling-out, the hotel “entices” guests to stay on the premises. However, for those keen to venture out, it offers customdesigned experiences to enjoy the Tramuntana mountains and surrounding nature. The 114 rooms and suites range from 18 to 34 square metres, all with a king-size bed, balcony or terrace, and either a daybed or a hammock outside. The 18-square-metre Poolside Room includes a poolside deck, the Bayside Room and Bay Suite (18 and 34 square metres, respectively) offer bay views, and the 19-square-metre Bay House Room provides countryside views.

MOMO GOLDEN MILE

28/10/19 11:24

Situated in the charming Calle Tetuán in Marbella’s Old Town, Momo has been well established for many years. As a result of that success, it was only natural that owners Katrin and José María would expand the business and open a second and much larger restaurant on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Home & Lifestyle Magazine visited the Golden Mile establishment to take a look around and try out some of their dishes… When you enter Momo on the Golden Mile, you pass through their attractive terrace into the spacious restaurant. You are met by eclectic décor with warm and cosy velvets and ambient lighting. The tropical vegetation, together with statues of a flamingo and an ostrich coming out of a wall, gives the feeling of being in an exotic oasis. At the rear of the restaurant is their open kitchen, where you will often see owner José María and his team cooking-up their creations. The long bar area to the right of the restaurant could almost be described as colonial in style, with tassel-fringed lamps, a velvet chesterfield sofa and the bar itself wrapped in a wallpaper depicting large bold blooms of flowers. There is a grand piano at the entrance and the jewel in the restaurant’s crown is a beautiful and buzzy conservatory area where they often hold live music.

We tried several dishes from the menu. Its slant is definitely towards an Asian influence with sushi, Chinese noodles, Teriyaki salmon, Thai curry and the like, but there are also steaks, rack of lamb, French duck, prawns pil-pil, pasta and much more, so there is something for everyone. Everything we tasted was of an excellent standard, with fresh ingredients presented creatively on the plate. We particularly enjoyed the gyozas, slowcooked pork belly, salmon and sea bass ceviche, while the king crab and scallop dim sum in a Pernod bisque sauce with Thai basil is a must-try! The desserts are all homemade and exquisitely prepared, offering a good balance of flavours and not too heavy. We tried the chocolate fondant with fresh fruit, ice cream and a shard of white chocolate and, as full as we were at that point, we could not leave a scrap on the plate! You can tell that Momo care about the details, serving piping-hot homemade wholemeal bread with indulgent Beurre D’Isigny butter and crunchy minced pork croquette appetisers. The ingredients that go into their organic salad come from their very own garden, which includes some fruit and vegetables that are very rarely found in Spain. Even the tableware has

been carefully chosen to suit each individual dish on which it is served. The service is very impressive, with plenty of staff on-hand to attend to your every need. We chatted to Momo chef and owner José Maria while he was working in the kitchen and were struck by the unbounded enthusiasm he has for his work. Every plate that left the kitchen was meticulously checked before leaving the pass, and he spoke passionately about the ingredients used in his dishes. We also noted that the prices were very reasonable as the portion sizes were excellent, and the ambience and quality of the ingredients and service, superb. They also offer an Early Bird Menu of two courses for €20 and three courses for just €25 between 6pm and 7.30pm. This venue would be perfect for a private party or function as it can easily accommodate large groups in stunning surroundings. Open Monday to Sunday from 6pm until midnight. For reservations: Tel. Wine Notes ···

Which Side of the Box Are You On? By AJ Linn

Most of us give very little thought to how wine is presented. As far as we are concerned it comes in glass bottles of threequarters of a litre, and that’s it. There are of course variations, particularly for specialist wines, and there are wide national disparities across the globe. Living in Spain, or indeed in practically any southern European country, the small revolution that has been taking place over the last two decades – which affects the way we buy and store wine – has hardly been noticeable. Just mentioning, for example, that in Sweden well over half the wine consumed (reportedly as much as 80 per cent) is sold in a “Bag-in-Box” format may come as a surprise. This method of packaging consists of a cardboard box into which is fitted a plastic airtight container with a small tap for drawing off the contents. The sizes commonly available range from two litres to 15 litres, and the outstanding benefit of the system is that, since air never enters the sealed inner plastic sac, it is possible to draw off any quantity over a period of weeks, or even months, without the wine deteriorating. Put another way, the Bag-in Box, or “BIB”, is the most hygienic and practical bottling method available to wineries, and the strongest defence against fraud (the BIB box cannot be refilled). At the same time it is overwhelmingly environment-friendly and normally preferred by consumers. And while this phenomenal packaging method is in use worldwide and in constant evolution, there is a little island in southern Andalucía that has invoked the power of the law to have it prohibited. Incredible but true. Never in the entire centuries-long history of wine has there been an example of a particular presentation being outlawed at the request of a lobby that believes it is not in the interests of producers to allow it. Should this not be a matter best decided by the regulatory organisations of the trade, rather than by the rule of law? This ridiculous conflict has lasted nearly a decade, and Goliath has finally beaten David. Nor is there any appeal possible, since the decision by the Supreme Court is final, although the Brussels route might be an option if the injured parties get their act together. To its credit the Junta de Andalucía took the side of the BIB-supporting bodegas on the basis that more jobs would be created.

Fedejerez, the trade body that the Goliaths belong to, has always fought to maintain the veto on box-wine, making it clear that its grounds were to preserve the image of sherry rather than allow it to be sold in a presentation that would be undesirable. In a phrase, the BIB has been prohibited for the almost unbelievable reason that it might be negative for the image of sherry. While in France, Italy and most north European countries box wine is accepted as routine, the big sherry bodegas have blocked smaller bodegas in the region from using it. The most hypocritical aspect is that these same big names, among them Osborne, Barbadillo and González Byass, have used this method of packaging for their export wines for years, and in Spain they currently commercialise their other non-Jerez wines in BIB. These same companies have been happily selling their products to E.U. supermarket chains to be bottled and labelled completely outside their control for decades (BOB: Buyer’s Own Brand). Even the five-litre glass containers (garrafas), used locally to transport wine and vulnerable to substitution of inferior wine, are unaffected by the legal ruling. It really looks as if no-one, except the small producers affected by the ban, and the drinking public of course, wants sherry to be sold in anything but standard glass bottles. While these lunatic goings-on cause most people to question the sanity of those who are responsible for marketing sherry, on the other side of the globe, where the BIB was invented, there is another sort of campaign to have it forbidden. Australia has this dubious distinction. After 50 years of happy outof-the-box drinking, the BIB is being blamed for irresponsible over-consumption. Essentially the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists want taxes on box wine to be increased to a level that will discourage young people from buying it. But, as many Aussies believe, if you’re set on drinking lots of wine for the night, you’re going to do it no matter what. You have the option of either lugging home a big box stuffed with multiple standard-size bottles, or buying the giant-size multi-bottle BIB. As they say down under, which side of the box are you on?

How to Have an Epic 2020?

188 NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2019

Health & Beauty HL66.indd 188

28/10/19 11:37

What can possibly make the beginning of the new decade different? Well, you will need the powerful engine that can take you towards success and accomplishment in all areas of your life: motivation. And sorry, you can’t order it in a box with a ribbon from Amazon. What is motivation and why are some people highly motivated and some not? Motivation is the inner complex force that drives us to achieve our most difficult and satisfying results. It is a clear indication of a person’s willingness to pounce on an opportunity. This could be buying a sports car, losing weight or starting a new business. Every Christmas we enthusiastically write exiting goals and dreams for the New Year, and before we shake off that expensive gorging and hangover we are back to our old routine. How many times have you paid for a new gym membership, planned guitar lessons or decided to write a book? And then you quit – or sometimes you don’t even start. I truly believe that, just like learning to drive a car, we can all be taught to stay motivated by applying some gradual changes in our daily routine. Healthy habits are developed the same way as unhealthy ones – through practice. Good sleep, healthy diet and exercise will increase your energy and help you have clear and more positive thoughts, as well as a lot more desire and enthusiasm to stay focused on your goals. Visualising your results will keep you motivated and help you to gradually change your mindset and beginning to think like that better version of yourself. Taking small steps and focusing your attention on the daily results will stop you from becoming overwhelmed by the time frame of your final bigger picture. Enjoy and celebrate the moments of little progress to make your journey part of your final success. Failure is the biggest and most dangerous dream-stealer of new achievements and motivation. If you eat that chocolate muffin you used to have every morning, or skip a few guitar lessons, or spend some of your savings, don’t yet throw in the towel and beat yourself for giving up so soon. Just accept the facts that old habits are hard to break. Learning from failure will make you stronger and teach you how to get back on your feet. Becoming more motivated will help you grow as a person and fulfil your life. You will experience a holistic change in all aspects, mental physical and social. Now, it is entirely up to you to choose your purpose in life and try a new approach, or watch others succeed while looking for the perfect excuse why you didn’t. Just remember, “A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing grows there.” Time is ticking my friend and, no matter how you choose to spend it, the next year will be around the corner. If you are lacking something and missing the mojo, seek some help. I’m choosing to think that 2020 will be awesome and will do all my best for 366, yes 366, days to make it epic. Have a wonderful Christmas holiday. VAPING

Controversy By Rachel Garrod

Since I am writing this article in October, more commonly known now as “Stoptober”, I thought it was worth considering the discussion we are presently having around vaping. Vaping refers to the use of electronic cigarettes which mimics smoking but without burning tobacco. The vaporised product from an e-cigarette typically contains nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, flavourings and other chemicals. At present there is very little-long term data concerning the adverse effects of regular vaping. Short-term studies suggest that vaping may be less harmful than smoking cigarettes or cigars, but in light of a number of recent deaths in the U.S. attributed to vaping there is concern even over this statement. As of 9 October there had been 23 vaping-related deaths. It is important to note that most (but not all) of these cases involved vaping THC, the active agent ingredient in marijuana. The Food and Drug Agency were worried enough to bring out new guidance concerning vaping. They reinforced the importance of using e-cigarettes bought only from a reputable source (many deaths were linked to products bought off the street) and to avoid vaping

THC. They also strongly recommended that young adults and pregnant women should not vape under any circumstance. All sounding a bit scary, isn’t it? I guess we should have known it was too good to be true! But the real sadness is that, with help, quitting smoking entirely – without vaping or using nicotine replacement products – is possible (and even easy). Here in Marbella I run a successful stop smoking programme that uses the herbal supplement Cytisine, which effectively reduces the urge to smoke. Cytisine combined with behavioural support and relaxation/hypnotherapy improves your chances of success five times compared with willpower alone. There is clear evidence that the most effective way to quit smoking is with expert behavioural support combined with stop smoking aids. If you want to stop smoking why not give me a call and get some help. This could truly be your “Stoptober”. Rachel Garrod, Ph.D. provides physiotherapy for people with chronic health problems and is a stop smoking counsellor. Tel. (+34) 652 281 122 / rachelgarrod1@gmail.com

Diagnosing Depression

...and Motion-Detection for Smart Vision Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

A HAIR SAMPLE COULD DIAGNOSE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS It’s possible that a lock of hair can be used to help diagnose depression and monitor the effects of treatment, according to a new American study. Researchers looked for potential relationships between the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in the hair and adolescents’ depression symptoms and found a surprising connection. Not only did high cortisol levels correspond to a higher likelihood of depression, but there was also a connection between low cortisol levels and mental health struggles. Though many researchers have used cortisol measures in mental health studies in the last decade, few have looked at the stress hormone as a predictor of depression. Study investigator Jodi Ford, who is an associate professor of nursing at Ohio State University, said a biomarker-based test for depression would be valuable, particularly in children and teens. “This study opens up a lot of future research questions and illustrates that the relationship between cortisol levels and depression isn’t necessarily a linear one,” Ford said. “It may be that low cortisol is bad and high cortisol is bad and there’s a middle level that is normal.” The study included 432 adolescents (11 to 17 years old), who are part of the larger ongoing study. For the cortisol study, the researchers measured depression with a nine-item questionnaire that the participants filled out. They were asked to rate their experience in a variety of areas, including how often they feel that their life has been a failure or that people have been unfriendly to them. In most cases, the researchers examined a three-centimetre hair sample, which was enough to assess cortisol levels for the previous three months. Ford said it’s possible that cortisol testing could serve not just as a detection tool, but as a way to watch over time to see if therapy and medication are helping someone with depression, or if the mental illness is intensifying and putting the adolescent at risk of suicide. The researchers caution, however, that much more research is warranted before this type of testing could become widely available.

SMART GLASSES MAY HELP REPLACE THE NEED FOR PROGRESSIVE LENSES Just as motion-detection technology is changing how cars are designed, the same is occurring with eyeglasses. Using eye-tracking technology, engineers now have created a prototype for “autofocals” designed to restore proper vision in people who ordinarily would need progressive lenses. Presbyopia plagues many adults starting about age 45, as the lenses in our eyes lose the elasticity needed to focus on nearby objects. For some people, reading glasses suffice to overcome the difficulty but for many people the only fix, short of surgery, is to wear progressive lenses. “More than a billion people have presbyopia and we’ve created a pair of autofocal lenses that might one day correct their vision far more effectively than traditional glasses,” said electrical engineer Gordon Wetzstein, who is with Stanford University in California. For now, the prototype looks like virtual reality goggles but the team hopes to streamline the product. Autofocals are intended to solve the main problem with today’s progressive lenses, which require the wearer to align their head to focus in a narrow area. The prototype works much like the lens of the eye, with fluid-filled lenses that bulge and thin as the field of vision changes. It also includes eye-tracking sensors that triangulate where a person is looking and determine the precise distance to the object. The team did not invent these lenses or eye-trackers, but they developed the software system that harnesses this eye-tracking data to keep the fluid-filled lenses in constant and perfect focus. To validate the approach, the researchers tested the prototype in 56 adults with presbyopia. Test subjects said the autofocus lenses performed better and faster at reading and other tasks. Wearers also tended to prefer the autofocal glasses to the experience of progressive lenses. The next step will be to downsize the technology. Wetzstein thinks it may take a few years to develop autofocal glasses that are lightweight, energy-efficient and stylish. But he is convinced that autofocals are the future of vision correction. “This technology could affect billions of people’s lives in a meaningful way that most techno-gadgets never will,” said Wetzstein.

Innovative Contemporary Art Gallery in Marbella Interview with Sholeh Abghari

Tell us about the concept of your gallery… Sholeh Abghari Contemporary Art Gallery offers a unique space to support and promote both established and emerging artists from the Middle East and around the world. The gallery seeks out the most innovative artwork through a careful selection process targeting pieces which are part of important collections, auctions and art fairs worldwide. Home to internationally famous artists such as Málaga-born Pablo Picasso and drawing from the rich cultural heritage of Andalucía, Sholeh Abghari Contemporary Art Gallery has established the first truly contemporary art gallery in Marbella. Why did you choose to open a gallery in Marbella? I met my husband in Marbella and we started a family here. Eight months ago I gave birth to our first child and I thought Marbella would be the best place to raise a family. Plus, I think Marbella is changing and has a lot of potential to become a major art destination. How did you enter the world of art? I always loved art. I started to paint when I was seven years old, and I tried different methods and different mediums with some famous artists in Iran. I bought my first painting when I was 18 years old. I always had a good relationship with the artists and I kept buying for myself and others as well. Later on, I studied art history at Hotel Drouot in Paris, and art and gallery business while curating at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. What exhibitions do you have coming up? There will be many diverse exhibitions from artists of different nationalities in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, we had the pleasure, in October, of inviting 25 selected guests to a private dinner at Sholeh Abghari Art Gallery, including private collectors, interior designers, real estate developers and luxury retail owners among other well-known personalities in the Marbella social and business scene. The main objective was to promote the Iranian contemporary art scene. The event started at 8 pm with a carefully selected assortment of canapés – such as Foie Micuit and Salmon Rillette – in the garden followed by a sit-down dinner inside the gallery, all prepared by a famous chef. The dinner dishes served were Russian Beluga Caviar, wild sea bass ceviche and an assortment of local cheeses, all paired with a tasting of rare Andalucian wines presented by master sommelier David Gallardo. The event lasted all the way until midnight and was very well received by the guests as a new and innovative way of exhibiting art while enjoying a wonderful gastronomic experience. NORTHERN EUROPEAN ROOTS Combined with Strong Emotions

Maiju Tirri is an internationally known Finnish artist and bachelor of arts graduate who, over the past 15 years, has had various solo and group exhibitions in the U.K. (London), Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, France, Monaco and Finland. Her contemporary art pieces are held in private collections in Europe, the Middle East and the United States – with a current exhibition at ES Arte Marbella. Maiju paints large structured abstract paintings: high-quality original paintings featuring great detail, bright, powerful and energising colour palettes, and cool black and white-based Scandinavian natural colours – mixed media on canvas, moulded on a wood frame. She also creates poppet portraits. “Women have so much strength, courage, power, love, compassion and beauty in them,” says Maiju, “and this is what I want to show. It is not just famous people who deserve to have a beautiful and modern portrait done. I want to find the beauty, character and essence of the person I work with. Portrait is a beautiful way to remember the present moment.” (Children’s portraits are also available.) In addition, she creates graphic art, giclée reproductions, pop art, portraits and glass art. Her glass works have an intense sense of ice: glass combined with paint but with an amazing see-through effect – ideal for in front of windows.

Maiju spends her winters in Marbella, where she says she is inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, fascinating Spanish ambience and colourful nature. Finland still has a special place in her heart, however. Winters surrounded by snow and frozen sea, springtime with the brightest light, darkening hot summer nights, and autumns when forest colours explode and often become visible in her art work. “As an artist, my philosophy is to seek and convey the harmony and goodness in my work. My essential mission is to give powerful positive experience through my art. My abstract expressionism paintings portray the world’s and life’s continuous movement and change, coming together as the present and the eternity.” www.maijutirri.com

THEATRE DREAM

BECOMES A REALITY for Antonio Banderas

It has been a long time coming. Four decades after he moved from his Málaga birthplace to Madrid to (eventually) become Spain’s most celebrated international actor, Antonio Banderas is back with his own local theatre and inaugural performance this month (November). The actor, director, producer and fashion designer has actually been back for a while, having bought a penthouse in the city (not far from where Málaga’s other famous son, Pablo Picasso, was born) and – since suffering heart problems in January 2017 – spending more time on the Costa del Sol than Hollywood. Now, his dream of leaving an even more lasting local legacy is being realised with the inauguration of the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in the heart of the city, and a 45-show run of the musical A Chorus Line. Banderas’s Málaga compatriots showed their support immediately. Just 24 hours after the ticket office opened, 20,000 seats had been taken up, around half the total capacity for the season scheduled to run from 15 November to 19 January. Afterwards, unless the theatre management decides to extend this run in Málaga, the show (believed to be the first major theatre performance of A Chorus Line in Spanish anywhere in the world) is due to be taken on a world tour. Set up as a private initiative by Banderas and other entities including CaixaBank – to promote professional productions and performing arts education – the theatre has capacity for 900 people. It plans to host its own and other productions, both national and international, and its programming will be

linked to complementary activities such as conferences, exhibitions and workshops by professionals, sharing their experience with future talents and helping to expand public knowledge of the world of theatre. One of the theatre’s key cultural pillars is its close association with education. To that end, an agreement has been reached with the Málaga Advanced Academy of Performing Arts (Escuela Superior de Artes Escénicas de Málaga or ESAEM) to create a nursery of future actors and a second theatre hall with 300 seats in a multi-purpose structure (mobile stands) for smaller-format projects. The theatre will also have its own bar-restaurant, an additional space for organising special gatherings and presentations, and a new leisure corner in the Soho neighbourhood of central Málaga city. A Chorus Line was a multiple award-winning Broadway musical that premiered in 1975, conceived, directed and choreographed by Michael Bennet, with a libretto by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, and songs by Edward Kleban. The Málaga show is a revival of the Broadway production, co-directed by Baayork Lee (who played one of the characters in the original production, Connie Wong) and Antonio Banderas, with 26 performers on stage and a live orchestra under the musical direction of Arturo Díez Boscovich. The theatre manager is Lluis Pasqual. www.teatrodelsoho.com / www.achorusline.es

TOWARDS NATURE: INSPIRING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS IN MARBELLA In October, Marbella’s Palacio de Congresos brought together nearly 1,000 people for the Towards Nature event, to meet activist Johan Ernst Nilson. As the organisers noted, “At a time where the environmental crisis is a reality, it is increasingly important to raise awareness and start taking action in order to protect the environment and conserve biodiversity. Now more than ever, a change of mindset must be put into effect to improve the situation for future generations. Indeed, the best legacy that can be left to the younger generation is a habitable planet.” Johan Ernst Nilson from Sweden is a major environmental activist and climate change advocate who promotes global environmental education through inspirational talks. The event was organised by the environmental charity Goodwill Meridian Fund together with the agencies Events Couture Marbella and Marie-Noëlle Communication, with support from Marbella Town Hall. All funds raised from the event are being donated to the Foundation MarbellAyuda, for its program to renovate the paediatric area in Costa del Sol Hospital, and to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for its Climate Change program.

Butterfly Children’s Charity

EB International Awareness Day Bringing together organisations from over 112 countries around the world to raise awareness for Epidermolysis bullosa, this global union serves not only to underline the obstacles that children, adults and their families face on a daily basis, but also to show their strength and courage in the face of such extreme adversity. EB is a rare genetic condition that causes the skin to be as fragile as a butterfly’s wing. As soon as a baby leaves the protection of the womb, the lightest touch causes painful open wounds, extending to up to 80 per cent of the body, and leading to a life of disability and severe pain. Over 500 people are affected by EB in Spain and every year between five and 10 babies are born with the condition. DEBRA Butterfly Children’s Charity was created to improve the quality of life for children and adults with Epidermolysis bullosa. This year, in conjunction with EB International Awareness Day on 25 October, DEBRA used the opportunity to publish a manifesto conveying the basic needs for patients and their families living with this condition that are not currently met by the national health service in Spain. The View Marbella

Leading the Way in Efficient Energy and Sustainable Development

Wilma Sierra Blanca is well aware that – at a time when the global warming crisis is at the forefront of people’s minds and has become a global issue – it is even more important to consider the future of the planet and adapt, in any context, to the new direction of sustainability. To that end, the German-Dutch developer based in Marbella is making a breakthrough with its first project in Spain, The View Marbella, which has been designed within the parameters of sustainable construction from the outset. The result is a property development of luxury apartments with the highest energy rating within the certification scale: the blocks that make up the first part of the complex have an A rating, which certifies their low CO2 emission due to the use of renewable energy sources and fuels. In addition, since the design stage, the project has been shaped using an

industrialised construction system that would allow for an energy conservation of more than 35 per cent in homes. The apartments have adopted an open fan shape, favouring the use of natural light in every home in the development and, complementary to the layout, the design of the outdoor spaces has been designed so as not to exceed recommended levels, avoiding light pollution. For Wilma Sierra Blanca, The View Marbella is “a declaration of intent that responds to the demands of the public who are increasingly conscious of eco-construction”. Pol. Expert Advice ···

CASE STUDY OF A

Divorce in Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants The first issue to be addressed when it comes to family law in Spain is one related to jurisdiction. The Spanish state requires a link with those wanting a divorce to be aware of the said divorce. In other words, if your last address or place of last residence is in Spain, you can divorce before the courts in Spain. An amendment to Spanish divorce law was introduced to the legal system in 2015, updating the procedures of voluntary jurisdiction and largely repealing the part of the civil prosecution law of 1881 that still remained in force after the publication of the civil prosecution law of 2000. This includes not only the jurisdictional method (going to court) but also the possibility of doing it through filing voluntary jurisdiction before a lawyer of the administration of justice as well as the possibility of doing so before a notary in Spain. However, in practice, it is advisable to take the first option – that is, to appear before a court in Spain. This is not only, in the long run, more cost-effective, but it also provides a higher guarantee of the resolution of the divorce. Thus, in the case of a resident in Spain, even one of another nationality, who wants to divorce using this method, he or she would be required to hire the services of a lawyer and court representative, because it is an indispensable requirement in accordance with the law in Spain. Together with the claim, the plaintiff ’s representation must be accredited, and the lawyers would need the translated and apostilled marriage certificate and any children’s birth certificates. The economic capacity of both parents would need to be determined in cases where one wanted to claim an alimony for the minors or a compensatory pension under Article 95 of the Spanish Civil Code, if the dissolution of the marriage resulted in an imbalance for one of the spouses. Likewise, a proposal for a divorce agreement and any other document to justify the claims of the parties must be included. Also, take into account the Spanish legislative modification of 2015 that allows – in the case of a divorce in Spain by mutual agreement – for the inclusion of the formation of inventory and liquidation of joint assets in the divorce procedure. In this way, all can be processed by just one procedure, which would otherwise involve three legal proceedings in Spain. Together with the filing of the claim in Spain, it is important to apply for an adoption of measures that involve regulating the custody of the minors, payment of alimony, and use of a house in Spain, among others, for the duration of the procedure until the judgment. Lastly, it is important to mention that, in this type of procedure, both spouses can use the services of the same lawyer and court representative if they agree to a procedure of mutual agreement.
