Singing candy canes, brass bands, roller-skating Christmas puddings (yes you read that right) snowmen, twinkling fairies that light up as dusk falls, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine – we’re filling the day with everything that makes Christmas special.
We’re filling the day with everything that makes Christmas special.
This year we’re creating more room for easier access and more festive fun characters by not having a main stage outside! The Centre Court Shopping Centre stage, however, will still be swinging so you can dance away to Christmas crackers. Favourites from previous years will return to The Broadway such as the magical carousel and snow dome photobooth. Practice on a snowboard simulator or get thrown from a bucking reindeer, the fun of Christmas will be upon The Broadway ending with a spectacular firework display from Centre Court Shopping Centre. Enjoy street food from around the world sold all day along The Broadway. The Crescent (off The Piazza) will be dressed with festive stalls from local and regional traders selling homewares, exclusive gifts, Christmas bakes and special stocking fillers. Wimbledon Winter Wonderland takes place on The Broadway which will be pedestrianised all day. Find out more details and timings at lovewimbledon.org

is back
Enjoy a taste of Wimbledon this winter “Wimbledon has a long and illustrious brewing history” Richard Coltart, from Wimbledon Brewery shares with me, whilst chatting over a sumptuous beer in the Hand and Racquet pub. The original Wimbledon Brewery started in 1832 ‘up the hill’ on Wimbledon High Street. William Quartermaine took it over in 1880 and added a fivestorey tower - the highest building in Wimbledon at the time - making 11 popular ales. Sadly, a fire started at the brewery in 1889 bringing its strong reign to an end.
The new Wimbledon Brewery is reigniting beermaking in Wimbledon, paying tribute to the town’s rich brewing history. ‘Tower SPA’ and ‘Quartermaine IPA’ are a direct homage to the original brewery.
Mark Gordon, the brewery’s founder, is a longstanding Wimbledon resident, having lived here for over 13 years. “Wimbledon has so much rich heritage and a worldwide recognition and we are very proud to be bringing part of that history back to life in SW19.’’
in t own!
Led by Master Brewer, Derek Prentice, the brewing team have worked tirelessly to produce an excellent core range of beers, with more to follow in the coming months. Richard commented “There are many great pubs in Wimbledon that provide the perfect roaring fires and comfy corners to enjoy a tipple this winter. Publicans and customers alike have been really complimentary about our beer and we’re delighted to be on the bar in plenty of pubs in SW19.” “So what makes your beer different?” I asked. “We use only the finest of ingredients, including Maris Otter malted barley. And in Derek’s legendary hands, with 47 years of experience under his belt, I do believe our beer speaks for itself.” Well, I enjoyed my tipple and who knows, I may be switching from grapes to barley in the future. A Taste of Italy throughout town
You may ask – why a focus on Italy when it’s Christmas - it’s the time for turkey and stuffing? It’s also a great time to catch up with friends, take a leisurely shop or a relaxing spa and do lunch or supper. With three new Italian based eateries just opened – it’s Buon Appetito this winter. New arrivals &Pasta and Franco Manca, although neighbours, each give a different taste of Italy (there are NO pizzas at &Pasta). Quick, homemade food and splendid service are the dishes of the day at both venues.
Local resident Mr Columbo set up his ‘fast, fresh and fantastic’ pasta joint so Wimbledonians can access delicious, homemade pasta, either eat in or take away. Venturing along The Broadway, the new Flavous gelato and dessert parlour has arrived. Part of a London-wide renaissance of 1950s coffee shops (think Bar Italia in Soho) it’s ‘dessert dining’ at its best. Parvej the manager tells me ‘After enjoying a starter and main course, people now like to choose somewhere different to have their dessert to add more
variety to their evening.’ With a tasty range of crêpes, waffles, gelatos, milkshakes, banana splits and chocolate delights, the expression ‘kid in a candy shop’ comes to mind. Danielle Cleobury, Love Wimbledon

The sun-kissed summer might be long gone but, despite the cold, you can heat up your winter look with my five festive lippies for luxuriously, luscious lips. After all, Santa’s not the only one who looks good in red.
1 First up is the gorgeous Luxe Lip Colour from Bobbi Brown in Parisian Red. Bold and vibrant, this sumptuous formula dramatically boosts moisture levels while intensely rejuvenating lips, keeping them comfortable and conditioned – even after it’s removed. Presented in a sleek, gold tube, it’s luxury redefined and has a price tag to go with it.
Elys - £25.00
2 To get precise definition and the perfect lip shape you need a great quality lip liner. The Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lip Pencil in Red lasts for up to 12 hours. With a lightweight and creamy texture, the colour glides on effortlessly and is soft enough to fill in the entire lip without feathering or bleeding.
Debenhams - £17.50

3 For something with a little more gloss as well as staying power why not try the Superstay Bold Matte Lip Hot Balm from Maybelline in Red Passion. My personal favourite, the double ended lip colour with micro flex technology has two steps: Step 1: apply the colour end; Step 2: apply the conditioning balm end for ultra soft lips. The conditioning balm on its own is a real treat for dry lips and smells absolutely delicious.
The Body Shop - £10.00
Superdrug - £8.99
4 Max Factor’s Intensifying Lip Balm Luscious Red 20 is perfect for a subtler look that you can easily build on. The soft, smooth lip colour lets you dial up your lips from subtle and sheer to a full, vibrant finish and is easy on the purse strings too.
5 If you are looking for something with that extra festive sparkle, The Body Shop’s Lip & Cheek Stain in number 3 adds just the right amount of glitter for a touch of glamour. This dualpurpose liquid stain gives lips and cheeks a hint of naturallooking colour and can be used under gloss for added intensity.
Boots - £6.99

Help a HerO Have you been into the new Help for Heroes store in Centre Court Shopping Centre? Selling a great range of clothing, wrist wear, seasonal gifts and accessories for both men and women, all are branded with the Help for Heroes colours and logos. All the profits from their sales go to the Help for Heroes Charity which provides support to wounded, injured and sick service personnel, veterans and their families for life. Adam, the store manager at Wimbledon exclaimed how generous the people of Wimbledon have been, ‘We’ve experienced one of the most positive receptions from the local community. Shoppers are very giving here and supportive of the cause.’ Taking a look around the shop, I found myself ticking off presents from my Christmas list for family and friends, being pleasantly surprised at how lovely their Christmas range was. Take a look for yourself and why not make more than just the present receiver happy this Christmas, by helping a hero with your purchase? HotChocolate our wimbledon • winter 2015 • hot chocolate in town
Marshmallows? Extra cream? Skinny? Decisions, decisions, decisions. As the cold winter nights draw in and warming beverages fill the menus, Hot Chocolate is back in town. So prepare yourself for a winter indulgence - we brought in fellow hot chocolate experts Jamie and Matthew to taste the very best.
The luxury interiors of Elys restaurant seemed a good start (respite during some hard core shopping). The boys ordered their drinks which were “lovely and sweet”, oozing in whipped cream and came in a traditional glass mug. The ‘posh’ seats were a bonus, and being able to relax in a serene atmosphere got my approval. We then headed off to independent café Kaldi, where service was friendly and the boys’ eyes lit up seeing the chocolate sprinkled on top - they sprinkled on literally lashings of extra chocolate, making it the “chocolat-iest hot chocolate ever” (you can also choose an extra flavour subject to ‘Really nice!’ Elys Hot chocolate got the thumbs up
taste!). The boys ploughed through the froth at the top of the large mug and, once through, commented “it’s filling and huge”, reflected by their chocolate moustaches that had formed above their lips.
Next we were off to Bliss near the Polka Theatre, a new café in town (with Apple Pay – what a joy!). The food looks really appetising, but we are here about the hot chocolate I remind myself. Marshmallows are on the menu and this gratifying chocolate dream is a good one before heading to the Polka theatre with the kids. So, as you turn up the thermostats at home, before you cocoon yourselves under blankets and dream of the first leaves of spring - remember it’s time to stop drinking the elderflower and sip a comforting hot chocolate instead. Love Wimbledon The festive season is upon us – and as you throw back your duvet cover on these cold, crispy mornings, remember Wimbledon is well and truly in the spirit of winter festivities. With entertainment, eating, shopping or just having a well earned hot chocolate (see page 27) we are bursting with great stores and eateries. This year we have top Christmas Pantos in our three terrific theatres (page 6) and two magical, Christmas grottos making your time here more enjoyable. Wimbledon’s choice of cuisine continues to build and we have welcomed some wonderful new independent eateries like Dip & Flip, Flavous, Franco Manca and &Pasta (who started out in our town as a street food trader – we like to support our businesses, large or small!) Our festivities start with the Wimbledon Winter Wonderland on Sunday 29th November. The Broadway will be part pedestrianised and filled with festive fun. Our fabulous Christmas market is back illustrating the unique small and local businesses we have, and the amazing presents you can pick up – so surprise your family and friends and get ahead of those last minute present buyers. We want to continue to see Wimbledon as the place of choice to go out, eat, shop and relax and, with the family fun on offer this Christmas, be sure to shop and celebrate in your local town centre.
