Head to the town centre for your summer wardrobe and enjoy over 150 shops, two department stores and six convenient car parks - make sure to check our festival fashion guide on page 17 before hitting Glasto! Going out is hot, hot, hot in Wimbledon with the opening of new rooftop bar The Loft and Suburban’s new garden cocktail bar. Read about the Food and Drink Awards on page 12 where you can vote for your favourite.
Our Big Screen returns to The Piazza to bring the drama of The Championships to the town centre. This year’s event will give you the chance to have a go at hitting the fastest serve – can you #serveitup? Find out on page 4. And our Summer Pop-Up in St Mark’s Place is back! It was so popular last year we felt it deserved its own fancy name and have christened the food and music event ‘Nosh @ The Place’. Check it out on page 6 and see you there over the tennis fortnight! The Geometry of Tennis Mathematical art reaches Wimbledon Sally Warren caught up with artist Henry Day, a recent graduate from Wimbledon College of Arts. He has designed a tennis–based installation named ‘Rebound Symmetry’ to celebrate the town centre’s relationship with Wimbledon Tennis. Since graduating last year, Henry’s commissions (both private and public) have seen his intelligent geometrical shapes and forms hang in shopping centres, hospitals and office headquarters. ‘It’s crazy – I hated maths at school, yet now I appreciate it and can see how it functions, abstracting numbers to form something. But numbers aren’t maths, they are a language, numbers only exist by attaching them to objects’ commented Henry. This specially commissioned sculpture has been created out of Slazenger tennis balls and mirrored ‘tennis courts’, developing geometric forms reducing it to a minimal pattern. Kindly sponsored by Slazenger and supported by The All England Lawn Tennis Club, the sculpture will hang over The Piazza for the entire tennis fortnight. When asked about his time at Wimbledon College of Arts, Henry blew away the notion that an art course is an easy option, ‘be prepared for selfdiscipline – you have to care about your art, be self-motivated and focused. Having confidence helps and keeping an open mind.’ What does he think about the town centre? He answered simply ‘It’s great, really easy going; I really enjoyed studying here with the mix of tranquillity but with lots of stuff going on.’ Henry Day’s ‘Rebound Symmetry’ Sculpture can be seen from 27 June to 10 July on The Piazza, outside Morrisons. henryday.net

Before Love Wimbledon came to be in 2012, I had been Wimbledon Town Centre Manager since 2004. Give pizza a chance! Recent arrival in Wimbledon, Franco Manca is conveniently situated on the corner of The Broadway, just across from The Piazza. The relaxed ambience and genial staff suggest this friendly newcomer is the perfect place to enjoy perfect pizza. Franco Manca breathes fresh life into the world of pizza. The sourdough specialists pride themselves on offering authentic, slow-rising pizzas baked in traditional wood-burning brick ovens, known as “tufae”. Their genuine passion for simple, good quality produce is evident in the care and consideration they place on sourcing key ingredients, ensuring their menu is loaded with rich, full flavours.
“This honest, no fuss approach to food is a running theme throughout the Franco Manca menu.” Franco Manca’s butchery cures meats from British farmers using traditional methods, and is proud to be associated with the current revival in rare breeds. Mozzarella is produced daily in Somerset while fresh, sweet ‘heritage’ tomatoes with just a hint of acidity come from farmers across the UK. Their message is simple: please give pizza another chance. We wholeheartedly agree! Franco Manca 20 The Broadway, SW19 1RE francomanca.co.uk

San Lorenzo fine dining - the legacy
A family run Italian eatery in Wimbledon. It was in the swinging sixties that their first restaurant opened in Knightsbridge which was known for hosting legends such as the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. When they came to Wimbledon, they caught the tennis crowd by storm. San Lorenzo Wimbledon opened in 1969, arguably now one of the area’s oldest restaurants. “Wimbledon was a natural choice for a second restaurant” owner Ghigo Berni told us as “many creatives and artists lived here in the sixties including influential characters in film directing and media such as Ridley Scott”. The success and legacy of the Knightsbridge restaurant radiated to the Wimbledon San Lorenzo and Ghigo proudly took over the family business in 1990. Chatting to Ghigo over a cappuccino in San Lorenzo Wimbledon, he explained that his parents introduced Italian specialities like olive oil, sea bass and avocado to the London eating scene which caught the attention
of actress Sophia Loren. On return visits, she invited her famous companions and suddenly the place took off, a bohemian jewel for artists and aristocrats. Ghigo commented that it was his parents’ ‘relentless energy and personable hospitality’ that earnt a loyal following. As a 4 year old boy, Ghigo’s first experience of being part of the San Lorenzo brand was wearing a wooden board hung round his neck with the day’s menu handwritten by his father... quite a contrast to the ways of marketing today. The attraction is still there for movers and shakers as well as TV personalities and tennis stars. During the Wimbledon fortnight the restaurant is buzzing – the Williams sisters and Boris Becker
Lorenzo & Mara Berni, founders with their two sons Ghigo and Paolo, circa 1968
come to taste the fine food and local hospitality. Ghigo described one of his memorable moments in the nineties when a visit from Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields had paparazzi crowding outside the restaurant whilst the couple enjoyed his family’s recipes. So what’s kept the restaurant so popular after all these years in Wimbledon? With a smile, Ghigo shared “some magic occurs when you mix our food and hospitality with interesting customers”. San Lorenzo pride themselves on staying loyal to their rustic Italian ingredients, family recipes and warm welcoming atmosphere. San Lorenzo 38 Wimbledon Hill Road SW19 7PA sanlorenzowimbledon.com

‘A lot to celebrate in Wimbledon’ Catching up with Love Wimbledon BID Manager Helen Clark Bell As the internationally prominent fortnight is upon us once again, I am reminded of a time before Love Wimbledon when the town did not make the most of this annual opportunity to shout about how wonderful our town is. In the last four years, Love Wimbledon has unleashed a previously untapped energy from businesses, not only to the tennis but to the town centre as a whole, making Wimbledon an inviting place to work, shop and play, whether as a retailer, restaurant or an office based business. At the end of 2015 just under 100% of our shops were occupied – making Wimbledon a tempting shopping, eating and going out destination. Since then we have had a number of changes but I am delighted that we have been able to secure
the return of WHSmith and Waterstones who have been severely missed since their departure and having welcomed Chicken Shop, Dirty Burgers, The White Company and Jo Malone (the latter two within Elys), Wimbledon remains a very attractive retail opportunity. Later in the summer Neptune Furniture and Metro Bank will also be opening their doors after their significant refurbishments. Strong retail is also supported by an increasing number of UK HQs that are based here providing terrific employment opportunities to local residents. Companies such as Club Med and Domestic & General pride themselves in local recruitment. So whilst the Big Screen makes it’s annual outing to The Piazza and our Pop-Up activity returns to St Mark’s Place, Wimbledon continues to go from strength to
strength with a lot to celebrate and remaining attractive to large and small businesses alike. We are so much more than just the tennis – but the very name of the town gives us a uniqueness all year that we are proud to be a part of. Helen Clark Bell Love Wimbledon BID Manager
