REPORTING TO OUR BUSINESSES 2016-17
2016 - 2017
FROM THE CHAIR In April we saw the beginning of Love Wimbledon BIDs’ second five year term after a resounding renewal ballot result last October. The strong mandate we received in the ballot is clear recognition of our strong delivery since our inception in 2012. The Board of Directors aim to provide energetic and authoritative strategic management for Love Wimbledon, to make sure we keep delivering on behalf of our businesses. Whether it’s the extraordinary choice of events the team creates, the exceptional marketing of the town and businesses or the added value business services they offer, the Love Wimbledon team focus on helping business thrive whilst creating a better town centre for all. Paul Harvey, Chair with our CEO Helen Clark Bell
The Board 2016-2017 Made up of representatives of the Town Centre business community. The Board meet quarterly to oversee Love Wimbledon activity and approve the annual budget and delivery plan. It has been chaired by Paul Harvey Managing Partner at Morrison’s Solicitors since November 2016. We welcomed Merton Chamber of Commerce and Gem and Co, as new Directors to the Board in April 2017.
When I was asked to Chair the Love Wimbledon Board I just couldn’t resist. Paul Windsor, the previous Chair, decided to step down having successfully led Love Wimbledon from setup to completion of the first term, and we are grateful to him for his leadership during this time. I have lived in Wimbledon all my life and have had a business in Wimbledon Town Centre for 10 years and along with my fellow Board Directors strive to make the town better for the wider community. It is great to be able to play my part in the current and future improvements that Love Wimbledon can deliver. I want to say thank you for your continued support and also thank you to the Love Wimbledon staff team for all they do. Please do stay in touch with us, after all Love Wimbledon BID is here for you.

SECURING THE BEST FOR BUSINESS As a Business Improvement District (BID) we are constantly measuring the impact of our activities, and we report to the Board on key performance indicators; however the ultimate measure of success for any BID is the renewal ballot. As it was the first election I had personally been involved with, I have to admit it was nerve-wracking; however we had many positive conversations and received some very heart-warming testimonials. The resounding support we received, with 80% of the businesses voting yes, confirmed to me that we are truly delivering for the town as a whole. With renewed energy and enthusiasm we started our second five year term by delivering a terrific new mobile friendly website offering much easier navigation, clear News and What’s On pages and a full listing for all our businesses. We practice what we preach and were delighted to use a Wimbledon based businesses for this complex project.

Many of our activities will continue to develop, with a few new initiatives too, but fundamentally the Love Wimbledon staff team and I are very proud to continue to provide services and support to you, the businesses of Wimbledon, and to provide Wimbledon Town Centre with a strong voice to ensure we secure the best for the town.

CELEBRATING THE TENNIS Before Love Wimbledon existed, there was little around town celebrating the tennis. How that has changed! The town centre now attracts fans and visitors bringing the atmosphere to our doorsteps. EYE CATCHING
BASKETS AND BANNERS
With our Big Screen and working with our businesses more and more shops and offices are decorating their premises with the tennis touch.
Our friends at the All England Lawn Tennis Club have sponsored the towns hanging baskets and tennis banners for the 4th year - helping the town to feel part of the game.

PLACES & SPACES We want to make Wimbledon look that bit nicer... CHRISTMAS In 2016 our Christmas tree outside the station delighted hundreds of thousands of people. Tweeted around the world, it reflects what Wimbledon aspires to be – an attractive and green place.
FLOWER BEDS & BEES We adopted some of the flower beds around town from Merton Council (TK Maxx / Lloyds Bank) planting bee friendly flowers in the heart of the town centre.

CLEANER STREETS, SAFER WIMBLEDON
As part of our work to ensure that Wimbledon is attractive, clean and safe, we organise regular pavement cleansing around the town centre, including immediately prior to The Tennis Championships each year. This covers an area of almost two square kilometres and includes a deep clean of selected pavements, removal of unsightly discarded chewing gum, cleaning of street furniture and the all important taxi rank shelter outside Wimbledon Station. The result is a vast improvement of the look and feel of our streets

WATER LEAKS – A ‘HOTLINE’ FOR IMPROVEMENT Wimbledon had seventeen water leaks in 2016 -17 varying from persistent ongoing leaking manholes to burst water mains. These waste this valuable resource and impacts on everyone walking through the town centre. We are proud to say after lobbying Thames Water we now have a single point of contact, a ‘hotline’, so we can put them under pressure to get the leaks fixed. This has resulted in getting issues reported and resolved quickly - so no wellies needed!
2016 - 2017
SUPPORTING A SECURE ENVIRONMENT Love Wimbledon works in partnership with the Wimbledon Town Centre police team, as well as the Merton Police Licensing Officer. This partnership helps to assist in keeping the town centre a safe and secure environment to work in and visit. TOWNLINK RADIO TownLink radio connects businesses, CCTV operators, police and South West Trains allowing fast communication between each other to reduce unsavoury or criminal behaviour.

CASE STUDY
In 2016 Love Wimbledon acted on behalf of our businesses to secure a new and local townlink radio supplier. We took the opportunity to upgrade the system to digital improving the reliability, reach and sound quality of the radios. As a result even more businesses have signed up and the usage has increased, helping to deter criminal behaviour through a joined up approach.
‘The new system has a much better sound quality and reach, this works especially well for basement bars.’ Kevin Gallagher, Operations Manager Love Wimbledon

SUPPORTING PUBS, BARS AND CLUBS
SHOPWATCH Launched in 2016 to discuss common issues and share intelligence. Meeting on a monthly basis, retailers get a chance to meet with Love Wimbledon, town centre police, and Merton Council’s CCTV control room representative. It is a proven benefit to work together to solve problems, seek guidance and find ways forward to prevent and reduce crime.
PUBWATCH This established monthly forum for night time economy venues highlights key issues that occur and addresses them. It is a positive forum to share information with fellow venues, as well as with Love Wimbledon, the Police Licensing Officer, and Merton Council CCTV control room representative. We have seen regular attendance increase over the last year and the majority of venues are represented enabling a coordinated approach across this sector. LOVEWIMBLEDON.ORG 13
AIM 02 CONNECTING WIMBLEDON Connected, clearly presented and represented
THE VOICE OF WIMBLEDON We aim to champion businesses and sow the seeds for improvement. Love Wimbledon takes on the challenges of everyday issues like burst water pipes and strategic issues including Crossrail 2, enabling you to focus on growing your business. Love Wimbledon gives a voice of influence on behalf of businesses. We find out what the burning issues are (by speaking with you and walking the town) and deal with them, to make your day job that bit easier.
PART OF A WIDER COMMUNITY The team attends community and resident meetings to listen and work with our wider community. This includes the Wimbledon Community Forum and Wimbledon Village Business Association giving an open dialogue to enable Wimbledon to work together on all future plans affecting the town.Â

OPEN LETTER TO THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER AND SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT With 70 business leaders across London, Love Wimbledon signed an open letter to Philip Hammond MP and Chris Grayling MP expressing our concern over the impact from the lack of making a decision on Crossrail 2. We continue to get the Wimbledon voice heard at all levels.
2016 - 2017
FEEDING INTO A MASTERPLAN Our aim is to get Wimbledon firmly on the London map. Inner London has been the focus of investment and support and we are lobbying and networking with bodies including the GLA, TfL, Merton Council and our MP to influence positive change and strategic decisions so Wimbledon stays on the agenda and benefits in the future. That includes feeding into the council’s masterplan when it takes shape. Listening to our BID businesses about wants and needs for the future is a priority and every year we develop a survey for all our businesses making sure the collective voice is heard.
CROSSRAIL 2 – KEEPING YOU INFORMED In 2016/17 there was little movement on Crossrail 2. However, we continued to lobby for a strategy to reduce blight on Wimbledon Town Centre, preserve heritage buildings, provide a sustainable solution for current and future businesses and plan to make sure Wimbledon Town Centre stays OPEN FOR BUSINESS. We are keeping the dialogue open with Crossrail and continue to lobby for the business voice to be heard. LOVE WIMBLEDON CONTINUES TO: Keep businesses informed Lobby Crossrail 2 stakeholders Ensure business views are heard Keep Wimbledon attractive and open for business
