Welcome to Love Live Local’s 9th Annual Love Local Field Guide!

Ten years ago, inspired by a love of the people and the places that make Cape Cod so special, Amanda Converse, Jen Villa, and Kate Sheehan started sending a monthly email to essentially help promote and preserve the sense of place that the three cofounders connected to. That was how Love Live Local came to be.

Fueled by that passion and the support of the community, and a dedication to talking about why it is so important to think local first, that monthly email has grown into a movement centered on communicating the importance of Cape Cod’s local businesses to the region’s economic and community vitality.

One of the most important tools we connect people to our mission is the Love Local Field Guide. In these pages we share the stories of local makers, businesses and brands and show you how to authentically experience all that Cape Cod has to offer from the downtowns to the seascapes. We offer the town guides and business listings for you to plan your day trips and nights out. And we share editorials aimed at communicating why it’s so important to the future of this place to support our local businesses.

We hope you enjoy this true celebration of Cape Cod, and all that makes it one of the best places to live, work and play in the world.

Locally yours,

OUR MISSION

Love Live Local is a Cape Cod organization dedicated to community advocacy and educating consumers on the importance of shopping local. Our mission is to foster an economically sustainable, creative and exciting future for the Cape and help all those who love this place participate in keeping it special.

Thank you to our local business advertisers who not only support this publication but also allow us to carry out this mission.

LOCAL MATTERS

If asked why small businesses are important to local communities, many consumers might point to anecdotal evidence like they make them unique and contribute to their vitality. However, both national and local data sources show the importance of small businesses to local communities beyond feel good stories. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses have accounted for 66 percent of employment growth in the United States over the last 25 years, and on Cape Cod the Cape Cod Commission estimates small businesses with less than 50 employees make up 97.5% of the employers in the region. In addition to being important partners in the employment of the domestic workforce, small businesses are also valuable wealth generators for their communities, along with the intangible providing community character. Since launching our Local Matters research series in 2020, Love Live Local has sought to demonstrate and emphasize this reality on Cape Cod.

The first in the series, Local Matters: Measuring Impact, quantified and assessed the impact of Cape Cod’s independent and locally owned businesses on Cape Cod’s economy and demonstrated that dollars spent at locally owned retailers and restaurants generate more local prosperity. The data analysis performed by economics consulting firm Civic Economics found: local retailers and restaurants keep about 2-4 times as much money in the local economy as their national chain competitors; if Amazon’s online sales in Barnstable County had occurred in independent retailers, they would support 125 additional retail outlets and 1,739 additional jobs; and shifting 10% of spending to local retailers would put an additional $112 million in the local economy every year.

Our 2021 research titled Local Matters: Investigating Influence explored why, despite their demonstrated importance to economic health and prosperity, small local businesses consistently face significant challenges in an increasingly corporatized global marketplace.

Love Live Local once again partnered with Civic Economics, to produce a report that focuses not on retailers and restaurants but instead on business and personal service providers and quantifying and assessing their impact on Cape Cod local economy.

With this study, Love Live Local seeks to expand the “shop local conversation” to include business and personal service providers, alongside their retail and restaurant local business counterparts, since they too face challenges due to the proliferation of national chains and ecommerce giants. Local accountants and bookkeepers, printers, and information technology providers face competition from big box chains as well as online services. Fitness centers face national corporate competitors and a growing online marketplace that was intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Local veterinary practices, dentist offices, real estate outfits and funeral homes are getting bought up by large corporations and private equity firms. And the local travel, legal, education, and insurance sectors have all been negatively impacted by the rapid spread of online commerce.

Local service providers like those listed above are an important contributor to the local economy, representing a $1.5 billion industry on Cape Cod and employing 9.1% of Cape Cod’s workforce.

10 LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2023
SPOTLIGHT ON
SERVICE PROVIDERS

Through local business surveys, we were able to gather enough data to analyze the impact of two personal and business service industries: fitness centers and accounting firms.

According to the latest data from the US Census Bureau there are 45 accounting firms employing 536 people in Barnstable County in 2020. The seven accounting firms recirculated an average of 63.2% of their revenue within Barnstable County. This compares to 42.1% recirculation for the largest corporate owned accounting firms. This represents a 50% local premium for the local accounting firms.

Based on the data from the survey, local service providers recirculate 50-85% more of their revenue into the local economy than their corporate competitors.

When comparing these local firms to a virtual or online service, the difference is even more dramatic. There is virtually no economic benefit to Barnstable County when using a business service that is not located on Cape Cod. All that money is leaving the community with no economic impact at all. Local service providers not only generate needed local tax dollars and jobs, but they typically recirculate some of their revenue to other locally based businesses which, in turn, continue the virtuous cycle. This money eventually winds up improving the local community whether it is going to build schools, roads, parks and providing other essential services to make Barnstable County a better place to live.

With this study and its 2020 predecessor, Love Live Local and Civic Economics have painted a clear picture of the value of independent, locally owned retailers, restaurants, hotels and business and personal service providers in the distinctive local economy of Cape Cod and Barnstable County.

Together, with the 2021 Local Matters: Investigating Influence, these reports present a compelling image of the economic importance of Cape Cod’s local business ecosystem and the value of supporting it through purchasing decisions and policy choices.

While chains like H&R Block, Staples, Kinkos, Best Buy and Planet Fitness and online services like TaxAct, Vistaprint, LegalZoom, Geico and Peloton extract dollars from Cape Cod, at local businesses who provide a superior level of service, you get a reverberation of local spending. The extra dollars in

the local economy produce more jobs for residents, extra tax revenues for local governments, more investment in commercial and residential districts, and enhanced support for local nonprofits, and contribute much more to community vitality.

This important research was underwritten by the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod and the Horizon Foundation.

SHOPPING LOCAL

At Love Live Local, our mantra is “think local first.” The concept is pretty simple. When you find yourself in the market for your wants and needs, think about where you can buy it from a locally owned business (either in person or online), first. If you are searching for new outdoor furniture, peruse a home store that is headquartered here on Cape Cod. When you want to spice up your wardrobe with a new summer dress, get in the dressing room at a local boutique. If you need car insurance, call a local agent. Planting a new flower bed? Get expert advice at your neighborhood garden center. Trying to get in shape? Connect with a local gym or fitness studio.

1 3

Think (local) again

No, seriously. You might have to step outside of your usual go-tos or cross town lines, but most needs can be met right here at home. And if you’re still having trouble coming up with a local solution, shoot us a message or peruse our annual shopping guides for more ideas.

2

Go to a chain

Chain stores do employ locals who contribute to our community and local economy. So, they should be the next stop. And if you can find one that is based in Massachusetts or New England, even better (just do a quick internet search to locate their headquarters).

Shop online with a small retailer or brand

These businesses are a local business in another town or city, so they need support too. Often you can find cool things or useful services through an internet search or by consulting a third party platform (like Amazon or Etsy). It’s best for the small business if you buy directly from them, though, so hop off the middle-man and head to their website to place your order!

As

a

last and final resort, purchase the goods and services you need from a large corporation.

But we recognize you might find yourself in a situation where you can’t find what you are looking for at, or with, a locally owned business (this has a lot to do with corporate power + concentration, and whether suppliers have been locked into a relationship with large companies), so what’s the next best option after that? Here’s what we view as the hierarchy of shopping. 4

Large corporate retailers, delivery apps, service providers, and e-commerce platforms have one goal in mind: to maximize their profits, often harming small businesses, people and local communities in the process. It’s best if you think corporate last…or better yet, never.

Need help finding a product or service you want or need locally?

We’re here to help!

The answer could be in these pages OR you could reach out and ask by emailing hello@lovelivelocal.com or tagging us on social media @lovelivelocal

BOURNE , the gateway to Cape Cod, has pitstops aplenty that aren’t to be missed.

You may be just “traveling through” Buzzards Bay, but don’t count this village out! From eateries to outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone and Main Street is a great place to start. For a smoothie or grub on the go, pop into Vela Juice Bar or the Blended Berry, but if you’ve got time to sit and enjoy a meal there’s Mezza Luna, Stomping Grounds Grille, or Krua Thai. If you’d like an adult beverage to go with your meal check out Rod & Rail gastropub or Mahoney’s on Main. For a sugar rush, stop in at Betty Ann’s Dairy Freeze, Mic’s Main Scoop or the 25 cent candy counter at the Old Country Store & Emporium

Walk off those treats under the Railroad Bridge at Buzzards Bay Park before heading over to the National Marine Life Center to learn about their rehabbed marine animals. Grab a bike from Buzzards Bay Bikes or Canal Cruisers and take a spin down the Cape Cod Canal bike path for some mid-day invigoration.

Take Shore Road on the Cape side of the bridge and head to the Museums at Aptucxet to illuminate local history through small replicas, galleries and outdoor installations. Stop at Gray Gables Market for provisions before hitting Pocasset to take in nature at Little Bay Walking Trails and great views at Monk’s Park. If it’s sand and surf you’re looking for, plan a day at Monument Beach or Barlow’s Landing, hit the water on a Cape Cod Canal Cruise or launch your own dinghy from Red Brook Harbor. Keep the good times (and caffeine) flowing at Cataumet’s Daily Brew, pop into Village Trading Company for local goods, or enjoy soft serve over a game of mini golf at Cataumet Light.

For outdoor dining opportunities, find yourself at Lobster Trap or Courtyard, or keep it low key at Chart Room, Parrot Bar & Grill, or Trading Post Lounge. Sweet treats await at Becky’s Bakery and Whistle Stop Ice Cream Shop

FALMOUTH, the Cape’s second largest town, where year-round residents seldom leave and visitors wish they took the beach route to get in.

Begin your day with a cruise through East Falmouth, where you can head to Moonakis Cafe to grab some breakfast before visiting the Cape Cod Cape Verdean Museum to learn about the area's history and culture. After that, stop at Bad Martha Farmer's Brewery or Cape Cod Winery for some delicious local brews and wine.

Seriously, take the beach route into town, and stop by Shipwrecked and Falmouth Heights Beach for some scenic views and beach time. Aquatic Brewing, Tiger Ramen or Betsy's Diner are great options for an afternoon snack or lunch.

Next, head to Main Street for some shopping at Story., Celebrations, Green Eyed Daisy, and Eight Cousins Bookstore. Stop by Gilded Oyster, On the Water, or Eastman's Hardware for some unique finds. Pickle Jar Kitchen and Devour will hit the spot for lunch and Ghelfi’s Candies & Ice Cream and Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium are great spots for sweet treats. For some midday culture, visit Highfield Hall and Museums on the Green, and learn about local feminist history at the Katherine Lee Bates House. Follow that up with dinner at Bluefins, Osteria La Civetta, or the new Shiverick Cafe & Bar before catching a show at Cape Symphony’s Falmouth Campus.

In Woods Hole, take a walk to the Knob and Spohr Gardens for some stunning scenery. Rent a bike at Corner Cycle and explore the Shining Sea Bikeway For more things consumption, throw back a bite Quick's Hole Taqueria, Coffee Obsession, Pie in the Sky or Candy Go Nuts. Wet your whistle at Shuckers, Leeside Pub, and Captain Kidd, all great for waterfront bar-hopping.

Visit Water Street Kitchen or Landfall for some fresh seafood before walking across Eel Pond Drawbridge and explore the Woods Hole Film Festival in the summer. End the day by relaxing at Chapoquoit Beach, Black Beach, or Old Silver Beach with snacks from West Falmouth Market, North Falmouth Cheese Shop, or Eulinda's

Jumpstart your day with java or tea at the cozy Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, a playful and inventive pastry at Eat Cake 4 Breakfast, fresh daily specials on the patio at Cafe Alfresco, or a classic breakfast at The Kitchen Cafe, where fine food and casual dining meet.

Next, head to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for programming on the natural world and walking trails like the Stony Brook Valley Preserve and Wing's Island. Nickerson State Park boasts 1900 acres of terrain great for hiking and camping. Discover local farms like Punkhorn, Chatham Bars Inn, Namskaket, and Halcyon or bring your bike to the Cape Cod Rail Trail which leads all the way to Wellfleet.

Peruse the local shops for the items you need and the ones you really want. The bayside beaches like Breakwater Beach, Paines Creek Beach and Linnell Landing Beach are where you'll catch sight of the infamous Brewster Flats created by the ebbs and flows of the tide, along with some superb sunsets.

Dinner beckons at The Island Blue Crab, OKI Sushi, The Brewster Fish House, Spinnaker, and Chillingsworth if you’re feeling like fine dining. For a bar with live music and a Dead Head vibe, check out The Woodshed.

ORLEANS is the commercial hub of the lower and outer Cape and is a go-to for year round shopping.

Fuel up for the day at Viv’s Kitchen & Juice Bar, Sunbird, The Rail, Jo Mama’s, Whisk, or Hole In One For grub on the go, dip into Friends Marketplace, Cibo Italian Kitchen & Market, Orleans Whole Foods, or Main Street Wine & Gourmet. Take those goodies on a hike at Kent’s Point, a beach day at Nauset Beach, a picnic at the Jonathan Young Windmill or the Meadow on the Cove overlooking Orleans Cove. For less sun-drenched recreation, hit the lanes at The Alley BBQ & Bowling or catch a show at The Academy of Performing Arts.

If shopping is your cardio, head downtown. Main Street will keep you busy with shops like The Sparrow Store, Homegrown Boutique, Vintage in Vogue, Savvy on Main, Oceana, Blake & Co., Stephen Gallant Jewelers, and Wild Water Collective. The new Las Chidas has a groovy, surfy vibe that pairs well with its craft cocktails and street style tacos. For classic American food served with comfortable and casual elegance, get cozy at Mahoney’s or The Beacon Room. Take your tastebuds on a trip at Abroad for global cuisine, Ten Yen for sushi or La Bella Vita for Italian but save room for dessert at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow.

EASTHAM, the first town of the Outer Cape, is known for its expansive beaches, locally loved businesses and cultural sites.

Before a day at the beach, lay a base at the Eastham Cafe, Fairway Restaurant, The Chocolate Cafe, or stop at Laura & Tony’s for a mimosa and a classic American breakfast (or opt for one of their tasty vegan dishes).

Next, find your way to the Cape Cod National Seashore - a landmark known nationwide. Here you can learn about the history of the park at the Salt Pond Visitor Center and find the beginning of one of the best hikes in the area through the Nauset Marsh Trail, by Done Rock, down the Cape Cod Rail Trail to Coast Guard Beach, where you can enjoy the sand and surf.

If you’d rather play indoors, support some local businesses like ARTichoke for fun, funky apparel and accessories, Pure Vita Modern Apothecary for holistic and eco-friendly products, Rugosa Gallery for a nontraditional gallery experience, and Buddha Bob's for all the stones, crystals and jewelry you need to keep your third eye happy.

For more local attractions and activities, play a round at Poit’s Lighthouse Mini Golf, book a private boat tour with Holbrook Oyster, visit Eastham Windmill, home of many community events, as well as Nauset Light and Nauset Light Beach where you can get a permit for an evening bonfire, and cozy up with friends for a memorable night under the stars.

Quiet your midday hunger with tacos from Joey’s Joint, sandwiches and burgers at Basco Grill, raw bar, salads and classic Cape seafood at Caroline’s Bar & Grill and Mac’s Market & Kitchen, or pizza and more from The Red Barn or Good Eats on 6. When dinner time rolls around, Eastham has plenty more options. Casa del Cabo features a diverse menu with a blend of traditional New England and Latin-inspired cuisine, Local Break has something for the whole family yearround, and Brine has a wide variety of global options and cocktails.

WELLFLEET is home to a close knit community that values its fisherfolk, artists and the peace that can be found here year-round.

Cruise through Main Street and Commercial Street to find adorable shops and eateries aplenty. For gifts and home goods, pop into Newcomb Hollow Shop, The Customs House Fine Paper & Fancy Goods, BriarLane Jams & Jellies, Drift, The Jewelry Studio of Wellfleet, Curiouser & Curiouser and Periwinkle. For apparel, browse Up Front Clothing & Gifts, Salt, Nicholas Harrison Gallery, and Sick Day. Both on and off Main Street, Wellfeet has a selection of dispensaries such as The Piping Plover, Terps and Cape Cod Cannabis for adults to enjoy responsibly.

Art galleries abound in this hamlet, featuring Jeff Soderbergh Sustainable Furnishings & Fine Art, Fresh Brook Gallery, Cove Gallery, Left Bank Gallery, Blue Heron Gallery, BHA Galler y, Works Gallery, Off Main Gallery, Marrinan Gallery, Gaa Gallery, Celeste Fine Arts Gallery and Wellfleet Crafts Gallery

Fill up your tummy tank at local favorites like The Wicked Oyster, Box Lunch, Flying Fish, Mac’s Shack, Winslow’s Tavern, The Fox and Crow Cafe, Bookstore Restaurant, BOL, Ceraldi, or The Pearl where you can catch live music. Just outside of downtown find The Blue Willow Fine Foods and Bakery, Bagel Hound, Block and Tackle, Hog Island Surf Lodge and Beer Yard, C Shore Kitchen, PB Boulangerie and Van Rensselaer’s Restaurant & Raw Bar

Get some sunshine or embrace the familiar gray skies of the Cape at Wellfeet's beaches, including Marconi, Lecount Hollow, White Crest and Cahoon Hollow. Roll through Little Capistrano Bike Shop and score some hot new wheels for a ride starting at Wellfleet Trailhead or enjoy a hike to Great Island. Dip your toe into the arts and culture scene at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater and feel the nostalgia at the Wellfleet Drive-in on movie night or wander their flea market. Finally, throw back a Goombay Smash after a day in the sun and dance the night away at the (in)famous Wellfleet Beachcomber.
