Toombul – the end of an era After extensive damage due to the February 2022 floods, Mirvac has made the difficult decision to permanently close Toombul Shopping Centre. Mirvac notified retailers and the community of their decision in May, after taking into consideration the extent of the damage and the risk of future flooding.
Vince and Luisa have now relocated Toombul Barber to Ascot, where they still look after their past clients, and warmly welcome new clients. At this stage, no decision has been made on the future plan for the site, but the community response has been overwhelming, with residents wanting retail, health services, entertainment, beauty and fresh food returned to our local area.

Cooling Our Community, Nundah More than 300 trees were planted in streets from New Ivo Street to York Street in Nundah as part of the Cooling Our Community tree-planting program. Thank you to the community members who joined us on the day. It was terrific to have so many locals, including families of all ages, taking part to help keep our suburbs cool, clean and green. As these trees mature over the coming years they will provide much needed shade, cooling and habitat. These events offer a fantastic day out for residents and families who can get together with neighbours and friends to plant new trees while enjoying a BBQ, cold drink and live music. Attendees were also given a free native tree for participating. Well done to everyone involved.

Boyd Park Fitness Equipment Upgrade
The Brisbane App – School Holiday Fun
I am pleased to deliver an upgrade to another outdoor gym in Northgate Ward with the completion of the Boyd Park fitness equipment upgrade in Nundah. The improvements included new equipment, rubber under-surfacing and a shade structure.
The Schrinner Council launched the official Brisbane app earlier this year, and the response has been incredible. There are so many exciting things happening and the Brisbane app gives you a one-stop-shop to find everything on offer.
This project is part of the Schrinner Council's commitment to giving you more to see and do in our suburbs. More than 170 of our parks across our city have exercise equipment installed in them. These outdoor gyms provide an opportunity to exercise and get fit. Improvements such as these allow our community to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle in our great sub-tropical climate.
Made with love in Nundah.

Toombul Barber has remained at Toombul since opening day and was the only retailer to have a presence at the centre from 1967 through to 2022. Vince Luppino became a partner in the business in 1985, and John’s daughter Luisa Laurito began working with them in 1994.

The news about the closure of Toombul has devastated not only the business owners, retailers and workers in the centre, but the community that has relied on its services for the last 54 years. Toombul Shoppingtown opened on 10 October 1967 with the much publicised benefit of being the first air-conditioned shopping centre in Queensland. It had 60 specialty stores when it opened, including Toombul Barber, owned by John Scavarelli, who offered 80 cent haircuts on opening day.

With school holidays just around the corner, it is the perfect tool to keep the holidays fun and engaging for all ages. HEALTH & FITNESS
LEGAL MATTERS
with Davina Donovan and Rob Lloyd from Fitstop Nundah
with Aaron Ball from Shorestone Legal
Will and/or power of attorney?
Exercise and wellbeing
There’s an important legal distinction between a last will and testament, and appointing a power of attorney.
Exercise is a natural and effective management tool for many mental health and emotional challenges.
A power of attorney allows someone that you trust (your attorney), to help you manage your financial or personal affairs. Your attorney can, if you wish, help you to pay your bills, manage your savings, and otherwise help you with your banking.
It relieves tension and stress, boosts physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being through the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones.
They can also make personal decisions for you, but only if you are unable to make those personal decisions yourself. A will, which appoints an executor, is different. If you die, your attorney ceases to have any legal power, and
your executor will then take over your estate’s financial matters. Shorestone Legal strongly recommends having both a will and a power of attorney, in case something unforeseen happens. No-one is allowed to act as your attorney unless they have been formally appointed, and if something happens to your health suddenly, it can become problematic for your family and loved ones to help you manage your affairs without a power of attorney in place.
Exercise is not just about fitness and strength. Sure, exercise can improve your physical health and your physique, even trim your waistline; but, people who exercise regularly tend to do so because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at
night, have sharper memories, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits. Research indicates that modest amounts of exercise can make a real difference. No matter your age or fitness level, you can learn to use exercise as a powerful tool to deal with mental health problems, improve your energy and outlook, and get more out of life.

How to keep exercising when stuck at home As we come into cooler weather, off the back of unprecedented rain, it's challenging to get the motivation and opportunity to move and exercise. There are always opportunities to move, even if you're stuck indoors. Here are some suggestions: Cardiovascular Exercise
Resistance Training
1. Circuit training: Choose 4-6 exercises (squats, push-ups, mountain climbers, star jumps, skipping). Do each one for 45 seconds, rest 15 seconds. Repeat.
1. Bodyweight exercises: Choose 4-6 exercises (squats, lunges, planks) and make these challenging by increasing time under tension. By this I mean, SLOW DOWN – 5 seconds down and 5 seconds up.
2. Step-ups: Up/down on your bottom step – simple! Set a timer or count repetitions, use a metronome on your phone or a great song, and step to the beat.
2. Increase difficulty through variation: Try single leg/arm exercises like a single-leg sit to stand or squat.

Business Breakfast – sharing the truth
The History of Nundah Train Station
Fifty local business owners, community members and residents attended Nundah Now’s recent Business Breakfast, featuring guest speaker Nadia Tucker from Active Truth.
The railway line between Brisbane (Roma Street) and Sandgate was opened by Governor Sir Arthur Kennedy on the 10 May, 1882.
Active Truth, which is based in Nundah, is an activewear business started by Kedron locals Nadia Tucker and Stevie Angel. Nadia and Stevie started Active Truth after finding it difficult to purchase activewear online for real bodies. Since launching six years ago, Active Truth has grown considerably, and stands by its commitment to showcase a diverse range of women and to never use photoshop on their models.
Nadia Tucker
As guest speaker, Nadia shared the highs and lows that come with managing a business, including navigating supply chain issues, managing staff, dealing with customer service and the importance of focusing on the financials. Nundah Now is looking forward to hosting more events for local businesses and residents, especially with the return of the popular Nundah Festival in 2022.
The first steam train consisted of 10 carriages and left the station at 9.35am. It stopped at Bowen Park, Albion, German Station (Nundah), Nudgee, and arrived at Sandgate at 10.15am, making the journey in forty minutes. Eight trains ran on the line each day between 7.15am and midnight.
station. The Station Master, Mr A. E Oxenham, took charge of the post office at the station. A signal box built in 1890 was retained until 1982 when new signaling was controlled from Mayne Junction. In 1960, a new brick station was erected, and later additional alterations made to accommodate electrification, which was completed in 1982. It can be said the railway was the biggest single factor bringing settlers to Nundah and aiding its development.
The building at German Station (Nundah) was a weatherboard boxlike construction with a sloping iron roof, incorporating a waiting room, goods room, and office. A water tank nearby serviced the steam trains. A Telegraph Office was opened at the station shortly after the opening of the

than people who ate "as slow as molasses." Try slowing down and enjoying your food. If you typically scoff lunch down in your car... sit outside and eat your lunch next time.
WITH
Becc Pritchard
FROM INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL CULTURE Research suggests that eating slowly gives your body a better chance to register satiety cues, enjoy your food more, and reduce the likelihood of mindless overeating. A recent study found that Japanese adults that were fast eaters were 42% more likely to be overweight
If you typically grab a packaged meal and bring it back to your desk… try going to the cafe or lunch room and sitting down to eat. Don’t stress so much on whether you need to ‘diet’. Focus instead on actually taking the time to taste and enjoy each mouthful of food and you will most likely eat less by default, have more enjoyment from the meal and be healthier as a bonus!
Local musician, Jim Toomey, is helping musicians get back on their feet after a rough few years due to lockdowns and restrictions by hosting a series of gigs at The Village Social. Jim was the drummer for popular UK band, The Tourists, which also featured Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Peet Coombes and Eddie Chin. The Tourists toured in Australia in 1980, performing their hit ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’. After falling in love with Australia on the tour, Jim decided to move here, settling in Nundah. Jim has continued playing drums in Brisbane bars and venues and recently headlined a series of gigs at The Village Social, where Jim invited The Dodgy Brothers, Hemi & 2 Stroke, Tom Waruhia Trio and Mike Morrissey to join him on stage. Jim is an accomplished writer, with his autobiography, ‘We Were Tourists,’ sharing some of his wild stories from his time in the band and touring.

Jim Toomey
"The Tourists went from being broke and on the dole in London, to find amazing success and travelling the world, recording three albums, the last of which was recorded in the Caribbean at George Martin's studios," says Jim. "When the band took off in such a big way, I kept all my diaries. When the dust finally settled, I moved to Australia and started writing short stories, which ended up into one long story – so the book wrote itself really." Jim is inviting more musicians to his popular Saturday Night Gigs at the Village Social – catch him on the drums with some amazing acts in the coming weeks.

Fraser Road Coffee Northgate Fraser Road Coffee, tucked away in Northgate’s industrial area, is a hidden gem – with a focus on great food, great coffee and creating a community feel. Owners Josh and Brooke took over the coffee shop just 19 months ago, but they have already created a space where locals can connect, play video games and feel at home. ‘Our previous location was in the Valley, and it didn’t have quite the same community feel as it does in the suburbs,’ says Josh.
Their cakes, cookies, breads and croissants come from The Bakelist and Brasserie Bread, with a number of gluten-free and vegan options available.
‘Here in Northgate, we have formed so many friendships and enjoy seeing our regular customers. We know to start making their orders as soon as we see their car pull up!’
Their mouth-watering meals are wellknown to locals – with the Reuben Sandwich the most popular item on the menu. They also have Chicken Burgers, Slow-Cooked Lamb Burgers and a Meatball Sub that is quickly becoming another best-seller.
It’s easy to see why people keep coming back to Fraser Road Coffee. Josh and Brooke are passionate about serving the best coffee, cold drinks and food and love adding new items to the menu.
They also showcase a range of local businesses in their space, with clothing from The Loaf, cheese boards from Woozy Picnic Boards and candles from Day Rd.

Kat has always been in ‘hospo’. She loves making people happy with food. And even more importantly, with coffee. Kat proudly tells me that she and her team are coffee snobs. They don’t serve what they wouldn’t drink themselves. Inspired by her own Mum’s ability to whip up delicious creations from what was in the pantry, Luna Bean offers freshly prepared brunch, bakes their own sweet treats and use locally made artisan bread. The croissants are from France (you read right!) As the owner of the café, you’ll usually see Kat working her tail off behind the scenes. It’s all worth it though. She loves seeing the regulars, the social interaction and keeping up with what is going on
in their lives and meeting their dogs. She acknowledges that whilst Nundah locals are very spoilt for choice, nothing makes her prouder than a regular turn up with a new face and seeing them leave Luna Bean fed and happy. When Kat’s not in the kitchen, she’s resting (or gaming) with her bearded man, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs and some fish. Oh, and not to mention, the café’s namesake – Luna, her beloved British Bulldog. This is. series focuses on Nundah locals, interviewed and photographed by local contributor Gaylia Lee. thisismephotography_gaylialee

Podcast Launch In May we held the launch of Series 2 of the Injustice of Intimacy podcast about coercive control. The event commenced with Hon Leanne Linard, Member for Nudgee, Minister for Children & Youth Justice, and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, formally launching the podcast and sharing valuable insights regarding Queensland’s recent commitment to criminalise coercive control. We then heard from women with lived experience, who spoke about
their involvement in the project, and listened to a powerful Survivor Spoken Word Poetry. The series aims to bring understanding, awareness and insight into coercively controlling behaviours and the different ways these may be used to abuse and control within an intimate relationship. In each episode, we hear from women with lived experiences of coercive control and workers in the field of domestic violence and sexual violence. The women who have chosen to share their experiences have done so in the hope of helping other women and better equipping workers to recognise and effectively respond to coercive control patterns of abuse.

Have Your Say This month, we are focusing on how we can continue to support the community and the connections built in our neighbourhood. With this, we ask those accessing the centre to complete surveys about both our legal and neighbourhood services. The responses will help us understand what the public wants and needs from us, allowing us to tailor our service delivery to support the wellbeing of those within our community. Our Neighbourhood Centre survey helps us identify needs for additional groups or services that will nurture the social connections of our community; with safe and inclusive spaces being created for anyone wanting to access Northside Connect services. We welcome all feedback and we also welcome individuals who have special skills and would enjoy volunteering in the centre with any current or developing groups to reach out to us. We appreciate the community’s feedback and contribution to our growing Community Centre.
To make an appointment for our day time or Wednesday evening service, please contact us on 3260 6820 during office hours.
• Criminal matters including traffic matters, such as drink-driving charges, fines, theft • Wills and estates: we do not draft wills or other documents but can advise on your legal options around this and other matters such as enduring power of attorney. We also advise if you have been named in a will or think you may be entitled to a share of an estate.
