Come and enjoy the atmosphere People love a market! Up and down the country you’ll find buzzing permanent, weekly, monthly and annual markets. On The Piazza we offer monthly markets, falling on the first weekend of every month, March – November for locals and visitors to enjoy.
For all the convenience that online shopping brings, people still enjoy touching, feeling and choosing products, smelling the aromas of food or scented goods, as well as mingling and talking to the lovely sellers who bring their wares every month to The Piazza, come rain or shine. The majority of items on sale are handmade artisan wares, and the stall holders are also the makers, so the shoppers really get a personal engagement and service as they browse and buy throughout the market. Often bespoke and personalised orders are a result of chatting together about the creative processes and what’s possible.
9
It’s not just the local community who love the markets, but the stall holders themselves also become their own customers! Christmas trader, Saharan Treasures, commissioned one of our regulars, Pup Up Design & Jewellery, to make her wedding rings for her big day later this year. Even our regular busker, Emily Lee, had her precious family heirloom repaired by Julia Pharo. They say variety is the spice of life and this is also true of the market which is why our stall holders have returning customers throughout the calendar year. Each market hosts new sellers, bringing an assortment of wares which keeps our visitors coming back time and again.
With the summer season now upon us, the market is also a fantastic opportunity to chillax in our deckchairs, listen to the music, watch our live performances and soak up the atmosphere. Sample the cuisine, grab a bite to eat from our selection of sweet and savoury street food, browse the stalls for special buys or just come and enjoy the atmosphere! Pho, a taste of Vietnam Dreamt up by passionate couple Stephen and Juliette Wall during their travels through Vietnam, Pho started out as a romantic notion that many of us can relate to. Inspired by new found exotic taste and smell sensations, they decided (while slurping pho bo in Ho Chi Minh City) to bring a tangible piece of their holiday home with them. Quite some travel curio. Located on Wimbledon Hill Road, with authentic Vietnamese décor and art depicting typical Vietnamese street scenes, you could be forgiven for thinking you were slap-bang in bustling Ho Chi Minh City. Jasmine Koolhoven, deputy manager explained that PHO is pronounced ‘fur’. So, fur next time you pop in do speak the lingo! We enjoyed a delicious selection of dishes from the menu so we could share with you, just to whet the appetite! Starters Goi cuon summer rolls – with fresh rice paper handmade by chefs daily. We loved these, refreshing and light with crunchy mint salad. Banana blossom salad – an exotic dish with star fruit, sliced steak and banana blossom. The dish packs a flavour punch with heat from the chillies and bursts of acidity from the star fruit. Main Pho – Vietnamese noodle soup. Bun nam rom hue: hot and spicy enoki, shiitake and button mushrooms, pak choi. Rich red, hot a spicy bowl of goodness. Accompanied by a plate of herbs and spices – Top Tip, crunch before adding to intensify the flavour.

LOCAL BUSINESSES UNITE
Fayre & Square is a volunteering retail initiative that offers training placements to young adults with learning disabilities or other barriers to employment. Their 8-week employability programme provides a stepping stone to further volunteering or paid opportunities. Centre Court donates the unit, Elys supports the window displays, Retail IT provides on-going till training and equipment, and Marks & Spencer employs a learner each year as seasonal staff. It’s a great example of local businesses working together to benefit the community. Manager Kirstin O’Shea is thrilled, especially as opportunities in a familiar local environment are important. She says, “Too often the focus is on what learners can’t do instead of what they can. I think Fayre & Square is a great opportunity to challenge that and open doors to further opportunities.” Fayre & Square Upper Level, Centre Court SW19 8YE Open: 10am – 4pm, Tuesday – Saturday mvsc.co.uk/fayreandsquare Read the full feature on lovewimbledon.org

There is something refreshing about Wimbledon – easy access to good shops, a choice of over 80 places to eat and the evolution of our culture around town. Many venues are thinking differently, New Wimbledon Theatre engaging in comedy and investing in alternative theatre in its studios, The Polka revamping to provide a stronger connection to the community and Tunnel 267 is responding to a new generation who want different things. It’s starting to get more exciting here and that’s down to Wimbledon’s cultural journey – we’re thrilled our new website now showcases this and all Wimbledon has on offer.

THE SECOND CHAPTER Catching up with Helen Clark Bell Love Wimbledon is proud to have started our second five year term in April after an outstanding 80% yes vote from the business community in our renewal ballot in October. This mandate allows us to continue to drive forward our vision of ensuring that Wimbledon Town Centre is a popular, attractive, safe, interesting and better place for businesses, visitors and residents. Business rate changes hit the news earlier this Spring as the rate revaluation came into force. Fortunately in Wimbledon we were not subjected to the dramatic increases that other parts of London have had to come to terms with, but it is a pertinent reminder of the costs of running a business with a shopfront; which in turn becomes a personal plea‌ to use your local town.

Our businesses survive through your patronage, so it’s always good to think local before laptop. If however you, like many have fully embraced the digital age do check out our new all singing, all dancing website to find out everything you need to know about Wimbledon, designed and built by 3mil a local Wimbledon based creative business. There are always new businesses opening and exiting, refurbishing and expanding in Wimbledon. We are delighted to have recently welcomed Neptune and Smiggle to our town centre. Watch this space for more newcomers very soon. This summer, the town will be buzzing with activity - sporting, cultural and regular markets, offering you real life as opposed to virtual experiences! u know Did yo ere are h t t a th ple 00 peo ,0 5 over 1 in d e y lo emp wn don To Wimble ?
