Kalinga Memorial Park The Kalinga Reserve was officially opened on 3 September 1910, with more than 400 locals in attendance. At that time, horses and cattle grazed on the pasture, but over the years, many improvements have been made. The honour gates at the entrance were the fundraising efforts of the Kalinga Progress Association and the local Ladies Patriotic Club. The opening was on 23 October 1920 and the gates would serve to remember the men who enlisted from the Kalinga district and fought for their country. Diggers Drive was opened in the park as a memorial to the district’s soldiers who did not return after WW1. The unemployed returned servicemen were given work and built a winding path and planted trees. In WW2, the park was used as a staging camp. Troops passing through the camp would have numbered 1,000 to 3,000, according to the size of the drafts required. On 3 July 2007, Kalinga Reserve was listed on the Queensland Heritage register. On 21 August 2019, Brisbane City Council held a rededication ceremony, with the park renamed Kalinga Memorial Park. Considerable improvements to the park have been made, including playing fields, a large playground, barbecues, bike path, dog park and more.

Rhino Flooring is tucked away in the industrial area of Northgate and services the needs of residential and commercial builders for floor coverings. When a client presents a problem, Rhino Flooring promptly provides a solution – take Wynnum’s James Hanley for example.

Last year Sandgate’s Robyn Ridings engaged Rhino Flooring Range to rip up the old flooring in her café Baaia and replace it with her preferred product line.

After a consultation with Sales Executive Andrea Ode, James engaged Rhino Flooring to install their Flooring Range throughout his home.

Robyn chose Natural Hybrid Vinyl Plank in Beach Oak and seven months later she’s elated with the superior quality of the product, which copes with a huge amount of customer foot traffic and food and drink spillages, seven days a week.

The team arrived on the agreed date, but the job was cancelled when James’ street was blacked out due to a power outage. Andrea leapt into action and rearranged a new date to accommodate James’ busy lifestyle. Take advantage of Rhino's Price Point Guarantee, which ensures they will never be beaten on price, or visit their show room at 293 Earnshaw Road, Northgate, from 8am-4pm Monday-Wednesday and 8am-3pm Thursday and Friday.

Brisbane builder Dwain Labuschewski is a big fan of the Rhino Flooring Range – so much so that he has installed the products in his past three new home builds.

“I recommend Rhino Flooring Range to anyone considering upgrading their home or workplace flooring,” Robyn said. “My floors still look new, they’re a breeze to clean and maintain.”

The Owner of Hezzelic Homes Pty Ltd, Dwain always uses Rhino's Natural Hybrid Flooring and says he absolutely loves the colour range that they offer.

Rhino's Natural Hybrid Flooring allows your home to benefit from the natural beauty of timber while also benefiting from the price and durability of superior quality vinyl. The ‘Burbank’ range of Natural Hybrid features 10 gorgeous colours and they ‘Santa Monica’ range boasts a selection of six colours.

“I recommend Rhino Flooring Range to anyone considering upgrading their home or workplace flooring.”

Movement: Medicine for your Mental Health

4 Questions To Ask Your Agent

The relationship between our mind and body matters when it comes to overall well-being. This message has become increasingly important as we navigate through a global pandemic. Exercise has an important role in the management of mental illness – even one hour of exercise weekly can aid in preventing depression!

Real estate agents are fountains of untapped knowledge so when it comes to selling your home, don’t under-utilise this resource! Our top 4 questions to ask your real estate agent include:

Regular exercise can: • Improve your mood, confidence, energy levels and sleep quality • Reduce symptoms of mental health conditions • Improve chronic disease outcomes eg type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease

1. How do you think I should sell my home? From auctions to written offers, there are countless ways to sell, so ask what they think suits your situation best.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists have the skills and knowledge to support you through your journey by: • Setting realistic, individualised goals and plans • Recognising and overcoming barriers • Empowering you through education and a safe environment

3. What price do you think I could sell for? Once you have your value estimate, it’s good to talk about evidence and key features to maximise your sale value.

Are you wanting to commence exercise, but experiencing challenges? Book an appointment with an Exercise Physiologist at The Joint to improve your health through appropriately designed exercise. The Joint | 9/1220 Sandgate Rd, Nundah and 1/62 Crockford St, Northgate Ph: 3191 4455 | www.thejointnundah.com | thejointnundah

2. What properties have you recently sold? It’s good to know what areas and property styles your agent has worked with before, as reassurance.

4. How can I improve my chances of selling? Your agent should understand local buyers and know what tips and tricks you can apply to boost your sale value. Don’t have an agent? We can help with all your questions. Contact us today. Jordan McLennan Properties | Ph: 0405 368 111 www.jordanmclennan.com | jordan@jordanmclennan.com

LEGAL MATTERS

Staying Motivated in Winter

Don’t Assume You’re Guilty

Hands up if you’re feeling the cold? The cold weather brings the desire to stay rugged up and hit the snooze button on repeat.

For many of us, getting our driver’s licence happened a long time ago. While many road rules remain the same, there have been many changes over the years. You may not know all of the amended rules of the road or all of the possible defences.

The colder months are typically a time to go inward. Many animals choose to hibernate during winter – we can appreciate why! But hibernation brings consequences such as weight gain, decrease in strength and a messed-up routine.

While it is tempting to reduce your physical activity during the winter months, as the old saying goes “summer bodies are made in winter”. There is a reason that the spring months see a spike in people joining gyms – you are trying to undo what has been done during winter! Instead, you are now in charge of the post-winter impact to your health. The cold weather is not a good enough excuse to cut back or stop physical activity. You may need to change it up a little and move some of your outdoor activities indoors, if the cold is unbearable for you, or appoint an accountability person to help you through the colder months.

Additionally, today there are many more rules governing our business operations, neighbourhood and behaviours, including Council fines.

If you have recently received a fine or a Notice to Appear, and you are not sure you deserved it, it’s probably worthwhile talking to a lawyer. No decent lawyer is going to guarantee that you can “beat the rap” as they say in the movies, but a consultation will help you understand the circumstances, and may even help you with minimising the disruption and inconvenience, and even the fine, arising from the alleged offence.

Do not use the colder weather as an excuse. Yes, it is cold. But it could be colder. At least we are not in Antarctica!

If you’ve been fined or charged for something, it’s free to call us for a quick chat with an experienced lawyer about the circumstances and the law, even if you ultimately decide to pay the fine or represent yourself in Court.

The Budget & Businesses – What does the 2022 Federal Budget mean for your Business? Recently, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the 2022 Federal Budget, with a large focus on Australia’s economic recovery. But what does this budget mean for small businesses? First, the full expensing of eligible assets is being extended to 30 June 2023. Historically, when a business purchased an asset, they had to depreciate this over numerous years for tax purposes. However, businesses can now ‘write-off’ eligible assets instantly for tax purposes. This is incredibly beneficial for businesses as this can lower tax bills significantly. If you are thinking of purchasing a new asset for your business, now might be the time to do it! Second, the temporary ‘loss carry back’ offset is going to be extended for a further year. If you own a business, ask yourself these questions: • Did your business make a loss in the 2019 or 2020 financial years?

If you answered yes to both those questions you may benefit from the loss carry back offsets significantly. Last, superannuation traditionally did not have to be paid to employees who earn less than $450/month. However, once royal assent is received, this threshold will be removed. It is crucial that business owners are aware of these possible changes. At DFK Hirn Newey, we are passionate about assisting local businesses and have been since starting in 1978. Curious about what we can do for your business? Contact us for a free, no-obligation meeting. DFK Hirn Newey 1143 Sandgate Road, Nundah | Ph: 3266 1488 www.dfkhn.com.au | dfkhirnnewey

• Did your business make a taxable profit in the years before this?

Lowering Blood Pressure Laura Benn, 24fit Club Manager & Nutritionist

High blood pressure affects over 1/3 of Australians and is one of the leading risk factors for death and disability across the world. Laura gave us some tips on how to lower your blood pressure. If you are at risk of (or currently experiencing) high blood pressure, there are many non-medicinal ways to reduce your risk and make a big difference to your overall health. Eating a variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups (plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, lean meat and reduced-fat dairy) will not only provide you with vital nutrients for overall health, but by eating these whole (non-processed) foods, you will help your body stabilise your blood sugar levels and the high amount of fibre in fruit and vegetables (leave those skins on!) has been shown to not only help reduce blood pressure, but reduce cholesterol levels as well. Combining a nutritious diet with the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day will also strengthen your heart, enabling it to pump more with less effort – ultimately reducing your blood pressure! Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce

National Volunteering Week Northside Connect celebrated National Volunteering Week from May 17 to 23 by gifting our amazing volunteers freshly baked cupcakes and a certificate to acknowledge their hard work at the Centre. Volunteers assist in providing legal advice, running groups, food relief, administration and our community garden. Without them, Northside Connect could not provide all the programs and services that we currently do. National Volunteer Week celebrates the invaluable contributions of the individuals who volunteer their time within the communities throughout Australia. Volunteering Australia, alongside Volunteering Queensland and other state peak bodies celebrated the important work these amazing volunteers do. This year, during volunteer week more than 700,000 Queenslanders were acknowledged for their hard work. These individuals make an exceptional impact on other individuals, communities and the environment.

Public submissions are now open for the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce. We’re inviting women, including victims and survivors of domestic and family violence, to come forward and talk about their experiences dealing with the criminal justice system. Women face barriers when they seek help and report on violence, and we know it can draw out the legal process and add to their trauma.

The Taskforce, chaired by the Honourable Margaret McMurdo AC, is investigating these barriers and wants to hear directly from Queensland women to inform this vital work. Submissions can be made in confidence through the secure portal: www.womenstaskforce.qld.gov.au

YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE We all win by supporting local

Coercive Control Event Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness and to send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families, homes, workplaces and communities will not be tolerated. Here at Northside Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month Connect, for this Coercive Control extremely important cause we hosted A community education event a Coercive Control awareness and information sharing morning on the 27 May. The event was attended by 65 members of the public, local businesses and specialist workers who listened to survivor stories and shared knowledge. A panel of practitioners from a range of specialist areas including legal, workplace, young women and women with intellectual and learning disabilities answered questions and shared experiences and awareness of this complex form of abuse. The event was very successful with attendees commenting that they had learned a lot about how coercive control manifests in abusive relationships. Many attendees reported that they felt more confident in recognising the signs and responding to survivors in a positive way moving forwards both in a professional and personal context.
