4 Tips for Back-to-School Shared Parenting
Starting back at school can be stressful for families going through separation. Here are four tips to assist with back-to-school arrangements:
• Discuss who will purchase and cover the cost of school supplies and technology. Will your child need a tablet or mobile phone this year? Discuss significant purchases first.
• If you can, try to share the first day drop-off. If your ex-partner cannot be there, take photos and share them with the other parent.
• Set up a shared family calendar such as Google Calendar, or use co-parenting apps such as
Our Family Wizard or 2Houses to assist with communication and to record school events, activities and healthcare appointments.
• Attend parent-teacher interviews together if possible, to stay on the same page with your ex-partner regarding your child’s education. This also sends an important message to your child that both parents are involved, and care about their schooling.
Back-to-school is a significant part of co-parenting. Please call us for a free telephone consultation if you need advice.

The Topic on Everyone’s Mind: Interest Rates on the Rise
With eight consecutive interest rate rises in 2022, it is more important than ever to review your home loan and ensure it is still competitive and just right for you and your circumstances.
In 2020 and 2021 we experienced record low interest rates and this proved to be a great opportunity for first home buyers, upgraders and investors.
Many Australians took advantage of low fixed rate loans, or refinancing to low variable loans to save.
During 2022 there was a swift change. Those on fixed rates were able to enjoy the consistent repayments they agreed to, while the home owners on variable rates had a different experience each month with their repayments increasing.
So what to do now?
Fixed rate ending soon or currently on a variable rate?
It is important to negotiate with your lender or broker for the best possible discount, and review your current loan to make sure it still suits your needs.
Our team at Loan Market (in Nundah) are ready to provide expert advice, ongoing support and friendly service to help you manage your home loan needs, so you can enjoy the important things in life.

HEALTH
with Esme Soan from Pear Exercise Physiology & Physiotherapy
Easing Pregnancy Back Pain
Back and pelvis pain during pregnancy is one of the most common discomforts we hear reported at Pear, and it is easy to see why! Growing a mini human is hard work.
As your pregnancy progresses, the load on the muscles and joints gradually increases and the hormonal changes during pregnancy increase the stretchiness of the ligaments around the pelvis, resulting in the surrounding muscles having to work hard.
Having said that, pelvic and back pain during pregnancy, while common, is not necessarily normal and you don’t have to put up with it
By addressing muscle tension through stretching and strengthening, and encouraging easier movement of the pelvis, you can have relief from the pain now and in the future. It can also help with an easier labour and delivery.
To ease pregnancy back pain try:
• Exercises to strengthen the glutes, like clamshells, squats or bridges
• Hamstring stretches, or massage to reduce tension
• Sitting on a swiss ball for desk work.
Hot Tip: These are also great for back pain at any time, including postpartum. So keep them handy in your repertoire after baby arrives.

Jewellery Care Tips
with Trevor from Clayfield Jewellery
As we come into the month of love (hello Valentine’s Day!) you may receive some gorgeous new pieces of jewellery. Here are some tips on how to take the best possible care of your new items so that you can enjoy them for years to come.
1. Find a reputable manufacturing jeweller that you trust
This is the most important step, as they can give you the best advice and service. It’s a plus if they have an onsite workshop!
2. Get your claws/settings checked every 3 to 6 months This helps ensure that, if there’s a loose stone or missing claw, they will notice it before anything gets lost.
3. Invest in a good jewellery cleaner
Purchase a good-quality dip, cloth and wipe – they will make your jewellery sparkle like new!
This is great for those times you can’t pop in store and get your pieces cleaned professionally.
4. Always value your jewellery and update it every two years Unfortunately, mishaps and accidents happen that just can’t be helped, so it’s always great to keep an updated insurance valuation of all your pieces for extra security.
5. Don’t sleep in your jewellery I know it becomes second nature to always have your jewellery on but remember to take them off before bed.
You can shorten the lifespan of your necklaces, chains and bracelets by half just by sleeping in them.

The Year Starts When You Say it Starts
Most new year’s resolutions fail. Yep. We’ve all been there.
Most of us start the year off with great intentions and high motivation – but that often wanes by February. Momentum drops and motivation decreases. It’s the month of love after all!
You now have two choices – stop and give up, or reset and refocus. If one tyre is flat in your car, there is no point slashing the other tyres.
Just because January didn’t pan out the way you intended, that doesn’t mean the rest of the year has to be the same. It is ok to let January go and start fresh in February.
In fact, you can start fresh anytime you like by clicking the reset button.
A good way to get your focus back is think of your ‘why’.
Why did you set your new year’s resolution?
• Was it to feel healthier this year?
• Was it to get stronger this year?
Share with us your ‘why’ the next time you’re at Fitstop.
We’d love to know what is motivating you in 2023.

What’s Your Project? Playing the
Bagpipes
This is Dr Charles.
A Northgate local of 66 years, he grew up two doors from where he resides today. Charles loves Northgate as it’s comfortable, he knows the history, and his neighbours are accustomed to his bagpipes.
His godfather Jim was a piper and, when Charles was 12, Jim gifted him a practice set of bagpipes from England. The deal was that if Charles could play a March, a Strathspey, a Reel and a Jig, he would be rewarded with an upgrade to a full set of pipes.
Two years later, Charles sent a tape back to England and the rest is history. Charles has never stopped playing as it makes him feel great,
especially when the pipes are in tune! In his teens, the pipes used to score him invites to the pub where he’d be shouted beers.
Charles joined the City of Brisbane Pipe Band at age 16, until a regional posting as a GP took him away. 30 years later Charles returned to Northgate and rejoined the band. The pipes have seen him invited to play and compete overseas, and he’s marched for ANZAC day.
He loves the sense of community and friendships that the band provides, not to mention the joy of donning his kilt and performing on stage.
Charles tells me that there’s no need to be the best, enjoyment is the goal.

The Fatherhood Podcast Keeping it Real
A group of Brisbane Dad’s are sharing their parenting stories, mistakes, funny moments and life hacks in a podcast aimed at creating an inclusive community for Aussie Dad’s.
During your 6 monthly visits, your dentist has a better chance of detecting any changes in your mouth early.
Early detection of problems means you often avoid pain, treatment for your teeth is usually not as complex and not as expensive.
Nundah’s Leading Cosmetic Clinic
KB Aesthetix in Nundah are the experts in cosmetic medical treatments, assisting clients with their aesthetic concerns.
Owner Kelly Beasy is well-known in the industry, with more than 10 years of injecting experience, and more than 20 years as a Registered Nurse and now a Nurse Practitioner. Kelly is also a clinical trainer, who has spent 5 years as an educator to others in the cosmetic medical treatment field.
KB Aesthetix use only safe and tested solutions, and offer a range of treatments, including anti-wrinkle injections, dermal filler and PDO threads.
Clients receive a complimentary consultation when they arrive at KB Aesthetix, where Kelly discusses the desired outcomes, the client’s budget and their lifestyle.
The Sh*t Dad Podcast is the brainchild of friends Cam, Nick and Dave, who started the podcast as a creative outlet and a bit of fun as they navigate fatherhood.
The trio (who between them have 7 kids and another due soon) share the ups and downs of fatherhood, and feature guest speakers, including ex-professional sports stars, other parents and health practitioners.
‘We love interviewing everyday Dad’s to hear their stories, discuss funny moments, learn Dad hacks and hear their experiences,’ says Cam.
‘We acknowledge that we aren’t sh*t Dad’s – we just have sh*t Dad moments!’
Cam, Nick and Dave also focus on normalising everyday parenting mistakes, men’s mental health and share useful advice from parenting experts.
Consider when is best to attend. When scheduling appointments most people focus on when they are available, do you consider when suits best for your budget? Is there a month with fewer expenses that could be dedicated to your dental checkup? We also see many families space out appointments throughout the year to break up the cost.
Our reception team is fantastic at helping work out a schedule for you or your family and they will also ensure you maximize any dental rebates or schemes you may be eligible for, including the Child Dental Benefit Scheme or DVA.
Prevention is key. Most dental problems are preventable. Our top 3 tips are brushing twice a day for 2 minutes, flossing, and reducing sugars.
We all enjoy a sweet treat from time to time (yes, even the dentists!) but reducing the sugars in the foods we eat daily is important for the health of our mouth.
Our lunches are the best place to start. Swap out any drinks with sugar or added sugars such as poppers, juices, iced teas and iced coffees for water. Your teeth will thank you for it.

‘It can be difficult for people to get tailored skincare advice, with conflicting messages on social media often leading to unnecessary purchases,’ says Kelly.
‘A personalised treatment plan takes into account your skin, your face shape and your goals. What works for influencers and celebrities on social media may not be the best treatment for you!’

This year, the trio would like to feature more local Dad’s who
like to talk about their own fatherhood journeys –if you (or someone you know) would like to be part of the Sh*t Dad Podcast, email shitdadpod@gmail.com.
‘We’ve enjoyed featuring pediatric dieticians, children’s authors, nutritionists and doctors who can provide practical advice to us everyday Dad’s,’ says Cam.

The Legacy of Frederick William Bradbury
Frederick William Bradbury, a carpenter by trade, arrived in Brisbane aboard the Hampshire in 1883. He married Annie Elizabeth Shaw on 24 October 1883. They lived in Nundah for 52 years.
pole for electric light and power was erected in Nundah and, in December of that year, Councillor F.W. Bradbury officially switched on the electric light and power to the Shire of Toombul.
He was chairman of the Toombul Shire Council from 1920 to 1924 and was the last councillor to hold this position.
When the greater Brisbane City Council came into being in 1925, local shire councils were replaced by the ward system, and Frederick became the first alderman to represent the ward of Nundah. Bradbury Park, Kedron and Bradbury Street, Nundah are named in his honour.

Bradbury Park’s Minituare Theme Park to Open Soon
The legacy of Frederick Bradbury will continue to live on, with the latest upgrades to Bradbury Park in Kedron. Already home to an off-leash dog park, scooter track, basketball court and magic forest, the new upgrades at Bradbury Park include a large playscape, new picnic shelters and seating, barbecues and a new car park. The one-of-a-kind playscape, which is being called a ‘minature theme park’ is set to open in the coming months.
The Bradbury home in Toombul Terrace was built by E. Proctor & Son, Timber Merchants and Joiners, and cost the large sum of £250 ($500 at the beginning of the twentieth century).
Proctor’s Mill was situated in Union Street, Nundah where the Lutheran Aged Person’s Complex now stands.
Frederick was to have a long and very distinguished career as a member of the Toombul Shire Council and the Nundah Shire Council. In March 1923, the first
Frederick and his wife Annie had four children. Their three sons were to die tragically. George Frederick, their 8-month old son, died in 1890, Arnold, aged 7 years, was drowned in Kedron Brook in 1911, and George Douglas, who was a chief inspector of hospitals, was lost when the launch Nerita disappeared in Moreton Bay during a long weekend in 1939. He was 43 years of age.
The Path to Better Health
More Pathways is an allied health clinic in Wavell Heights that is determined to give its clients the right form of care.
Founder Dr Natalie Moore is an experienced osteopath, with over 17 years experience, and has undertaken a masters degree, graduate studies and further training in health, wellness and breathing.
Dr Natalie and her colleague, Dr Sandra Nixon, have an holistic approach to wellness, which is more gentle and takes into account the link between muscles, bones, nerves and other tissues that support the human body.
The doctors often see patients who haven’t had success trying traditional methods of health care.
‘Many of my clients haven’t found the answers they were looking for elsewhere,’ says Natalie.
‘They didn’t feel like they were getting to the root of the problem with other approaches, and getting the answers they need.’
Clients include babies and children, people with chronic and complex issues, hypersensitive people, and those with sleeping difficulties.
Using evidence-based information and research, Natalie and Sandra assist clients to find the root cause of their issue.
‘We take a whole-body approach with clients who may have complex conditions, including headaches, anxiety, neck and back pain, stress and jaw pain,’ says Natalie.
‘We also work with women who are pregnant, preparing for birth, or are post-natal. Women’s bodies change greatly during this time, and we can assist women with their health concerns, and assist babies with feeding issues (including tongue-tie) and sleep concerns.’
If you would like gentle, safe and effective treatment for your health care concerns, More Pathways is open 6 days a week, with no referral required. Simply book online to start your journey to better health.

Thank you to our Northside Connect Community
Northside Connect would like to thank our local community who were incredibly generous over the holiday period with donations for our Christmas appeal.
These items of food, clothing and childrens toys were passed onto families in need over the Christmas period, and they ensured our food relief pantry was well stocked when we reopened our centre in January.
Thank you to Bridgeman Baptist Community Church, Services Australia Nundah, Casa Penola and the many individuals and families that dropped items off to the Centre or into the donation bin at Woolworths Nundah Village.
We welcome non-perishable, in-date donations of food items that can be dropped off at the centre during opening hours, as well as in the donation bin inside Woolworths Nundah Village.
We have two options available to clients:
Wednesday Evening Legal Service
Our long-established weekly advice service is staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers and students. The appointments are generally 45 mins and offered between 6pm and 8pm.
Day-time Legal Service
Our Generalist Lawyer offers appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays and our Family Lawyer in our Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic (specifically for women who have experienced domestic violence) offers appointments on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
All legal appointments are by appointment only. The intake process is done online and the advice will generally be given by phone. However, we endeavour to accommodate clients who do not have access to email, and face-toface appointments are available.
Like other community legal centres our service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, nonlegal and multi-disciplinary services. However, donations are always appreciated and a receipt will be provided for donations over $2.00 which are tax deductible.
We also provide community legal education, especially to schools, seniors and other groups. For further information, please contact Kamal on 3260 6820.
The Brisbane North Community Legal Service
The Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS) provides access to justice through free, quality, local and accessible information, referral and legal advice.
Lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to BNCLS are always welcome. As the essential branch of Northside Connect, we are seeking experienced volunteer lawyers in all areas of law (except commercial law) for our Wednesday Evening Legal Service.
If you are passionate about giving back to the community, helping the vulnerable, along with networking with our diverse team of experienced volunteer lawyers, please connect us at legaladmin@northsideconnect.org.au.

Volunteers needed for 2023
Food Relief
Northside Connect runs weekly food relief programs at our centre, and we are looking for volunteers who may be able to support us to support our local community. We are seeking volunteers for two programs: our Tuesday Morning Food Relief Hamper Handout, and our community lunch.
The food relief hamper role involves arriving at the centre at opening time, packing hampers of donated goods, and distributing these to members of the community from our neighbourhood centre. The role requires coming in from 9am, starting handout at 10am and then finishing this around 12pm.
Community Lunch
We are also re-energising our community lunch that happens while our food hamper handout occurs. We are looking for some volunteers who'd be keen to prepare a hot meal
for the community. We currently have a sausage sizzle that we start preparing around 9.30am, and start handing out sausages from there. We are hoping to start preparing some other food such as roast or steamed vegetables, pasta or rice dishes to provide people with a decent hot meal.
English Language Classes
We are seeking volunteers for our conversational English as Second Language classes. If you have experience working with people from Non-English speaking backgrounds, availability either Monday or Thursday morning for 2 hours and interested in helping with our classes, we would love to hear from you. TESOL qualification is desired but not essential.
If you are interested in any of these positions, or wish to volunteer, please contact our centre Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4.30pm, or call us on 3260 6820.
