Local Federal Funding Success Fifteen northside organisations will share in $150,000 worth of grants through the latest round of the Lilley Stronger Communities Programme. With fundraising activities limited in the past 18 months due to the pandemic, demand for funding assistance far outstripped the Lilley allocation. Over 60 expressions of interest were received from local not-for-profit organisations, requesting more than $800,000 in funding. Nundah organisations that were successful include Virginia United Football Club ($10,000 for new player shelters), Cystic Fibrosis Bookshop ($7,060 for office equipment) and Norths Juniors Rugby League Club ($13,000 for new shade shelters). Anika Wells MP has requested an increase in the grant pool for future rounds to assist with the current demand for financial assistance from local organisations. Sounds of Nundah Studios opens at Nundah State School Nundah State School has opened a brand-new, modern music facility for students. The Sounds of Nundah Studios was made possible through a partnership with Education Queensland, and a large fundraising effort from the school and the school’s P&C. Principal Deb Cox says, ‘We are very proud of our growing arts presence and the evidence of our creative gift being alive and well across the school. We know that creativity also grows our other gifts of optimism, resilience and collaboration, and grows well as our brains generally.’ The Sound of Nundah Studios was officially opened by The Honourable Leanne Linard MP on 16 July 2021. Future plans include more seating and tables, portable play equipment and ramp access from the carpark. Nundah State School | 41 Bage Street, Nundah | Ph: 3635 5888 Visit lovingnundah.com.au

Four Simple Steps Before Meeting a Lawyer
Let Go – I Dare You
Going to meet a lawyer for the first time can be scary. If you need a lawyer, then these simple steps will help you prepare and get the most out of your first meeting.
'Letting Go' is one of the Mindful Attitudes proposed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. To let go means to cease having control; cease ‘needing to know’; cease the need to always plan the journey ahead. Letting go means allowing the 'stuff' we carry to float away. For example, if you hold onto a grudge, the only person who suffers from this is you.
First, make sure you can easily explain the legal problem you have. Being able to clearly and succinctly explain the issue will allow the lawyer to quickly ascertain whether they can help you, or refer you to someone else with the necessary expertise. Second, write out a simple timeline of events and take it with you to your first meeting. This will help your lawyer quickly understand the history of the dispute. Third, make sure you take all the important documents with you (or at least good photocopies), and make sure they are in date order. Last, feel free to do some online research before your meeting. For more important information about preparing for your first meeting with a lawyer, or for free articles about a range of different legal matters, visit shorestonelegal.com.au. As Buddha says 'having a grudge is like swallowing poison and hoping that the other person dies’. Letting go is having trust. The truth is, trust is an everyday event for most people. We trust that our partner will come home from work; we have faith that we’ll be paid on time so that the bills get paid; we trust the dentist during a procedure; every night when we fall asleep, we are performing the ultimate act of letting go. If only we were able to trust and let go more readily when it comes to our own self judgement and the day-to-day anxieties we all experience. So, let go! I dare you. See if you can experiment with seeing and feeling things for what they are, and not what your mind makes you think they ought to be. Written by Davina Donovan, Psychologist. Sports Injury Prevention Protocols Footy in Queensland is well and truly alive! The sunshine state has been lucky enough to host three State of Origin games and both the NRL and AFL teams for the rest of the season. As the physiotherapist for the Norths Devils Intrust Super Cup team, I see a few more injuries towards the back end of the season as competition intensifies and training ramps up. Common injuries in rugby league include: • Muscle tears
• Knee injuries
• Shoulder impact injuries
• Ankle sprains including syndesmosis injury
It’s important to remember that prevention is better than cure. There are some great evidence-based sports injury prevention protocols that can be guided by a physiotherapist. Now is a good time to assess if you’re on track for the end of the season. These programs always involve warm-up and stretching, ‘pre-activations’, strength, plyometrics, proprioception (getting the brain connected to the body) and sports-specific drills.
The Huge Uptrend of Property Development in 4012 As demand for properties in Brisbane heats up, developers are moving in to stake their claim. There has been a sharp increase in new developments throughout the 4012 postcode. Developers are buying up multiple blocks, substantially renovating or demolishing the houses, and then densifying with townhouses and unit complexes. This is reflected in the new record prices achieved for a 3-bedroom townhouse ($890,000 in Nundah) and a brand-new family home ($2,227,000 in Wavell Heights). With a steady rise in interstate migration and the resurgence of confidence in off-the-plan sales, buyers should get in quickly as demand for new developments will only continue to rise.
For guidance with sports injury prevention or treatment, make an appointment at The Joint today.
Having sold over 50 brand-new apartments and townhouses in the last 5 years, there is no-one better suited to sell your brand new apartment/ townhouse or development site.

Quality Chiropractic Care For Over 37 Years When Dr Ian Maitland opened Nundah Family Chiropractic in 1984, he didn’t realise how much of a family endeavour it would be. But 37 years later, Dr Ian Maitland is thrilled to be working at the clinic alongside his wife Sue, and children Dr Ben Maitland and Dr Zoe Maitland. Joining the Nundah Family Chiropractic team are accomplished chiropractors Dr Joshua Steen, Dr Xavier Hine and Dr Cameron Rigby. The experienced team of six chiropractors are passionate about providing the best care for the community.
“The distinguishing factor about our clinic is our use of Applied Kinesiology to help treat health problems,” says Dr Ian. “Our holistic approach allows us to treat our patients as unique individuals with different needs. We look at all lifestyle factors, including diet, nutrition and gut function, and also look at our patients' spiritual and emotional wellbeing.” Applied Kinesiology uses manual muscle testing to evaluate the patient’s health and to find the underlying cause of health concerns. This, combined with chiropractic care, can assist with joint and muscular problems, relief of back pain and headaches and a wide range of health problems. The Nundah Family Chiropractic team welcomes new patients. If you would like to make your health a priority, book a consultation today.

This is. Rosa. Mother. Refugee. Survivor. Charity Founder. Rosa has lived peacefully in Brisbane after fleeing conflict in South Sudan, via Egypt, 22 years ago. She had seven children with her – three her own and four were her nieces and nephews.
Rosa has learned new skills and shared her love of her culture and food through the Nundah Good Food Project (a now self-sufficient ‘child’ of Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative). They offer cooking lessons and operate a food truck with authentic deliciousness from around the globe, as well as create employment opportunities for asylum seekers and help them to build new lives in a new community. Both a teacher and a daughter of a teacher, Rosa is only too aware of the importance of education in helping to break the cycle of poverty and suffering of her people in South Sudan. About 40% of the population is under 15 years of age. This has driven Rosa to start her own charity ‘Project Hope South Sudan Inc’ with the main goal of bringing education to those most in need. Supporting our Veterans – the colourful history of the Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch Building Nestled in Boyd Park is the Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch building. The building was previously the clubhouse of the Northgate Girl Guides, being built by community labour in 1933. It was situated in Cameron St, Northgate. In 1971 the clubhouse was moved to its present location in Boyd Park and the Girl Guides met there until 1999, when the group combined with the Wavell Heights group. This left the building empty and in 2000, the Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch applied to lease the building. The Sub Branch delivers positive outcomes for veterans and the community, and coordinates local services. An important role Made with love in Nundah.
of the Sub Branch is to visit the district’s schools, to talk about their involvement during war time and to invite students to participate in the local services. Outside the building there is an avenue of trees growing along the path, planted in memory of the men and women who fought for our country. It is known as ‘The Hoop Pine Memorial Walk’ and a plaque on the path honours veterans. Inside the building is a library and memorabilia collected by the Sub Branch. Any time you see the Australian flag flying on the flagpole outside the building, it tells you that the building is open to all who wish to visit.

Tell us a bit about your film. How We Roll is the second short film from Brisbane Director, Mitchell Bailey. The story is about a topic close to heart; learning to love yourself and how to take the first steps towards that journey. It follows Logan Davis after his break-up with his girlfriend. Logan is forced to reflect on his relationship and starts to realise that he is worth more than the way he was treated. It’s about taking the first step and realising that self-love really is a journey and once you embark on it, it will change your life.

What has been the most difficult aspect to getting this project in production? The most difficult aspect has definitely been crowdfunding to raise money for the film. We all care about this film immensely and want it to look the best it can and we definitely found out how easily everything adds up.
How We Roll A number of Brisbane and Gold Coast filmmakers studying at the JMC Academy chose Nundah’s popular Archie Brothers Cirque Electric as the backdrop of their new short film. We spoke to Producer Olivia Pickering about the project and the highlights and challenges they’ve faced.
Where will people be able to view the film? We are currently in post-production, so the director, editor and sound designer are working hard to finish the film. We plan on putting How We Roll through a film festival circuit, before hopefully having a local cinema premiere. With some luck it might end up on an online streaming platform for short films. You can watch the trailer now at pozible.com/profile/how-we-roll-1.
How We Roll is being financed by donations – if you’d like to contribute to help make this film made (and also score a thank you in the credits!) visit: pozible.com/profile/how-we-roll-1 or howwerollshortfilm.

What has been the highlight of getting this project in production? The highlight has been seeing all our hard work in pre-production pay off as soon as we get to set. We started at 4am and worked until midday for five days while filming. It's so rewarding – after all our hard work – to see the film come to life.

Over 100 years of remembering Leslie One of the most well-known gravesites at the Nundah Historic Cemetery belongs to Leslie Francis Wegner.
Leslie died of peritonitis in 1911, aged just 9 years old. His devastated parents commissioned a statue to be sculptured from a photograph of the young boy.
Memberships are available for the Nundah & Districts Historical Society – for more information email nundahhistoricalsoc@bigpond.com. Nundah Historic Cemetery 86 Hedley Avenue, Nundah
Dressed in early twentieth-century clothing, Leslie’s statue is sometimes mistaken for a small girl, but this was the style in the early twentieth century for young boys. In 2013, historian and ghost tour operator, Jack Simms, campaigned for the gravesite to be restored after vandals had damaged it. The careful restoration was funded by Brisbane Ghost Tours Haunted Heritage Fund, which seeks to restore and repair things of historic significance. The stonemason who was brought in to restore the gravesite, Ray Batstone of Batstones Stone Masonry, was the great-great-grandson of the original stonemason (William Batstone) who carved the statue and memorial back in 1911. Leslie’s gravesite is now over 110 years old and, thanks to the delicate restoration, the statue has been preserved for many years to come.

New Principal Solicitor at Brisbane North Community Legal Service
Seeking Volunteers
Northside Connect welcomes a new Principal Solicitor to the Brisbane North Community Legal Service. As of 1 July 2021, Eugene White, who has been the Principal Solicitor for 13 years, has handed over duties to Yolandi Beer. Yolandi, who has been with Brisbane North Community Legal Service for 2.5 years will continue with her role as family law/domestic violence solicitor, in addition to her new responsibilities. Eugene will continue to be a generalist solicitor and undertake the non-family law community legal education function at the service. Eugene is leaving a significant legacy from his time as Principal Solicitor at Northside Connect.
Northside Connect is seeking volunteers to fill the following positions:
“The commitment and expertise he gave to this role is reflected in the quality of services that are delivered through Brisbane North Community Legal Service,” says Northside Connect Coordinator, Sharon Gingell. “The Management Committee, volunteers and staff greatly appreciate his dedication to the organisation and we look forward to the next chapter of a new Principal Solicitor and Eugene staying on as the Generalist Solicitor.” For more information on the Brisbane North Community Legal Service, visit https://northsideconnect.org.au/legal-service or call 3260 6820.

New Law – Mandatory Reporting Child Sexual Abuse From 5 July 2021 it will be a criminal offence if you fail to report sexual offending against a child by another adult to the police. The new law is effective from 5 July 2021 and applicable to ALL adults. If you form a reasonable belief that a child has been sexually assaulted by another adult you MUST report it to the police. Failure to report can carry a maximum penalty of 3 years’ imprisonment. Despite several concerns raised for unintended consequences of the legislation, it was passed and is enforceable as of 5 July 2021. Ensure you know your obligations to report and also be aware of service providers' obligations to report information you might be sharing. For further information, visit the QLD Government website: https://www.qld.gov.au.
