The countdown has begun to the Rugby World Cup 2015. Missed out on tickets? Enjoy the buzz, beer and boisterousness of the game on a big screen in comfy seats, at one of Wimbledon’s great sporting pubs. Father and son, Lee and George, are local residents and “mighty big rugby fans” George tells me. They can’t agree on which team is the best - George is supporting Ireland and Lee is “backing England all the way!”. Nor can they agree on their favourite place to watch, but what they both agree on wholeheartedly is that Wimbledon is a great place to enjoy watching the game. They talked us through their favourite spots…
O’Neills In George’s opinion, this pub is ‘simply the best!’ A family friendly atmosphere, and an affordable menu with lots to choose from. Certainly one for Irish fans. “Jonny Sexton is my favourite player as he scores the most tries” George told me over a refreshing orange juice. Get behind the Irish in O’Neill’s and make sure to check out their massive screen at the back of the pub! oneills.co.uk/Wimbledon
The Alexandra This is Lee’s preferred choice. A large pub with many screens and a great selection of food and drink. But what tops it for Lee is their huge projector screen, “the screen and sound are both top notch, it creates a great atmosphere in which to cheer on England. And if the game isn’t going to plan, there’s always the roof terrace to get away from it all!” alexandrawimbledon.com

Prince Of Wales
One for South African fans, sip on a Savanna or a Windhoek lager and take your pick from two floors to watch the rugby from. Enjoy very reasonably priced drinks and lots of seated areas.
A traditional English Pub, The Prince of Wales is one of the oldest pubs in Wimbledon, built in 1870 and rich in history. Just a matter of steps from Wimbledon Station, serving fine ales and great English comfort food – try their ‘slow cooked lamb & sweet potato pie’, it’s delicious! Enjoy the rugby on their mega screen or choose one of three TV screens around the pub.

Summer Cuts for the Kids
The moment that many parents dread is ‘haircut time’ as their child’s hair seems to have grown into a medusa style mop in a matter of days. When it’s mentioned that it’s time to ‘go to the Hairdressers’, it is greeted with ‘no’, ‘no way’ or, if you’re really lucky, ‘absolutely not’. There are many hairdressers and barbers that offer to keep the kids happy and motivated whilst they’re snipping. I decided to investigate to see what the kids could get… Sally Warren Love Wimbledon Rush Extremely tasty biscuits The first ever Rush in the country and recently refurbished, a child’s haircut from £15 with free drink and the tastiest biscuits in town. Jacks of London Lollipop giveaway From £9.50 you can drop in and the kids get to sit in a traditionally styled (but cool) barbers shop, that provides lollipops and a drink. Friendly and fun, Sports magazine commented ‘Jacks has everything you’d expect from a quality barbers and it’s right next to the station’.

“Home is where the art is” An interview with Merton Arts Trail In September, artists around the borough open their homes to the public enabling us to visit and take a peek at what our local art world is up to. Sally Warren spoke with the duo who set up the popular Merton Arts Trail (MAT), Wimbledon residents Wendy Bliss and Chrissie Craig. Last year, they were awarded the Merton Civic Award for Arts & Entertainment and after 4 years dedicated to the trail, they will be handing over the helm to Linda O’Hara, local resident and art lover.
How did MAT get set up? “Inspired by the Wandsworth Open House – we thought Merton should have something similar. It can be a surprisingly lonely existence being an artist and it helps artists meet each other, and feel part of a community which is really special.” Tell us a bit about your art backgrounds? WB: “My mother was a ceramicist and I studied at St Martins and got a BA at Wimbledon School of Art. I set up ‘Art Attack Exhibitions’ during tennis fortnight. My career has been really fulfilling working as a curator of exhibitions at St George’s Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability. I still paint (a lot!)” CC: “I married an award-winning artist who converted me to the world of art. I work in editing as well as printmaking. I trained at Putney School of Art and have opened my house for the past four years on the Arts Trail.” What are your favourite things about the trail? WB: “I love that art and home are so personal and intertwined - which is why Open House Art events are so popular around the country. It gives artists who may not have or want gallery representation a platform to show their work, and for the public to talk to the artists and buy completely commission free.” CC: “For me, it was my first opportunity to show my work to the public, and it was a brilliant feeling to discover that people could engage with my work, and sometimes even want to buy it!” Last year Wendy, you displayed your own art in Lidl’s head office reception in Wimbledon – how do you think businesses and the arts could collaborate more?
our wimbledon • summer 2015 • culture
L to R: Chrissie Craig, Wendy Bliss and Linda O’Hara. Photo by Karine Torr
WB: “I was delighted. Placing art in a business context makes brilliant sense. Free arts events unquestionably help generate valuable business, simply by the increase in footfall they bring - people always need to eat, drink, have their hair cut and so on and people also like to mix with others, so they clearly help to promote social cohesion. MAT has been delighted to create links between artists, Love Wimbledon and businesses all around the London Borough of Merton.”
The Arts Trail is asking everyone to Get Creative by lining up lots of surprises to be revealed on The Piazza. Plans will be revealed at
www.mertonartstrail.org Merton Arts Trail takes place on the last two weekends of September - 19/20 and 26/27
This year you have collaborated with Love Wimbledon on making the artshed into a piece of artwork – tell us more about that? “Fun idea LW, and thanks for giving us use of it to promote the Arts Trail! We won’t say any more, it’s best kept a surprise!” We asked Linda ‘if you could have an arty wish what would it be?’ “For Wimbledon to be as famous for it’s artists and arts scene as it is for tennis.”
So watch out, Wimbledon is getting arty-er!
New to the trail this year are artists Taylor Torr ‘Aries’ (above) and Suzanne Cole ‘Getting through 6’ (left and top of page 24)

HISTORIC WIMBLEDON Nestled above the Tesco Metro store within the art deco town hall façade lies a coat of arms from the days when Wimbledon was a borough before it became Merton. According to records, the coat of arms was granted in 1906 a year after it became a municipal borough. The arms incorporated heraldic elements associated with the history of the borough through the centuries.
The central, black, double-headed eagle represents the story that Julius Caesar once made camp on the common. The sheaf of corn is borrowed from the arms of the Cecil family who lived in Wimbledon Village (Edward Cecil became the 1st Viscount Wimbledon). There are two Cornish choughs (a species of crow - now quite rare) above the crown which can also be found on the Arms of Thomas Cromwell.
But for Latin lovers the motto “SINE LABE DECUS” means
“HONOUR WITHOUT STAIN”a good motto for Wimbledon to still adhere to!

Love Wimbledon The people that bring you the big screen… and much more For the third year, Love Wimbledon will be celebrating the Tennis Championships with our Big Screen on The Piazza and this one looks set to provoke even more tennis fever. Before you can even recover, we have a summer filled with activity and opportunities to have fun in the town centre before our Autumn Arts festival begins on September 12th. Working on behalf of the businesses, there are other things bubbling away you may not know about. Recently we have reduced the amount of ‘chuggers’ on our streets by working with the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) so stricter
controls on when and how they are in our town have been applied. We are one of only 18 BIDs in the country (out of over 200) that have been approved as an Accredited Business Improvement District. This is an industry standard quality mark confirming that the BID is well managed, has strong governance arrangements in place and that it complies with the legislation and regulations which govern it. Love Wimbledon gives our town centre a voice, developing initiatives with partners around safer, cleaner streets, better parking and fun events coupled with strategic work to ensure Wimbledon develops
its identity with the coming of Crossrail 2 and shorter term initiatives with Merton Council. We continue to make Wimbledon a more attractive town for businesses, retailers, residents and visitors so that shopping, leisure and going out are some of the best in South West London. Most importantly, we do it so that Wimbledon is an enjoyable town centre for all. Have a great summer. Helen Clark Bell Love Wimbledon BID Manager
