FROM THE
editor
The 2017 Salone del Mobile in Milan was true to its traditional raison d’être of showcasing cutting-edge tendencies and inventive concepts. This year, however, there was also a significant fine-tuning of its overall direction. The focus was not on any specific colour or individual designer at the 56th edition but rather, noted the organisers, on “increasingly flexible, exacting, almost bespoke products that respond to clients’ specific needs… The desire for personalisation is driving people’s choices more and more, even in the home furnishing field.” This was an admirable recognition of the practical and congruent requirements of end-users – as opposed to the sometimes overly flamboyant and superfluous trends that attract attention and headlines at the world’s premier fairs. The 2017 Salone was essentially, and refreshingly, all about the product: pieces that become representative of everyday home living. This year’s catchphrase in Milan was “Contemporary Elegance” which, according to the Salone, represented a fluctuation between minimalism and functionality, between artisan skills, digital know-how and technological innovation – “sought after for its power to conjure up beautiful emotions and to overcome the barriers of stylistic subdivision. Palpable luxury, not strident, enriched with details that become structural, particular finishes and warm, soft materials.” Back home in southern Spain, with our heads once again full of dazzling new ideas and eager to put them into practice, we are fortunate to have an exceptional and diverse array of home décor and design professionals at our disposal. Many were in Milan in April, staying abreast of global trends – or this year’s focus on “bespoke” style rather than flash new trends – but, most importantly, equipping themselves to offer us products and services that accommodate and adapt to the individual requirements and preferences of our distinctive Mediterranean lifestyles. Straddling spring and summer, this issue showcases some of their most intriguing pieces and styles, from outdoor spaces, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and dining areas to lighting, fabrics, wallpaper, seating, storage, flooring and tableware.

As we are now coming into the summer months, outdoor furniture is a major focus for those of us living in southern Europe and spending so much of our time enjoying life outside – whether it is socialising with friends and family or simply relaxing on our own enjoying the fantastic weather in this part of the world. Comfort and style are paramount and, with this year’s exciting new collections to whet our taste buds, we are spoilt for choice. Many of the Coast’s designer showrooms are offering the latest collections that some of the world’s most talented designers have created for us.

“I have always felt attracted by the patterns of light and shadows filtering through Mediterranean shutters, as well as by the work of certain architects from the Far East who work with wooden slats and bamboo cane. A MULTITUDE OF EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVES TO PLASTIC
R END
S
EC O
Nature & life By Ali a Bab
A pet hate of mine has been plastics. The profligate use of them in shopping has annoyed me for years but thankfully countries have realised that this usage simply cannot go on as it has been. Researching this use in buildings, I came across other good ways of recycling waste products and I am mentioning just a few of them here. The building and construction sector consumes more than 9.6 million tonnes of plastics, roughly 20 per cent of the total European plastics consumption, thereby making it the second largest plastic application after packaging. Plastic pipes, for instance, command the majority of all new pipe installations, with well over 50 per cent of the annual tonnage. This share is still growing. Although plastics are not always visible in buildings, both the building and construction industries use them in a wide and expanding range of applications, such as piping, window frames and interior design. Apart from being used too much in today’s consumer industry, plastics can also be quite useful, mainly for their insulation properties. They provide insulation from cold and heat, prevent leakages and let households save energy while reducing noise pollution. Here are some rather good ideas for alternative methods: One interesting design comes to us from Norway, where over one million tonnes of paper and cardboard is recycled every year. The wood is created by rolling up paper and solvent-free glue to create something not dissimilar to a log and then chopping it up into usable planks. The wood can then be sealed so it’s waterproof and flameretardant, and used to build anything you would normally build with wood. Colourful bricks can be made from old plastic bags which are simply everywhere and are notoriously difficult to recycle in any other way. Recycled bags or plastic packaging are placed in a heat mould, and then forced together to form the blocks. They are too lightweight to act as load-bearing walls, but can be used to divide up rooms or outdoor areas.
Another idea rests on the assumption that animal blood counts as a waste product. This is a potentially offensive idea but, while carnivores are still munching away, they’re wasting loads of animal blood, especially in societies without industrialised food production systems. As it turns out, blood is one of the strongest bio-adhesives out there, as it contains high levels of protein. British architecture student Jack Munro proposed using freeze-dried blood (which comes as a powder), mixed with sand to form a paste and then be cast as bricks. This could be especially useful in remote communities, where blood from animal slaughter is plentiful but strong construction materials are thin on the ground. It is a good alternative to use a waste product as such. Somewhat different is the concept of producing a consumer product specifically so it can later be used as a building material. Many companies today make bottles in cuboid or other tesselative shapes, so they are easier to transport. Thanks to Heineken in the 1960s… Alfred Henry Heineken, owner of the brewery, visited a Caribbean island and was dismayed at both the lack of shelter and the number of discarded Heineken bottles scattered everywhere. He wondered what he could do about this. The company thought of a new brick-shaped design for the bottle, in which the bottleneck slots into the base of the next bottle, forming an interlocking line. Some rather nice wall or floor tiles can be made by combining recycled granulated cork with whole wine corks. This is a pretty useful idea, considering the world apparently consumes around 31.7 billion bottles of wine a year. Another excellent way of using a discarded product after having enjoyed its original contents!

CONTEMPORARY HOMES ARE BIG BUSINESS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL By John Graham
If you have been driving along the coast recently – around Málaga, Benalmádena, Mijas Costa, Elviria, Marbella, Benahavís, Estepona, San Roque and Sotogrande – you will probably have noticed that everywhere you look there are new developments of contemporary design apartments and villas but very few traditional Andalucian style buildings. It looks like a home design revolution is well underway on the Costa del Sol, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Modern design homes are being built all over the world and the Costa del Sol has now joined the club. For decades, apartments and villas on the Costa del Sol have been designed and built according to traditional Andalucian design. Today developers and architects are designing and building modern or minimalistic design homes with contemporary interiors for the 21st century, people are queuing up to buy and even off-plan sales are booming. The real state industry in Spain is highly competitive, especially along the coasts, and developers and architects on the Costa del Sol are doing an excellent job attracting home buyers from around the world by offering the latest in 21st century luxury living. You would be wrong to think that these homes are only for the rich and famous: developers are offering new contemporary homes at affordable prices to suit all budgets.
Architects and interior designers create breathtaking designs, space and openness, floor-to-ceiling windows, double-height ceilings, open-plan interiors and solarium roofs. Contemporary design homes don’t just look fantastic – they are also functional. They are built with the latest eco-friendly materials, excellent energy performance ratings and comfortable living areas, and most are offering smart phone synchronicity. Simple elegance, clean chic design, contemporary furnishings and beautiful landscaping… let’s face it, even if you prefer more traditional Andalucian architecture you cannot deny how stunning contemporary homes can be. Contemporary architecture is the architecture of the 21st century, from post-modernism to high-tech. When you think of top contemporary architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, leading figures such as Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers and Santiago Calatrava, just to mention a few, come to mind. However, you might be surprised to know that the Costa del Sol has some of the best contemporary architects, interior designers and developers in Spain, if not Europe, and they are changing the look of homes on the Coast.

MARBELLA’S LUXURY LIFESTYLE
RECREATED IN PICTURESQUE ÓJEN MOUNTAIN SURROUNDINGS
The state-of-the-art Palo Alto residential complex is being developed in a magnificent natural setting in Ójen municipality, only a few minutes from Marbella. The developers, Round Hill Capital, and award-winning architects Villarroel Torrico are working with Gunni & Trentino on several key aspects of the ultra-select project. This includes advice and collaboration on the choice of all materials needed for indoor and outdoor flooring and coating: i.e. bathroom tiling and flooring, kitchen tiling and flooring, countertops, etc., for the whole residence. Gunni & Trentino is able to highlight the advantages of high-quality materials and prestigious international design brands, while offering customisation options for kitchens, bathroom finishes and floors for each house sold. These options comprise a standard basic proposal, already of high quality, as well as a selection of several upgrades and extras. Packages for high-end design furniture for living rooms, bedrooms and outdoor spaces are available from €20,000. The interesting extras Gunni & Trentino can offer span from an outdoor kitchen, a jacuzzi for the terraces, an individual swimming pool ( for the apartments that allow it), a heated tower hanger to a SensoWash® toilet. A leading global real estate investment company founded in 2002, Round Hill Capital has a proven track record in the acquisition and development of luxury properties. It has invested more than €6 billion in European real estate assets, has developed over 100,000 residential apartments in Europe, and is currently one of the largest landlords in the Netherlands and CEE region. In addition, the company owns and operates Nido Student Living, one of Europe’s fastest growing and leading student housing companies. The name Palo Alto was chosen in honour of the pinsapo tree, a native species in the area that will surround the development, which is located on the outskirts of Ojén and offers panoramic views of the sea and mountains. It will be built on 50 hectares, of which 40 per cent is set aside for green open space.
Round Hill Capital stresses that the project is being developed in accordance with the Ójen PGOU (municipal town planning agreement) and it now has a building licence. Building work is planned between 2017 and autumn 2018, and the total investment is projected at €250 million, taking into account land development, infrastructure and construction. The first of six phases planned in total for Palo Alto will be made up of 60 apartments of two, three and four bedrooms, and 15 penthouses of three and four bedrooms. In addition, the master plan includes a health club for phase one, comprising a state-of-the-art gym, spa, swimming pool and children’s club. It also includes a business centre with a concierge service, plus 24-hour security. The apartments vary in price from €440,000 to €1 million. Palo Alto has already established itself as an ideal destination for those attracted to the area. Fifty per cent of phase one homes were sold in just four months, with buyers from 16 countries in Europe (with a high proportion from Germany and Belgium), North and South America, and the Middle East. Nearly half of the buyers are aged 50-60, with 40 per cent in the 40-50 age range. The majority either have older children or are “empty-nesters”, and they represent professionals from the business, finance, medical and design sectors. According to Round Hill Capital, in terms of preference, the buyers are mainly purchasing as a second home for holidays or to rent out, with a smaller percentage buying as a first home. There are few more stunning locations in Marbella. Situated in one of the municipality’s most ultra-select hillside settings, these exceptional villas offer magnificent south-facing panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea. They are just a five-minute drive from the city centre and three minutes to a heliport ( for private use only), nestled in verdant surroundings with abundant vegetation on an extensive 6,334 square metre plot providing absolute privacy. A true touch of paradise, the properties are highlighted by refined quality standards throughout and a variety of elegantly designed features including high ceilings, limestone flooring and custom cherry cabinetry. The exquisite design of the open-plan and light-flooded interiors leaves nothing to be desired. This is amply reflected in the capacious living rooms with their fireplaces, and the office/libraries, as well as the fully-fitted kitchens and each villa’s five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Other first-class features of the homes include under-floor heating, air-conditioning, double-glazing, alarm, dressing room, entertainment room, store rooms, laundry, wine cellar, service apartment, safe, sauna, gym and pool.
There are some differences in layout, qualities and decoration styles between the two villas, and each property has its own title deed. They can be purchased separately or now – as a rare opportunity – both together. Interview with Ivonne Galvan & Geoffrey Femont from Femont Galvan Designers

26/4/17 14:45
How did Femont Galvan come about? After studying in Milan and London, and full of enthusiasm and boundless energy to create and explore, we were keen to develop a project space where the prime objective was to offer designs of great creative quality. Since its birth, the company’s main objective has been to create unique and tailor-made spaces, meticulously taking care of each and every detail. This creative quality is complemented by the use of excellent raw materials and a team that executes ideas with great care and attention – and, above all, affection. At that time, the Costa del Sol provided us with an opportunity to grow together with the area; Marbella was a cosmopolitan city in full development flow. Tell us about your showroom in the Marbella Club Hotel… Femont Galvan Designers is an atelier studio set up to create customised projects. We believe that each client is unique and therefore we tailor-design a space to meet their needs and desires. In addition to being a laboratory of ideas, Femont Galvan Designers is also a showroom where people can discover their own ideas – being able to buy both small and large articles. It is a space where design lives and breathes. Why do you think people choose Femont Galvan for their interior design needs? We believe that we offer a special concept that sets us apart from the rest. Our customers look for a special touch and excellent treatment, and Femont Galvan Designers offers great care and dedication in the details that really make a difference. You work with a lot of amazing brands… How do you select them? The basis of Femont Galvan Designers’ philosophy is to create spaces that are manufactured using high-quality raw materials, taking immense care with the whole process: from obtaining the materials to the development stage and point of manufacture. In accordance with these principles, most of the brands we work with include a handcrafted process. Brands which follow ancestral traditions can transform family businesses into their own form of design language and legacy. We share a passion for the beauty of creating unique pieces; a passion for the beauty of something created with care and dedication. For Femont Galvan Designers, it is extremely important that each of the brands we choose speaks a unique language for each project, one committed to quality. Where do you see the future for Femont Galvan? Each project is a unique experience, so we are constantly researching and looking for new materials and finishing techniques. Femont Galvan Designers is a company that grows with each project. Our aim is to be able to continue carrying out projects at an international level, offering excellent quality and exceptional service, adapting to the needs of our time, and applying technology that allows our customers to enjoy spaces that are well thought out and more personalised. We are working towards building our own developments, with the same levels of high-end luxury and quality that we offer our clients now – expanding our team without ever wavering in our firm commitment to each individual client. Centred on the overall theme of “Contemporary Elegance”, the 2017 fair also featured a common thread of luxury: “a synonym for precious and theatrical, well-measured exclusivity: the quality of elegance”. Five events were held concurrently at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre in Rho: Salone Internazionale del Mobile, International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Euroluce, Workplace3.0 and SaloneSatellite. One of the key objectives, noted Salone president Claudio Luti, was to provide designers and planners with the opportunity of finding a mixture of creativity and the industrial capacity to interpret and represent it. “In order to preserve and grow our position of leadership, we need to channel our commitment into fostering the ideas and the projects as well as the passion that shines through from the work, the products and the events. We can no longer think in terms of the Salone as just a trade fair, although it clearly needs to retain its commercial function, but the market is asking us and obliging us to keep our sights firmly fixed on creating experiential events that muster emotions and help people dream, leaving the memory of a moment, an object, a meeting or even a business indelibly etched on their minds.” More than 2,000 exhibitors overall, 34 per cent of them from countries outside Italy, displayed their products and services at the fair; and 343,602 people attended from 165 countries. The next edition of the Salone, together with the biennial Bathroom, Kitchen and FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) exhibitions, will be held from 17 to 22 April 2018.

Dream Car
FROM FITTIPALDI AND PININFARINA It had been a long-time dream of racing champion Emerson Fittipaldi. “I have tried for years to explain to others what it truly feels like to be behind the steering wheel of a championship race car. There is adrenaline and elation all rolled into an awe-inspiring inner fulfilment that leaves you craving for more.” Twice a winner of both the Formula One world championship (1972 and 1974) and the Indianapolis 500 (1989 and 1993), the 70-year-old Brazilian unveiled his dream track car, the Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina, at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The ultra-light, all carbon fibre supercar fulfils Fittipaldi’s dream to produce a car “with fierce track-racing capabilities, for drivers of all skill levels”, fusing his own vision, an iconic design by Pininfarina and race-bred German engineering from HWA AG. “The EF7 is an exciting car that embodies Pininfarina’s DNA in terms of style and innovation, Emerson’s championship race experience and HWA AG’s flawless engineering skills,” said Pininfarina chairman Paolo Pininfarina. “Our collective team was able to turn a dream into a driving machine.” Added Hans Werner Aufrecht, founder and chairman of the supervisory board of HWA AG, “In realising the dream of a champion, the result is a car that combines racing technology and breathtaking design with drivability and the highest safety requirements.” Featuring a sleek design underscored by an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio, the supercar’s design theme – that of a shark, inspired by Emerson – finds aerodynamic expression in the vehicle’s flowing, aggressive lines: “assertive yet incredibly beautiful and pure; and a balance between emotion and efficiency typical of Pininfarina’s design work”. The EF7’s “exceptional yet forgiving” handling and performance will be achieved through a powerful V8 naturally aspirated engine, integrated gearbox, suspension and braking system developed by HWA AG, and ultralightweight, all carbon fibre chassis construction with an exceptionally low centre of gravity. The EF7 will have a limited production, with every owner having the opportunity to benefit from personal coaching by Emerson Fittipaldi. Supercar fans and video game enthusiasts will also be able to experience the EF7 in the virtual world, as it will be exclusively available in the upcoming PlayStation4 video game, Gran Turismo Sport.

Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited by owners Filip and Shah to enjoy a wonderfully pleasant stay at The Riad Azure Hotel. This modest but charming two-bedroom establishment is situated in the attractive town of San Miguel de Salinas, near Torrevieja and five kilometres from La Zenia beach on the Costa Blanca. Delightfully warm and friendly, Filip and Shah pay great attention to detail – they simply could not do enough for us. The décor primarily features a Moroccan theme, which provides a chilled-out casual feel to the hotel. The bedroom we were given was light, airy and peaceful, and came with a welcome folder that included in-depth information about interesting places to visit in the area, a comprehensive mini-bar, air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV (with UK channels), WI-FI and a large, comfortable double bed. The Riad Azure breakfast was more like a banquet with croissants, breads, hams, cheese, yoghurt with muesli, strawberries, freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee and an array of teas. The Riad Azure also provides other services such as a multiskilled local beautician/masseuse who visits the hotel and offers fantastic prices to the guests. Filip and Shah organised an evening to try out a Locked In escape room – a new concept in adventure games where you are locked into rooms with other people and together you have to find clues and solve puzzles in order to escape all three rooms within an hour. The rooms are dimly lit with screams booming over the speakers to create a truly sinister ambience! It was a great experience and highly recommended. San Miguel de Salinas is half an hour away from Orihuela, a large municipality spanning 365 square kilometres which is home to many museums and religious buildings. The area can be divided into three different sections: the historical city; its surrounding countryside and the La Pedrera Reservoir; and the coastal area, Orihuela Costa. Notable places to visit are the casino with its stunning tiled patio; the Teatro Circo for its excellent concerts; the Rio Segura which runs through the city and is great for walks; and the Pinar de Bonanza nature park where you can enjoy a picnic and go hiking. If the town appeals to you more, there are boutiques, tapas bars and a market every Tuesday and Saturday. Just 20 minutes from the hotel is Torrevieja, famous for its large salt lakes and an area that has been hailed as having one of the healthiest climates in the world. It is a popular destination for holidaymakers from other countries as well as Spaniards, with many people from northern Spain setting up home there. The beaches and coastline in this area are simply stunning, with fascinating coves, powder-like sand and clear blue waters. The Riad Azure C/. Benicàssim, San Miguel de Salinas, Alicante/Alacant Tel. THE ULTIMATE BEACH EXPERIENCE CHIC TRANQUILITY: BONO BEACH Photos by: Gary Edwards (www.vpcreative.co.uk)
Situated between El Rosario and Elviria, Bono Beach enjoys one of the most beautiful beach settings on the Coast, with its shallow waters and pure sand with hardly any stones. The beach club itself offers a tranquil ambience with chill-out music – ideal for families or those who simply want to relax in the sun. During the summer months it is extremely difficult to park near any of the beach clubs but thankfully Bono Beach offers a valet service, which takes away the stress of trying to find a parking space. Bono Beach extends over three different areas… Out on the sand there is a chillout area with Fatboy beanbags – a great place to chat with friends and lounge on the beach. If you want to sunbathe more luxuriously, the Balinese beds are a must. They can accommodate up to three people and have curtains to provide more privacy or protection from the sun. You also receive waiter service, a fruit platter,
a bottle of house wine and towels, all for €70, while the standard sunbeds, which also receive waiter service, are just €10. Inside Bono Beach the décor is inspired by the Greek island of Mykonos and provides a sense of serenity with aqua blue hues. There is a spacious air-conditioned indoor dining area as well as an ample outdoor area protected from the sun by newly-erected shade sails* that create an elegant and effective shade solution for those dining al fresco by the sea. Their long, well-shaded bar offers a wide range of beverages including cocktails, all made using fresh ingredients. The kitchen is open from midday until 10.30pm every day and offers a fusion menu. Argentinean chef Agustin is a specialist in combining flavours and textures, especially when it comes to oriental cuisine. However, the menu is extremely diverse and you can find the likes of sushi, Bitterballen, seafood,

ribs and steaks, salads, nachos and pasta dishes… the list goes on! To begin our own gastronomic experience, we were treated to the Bono Mixed Sashimi with salmon, sea bass, prawn and scallop (which was all sublimely fresh and expertly cut), together with a crispy chicken salad with spinach and mango. Manager Fernando told us that this salad was his favourite, and we could see why as the chicken was marinated perfectly and the mango and spinach were fresh and tasty with a light drizzle of dressing. For our main course, we tried the lobster linguine and the Nasi Goreng – an Indonesian fried rice dish that comes with chicken and king prawns and several interesting accompaniments. And finally, to finish off we were offered their chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and crème fresh, which was homemade and hugely indulgent! Every Thursday Bono Beach holds a barbecue night with a special menu and live music. Another night not to miss is San Juan (23 June), when there will be a fixed menu with live music and, obviously, a huge bonfire. Note that it is highly recommended to reserve a sunbed or table as much as one week in advance as they do get very booked up, especially on the weekends. Conveniently, they offer many ways to reserve whether it is via their Facebook page, website, El Tenedor, Tripadvisor or simply by telephone. Urb. Costabella, Playa de Arenal, Elviria (Marbella) Tel. High Tea in a Luxurious Setting PUENTE ROMANO BEACH RESORT & SPA
Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited by the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa to enjoy a high tea in the luxurious setting of the Sea Grill restaurant. The high tea is available to everyone for just â‚Ź35, which includes a champagne reception, pot of tea of your choice, fresh forest fruit and sandwiches, as well as delicious chocolates, cakes and biscuits baked by their own on-site baker. Inspiration for the high tea was drawn from Andalucian influences, with the main cake at the top of the tray designed in the shape of a flamenco shoe and the chocolate biscuits shaped like a CordobĂŠs hat. The high tea will be available all year round except in July and August. Reservations are necessary 24 hours in advance. Tel. (+34) 952 820 900 www.puenteromano.com

RECIPE: DUCK BREAST WITH BEETROOT, PARSNIP PUREE AND GRAPEFRUIT (2 PERSONS) FOR THE BEETROOT: 1 large beetroot • Pre-heat the oven to 200C. • Carefully wash the beetroot under cold running water and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut away the leaves making sure you leave at least 2.5 centimetres of the stalk, preferably a little more. • Place the beets in a large, roomy roasting tin, sprinkle with the olive oil, and roll the beetroot in the oil to make sure they are well covered. Sprinkle with sea salt and thyme. • Bake in the pre-heated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the beetroots are soft but not shrunken. • Remove the tin from the oven, then leave the beets to cool. • Once cooled, rub the skin away with a piece of kitchen paper; it should come away easily. I also like to wear a pair of rubber gloves when I do this to stop my hands from turning red. Cut away the root and stalks and then use as desired. FOR THE PARSNIP PUREE: 1.5kg parsnips 1 litre milk 2 bay leaves Salt and white pepper • Put the milk in a pan and start to heat. Once the milk is hot add the peeled parsnip and bay leaves to boil. • When the parsnips are cooked, transfer them and half of the milk to a kitchen blender and pulse a few times. • Season with sea salt and freshly ground white pepper, then add extra virgin olive oil and pulse once more. Leave to rest in a warm space.
FOR THE GRAPEFRUIT: 1 grapefruit • Peel the grapefruit and break up in wedges. • Peel the skin off the wedges. Put aside for serving. FOR THE DUCK BREAST: 1 large duck breast • Pre-heat the oven to 160C. • Score the skin of the duck breast with a sharp knife and season with salt. • Place the breast skin-side down in a cold non-stick frying pan over a mediumhigh heat. As the fat is released, tilt the pan towards you and use a spoon to remove the liquid. • Sear the duck breast for approximately six minutes then turn it over and continue to fry for four minutes • Turn the duck breast on its sides to evenly sear the meat on all surfaces then remove it from the pan. If the meat is not fully cooked at this point, finish it in the oven at 160C for two minutes. • Allow the duck breast to rest for 10 minutes before serving SERVE: Serve with the peeled segments of grapefruit. See photo for an example of serving this dish, or make your own one.

WINE NOTES
Mountain Traditions … AND THE REAL THING
By AJ Linn
There are as many myths about wine tasting as there are about Father Christmas. Many stand up though: if you give expert tasters the same wine twice in a blind tasting competition, it will almost always get different scores. Try blindfolding someone and offering them a glass of red wine and a glass of white. Usually they will not be able to tell which is which. Even skilled tasters fall for this one. Another, slightly harder to prove is that a wine tastes different depending on which hand is holding the glass. So where does all this cant about “I only like red wine” or “I can’t drink white wine with cheese” come from? It is interesting that the first wines to be exported from Spain were overwhelmingly white. The shipping ports for northern Europe and South America, the main markets, were in Andalucía, and white was the colour of nearly all wine produced in the region. We are more than familiar with the statement that Shakespeare put into Falstaff ’s mouth about, “If I had a thousand sons… I would teach them… to forswear thin potations and to addict themselves to sack.” This was back in the 16th century, and practically all wine shipped then was referred to as “sack”. It was naturally sweet and transported in wooden butts, although it was not until the first English travellers began to roam around Spain, later writing books about their experiences, that the possibility of there being other types of wine even began to be considered. The Rev Townsend was a vicar from Pewsey, in England’s Wiltshire, who would have gone almost completely unnoticed in the annals of history were it not for his literary references to Málaga wines. Anyone familiar with 18th century English travellers in Spain, such as George Borrow, Henry Swinburne and Richard Ford, will find frequent references to local wine, something which seems to have been ignored by Spanish historians. Around the same period another famous traveller, French writer Teofilo Gautier, went on record as hating Málaga’s gazpacho (“only fit for dogs”) but he did enjoy the local wine. You did need courage to travel around Spain in those days. The risk of robbery was constant, and “accidents” on the road were common. The food was execrable, and beds had to be shared with fleas and cockroaches – and sometimes fellow travellers. But by the end of the 18th century there were no fewer than 14 foreign-owned wine shippers in Málaga, then Spain’s second-largest wine region. The star product, known predominately as Mountain, had taken over from sack and was very
popular in England and South America. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever, and successive infestations of mildew, and finally the deadly phylloxera, ruined the once-profitable business. Vineyards were abandoned and thousands of agricultural workers became unemployed. At one stroke the region’s principal industry ceased to exist. SENSATIONAL TRANSFORMATION When the first expats arrived on the Coast the only local wine worth bothering with was the sweet stuff, hard to digest in any quantity and not congenial to accompanying food. The subsequent transformation over a few decades has been nothing but sensational. Today every class of wine is made in Andalucía, from smooth Chardonnays to excellent red Crianzas and Reservas. Even the historic Mountain Wine has been reborn, thanks to a few nostalgic and competent local winemakers, not an easy task when the first step was identifying vineyards with vines old enough to have a direct lineage to the original. Well-known local winemaker Victoria Ordoñez has taken 10 years to produce what she claims to be the nearest replica to the original, with her Voladeros. No producer has a monopoly of the Mountain Wine designation, although the controlling body, Málaga’s Consejo Regulador, maintains it is “a dry wine made from the Pedro Ximénez grape, no less than 15º alcohol”. If you scratch around you can discover all sorts of interesting products in this category, but my accolade goes to a family-run bodega north of Málaga, which has shown itself to be more capable than most of using local grapes to produce wines that can be put up against the best of any other region. Cortijo La Fuente, in Mollina, has developed from a sweet wine-producing bodega to one that now has an amazing selection of dry, but fruity, whites, and young and aged red wines, several of which have been awarded prizes. Starting with the Don Pepe dry, an authentic Mountain Wine at the incredible price of €6.90, compared with others on the market costing four times that and, working through the excellent selection of Muscatels and Pedro Ximénezs to the most expensive of the two barrel-aged reds, there is nothing that costs more than €9. Indeed, there are few other producers in the Málaga area offering such a wide variety of local wines at such acceptable prices. www.bodegacortijolafuente.es

Smart Help for Memory Loss … AND SIMPLE TESTS FOR DEPRESSION Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
SMARTPHONES FOR ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS A small study is showing that it may be possible to help a person maintain memory in a whole new way. Using a Google calendar application, researchers were able to maintain prospective memory (the ability to remember to do things in the future) in a patient with mild Alzheimer’s disease. The patient is a retired teacher who had reported memory difficulties 12 months prior to the study. These difficulties referred to trouble remembering names and groceries she wanted to purchase, as well as frequently losing her papers and keys. According to the patient and her husband, the main difficulties that she encountered were related to prospective memory, such as forgetting medical appointments or taking her medication. To help her with her symptoms, Mohamad El Haj, a psychologist and assistant professor at the University of Lille, proposed using Google Calendar, a time-management and scheduling calendar. The patient accepted, as she was already comfortable using her smartphone. She also declared that she preferred the application as it offers more discrete assistance than a paper-based calendar. With the patient and her husband, the researchers defined several prospective omissions in the patient, such as forgetting her weekly medical appointment, forgetting her weekly bridge game in the community club and forgetting to go to weekly mass at the church. These omissions were targeted by sending automatic alerts, prompted by Google Calendar, at different times before each event. The study, which was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, is the first to suggest positive effects of smartphone applications on everyday life prospective memory in Alzheimer’s disease. By demonstrating the positive effect of Google Calendar on prospective memory in this patient, it is hoped this study will pave the way for exploring the potential of smartphone-integrated memory aids in Alzheimer’s disease.
SIMPLE BLOOD TESTS FOR DEPRESSION TREATMENTS It now may be possible to determine which medication is more likely to help a person overcome depression, according to American researchers. “Currently, our selection of depression medications is not any more superior than flipping a coin, and yet that is what we do. Now, we have a biological explanation to guide treatment of depression,” said study investigator Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, who is with the Southwestern Medical Center’s Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care in Dallas (Texas). Dr. Trivedi and his colleagues conducted a study in which they demonstrated that measuring a patient’s C-reactive protein (CRP) levels through a simple fingerprick blood test could help doctors prescribe a medication that is more likely to work. Utilising this test in clinical visits could lead to a significant boost in the success rate of depressed patients who commonly struggle to find effective treatments, according to the researchers. Up to a third of depressed patients don’t improve during their first medication, and about 40 per cent of people who start taking anti-depressants stop taking them within three months. “Giving up hope is really a central symptom of the disease. However, if treatment selection is tied to a blood test and improves outcomes, patients are more likely to continue the treatment and achieve the benefit,” said Dr. Trivedi. The new research measured remission rates of more than 100 depressed patients prescribed either escitalopram alone or escitalopram plus bupropion. Researchers found a strong correlation between CRP levels and which drug regimen improved their symptoms. Dr. Trivedi identified CRP as a potential marker for depression treatments because it has been an effective measure of inflammation for other disorders such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

MONITORING COMMON COLDS…
and Pulmonary Fitness
I’ve read a couple of articles this past month that have piqued my interest. The first concerns proof of something that I am sure many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other breathing problems already know. However, sometimes it’s just as important to raise awareness of things that, although apparently obvious, may not be well known. Johnston ( from Canada) and colleagues decided to investigate whether the common cold was associated with an increased risk of exacerbation (a severe chest infection) in people with COPD. As well as looking at the risk of an exacerbation they measured whether rhinovirus (a virus that commonly causes colds) was present or not. Having a cold was strongly associated with the risk of an exacerbation in patients with COPD, but interestingly the risk remained high even if rhinovirus was not detected. The study was carried out by means of symptom reporting cards, daily diaries where patients reported on levels of breathlessness, temperature, sore throat, cough and change in phlegm. The benefit of daily symptom reporting is that you and your health professional can see at a glance if you are running the risk of an exacerbation (and possibly a hospitalisation). If you have breathing problems, daily recording of your symptoms may help you identify when prompt action is
By Rachel Garrod
needed, and encourage your health professional to recognise the importance of common colds (with or without virus detection) in the worsening of COPD. Monitoring helps you stay on top of your condition, and that in turn helps improve outcomes. The other study concerns the long-term cardiovascular limitations associated with pulmonary embolism (PE). Pulmonary emboli are blood clots in the lung, often caused by a clot in the leg that has travelled to the lungs. In the study 100 patients who had successfully been treated for and recovered from a PE were followed up a year later. Almost half of these scored less than 80 per cent of what would be expected for their age and gender on a fitness test that measured peak oxygen uptake. Being male, overweight, a smoker or younger age seemed to increase your risk of lower fitness one year after treatment. The authors suggested that these patients could benefit from a cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation approach with a focus on improving fitness, as there is no evidence to suggest the lack of fitness is irreversible. So, if you don’t feel yourself one year after a PE, why not approach your doctor or physiotherapist about some additional exercise training?

The 80th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s most famous painting is being celebrated with an exhibition of 150 of the Málaga-born artists’ works from around the world. Titled “Piedad y Terror en Picasso: El Camino a Guernica”, the exhibition will remain on show at Madrid’s Reina Sofia Museum until 4 September. Meanwhile, the Picasso Málaga Museum has announced that it is “ushering in a new era by showing its collection in a completely fresh manner – in terms of both the content and the presentation”. Over the next three years the museum
will be showing 166 works, some of them rarely shown in public before – which, in conjunction with the 233 works from the permanent exhibition, “will narrate the most important episodes in Picasso’s artistic career and provide insights into the themes, techniques and styles that made him the great artist of the 20th century”. On 20 May, coinciding with Málaga’s “Noche en Blanco” cultural evening, the museum gallery will be open free of charge, inviting visitors to view the Picasso works on show as well as the temporary exhibition “Bacon, Freud and the School of London”
Bilbao’s Guggenheim COMMEMORATES TWO DECADES The iconic Guggenheim contemporary art museum in Bilbao is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry, the building radically transformed the northern Spanish city’s cultural and tourist image. Gehry employed advanced software used in the aerospace industry in its construction, which extends over 24,000 square metres and comprises 33,000 reflective titanium panels interconnected with stone and glass shapes. The interior is designed around a spacious, light-filled atrium with views of Bilbao’s estuary and surrounding hills.

Mark Shaw Moments ON SHOW IN LONDON
Opening after London Fashion Week earlier this year, the “Mark Shaw: A Moment in Time” exhibition is running until August at the Aston Martin brand experience centre in London’s Dover Street. Best known for his portraits of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, Shaw’s images of celebrities including Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Coco Chanel, and iconic fashion images celebrating creations from Dior, Balmain and Givenchy, were featured in the pages of LIFE magazine, top fashion magazines of the day and other publications. He died in 1969 at the age of 47, and most of his work was put into storage and remained unseen for over 40 years.

SHUTTERSINSPAIN
Innovative Update of Aluminium Shutters After last year’s successful introduction of the all-new real wood interior and exterior shutter ranges to the Spanish market, it became clear to ShuttersinSpain that the aluminium plantation shutter range was too limited. “High time for an update or, better still, why not replace it altogether?” The company is now pleased to present a complete new take on a classical theme: aluminium exterior shutters but with the class and refinement of their wooden counterparts. As they noted, “No more cheap-looking, ugly, ill-fitted shutters, which spoil the outside of an otherwise beautiful property, but stylish, practical and safe pieces of art.” Tel. news RESIDENCIAS LUJOSAS VITALUX
No Substitute for Passion Getting what you want from your job and your life often takes mental toughness, especially – notes Doris Kavcic – when you live on the Costa del Sol and work in the real estate business. She founded Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L. in 2009, “with a lot of passion and joy”, and in all has 19 years of experience in the real estate business. “When you take this decision, the chances that you will succeed are always there, thanks to the tenacity and stamina of working hard in pursuit of a goal, despite obstacles or setbacks. While talent and knowhow are very important in each business for getting ahead, grit is actually the biggest predictor of how successful you will ultimately be.” This is the reason why, in 2011, Doris began studying (by distance learning) to become a “mental coach”. Primarily for her own development, she says, “but also to lead the company in the best possible way”. Psychology is, in fact, her second passion. “The purchase of a property has so much to do with emotions, you cannot be well prepared enough.” Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L. / Doris Kavcic Tel. CLÍNICA ESTÉTICA CONTUR
Harmonious Holistic Treatments in Elviria The owner of a top dental practice in Elviria (Marbella) has opened an aesthetics clinic next door in order to provide a more comprehensive service to clients. Dr. Karl Wehmeyer, who has been working in Marbella as a dentist at Clínica Dental Dr. Wehmeyer since 1999, opened Clínica Estética Contur in January. Much of Dr Wehmeyer’s work is dedicated to the field of aesthetic dentistry, and in this context his vision is “to make the patient’s smile appear fresh, healthy and vital through the harmonious balance of healthy teeth combined with a beautiful shape and colour”. He opened the new clinic “because a beautiful smile also needs a beautiful frame”. He will continue to dedicate his time to the dental practice while his daughter manages Clínica Estética Contur’s highly professional team of experienced specialists. The philosophy of Clínica Estética Contur is described as being “that of a beauty clinic in which the patient feels safe and well looked after. The aim of the clinic is to work in harmony with the patient, to help them create a personal, natural beauty that emphasises their personality while at the same time preserving their characteristic identity. “All the treatment methods that are offered are non-surgical and are of the latest technological standard. With the help of gentle and low-risk processes, the specialists succeed in achieving a rapid and good result. Further advantages in comparison to surgical procedures are the usually lower costs and shorter downtimes. As a rule, the normal course of the day can be resumed
immediately after the treatment.” In addition to the facial region and body lifting, other areas of treatment include permanent hair depilation, varicose veins, venous diseases, age spots, scars and other pigment disorders. In all cases, the most recent laser technology is used. The team at Estética Contur rely on the IPL Quantum Laser from Lumenis, “one of the most innovative devices currently on the market”. Tel. GOCULTURE IN GIBRALTAR
Inaugural Hotel Art Exhibition by Maiju Tirri
Finnish Artist Maiju Tirri launched Sunborn Gibraltar’s first on-board art exhibition, which will remain on view until 31 August. Currently residing and working in southern Spain, Maiju has had several solo and group exhibitions around Europe and has works in various public and private collections in Europe, the Middle East and the US. “I’m honoured to be chosen as the first artist to display my art collection in this series of Sunborn Gibraltar ‘Go Culture’ events,” said the artist. “It is a brilliant opportunity to bring world-class art to visitors on-board Sunborn and add value to their experience in the beautiful Sunborn Superyacht hotel. “Today’s travellers and business travellers are busy with limited time to visit galleries and cultural events, so it’s a great idea to bring art to Sunborn hotel where visitors are relaxed and can appreciate art with more ample time. The average person spends 17 seconds looking at an art piece in a museum. To understand art it requires time to check every detail and the story behind the painting. When you observe art with concentration and time this gives you an opportunity to see what might not be clear at a first glance”. news FROM TOPTOPSHADE TO ACOOLA
Rebranded Company Expands to Capture Luxury Outdoor Market Leading European shade solutions provider TipTopShade has been rebranded as ACOOLA “to become an ultra-cool one-stop-solution for innovative outdoor solutions”. As part of this transformation, the company retains its motto, “Design, Inspire and Desire”, but relocates to a new private showroom in San Pedro’s Polígono (industrial estate), “where clients can experience exciting new outdoor decorations, furnishings, lighting/heating and shade solutions”. The official launch of the private showroom is scheduled to take place on 25 May, when Yves SireJacob, the honorary consul of Belgium for Málaga province will deliver the opening speech – also marking the company’s 10th anniversary of trading in Marbella. ACOOLA counts high-profile names such as Ocean Club, Nikki Beach and the Puente Romano Hotel as clients. Its aim is “to offer private and commercial customers access to high-end, yet accessible, outdoor products that will add a touch of style to any space”. ACOOLA’s specialist services include 3D renderings, budget planning, scheduling and installation, focusing on quality Belgium design and innovation. Residential and commercial customers can also look forward to a programme of regular talks and seminars from experts within related fields, as well as product launches in the new private showroom. Belgian national and ACOOLA owner Didier Dewyn explained, “Championing high-quality affordable design products is a cause which is close to my
heart. So rebranding TipTopShade as ACOOLA, an outdoor solutions specialist offering pre-dominantly understated Belgian brands, was the logical step. It is our aim to offer residential and commercial clients the opportunity to have some fun with their outside space, without breaking the bank. “Clients who visit our new showroom will be invited to join us for a drink, relax and take a look around at the wonderful possibilities that can transform their outside space. Our multilingual team will be on-hand to explain technical details and we will offer the services of an in-house interior/exterior designer.” Tel. (+34) 661 030 816 / info@acoola.eu / www.acoola.eu

Early Summer Celebrations… with a Jungle Theme
HEART4HOMES
Change the Energy of Your Life
Over the past 12 years Redline Company has always aimed to be a leader rather than a follower, playing a key role for companies requiring the top-class services of an external marketing department. To that end, the Redline team decided to make an early summer start this year, opening their doors to celebrate the official launch of their new jungle-branded headquarters, and inviting guests to “grab their sunnies and get into the vibe” with sangria, cava, cold beers and freshly-prepared canapés. www.redlinecompany.com
Toon Roijers gave a presentation at the Andalucía Lab in April about changing the energy of our homes in order to change the energy of our lives. According to Toon, “There is a relationship between people and spaces, and you can be influenced by the energy of a space and/or the space can be influenced by your presence. When you feel depressed, stressed or irritated, or there is just a feeling of tension, sometimes the solution can be quite simple… letting fresh air in, cleaning or adding fresh flowers.” If the problem is more serious and, for example, related to radiation, underground water or vortex, or if your property has been for sale for a considerable time, Toon might be able to help by rebalancing the Chi of the house.
