New Dumpling House in Nundah An exciting new dumpling restaurant has opened in Sandgate Road, Nundah. 8848 Mo:Mo House serves traditional Nepalese dumplings, using fresh ingredients and rich, fragrant herbs and spices. This is the second 8848 Mo:Mo House to open in Brisbane, with the flagship restaurant located in Fortitude Valley. Owner Hom Pyashi is excited to bring traditional Nepalese dumplings to Nundah, with 21 different types of momos currently available (and more to come).

"8848 Mo:Mo House is the complete Nepalese dumpling house. Our first restaurant in Fortitude Valley remains very popular, and we’re excited to bring our offerings to Nundah and northside residents," says Hom. Momos are a traditional serving of meat or vegetablefilled dumplings, brimming with delicate and flavourful juices, served with traditional chutney and a house-made dipping sauce.

8848 Mo:Mo House serves a variety of momos, including steam and fried varieties, with chicken, pork, seafood and vegetarian fillings. They also offer jhol momos (soupy dumplings) and open momos.

Their dessert speciality is the Chocomo – homemade chocolate momos served with their in-house chocolate topping and ice-cream. Hom looks forward to meeting more Brisbane northside residents, with the restaurant open for dinner, 7 days a week, 5pm to 10pm. They offer dine-in and takeaway, plus have function and catering options available.

Co-Parenting and COVID-19

New Year, New……?

I’m often asked how parents can share care arrangements for their children during lockdown.

You have probably been targeted by diet companies, gyms, bootcamps, cosmetic companies and other programs promoting ‘New Year, New You’ campaigns.

Thankfully, if you have usual parenting arrangements in place (either by agreement or per family law parenting orders), Queensland Health has confirmed that your children can still move between households as usual. This is in line with the Family Court’s advice that parenting orders should still be followed.

While these offers seem attractive when you're motivated after Christmas and New Year, it is important to avoid getting caught up in these short term fixes and consider what is going to sustain you once this motivation wanes.

Obviously, common sense should always prevail and if one parent is in a lockdown area, and the other parent is not, then both households should comply with the more stringent lockdown requirements (for example, staying at home, socially distancing, and if necessary, wearing masks). If travel is restricted, then it is a good idea to carry a copy of the Court orders or agreed parenting plan with you when you are taking your children to the other parent, or collecting your children. Of course, the current situation is changing all the time so if you’re not sure, or if you are having difficulties with parenting matters, please get in touch. For your long-term health, it is more beneficial to find a practice that best helps you achieve your goals and helps you to make sustainable changes to your lifestyle. To determine what's right for you, ask yourself: • W hat are my goals? • W hat am I comfortable doing? (remembering that sometimes it’s good to try things that are outside your comfort zone) • C an I see myself doing this, long-term and is it enjoyable? Try not to jump on a bandwagon or buy into ads that provoke guilt – instead, find a long-term and sustainable practice that is going to work for you. Getting Bike Fit

How To Find The Right Agent

Bicycles are an excellent way of getting around town. When buying a bike, you could get a basic fit, but it won't consider your history of injuries. Instead, a comprehensive bike fitting by a Physiotherapist will assess these factors:

Are you trying to find the right agent for your needs? As much as we'd like to say look no further (we’re a pretty safe bet) there are a few steps everyone should take before choosing an agent:

• Comfort: you should feelcomfortable, even on extended rides.

• R esearch: Start with getting insight into how different agencies work. Look for agents who have sold similar properties or in suburbs you're interested in.

• S eat: Height, tilt, distance from handlebars should all be chosen for your riding style and your injuries. This is often overlooked in a basic bike fit and is important, especially if you have knee or hip pain.

• T hink Local: Someone who knows your local market landscape and can help you be aware of competition and buyer preferences is invaluable.

• Pedals: Clipping in can make your ride even easier. Your feet will push a ndpull.

• M ystery Shop: Consider stopping by an open home your prospective agent is running to get a feel for how they work, communicate and follow up.

• H andlebars: Adjustments can be made or extra parts can be added. No tingling in the fingers! • Fitness: You’ll get the most out of your bike when you are fit enough (even for those hills). Additional strength and conditioning guided by a health professional can assist and prevent injuries.

• A sk Questions: Ask the agent what approach they feel will work best for your property and why. It’s important that you are comfortable with the strategy they suggest. • T rust Your Gut: Being comfortable with your agent is important, since your relationship will depend on honesty and communication.

If you want some guidance to improve your cycling, The Joint Physiotherapy Team can help. Happy riding!

We pride ourselves on our honesty and the relationships with our clients, so feel free to contact us so we can discuss how we can help you.

Did you know that Toombul was once home to a Tiger Farm?

p Staged photo at the Tiger Farm c 1884. State Library of Queensland. u Advertisement for the Circus in the QLD Figaro and Punch newspaper, November 17, 1888. State Library of Queensland.

Higgins' Tiger Farm was located in the Toombul area in 1884. Two Bengal Tigers, named Sammy and Jimmy, were part of a travelling zoo and were affectionately known as the Toombul Tigers. The Tiger Farm was located on a property 200 metres from the local railway station and would travel into the city to take part in the zoo performances. The travelling zoo, named ‘Charles Higgins’ Great Menagerie of Wild Performing Animals’, boasted five species of Royal Bengal Tigers, Russian Bears, Leopards, Panthers, Cheetahs,

Monkeys, Snakes and the ‘great performing Toombul Tigers’. On the 21 November 1888, one of the tigers escaped when a handyman failed to secure the cage door and Jimmy the tiger mauled a man on Turbot St, Brisbane. After the attack, the tigers were moved to the Queensport Aquarium as the star attractions. After the mauling incident in the City, locals petitioned the Mayor to close the circus down, especially after more wild animals were found outside their enclosures. Employee William Madden further inflamed locals by getting drunk and threatening to release more tigers. He was promptly arrested.

Our New Muay Thai Queensland State Champion After a thrilling win against an opponent more than 2 years his senior, 14-year-old Luke Fraser has been named the new 57kg Muay Thai State Champion for Queensland. Luke, who trains at Nundah’s Northside Boxing under coach Jojo ‘Tiger’ Ancajas, won the thrilling fight against Jye Van Polen in Mackay at the end of 2020. Luke travelled to Mackay to take on the local champion in front of his home crowd.

“I had to get special permission to fight because my opponent was more than two years older than me and the fight was held in Mackay in front of his home crowd. At the end of the fight when I was announced the winner by split decision it was the best feeling because all my hard work paid off.” Luke is a talented Muay Thai fighter, who has won two QLD state title belts, a 3rd place at nationals and has won the prestigious Santenoi trophy. He has been training with his coach Jojo since 2018.

“Since Luke has started training with me at JTA Training Systems at Northside Boxing we’ve accomplished a lot and hit some major goals,” says Jojo.

“This was going to be one of the biggest fights of my career,” says Luke.

The history of German Station Park

Looking for a gorgeous new piece for your collection? We’ve picked out some of our favourites from Clayfield Jewellery. The Pink Diamond Ring Dress Ring containing a .30ct G, Si Diamond in the centre, surrounded by .17cts of Argyle Pink Diamonds, and another .68cts of G, Si Diamonds, all set into 18ct Rose and White Gold.

The park is so named because of the German missionaries who arrived on this land in 1838 to convert the local Aboriginal population to Christianity – a herculean task as there were no books to help them learn the local native languages or customs, and the missionaries' first language was German.

A local Nundah historian, Joe Egan, was responsible for ensuring that the German missionaries would never be forgotten. German Station Park is one of his initiatives. Joe is no longer with us, but his long-standing interest and work in honouring the missionaries can be found in his research at Nundah and Districts Historical Society Inc. and in his publication “Mission to Suburb”. The park has beautiful trees, covered picnic tables, barbeques and a covered playground. Over many years, a group of volunteers have donated their time to making this park what it is today. In planting trees, they continue to make sure German Station Park is kept in beautiful condition. If it is a monument you seek – look around you.

Sapphire Studs Studs containing 1.96cts of Ceylon Sapphires and .71cts of G, Si Diamonds, all set into 18ct white Gold.

Clean Up Australia Day – Cannery Creek and Nudgee Beach

Speed Changes for Northgate Road I have a very strong focus on the future of our area, ensuring feedback from our community is heard. The Northgate Road speed limit has been on my list of priorities since 2016 following feedback from local residents.

Clean Up Australia Day is Sunday, March 7 and I encourage you to take a small amount of time out of your day to keep our community clean, green and free from unnecessary waste.

Join me at Nudgee Road, Nudgee Beach just south of Tuckeroo Park between 7:00am - 8:00am and Cannery Creek, Station Avenue, Northgate between 8:30am - 9:30am. Congratulations to the other registered host volunteers committed to keeping our suburbs clean. Many hands make the job easier, and multiply our efforts. Head to the website for registration and location meeting point details www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join-a-clean-up.

I’ve continued to advocate on behalf of residents, working to achieve a more appropriate speed limit.

Dog Registration Tags Council has released a new range of colourful dog registration tags, following a spike in dog ownership, to ensure pups can look fetching while owners keep them safe.

The new designer dog tags help reunite owners and their four-legged friends quickly if they’re ever separated. Whatever your choice of breed or name, we want to encourage all owners to register their dog with Council, so we can continue offering new initiatives to help everyone be a responsible pet owner. Brisbane has earned its reputation as a dog friendly city, with nearly 40% of Brisbane homes now owning a four-legged family member. Apply for your personalised dog registration tag at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au

Made with love in Nundah.

I am pleased to now advise that the speed limit on Northgate Road, from Toombul Road to Sandgate Road, will be reduced to 50km/h. I would like to take his opportunity to thank the active community in Northgate for their support and initiative in improving their suburb.

What’s happening in 2021* English as a Second Language Classes Northside Connect will be continuing to host English as a Second Language (ESL) classes every Monday from 10am to 12pm. There is no need to book, just come down and talk to our ESL teachers about your English language ability. A class on Thursday morning will recommence at a later date.

Northside Connect is also looking for volunteers for our conversational English as a Second Language classes. If you have experience working with people from non-English speaking backgrounds and are available either Monday or Thursday morning for 2 hours, we would love to hear from you. TESOL qualification is desired but not essential. If you are interested, send an email to admin@northsideconnect.org.au with either a resume and/or a short paragraph about yourself and why you would like to volunteer with Northside Connect.

Sewing Group Each week a group of keen sewers and those who would like to sew better get together and have a very fruitful morning, creating lots of different items to wear and for the home.

A few things they have made recently include reusable face masks, Christmas stocking, shopping bags and items of clothing. Members have also made things to donate to those in need, including quilts for women and children that are refugees, and cot covers for premmie babies in hospital. If you are interested in joining, the group they would love to see you every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm. All levels of sewing knowledge are welcome, with many hands to guide those still learning. Just bring yourself – the group has everything you need, including sewing machines, materials, buttons, zips, cotton etc.

Garden Group Are you interested in learning about worm farming or composting? Maybe have a green thumb and want to get involved in your local community garden?

Food Relief Every Tuesday and Thursday Northside Connect receives donations of mainly fruit and vegetable from Oz Harvest and Second Bite. If you are someone you know could benefit from this service, just come down to the Centre at 1pm for assistance. When possible, we also provide donated food or hampers to our community. Northside Connect is seeking volunteers for our food relief program. They require volunteers to assist with the following: 1 Collecting donated bread from Toombul on Monday early evening and delivering to NCI on Tuesday morning. 2 Assisting with sorting donated food on Tuesday. 3 Assisting with cooking meals for community lunch on Tuesday.

The Nundah Community Garden at Northside Connect are once again meeting regularly at the Centre, if you would like to get involved please call 3260 6820 or email admin@northsideconnect.org.au.

The Brisbane North Community Legal Service

Northside Connect AGM and Launch

It can be easy for individuals to feel lost in the complicated legal process. Private lawyers can be expensive, and often the government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite a need for legal assistance, many cannot access affordable legal help. The Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS) helps break the cycle of hardship and despair by providing access to justice through a free, quality, local and accessible legal service. The service is available to everyone, and especially people who are disadvantaged or marginalised.

Thank you to everyone who attended Northside Connect’s Annual General Meeting and Launch of the new brand. The night was a celebration of the work or the organisation and a chance to say thank you to those who have supported us throughout the year.

This free legal service is provided at the long-established weekly Wednesday advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers and students. The Daytime Generalist Service is staffed by a senior generalist lawyer and a female family lawyer in the Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic, specifically for women who have experienced domestic violence. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the drop-in Wednesday service has now changed to appointment only. Appointments for this service can be made by phoning 3260 6820 and the intake process is undertaken by email. Advice will generally be given by phone, however, they will endeavour to accommodate clients who do not have access to email or a phone. Face-to-face appointments will be subject to health and safety considerations, and will be available when required. The Wednesday Evening Service is staffed by a Legal Service Administrator (Jancey Grefstad) with appointments at 6pm, 6.45pm and 7.30pm. Like other community legal centres, the service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, non-legal and multi-disciplinary services. However, donations are always appreciated and a receipt will be provided for donations over $2.00, which are tax deductible. Lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to BNCLS are always welcome. The BNCLS also provides community legal education to schools, seniors and other groups. For further information contact Jancey Grefstad on 3260 6820. The BNCLS looks forward to assisting our community in Brisbane’s North during 2021.
