Jo Brand Interview Love Wimbledon caught up with ‘quite’ local Jo Brand to find out about the Wimbledon Panto, Villains, Reindeers and Christmas. What’s your favourite Christmas Panto? I think it has to be Peter Pan... is that strictly a panto? don’t know. Got taken to see it by my grandma in 1840 and loved it. Still remember we all had to shout ‘I believe in fairies!’ to bring Tinkerbell back to life. If only modern medicine could utilise that . When you were a child did you go to Pantos, if so what did you think of them and what did you see with who? We went to the odd panto, the only one I can remember was Dick Whittington. My grandma used to take us and sing along at the top of her voice. We were all embarrassed. Why Wimbledon for your first panto? Well, because Wimbledon has a tradition of doing great pantos, it’s a beautiful theatre and it’s quite near my house.

‘Wimbledon has a tradition of doing great pantos, it’s a beautiful theatre and it’s quite near my house.’ What’s your funniest Christmas moment or story? A well known actor I know was doing panto and was at the side of the stage being roundly abused by a very scary family whose words I can’t even repeat because they were so rude. Eventually he got fed up with them and gobbed on them. That’s not funny is it really. Or Christmassy. What’s your best part of Christmas Day? Lying down a lot... don’t get much chance the rest of the year.

Who’s your favourite panto villain? Boris Johnson

Can you name all of Father Christmas’ reindeer? Donner, Blitzen, Rudolf... that’s about it I think. our wimbledon winter 2013

on d e l b Wim er t d Win derlan n Wo

The streets will be free of traffic, music will be filling the air, the acts will be entertaining and this year, Sunday 1st December, sees the first ever Wimbledon Winter Wonderland at the weekend.

You can challenge an elf to a game of Jenga or Connect 4. Familiar characters will be appearing, Eddie Katz, Haydon the Womble, Christmas fairies and hopefully, if we can get him away from his Grotto for a moment, Father Christmas. Face painting and balloon twisting and with TotArt providing Christmas creative workshops from the Love Wimbledon shed there’s lots to do.

Bake your own Cranberry, Sage and Onion Christmas Sausage Rolls We asked Nick Carter, Head Chef at The Old Frizzle pub to tantalise us for Christmas with something quick, easy and most importantly – Christmassy. Nibble with friends and family, with a glass of something fizzy. Add carols, a cinnamon candle and get into the Christmas spirit. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and add the onions. Cook gently for about 20 minutes until soft and golden brown. Add the sage leaves, cook for a couple of minutes more and then spread out on a plate to cool. Put sausage meat in a mixing bowl with the cooled sage and onion mix, add the breadcrumbs and cranberries, then with your clean hands mix together.

1 red onion, peeled and finely sliced 1 sprig of fresh sage leaves 1 handful breadcrumbs fresh nutmeg, for grating 500g free range sausage meat 50g sun dried cranberries 250 g ready-made puff pastry (or you can make your own) 1 free-range egg a little milk Preheat the oven to 170ºC/350ºF/ gas mark 4.

On a floured work surface, roll the pastry out into a big rectangle as thick as a pound coin and cut it lengthways into two long, even rectangles. Roll the mixture into sausage shapes with your hands and lay along the centre of each rectangle. Mix the egg and milk and brush the pastry with the mixture, then fold one side of the pastry over, wrapping the filling inside. Press down with your fingers to seal the join. Cut the long rolls into the sizes you want and space them out on a baking tray. Brush with the rest of the egg wash. Rest in a fridge for approx 25mins then bake in the preheated oven for 25 mins or until puffed, golden and cooked through. our wimbledon winter 2013 11

Creating the magic of Christmas Danielle Cleobury caught up with the Elys team. So what makes Christmas Christmassy? Is it the smells, the sounds, or the sights of Christmas? I managed to spend a short time with Heidi Chipchase, Elys Department Store’s Visual Merchandising Manager, to find out how Elys create the magic of Christmas in the store. ‘Sparkle and glitter is the basis for this year’s window display’ she enthused. With ten windows to decorate and reveal overnight at the beginning of November; Heidi starts the process in June. This year, Elys are showcasing a contemporary white background draped in thousands of twinkling fairy lights coupled with white shimmering fringing - a stunning backdrop to complement colourful clothes and products.

‘Watch out for the window change when the party outfits come out overnight’ Watch out for the window change in late November when like magic, the party outfits will come out overnight (and think of the Elys team who will have been scrambling with the mannequins all night to create a glamorous party atmosphere!) On top of the window displays, Elys has grown their Christmas decoration and gift ranges. Watch out for their new ‘candy grotto’, with Father Christmas’ shed made from liquorice allsorts and candy canes. Personally, my Christmas shopping can be chaotic and last minute – but looking at what this store is doing to entice me, it brings a serene element to the season; something I crave. our wimbledon winter 2013 29

Love Wimbledon - Putting the heart into SW19

Sprinkling a little magic over Christmas This year Wimbledon Winter Wonderland has moved to the weekend to make it easier and more fun for families AND we are pedestrianising the road creating more space, for more fun - so come and join in on Sunday 1st December.

We have rides, stalls, fireworks, workshops and performances by a variety of community organisations and other performers including dance crew Flawless who are starring in this years’ panto at New Wimbledon Theatre. We will have two stages on The Piazza and in Centre Court - see our events pages for more details. This could only happen by working with businesses and other organisations to make Wimbledon a great place to shop, eat and live. To make this year extra special, The Broadway will be closed between Queens Road and TK Maxx and traffic diversions will be in place. All car parks, trains, trams and tubes will be unaffected. The festive spirit is alive in Wimbledon with more trees lit up to create the magic and sparkle of the season. If you would like to give us feedback (preferably positive!) or have any ideas or suggestions you can contact us at info@lovewimbledon.org. Whatever Christmas and the festive season holds for you we would like to wish you a very enjoyable time and we look forward to welcoming you into Wimbledon. lovewimbledon.org
