The Nutcracker Myth The nutcracker dolls symbolise good luck in German tradition. One popular origin myth holds that a wealthy but lonely farmer, who found the process of cracking nuts to be detrimental to his productivity, offered a reward to whoever could come up with the best solution. Each villager drew on his own professional expertise, a carpenter advocating sawing them open, a soldier blasting them apart, but it was the puppetmaker who won the day, building a strongjawed, lever-mouthed doll.

FREE AND FUN EVENT

German homes didn't typically have more than one of the dolls, and so, during rough economic times in the early 19th century, the region's toymakers took to the roads, selling their wares elsewhere - Russia, Poland and Norway. Demand increased and by the 1870s, nutcrackers (among other wooden toys) had begun to be produced commercially in factories. Nutcrackers got what would turn out to be their biggest boost when Peter Tchaikovsky adapted an 1816 E.T.A Hoffman Christmas story called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King for the, eventually, famous and wildly successful ballet, first performed in 1892.

Send us pics of you finding the Nutcracker Kings! @lovewimbledon

IN

WIMBLEDON

Wimbledon food blogger Sisley White shares some of her top picks for eating out during the festive season. Wimbledon is bursting with great restaurants, there are so many that’ll feed your soul and warm your belly with delicious food this winter. On taking a family stroll through Wimbledon, after visiting Winter Wonderland or for dinner out before a trip to the Panto, fill up at one of the many super family-friendly restaurants that offer dishes from all over the globe.
A favourite choice for burgers in Wimbledon with a huge menu is Gourmet Burger Kitchen. With their delicious burgers ranging from the classics to the more unusual with interesting toppings, you can be guaranteed to find a burger to suit each member of the family.

Love to swirl your pasta? Independent bistro &Pasta offer a wonderful menu filled with all the pasta combinations and flavours that you can desire. Fancy a super slice of pizza instead? Then look no further than Made in Italy from the classic Margherita to the unusual Salsiccia e Friarielli with its enticing toppings of mozzarella, wild broccoli, Italian homemade fennel sausage and fresh chilli. The Broadway offers an Italian foodlover’s dream.

For a big family-sharing menu with exotic flavour head to Wahaca on The Piazza. A wonderful Mexican restaurant with a huge selection of street food, ideal for sharing.

With the mix of meat, vegetable, gluten free, spicy, sweet and sour dishes available, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Take a taste trip to the orient for a dinner filled with spice to warm you up on a chilly evening! For a delicious and authentic Thai meal look no further than Mai Thai. A cosy restaurant that serves a stunning range of authentic dishes. If you fancy a traditional Indian curry, visit Ahmed Tandoori, a wonderful independent restaurant which has been in Wimbledon for many years. They have a fantastic menu, a brilliant atmosphere and helpful staff who will help you find the right curry to suit your taste.

Christmas, Dickens A magical combination Attic Theatre is bringing Great Expectations to the new theatre spot, Merton Art Space in Wimbledon. Danielle Sweeney sat down with the Director Louise Hill to find out more…

We’re delighted that Attic Theatre is coming to Wimbledon for your Christmas production of Great Expectations. What made you choose Wimbledon? Thank you – we’re really looking forward to bringing Great Expectations to our home borough. Attic has been resident in Merton for over 20 years, and we began life in Wimbledon - Attic founded the studio theatre which is now the New Wimbledon Studio. So when we had the opportunity to collaborate with the libraries team on a brand new arts space in Wimbledon, we jumped at the chance. It feels very exciting being in the building and using it in a different way “after hours”. What made you pick Dickens’ Great Expectations for your Christmas production? Charles Dickens’ stories have long been associated with Christmas – they are tales for a long winter’s night by the fire and Dickens himself used to travel the country giving dramatic performances from the novels. Great Expectations has it all – a ghostly bride, a love story, criminals on the run, and a really engaging young boy at the heart of it all, trying to work out what his life is all about. And of course the story opens on Christmas Eve, so what better time to tell it? Dickens also has a close association with Wimbledon – he sent four of his sons to Wimbledon School, and one of the characters from his novel, Bleak House, was based on Leigh Hunt, the rather dissolute poet who used to drink in the Rose and Crown in

Wimbledon Village. So Christmas, Dickens and Wimbledon was a magical combination waiting to come together! You’re one of the first theatre companies to perform in Wimbledon Library’s new arts hub, Merton Arts Space. What are your ‘Great Expectations’ for the new space and how do you intend to use it? It’s a real thrill to be staging the first professional show in Merton Arts Space. We chose to stage a classic novel to enable us to celebrate the library building and the magical, transportive power of reading as well as the thrill of live theatre. The show is epic (8 actors play more than 50 characters!), but the library allows it to be intimate too. And we’re staging the play in the round, surrounded by the ceiling-high bookshelves. Wimbledon Library was established shortly after Dickens wrote Great Expectations, and the building, which houses the reference library, was historically used as a performance space - some of the older residents of Wimbledon even remember performing there! - so it feels right to be telling this story surrounded by a library building from the same period as the novel. What makes your Expectations unique?

and Wimbledon a show which is fast-paced and action-packed our cast will be working very hard! She also uses Dickens’ own words. That means you can come to see this show as someone who has never read the novel before and still understand the story, but committed Dickens buffs can also come and see the novel on stage with all the richness of Dickens’ own storytelling. You’re working with Wimbledon College of Art to design the costume. What’s it been like working with the students? We’re only just beginning our collaboration with the students, who will design both set and costume. It’s really exciting to be in on the start of their careers – designers from the Wimbledon College of Art have gone on to design some of the most exciting theatre in the world, so it’s a real privilege to be working with these students as they take their first steps into the professional world. “Great Expectations is a perfect Christmas show for all the family, and it’s particularly exciting to be able to bring it to Wimbledon, given Dickens’ own connections to the place. We’re really proud to be launching a new local arts venue, and we hope local audiences will join us in making this a really special event – join our bookclub, participate in our online trail and come and see one of Dickens’ bestloved stories brought to life in the heart of Wimbledon this Christmas!” To find out more and book tickets, please visit www.attictheatrecompany.com

An interview with New Wimbledon Theatre manager

Neil Chandler Wimbledon welcomes new General Manager Neil Chandler to Wimbledon. Just in time to host Wimbledon’s much loved Christmas pantomime which this year, will be Dick Whittington! Neil comes from an impressive theatre background and most recently was a custodian of The Bristol Hippodrome. Danielle Sweeney caught up with Neil Chandler to find out what he has in store for Wimbledon… Welcome to Wimbledon! What sort of shows are you planning to bring to New Wimbledon Theatre? We have an emphasis on a programme that plays to the strengths of our local community - we’ll certainly continue to bring top class musical theatre - that is what we are known for and it is what our beautiful 106 year old building is perfectly designed for! Wimbledon panto is one of the best known in London, what makes it so popular? What could be a more magical first impression of live entertainment for a child… a stunning Grade II listed theatre just like you see in the storybooks and a vibrant and fast moving show that involves the whole audience. Our pantomimes do what they say on the tin; you get your money’s worth and for the huge London community we are easy to get to so you don’t feel like you have to travel for hours during the busy festive season for a few hours of entertainment. Do you have any plans for the New Wimbledon Theatre Studios (the alternative space downstairs)? There are some exciting plans for the studio that I can’t reveal just yet. We have an 80 seat studio ideal for comedy, live music and plays within the theatre footprint – not enough people know about it but that will change next year. We see you have a pirate themed Christmas show for toddlers in the studios. Who came up with the idea of pirates at Christmas? I’ve had the pleasure of working with Imagine Theatre for a couple of years and a space came up in the studio that they were happy to fill. Previous years have seen

a very magical Santa production in the studio and this year we will build on that – albeit with something quite different. The show is full of songs and bright colours. All children are able to meet Santa after the show and they receive a present. How does the theatre engage with the local community? Through our excellent creative learning team we engage with local schools, disadvantaged children and offer opportunities for learning in a working theatre environment. 2017 sees a whole host of new educational classes at the theatre, from “Over 50s Musical Theatre Workshops” to “Verona’s Musical Balloon Band” classes for toddlers. The theatre is an iconic venue within the borough and it was built for people to enjoy. This year’s Christmas panto ‘Dick Whittington’ will run from 9 December – 15 January www.atgtickets.com/venues/new-wimbledon-theatre ‘Santa’s Polka Dot Pirate’ will run in New Wimbledon Studio from 6 - 24 December.

YES VOTE FOR LOVE WIMBLEDON It may be difficult to believe that just five years ago Love Wimbledon didn’t exist. There were a small number of businesses trying to do the right thing for the community they trade in. In February 2012 Wimbledon businesses voted to create a Business Improvement District, committing themselves to pay an annual levy to fund Love Wimbledon until 2017, securing £2.5 million of investment to benefit the town. This autumn we held our 2nd ballot to enable another 5 years of business’ investment and I am delighted to announce over 80% of business voters voted YES for Love Wimbledon to continue. We have secured a very strong mandate to continue until our next renewal ballot in 2022. What does this mean for you? Fundamentally it means a stronger, more lively and overall better town centre. Yes, we work on behalf of the business community; we are funded by them after all. But without the synergistic balance between the mixture of shops, restaurants and places to go out in Wimbledon, a loyal residential community and

the thousands of people who work (and therefore spend) in this centre, we lose that virtuous circle. When has there been a better time to visit Wimbledon? I for one will be getting my books at our new Waterstones and some stocking fillers from WHSmiths, watching at least one of the four Christmas shows we have in our world class theatres and topping it all with some delicious food from our Christmas Market on The Piazza. So let’s all enjoy our town – together we can all make it even better. On behalf of all of the Love Wimbledon team and our Board, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Helen Clark Bell Chief Executive Love Wimbledon
