Summer in Wimbledon... brings a thrill of excitement. Businesses of Wimbledon have been busy getting in the ‘Wimbledon’ swing of things, putting up giant tennis balls and bunting and vivid hanging baskets adorn the town centre.

As excited tennis goers queue for open top buses or stroll along the Wimbledon Way from the station to The Championships shaded by trees, Wimbledon hosts what it is best known for, the tennis.

Summer cocktail menus appear, cool beers are sipped, ice creams are licked and friends and families chat outside cafés soaking up the atmosphere. The Piazza buzzes with people sitting in deckchairs enjoying the Big Screen, a market or music on our Chill out Fridays.

A vibrant town centre but also a green town centre, Love Wimbledon worked with Merton to ensure new trees were planted this spring and the Wimbledon BID area boasts over 100 trees.

healthy eating in Wimbledon

Making healthy eating easy Lucy and Maria Jessiman are the mother and daughter team behind the new healthy eating café Lu-Ma, at The Justin James Hotel on Worple Road. With a vision to create a place where “eating healthily is easy and delicious”, the Jessimans chatted to Danielle Cleobury and shared a favourite recipe…

in Wimbledon

Greeted with a smile and settled at an outside table, ‘Green Goodness’ juice in hand, Lucy and Maria began sharing their philosophy and menu, a range of tasty and nutritious food completely free of sugar and dairy with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options too. Both are passionate advocates of a whole food regime after finding its benefits have significantly improved their own long standing health issues. Having found it difficult to find places offering good quality, nutritious food, the idea of creating their own healthy living café was born. “We’re not about restricting your lifestyle or eating tasteless, boring food - it’s understanding how we are affected by food and choosing better, healthier ingredients.” And after tasting their ‘coconut thai curry’ and ‘chocolate brownie surprise’, I am a convert to this delicious addition to Wimbledon.

Meet James Bond the Golden Man of Wimbledon

As a flash of gold and fluorescent colour whizzes past you, you can count yourself a lucky spotter of James Bond, the most colourful cyclist in Wimbledon. We caught up with the man behind the wheels (and feathers) to find out what inspires his cycling shows…

“For me, there’s not enough colour in the world” began James, “there used to be a time when imagination and art were put into everything”. Having always enjoyed cycling as a form of exercise, he explained that both the bikes and costume creations are borne out of a rebellion in him to bring some colour back into the modern world.

12 our wimbledon summer 2014

An all-round creative, James is an artist, actor and inventor and made every decoration on his costume and bikes. Having cycled in Thailand for nine years, he was inspired to use Thai and Indian flowers and huge ostrich feathers for the most elaborate and fluorescent look. Weather permitting, he cycles through Wimbledon three or four times a week; cycling past people sat outside cafés and pubs, he receives cheers as he passes. A favourite area of his is “outside Centre Court, the bigger the crowds at the bus stop, the bigger and better my audience!” So the next time you’re in Wimbledon keep your eyes open for James Bond… The Man with the Golden Bike!

Uncovering the

Hidden Arts of Wimbledon

22 our wimbledon summer 2014

our wimbledon

Wimbledon has a rich, historic tapestry in theatre and entertainment - the first children’s theatre in the UK, the 100 year old listed baroque New Wimbledon Theatre and contemporary offerings such as the Odeon Imax or the cosy HMVCurzon art house… we could go on. But what about the lesser known arts on our doorstep, the Hidden Arts? Secret performers Tucked away beneath the New Wimbledon Theatre are the Wimbledon Studios. They host a theatre summer school and manage two youth theatres (age 11-18), engaging young people from diverse backgrounds. The Creative Learning team at NWT have joined forces with the young people of Merton to create two new productions, ‘East and West’ on 15 July and ‘Merton’s War’ on 8 August.

Local groups of young people will be performing in East and West at the NWT Laugh Out Loud Beneath the Prince of Wales, Bertie’s Bar hosts ‘The Wimbledon Comedy Club’ on the first Sunday of every month – hilarious fun and frivolity. Or try the weekly Saturday ‘Crack Comedy’ at The Watershed, the cream of the London circuit brought to Wimbledon. (Dinner package available)

Film Lovers

Music Mad

Look out for Culture Blast’s Stanley Kubrick season at the Odeon, supported by Arts Development Merton.

Both Bertie’s Bar and The Old Frizzle put on weekly live music – check out their websites for details (who knows you may come across the next Mumford and Sons). For budding young musicians, try Wimbledon Library with Jemma’s Jingles or Monkey Music playing in the kids’ corner.

For film lovers, every couple of weeks the award winning Wimbledon Film Club takes over the HMVCurzon, with pre-film nibbles, speakers including actors and directors, they screen ‘films you didn’t even know about’. They also run annual awards for up and coming film gurus.

Community Art Along with many other classes, The Wimbledon Guild hosts Art Club every Monday and Tuesday. Brain Action Get that brain working again. The Alexander puts on weekly quiz nights or try The Sunday Frizzle Quizzle at The Old Frizzle. Dancing Queens Dance yourself dizzy at the YMCA where you can do ballroom dancing classes, Zumba or dance exercise and Po Na Na have teamed up with Swing Patrol, hosting swing dance classes every Monday night on their striking, light-up dance floor.

On top of all this, Merton Arts trail and Wimbledon BookFest are coming to Wimbledon Town Centre in September – find out more at lovewimbledon.org our wimbledon summer 2014 25

a!

It’s books, plus comedy, music, film… Running for 8 years, Wimbledon BookFest is a 10 day long festival with authors, writers, comedians and performers. It launches in the town centre on 27 September. We caught up with Fiona Razvi, Director - born and bred in Wimbledon. What’s BookFest all about? BookFest was set up 8 years ago by a group of us wanting to extend the cultural events taking place in Wimbledon. I was working on Time & Leisure Magazine as an editor and meeting so many creative writers and performers living in Wimbledon. We decided it would be great to celebrate this with an arts festival and BookFest was born. Think of it as our very own ‘live chat show’ here in Wimbledon. Who tends to go? All ages from babies up. We really want to be a festival that offers something for all tastes so we programme a range of events from sport and politics through to film, music and dance. What has been the most popular show and why? It was Michael Palin’s event last year. In many ways Palin’s a man who sums up the Wimbledon BookFest spirit. He’s so multi-dimensional - this great Monty Python comic actor who has reinvented himself as one of the country’s most celebrated travel journalists. People were just fascinated to meet him. What activities are happening in Wimbledon town centre? The town centre will be hosting our launch on the weekend of 27 September and there’ll be storytelling, a film screening of young film-makers’ work at HMVCurzon and characters, such as The Gruffalo, in

the town centre Piazza outside the Odeon. We’ll also be selling tickets from Wimbledon Library throughout the summer. BookFest does a lot of work with local schools, such as the Priory and Pelham, do you think children still have a love of books? We had 38 schools from Wimbledon and Merton take part in BookFest last year. Education is a large part of BookFest’s activity, inspiring young people to read and take part in our Young Writers’ Competition. How important do you think the arts are for residents of Wimbledon and Merton? The arts bring communities to life. Our experience tells us people want to live in places where there are cultural things going on that they can connect with. Do you Love Wimbledon? Yes, in a word. I grew up here and am now raising my own family in the area. A vibrant town centre with two theatres, fantastic transport into central London and then the peace and tranquility of Wimbledon Common. Wimbledon’s got so much going for it. What’s not to love? Wimbledon BookFest 3-12 October 2014 Visit www.wimbledonbookfest.org for more information and to buy tickets

Love Wimbledon putting the heart into Wimbledon With more events for 2014 and a burst of new shops and restaurants, including JoJo Maman Bébé, Partica Party Shop, Sama Asian Kitchen and Wahaca, all alongside our established businesses, summer will be fun in Wimbledon. Centre Court’s Monsoon and Accessorise has been refitted and extended. Our mouths are already watering at the thought of trying out delicious Italian ice cream during the tennis from the new Dolce Peccato Gelato opposite the Piazza (cool!). Now in our 3rd year, Love Wimbledon is constantly moving forward to improve and promote Wimbledon. We now have a full time ranger (Tom) patrolling our town centre daily to reduce litter, remove fly posters, chase Merton Council and utilities, and work with our businesses to keep our centre active and attractive.

We are funded by the businesses of Wimbledon and work on their behalf to ensure the town centre grows as a brand, and is a vibrant and enjoyable place to work, live and visit. Everyone Loves Wimbledon – we’re here to keep it that way!
