Tom’s Confectionery Warehouse – an Exciting New Chapter... A new owner has come to the rescue to prevent Tom’s Confectionery Warehouse from closing after 39 years in business. Tom Jeanes, who founded Tom’s Confectionery Warehouse in 1982, passed away aged 78 years in June this year. The store was on the verge of liquidation when restaurant owner Adiel Ben-karmona purchased the store.

The principal of Clayfield College, Dr Andrew Cousins, says a move to coeducational classes in upper grades was driven by parents, with many families preferring a fully coeducational system. The College will also offer coeducational boarding for boys and girls in Years 5 to 12 in future years. Clayfield College 23 Gregory Street, Clayfield clayfield.qld.edu.au

Adiel, who owns Pilpel Restaurant in Redcliffe, is looking forward to continuing Tom’s work, and says he ‘feels like a kid in a candy shop’, since purchasing the business. Adiel will keep the name and location the same, and will honour Tom’s legacy in the new renovations. Tom’s Confectionery Warehouse will re-open in October after undergoing a full renovation, which will include interactive elements (including a Willy Wonka World!) A new burger bar has opened in Nundah, which draws inspiration from the 70s soul music scene and New York burger joints. After visiting popular New York burger restaurants Five Guys, 5 Napkin Burger and Shake Shack, owners Denis and Lina, who have run several cafes, decided that now was the time to bring mouth-watering burgers to Brisbane. Denis and Lina have a clear vision for their burger joint, with a focus on fresh, fast, affordable burgers and dogs. So much thought has gone into Soul Brothers – the store decor, the packaging, and most importantly – the menu. The menu is concise, with six burger options (Basic, Spicy, Standard, Bacon,

Made with love in Nundah.

Each ingredient in the menu has been sourced with care – from the local potato buns, to the exclusive brisket rump patty used in the beef burgers. The pickles are from Brisbane legend, Picklehead Pickles, and the shakes are made using a soft-serve machine with fresh flavours. Oh, did we mention the drinks yet? Because you’ll want to try these shake flavours – vanilla bean, Hershey choc, peanut butter, Oreo and Kit-Kit. If soda is more your taste, they have plenty of flavours, including Dr Pepper and

Cherry Coke. Plus, add icecream to any soda to make it a spider. Beer is also on the menu, with Miller, Budweiser, Pure Blond and Heinken available. We can see Soul Brothers is going to be an instant neighbourfood fixture – head in now to enjoy good food and good tunes.

Important Changes to Family Law As of September 2021, all family law matters (including divorce applications, disputes about property settlement, and parenting disputes) are now dealt with by the newly created Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. This is a very monumental change to family law, with many new rules and procedures about separation and parenting. These important changes will hopefully reduce legal costs, and the time taken to resolve family law disputes. Importantly, the changes underpin a stronger focus on alternative dispute resolution for settling family

law disputes. This is designed to avoid expensive and extremely difficult court proceedings. Arguably, family law has now become much more proscriptive and it is likely that litigants who are not fully prepared or are unwilling to quickly progress a family law dispute to settlement, will find themselves in some difficulty without proper legal advice. If you (or members of your family) need advice about a family law matter, or need assistance with the new family law rules and procedures, please get in touch with Shorestone Legal for a free consult.

Preventing Sport Injuries in Kids and Teens As we head into term 4, school, club and representative sports are well underway. Throw into this the added stressors of lockdowns, home schooling, ongoing assessment and extracurricular activities and it makes for a very busy time of year! Child and youth injuries are very common this time of year due to busy schedules, limited rest and recovery times, and continual growth and developmental changes. One thing we know is that pain and injury in the younger population is real and needs to be managed appropriately.

Here are some tips to prevent youth injury, pain and burnout: 1. D o not exceed one hour of training per year of age. For example, aim for less than 14 hours a week for a 14-year-old. 2. D o not specialise in sports too early under 14 years. 3. Spending more time training than on free play increases the risk of injury. 4. Pain and injury risks increase when a young person is going through a growth spurt (overuse or acute injury). Most importantly, keep it fun!

Ways to Increase Your Properties Value Renovating is a popular choice by homeowners in 4012. But before you begin, it’s important to lay out a game plan. You need to determine what improvements you can make that will add value to your home. The first place to start is to check every nook and cranny of your home and repair the items that aren’t currently working. Trust me, any buyer would prefer a properly functioning door over a fancy bathtub. Kitchens and bathrooms are the ideal spots to update as they are important to buyers and are high-traffic areas.

You may want to change bathroom fixtures, paint the kitchen cabinet doors, or replace the benchtops to improve its look. A fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceiling is an inexpensive option and can release new life back into your home. Don’t overlook placing new turf down in your yard, mulching your garden beds, or adding new plants are a great option to improve the appearance from the street. If you’re still unsure of what areas are going to provide you with the largest return, contact me and I’ll point you in the right direction.

NUNDAH NOW INC LOCAL BUSINESS

Businesses adapt to survive... and thrive

Nundah locals Tane and Sam noticed that many pet owners were struggling to get quality pet products for their much-loved dogs. When the COVID-19 lockdowns began, and people were constantly at home with their pets, they decided it was the time to launch The Puptisserie, an online, artisan dog treat bakery based in Nundah.

These four Nundah small businesses have used all their business sense and creativity to find new ways to connect with customers and thrive in the pandemic.

‘We couldn’t find high-quality, baked treats without terrible preservatives or additives,’ they said. ‘So we started making our own that could be delivered via courier to people stuck at home.’ With pet ownership increasing dramatically in 2020, The Puptisserie has grown, however they are happy to stick with their current online service.

Sparkling in the online space After being made redundant from her corporate job, Nikki Kelly decided to start a personalised jewellery brand. Making about 30 pieces a week from her garage, Nikki enjoyed the creative aspects of the role, and the flexibility the business allowed her young family. Then, in 2020, the global pandemic swept the world, and Nikki and the team were inundated as more and more people turned to online shopping.

‘We were in a different kind of pickle to other retailers – because we suddenly couldn’t keep up with demand,’ says Nikki. ‘We were able to employ people from other industries to help us – even a friend who’s a dentist worked with us for a few weeks!’

Qualia Wealth is a financial planning business located in Nundah. After a busy eighteen months of moving offices in Nundah and rebranding the business, the team were kept busy again when the global pandemic affected financial markets, business operations and job security. Founder Tom Davis and Adviser Chris Broome had to pivot services in order to assist them in a safe manner during restrictions.

Financial Fundamentals 1. Understand where you are 2. Know where you want to be 3. Make a plan to get there 4. Take the steps necessary 5. Check in on your plan

Nikki’s team has now grown to a team of 11, making between 450 to 1,000 pieces per week.

‘Financial advice is relationshipbased, so face-to-face interaction has generally been preferred by clients and advisers. We were forced to adopt different technologies in our business, including Zoom meetings, which we were previously a little hesitant towards.’ said Tom.

‘2022 sees us moving more into the retail space as opposed to just being online,’ says Nikki. ‘We're planning a lot of expos and possibly even a shopfront space if we find the right commercial building.’

Clients have embraced the ease of online meetings, and Tom and Chris have found a fair amount of efficiency in the online processes, which has been a nice byproduct from a difficult time.

What is... the Pioneers’ Monument?

SMALL BUSINESS

A chapter of Queensland’s history stands in the shade of a Poinciana tree at the northern entrance to Nundah Village.

Owners Josh and Brooke opened Fraser Road Coffee in October last year.

Built of local white granite, the monument has stood in place since 1938 when the community of Nundah celebrated 100 years since missionaries arrived in the area.

“We didn’t expect to grow as quickly as we have, but the support from our customers has been absolutely amazing.”

A year of ‘hectic but awesome’ “The first year has been pretty hectic, but it’s been awesome,” says Josh.

Josh and Brooke are serious about their coffee and use the Tortoise & the Hare Blend from Sunny Coast roasters Tim Adams Specialty Coffee.

In 1838, Dr John Dunmore Lang brought 10 young missionaries from Berlin on the ship “Minerva” to work among the Indigenous Australians of Moreton Bay and to teach them about Christianity. The missionaries built their primitive cottages on the hillside in the area we know today as Walkers Way, and they named the area Zion Hill. It was on a hillside, part of the area we know today as Walkers Way that they built their primitive cottages and named the area Zion Hill. These missionaries were frustrated in their effort to impart their teaching of Christianity to the Indigenous Australians, so after four years, they abandoned their mission and turned to farming. Mysterious Death in the Nundah Waterhole In 1848, the body of Reverend John Gregor was discovered at the bottom of a Nundah waterhole. The cause of his death still remains a mystery. John Gregor was a minister in Scotland, who travelled to Australia in 1837. He arrived in Brisbane and became the minister of the district of Moreton Bay, measuring over 60,000 square kilometres. He lived at German Station (Nundah), working out of a small church, which was attached to a lumber yard. His first report on his work was enthusiastic, but his second report was not so positive, with the Reverend disenhearted with those in his flock. In 1846, John Gregor had the unfortunate task of performing his brother’s burial service. His brother Andrew, a local grazier, and his heavily pregnant female servant had been killed at his property near Caboolture.

Two years later, in 1848, John told neighbour Theodore Franz that he was feeling the heat and was heading to the waterhole. About 10 minutes later, German missionary, John Peter Niquet came looking for John. Niquet and Franz went to the waterhole (which was about 5 metres deep) and after diving in, found his lifeless body. As soon as news reached Brisbane, the Police Magistrate proceeded to German Station where a coronial enquiry was held, trying to ascertain if John Gregor’s death was suicide, an accidental drowning or something more sinister. While the cause of his death was ruled an accidental drowning, many questioned the findings.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month

Northside Connect’s Resale Store

October is Sexual Violence Awareness Month, where the focus is on working towards the elimination of sexual violence in our community. This year’s theme is “Start by Believing”. The single biggest factor that stops victims and survivors of sexual violence speaking out, is the very real fear of not being believed.

On average, one in five women is likely to experience sexual violence over the course of her lifetime, and that assault is most likely to occur by someone she knows. Community attitudes that minimise or dismiss women’s allegations of sexual assault remain alarmingly high, with 42% of people believing that women make up claims of sexual assault to get back at men and 31% of people believing that rape allegations were a result of women experiencing regret after engaging in a sexual act. We need to start by believing all women, when they disclose the trauma of sexual violence. There is no one type of victim/survivor and no perfect victim. Women from all walks of life, ages, sexuality, socio-economic class, education or background can be a victim/survivor of sexual violence. This year Northside Connect workers, students and survivors participated in a Banner Making project which some participants will proudly carry at the Reclaim the Night March on Friday, 29 October. This project is a collaboration between the Northside Sexual Assault Action Network and the Northside Alliance Against Domestic Violence.

Northside Connect is working with Populace Threads to enhance our annual clothing charity drive, Bubbles & Brands, by creating an online Northside Connect resale store on the Populace Threads digital marketplace for pre-loved clothing and accessories.

This online presence on Populace Threads will allow our charity drive to run all year round, promoting the theme ‘Resale is the new Retail’. The online store will augment the outcomes of our traditional physical clothing drive event and, in the case of cancellation of this event as a result of COVID restrictions, provide an alternative platform for optimising revenue generating potential to provide critical social services to the community such as legal advice, domestic violence support, practical relief from life stressors and providing a safe place to connect. We chose to collaborate with Populace Threads because we believe in their passion for fashion sustainability. They provide an online clothing swap, shop and sell platform that lets people give a second use to their clothes rather than contributing to textile waste, reducing the overall impact on the environment. If you’d like to purchase from our Northside Connect Vendor Shop and support the good work we do, whilst securing yourself some beautiful fashion pieces, please look for us on www.populacethreads.com.au.

If you are a victim/survivor of sexual violence you can call 1800 RESPECT (737 732) for support and information about services available in your local area.
