50 Issues – a milestone for Loving Nundah! In August 2012, Larni (my wife) and I sat down at Jam Cafe and she said, “Ben, this ‘Loving Nundah’ concept – we either need to do it, or stop talking about it.” Working together, we saw an opportunity for Nundah to have a positive voice for our community – to share good stories about our area. Larni’s prompting, and with the help of other local supporters was the push we needed – and Loving Nundah was born as a print publication and social media community. We've added to our team since launch with Megan coming on-board at issue 19 as a Marketing Coordinator.

We deliver 25,000 print copies of each issue and reach more than 22,000 subscribers through Facebook, Instagram and email. At 50 issues, we’ve shared 20 million pages of positive content about our local area. We also love being part of Nundah Now’s Nundah Village Street Festival and events each year. As you read this issue, you’ll see what I love about Nundah – all the brilliant local stories about people, schools, businesses and community groups. And, although we’ve been producing issues for more than 8 years, there are no shortage of stories to tell about our wonderful area. Thank you for your support. We look forward to sharing the love for many more issues. Ben

“As soon as I saw our location, I was instantly in love. The courtyard, the beautiful cast iron gates and the little hub of other small businesses that surrounded it had me hooked,” says Bec.

Houseplant Hoarders is a charming plant and gift store located in Hendra. Originally opening as an online store, owner Bec’s plans to open a retail store in early 2020 were squashed due to the COVID-19 restrictions. After restrictions started to ease, Bec was able to open her retail store at Nudgee Road, Hendra and has fallen in love with Houseplant Hoarders’ unique space. Houseplant Hoarders is built on a genuine passion for plants and the plant community. “We not only source plants from large-scale wholesalers, but we also grow many of the plants ourselves and work with numerous micro-nurseries,” says Bec.

“This means our in-store catalogue is diverse and constantly changing. You probably won't find the same plants elsewhere.” It’s this unique offering that has engaged plant lovers, with many online shoppers now visiting the store to source one-off plants for their homes. Houseplant Hoarders is open Tuesday to Sunday and is located near Brickhouse Cafe – plan your coffee and shopping date now. The Importance of a Will

Your Results Don’t Define You

When was the last time you bought a new set of tyres? Or updated your mobile phone? These are purchases we often make without thinking twice about it. But when was the last time you updated your will?

Why do you exercise? You probably have a goal you’re trying to achieve or a place you want to get to.

Many of my clients tell me they haven't invested in a will because they mistakenly think they’re too young, or it’s too expensive, or they don’t think they need one. For most people, a properly drafted will is less than a price of a new phone (which many people upgrade every couple of years whether it’s needed or not) or the average family’s weekly groceries. Not having a will is probably going to be more expensive in the long run, especially if you have complicated family arrangements or own your own business. If you don’t have a will, or are looking for some guidance on updating a current will, the Shorestone Legal team can assist. 1 16/03/2021

What happens if you don’t get there? Do you give up? Try something new? You could continue to strive or you could try this alternative: have a look at the journey. What did you learn along the way? What gold nuggets of truth did you come by that may change your future actions? Who did you meet along the way? You may also need to look at the expectations you place on yourself. Are they too high? And unrealistic?

Goals are wonderful and are a guiding point when it comes to exercise and nutrition. But – be mindful of the expectations you place on yourself along the way. Talk to your coach or a trainer and get some support to ensure that your goals match the activity you’re participating in. Set yourself up for success!

Exercise as Medicine

Selling in a Strong Market

We would all agree that it has been difficult to get into a decent exercise routine over the last twelve months. However, with things slowly returning to a new ‘normal’, there’s no better time to begin to shed the COVID spread, and more importantly, establish some healthy habits for the future.

Are you wanting to sell to capitalise on the strong market, but worried about buying back into the market?

Very common barriers to exercise include: • Lack of time and motivation and uncertainty about what exercises to do • Feeling unsafe while exercising Accredited Exercise Physiologists can assist with overcoming these barriers and to help with the following: • Chronic disease prevention • M anagement of conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, chronic pain, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis

This is the most common question I’m being asked by my clients. The benefit for a seller in this market is that they hold all the power. A seller can demand certain terms to accommodate for their own movements. For example, we just sold a house in Wavell Heights with a ’30-Day Rent-Back Clause’. We advertised this from day one of the campaign so every buyer was aware of the circumstances in which they were purchasing. This is just one option. As a seller, you could also demand a 30/60/90 day settlement to allow you adequate time to purchase your next home.

• Achieving rehabilitation goals and improving quality of life

This strategy works as long as you are transparent with your demands from the very start of your campaign. The buyers will understand and make offers accordingly.

If you are uncertain about how to begin a safe and effective exercise program, consulting an Accredited Exercise Physiologist is a must.

If this applies to you, contact me on the details below and let me explain how we can navigate you through this market successfully.

New Flavours and New Tastes with a Middle Eastern Twist Vic’s Place Cafe, well-known for their delicious Middle Eastern flavours, has launched an exciting new menu. While still offering their popular favourites, owner Giulia Di Leo has introduced six completely new dishes, which have all been tried and tested by her loyal customers.

Learn about the Good Men of Padua College Padua College is the only school in Australia under the care of the Order of Friars Minor. Inspired by the teachings of St Francis, the Franciscan Friars established Padua College as a school to cater for boys from Year 5 to Year 12.

Over sixty years on, the College has grown to 1400 students and while there have clearly been some educational changes over this time, we still hold our Franciscan heritage very close to our heart. We deliver dynamic, innovative pedagogy in the three phases of learning from Year 5 to Year 12.

“We invited our customers to try our new menu and got an amazing response,” says Giulia. “We incorporated their feedback and are now offering unique new dishes, including a Biscoff Manoush Pizza, a Middle Eastern flavoured slow-cooked beef brisket, and a delicious Tim Tam Chino.” Customers will also see new dessert items, new breakfast pizzas and new wrap flavours (on their famous manoush wrap base). Giulia, who opened Vic’s Place two years ago, prides herself on offering meals that aren’t normally cooked at home. “I’m personally not interested in basic waffles and eggs on toast,” says Giulia. “You come here when you want something cooked for you that’s unique and different.” Let Giulia and the team look after you – try the new menu items in store or order on UberEats.

We introduce our students to a wide range of belief systems and multi-faith disciplines and then introduce our students to a Catholic and Franciscan world view. This vision is permeated by our values of Joy, Courtesy, Humility, Simplicity and Peace. Nundah Village Dental talk children’s teeth The team at Nundah Village Dental recommends your child’s first visit is from 6-12 months, when the first tooth erupts. Why do baby teeth need fillings? Decay in baby teeth is common and needs to be treated as soon as possible. They are used to hold space for adult teeth until 12-14 years old. Leaving decay or removing a tooth early can lead to infection, pain or future orthodontic problems. When can my child brush their teeth alone? Tooth brushing is a fine motor skill and often children are unable to brush well until the age of 9. If your child can’t tie their shoelaces, often they don’t have the dexterity to brush well either. Surprised by some of these answers? If your child is due for an examination, Nundah Village Dental offers a heavily reduced fee for children’s appointments and welcomes children eligible under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme. Please call Jess, Adele, Linda or Tayla to book an appointment. Nundah Village Dental Shop 6/1231 Sandgate Rd, Nundah Ph. 3260 6200 www.nundahdental.com.au

Nundah History The Poisonous Murder of Daisy Zillman On 29 October 1912, Margaret Dorothy Zillman, known as Daisy, was murdered at Rosenthal near Warwick – a murder that today still remains a mystery. Daisy had been working as a companion to an elderly, frail woman at Rosenthal. She was due to return to her family in Caboolture to prepare for her wedding to a widower at Warwick. On the 29 October, Daisy received a box of chocolates in the mail addressed to her, which she set out with the afternoon tea. Daisy offered the chocolates to her employer and took one herself. Shortly afterwards, Daisy became too ill to continue her chores and found her elderly employee writhing in agony. Neighbours heard Daisy screaming, and ran to the house where they found her, gasping that she had been poisoned. They tried to administer an emetic, but Daisy was convulsing so violently that they were unable to do so; she died as they watched helplessly. Her employer's life was saved by a strong emetic. The police soon found the chocolates to be laced with strychnine. An inquest was held and a number of people were suspects, including Daisy's fiance and a woman who had lived with him for a period. The police arrested Daisy's fiance; he was tried, but not convicted. Although he was condemned by the community, he denied all charges and proclaimed his innocence until his death. Daisy is buried at the Nundah Historic Cemetery.

Local Breweries Win at Awards Night We always knew it – and now the whole state knows it too – Brisbane Northside has some of the best beers in Queensland! Aether Brewing, Fick Brewing Company and All Inn Brewing Co have been awarded a whopping 23 awards 1 at the 2021 Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show Beer Awards. Aether Brewing, located in Northgate, took home seven awards, including winner of the Best Queensland Beer of Show and Winner of Champion Strong Beer for Hop Skip Jump IPA.

2

“Winning an award such as Queensland’s best beer is a huge deal for us at Aether, especially with Queensland being the home of some of the best breweries in Australia,’ says Aether Brewing owner Dave Ward. “It reminds us that our constant strive to be better and make better beer is being seen and recognised. The whole Aether family is so very proud of this achievement, and it definitely means we will be pushing even harder to make the best beer we can!” Fellow Northgate brewery, Fick Brewing Company, was awarded Champion, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.

"We were so honoured to take out a category and come home with a trophy, especially for the European-Style Ale which is our predominant style,’ says owners Nadresha and Fabri. “As a small brewery, getting awards and medals that judge the quality of our beer helps to make us feel like we’re doing something right. That beer was actually brewed as a one-off too, but looks like we’ll have to brew it again down the line.”

3 1 L yndon (All Inn Brewing Co), Dave (Aether Brewing) and Fabri (Fick Brewing Company)

All Inn Brewing Co in Banyo were awarded ten awards, including Champion Porter-Stout for Writersblock. “We are stoked that we won for our Writersblock – Milk Stout and picked up some other awards in the mix,” says General Manager, Lyndon Pasztor. “We want to thank the RNA, RQFWS, all the sponsors, the volunteers, breweries and, of course, our customers for allowing us the opportunity, supporting us and being a source of motivation for us to constantly strive to make better beer every time we step up on to the platform.” To view the full list of award-winning Brisbane northside beers, visit www.lovingnundah.com.au

Historic Parkland Orchard Park, Northgate Orchard Park at 62 Flower Street, Northgate is named in honour of early settlers, the Orchard family. Daniel Orchard, an accountant, and his wife, Lydia, purchased property in Northgate on the corner of Flower Street and Northgate Road in the early 1920s. There they ran a small dairy and chicken farm, supplying the local settlers with their produce.

Before her marriage, Lydia arrived in Australia with her parents, William and Mary Warburton and her four siblings from Liverpool, England, on the sailing ship “Renfrewshire” in 1884. The Warburton family were well-known pioneers in Northgate, with Lydia’s eldest brother, William John (affectionately known as “Warby”), being a prominent pig breeder and, for many years, principal pig judge at Queensland shows. When Daniel became ill, Lydia ran the farm in Flower Street. Daniel died at their residence “Medlock” in 1937 aged 72 years, and Lydia lived there until her death in 1957 aged 89 years. The farmhouse is no longer there. Today, Toombul Bowls Club stands on the corner of what was part of the old homestead. The park is named in memory of the Orchard family and is a welcome sight for the community to admire.

‘Come Together’ Spritz Cocktail Looking to make a cocktail at home that will impress your guests? Jackson Paul from Wooden Horse Restaurant and Bar in Clayfield has shared his take on a Spritz Cocktail – the very French ‘Come Together’ cocktail. Try your hand at making this one at home, then head in to Wooden Horse to work your way through the full cocktail list.

“We like to name our cocktails on the menu after famous Beatles’ songs, so I thought it was fitting to name this cocktail ‘Come Together’ because it brings two French products (Brandy and Chambord) together.”

Ingredients 10ml Brandy (I use St Remy VSOP) 40ml Chambord 3 dashes of Rhubarb bitters 5ml sugar syrup 5ml lemon juice 20ml soda water 90ml Prosecco Ice Directions Over ice, add all ingredients and garnish with a lemon wedge (inside the glass) and a mint sprig.

ANZAC Day, Sunday 25 April

The AttorneyGeneral visits Northside Connect It was wonderful to welcome Shannon Fentiman MP back to the Centre and update her on the work of the organisation over the last 6 years. Shannon visited our Centre back in 2015 while she was Communities Minister. Shannon is now the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence and continues to support the work of Northside Connect. Our local member, Leanne Linard MP, who is Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs also visited the centre.

International Women’s Day 2021 International Women’s Day was first celebrated in Sydney 1928 on March 25th and was organised by the Militant Women’s Movement of the Communist Party of Australia for equal work, equal pay, and paid leave as well as for an 8 hour working day for female retail workers. The following year (1929) the event spread to Brisbane. Annual marches started in 1931 in Melbourne and Sydney and are still held today. 1975 was designated as International Women's Year and the Whitlam government supported a series of events throughout the year, including the Women and Politics Conference in September, which considered how women were represented in Australian politics. From 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on the 8th of March. Today International Women’s Day is recognised with a diverse range of events, including fundraisers, rallies and marches. Brisbane’s International Women’s Day Breakfast has solid roots within the community and is one of the longest running International Women’s Day celebrations within Australia and was first held in 1990.

Due to COVID-19, Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch Members will not be able to hold their usual March and Service in Nundah Memorial Park. The ANZAC Dawn Service will still be held in line with current Queensland Government restrictions. Nundah ANZAC Dawn Service When: The Service will commence at 6.30am Where: Nundah Historic Cemetery, Hedley Avenue, Nundah All are welcome. The Banyo RSL Sub Branch will be holding a March and Service in Banyo. Banyo ANZAC March and Service Where: The March will start at the corner of Melville Place and St Vincents Road, Banyo When: March will commence at 7am The Service will be held at the conclusion of the March at the RSL Memorial, corner of Royal Parade and St Vincents Road, Banyo. A barbecue and refreshments will be available at the end of the Service. All members of the public are reminded of social distancing. Please note, there will be some road closures, with detours in place. Lest we Forget.

This year Northside Connect was invited to the International Women’s Day lunch hosted by our federal MP Anika Well, who was a legal volunteer with our legal service. It was inspirational to also hear from her federal parliamentary colleague, Tanya Plibersek, on how we can continue to strive towards equality and empowerment for women and girls.
