Nundah local Gaylia Lee, from This is Me Photography embarked on an ambitious project to take 52 portraits in 52 weeks in 2021. She spent the year meeting locals, taking their photos and sharing their stories. Her subjects – people who live, work or love the local area – are our cover stars for this issue. Gaylia decided to start the challenge to help her gain more confidence and live courageously, while getting comfortable with rejection. “Every single participant surprised and delighted me by sharing their experiences and their willingness to be photographed,” says Gaylia. “With 52 portraits, I was able to share what an amazing community we have in images and words and capture a time capsule of Nundah 2021.” Gaylia said that it was surprising and beautiful to be reminded that regardless of our differences, we are all very similar.

LEGAL MATTERS with Aaron Ball from Shorestone Legal
Co-parenting in a pandemic The blessing, “May we live in interesting times” is, of course, meant to be ironic. It’s really a curse.
In these ‘interesting times’, it is important that all parents put the best interests of children first.
Unfortunately, it seems we are all still living in ‘interesting times’ in 2022.
Spending time with both parents and their families is important for children, unless there is an unacceptable risk to their safety. Denying or limiting children’s time with another parent, contrary to the intent of parenting orders, is likely to be very harmful to the children.
The announcement in January, about the delay to the start of the school year, certainly made ‘interesting times’ for many separated parents. Co-parenting arrangements are often scheduled in accordance with school holidays and the beginning of the new school term. This has led to confusion and, in some instances, unnecessary conflict between separated parents.
If you’re having problems with parenting arrangements, or the interpretation of family court orders, get advice from a family lawyer as soon as possible.

HEALTH & FITNESS with Davina Donovan and Rob Lloyd from Fitstop Nundah
Setting realistic goals for 2022! 2022 may not have started the way you hoped and your health and fitness goals might seem non-existent as a result. We’ve devised these 5 tips to get back on track, no matter where you’re at right now. 1. Be kind to yourself. What you want to achieve and what you mentally and physically can achieve right now might be different. That’s OK.
or drop a dress size at the start of the year. Instead, use tips 1 and 2 to set realistic expectations. 4. Talk to your trainers. Don’t be afraid to call on a trusted person to help set realistic health and fitness goals.
2. Hit reset. It’s OK to look back over the first part of the year and see it as a ‘write off’. This doesn’t mean that you abandon all your goals. Start again!
5. Start slow and reassess. Get moving and do something, even if it’s 1% of what is needed to achieve your goal. 1% is better than 0%. Come back to your goal list mid-month and readjust your goals based on your progress.
3. Lower your expectations. Perhaps you’re not going to lift a PB

Lower back pain – some common myths
Let’s tap into our new-found equity
2022 has thrown us a number of challenges, and one that we are seeing in the clinic is lower back pain. As a result of getting back into exercise and sitting at work again after holidays, this is a common complaint. Here are some MYTHS associated with back pain:
1. Cosmetic Renovation. The economical way to rejuvenate and refresh a space. Go from room to room and consider painting walls, revamping your fittings and fixtures, or undertaking some lighting adjustments.
1. My back is sore therefore it must be weak. Not true. The back is central to our entire body, and is built with intricate design to support us through daily life, plus some. It is a STRONG structure! 2. I need to ‘rest’ or lie down when my back is sore. Rest is absolutely important. Is it
the endgame? Of course not! It’s important to rest AND to move; too much of either can slow down recovery. 3. I need a scan to find out what’s wrong. Scans have their place, otherwise they would not be in use at all. However, both age-related change, and structural ‘abnormalities’ are totally NORMAL, and are very likely NOT the cause of your pain. The Joint runs a blog series on upgrading your Health IQ. The first series covers the spine. Visit our Instagram or website for more.
The Joint | 9/1220 Sandgate Rd, Nundah & 1/62 Crockford St, Northgate thejointnundah Ph: 3191 4455 | thejointnundah.com |
2. Refresh Tapware. It’s surprising how much of a transformation can be made by replacing old, tired tapware with something eye-catching and contemporary. 3. Consider Engaging a Designer. If you’re struggling for ideas, or have too many ideas, it’s sometimes beneficial to engage a professional.
They may have the missing piece to your puzzle. 4. Full Home Renovation/Knock Down Rebuild. Don’t be afraid to go big. If your kitchen would be more impactful as an open plan space, or you want to completely overhaul the 1970s bathroom, then these could be within your grasp with some proper planning and foresight. Remember, there’s always a line – it could be cheaper and more practical to knock down and start again. Need some advice? We are always here to guide you through your real estate journey.

A New Vision for Eyecare Plus Nundah Eyecare Plus welcomes new owner Raj Maiti to Nundah. Raj is looking forward to working with locals, helping them see in high definition and solving their eye problems. Raj has an extensive background in optometry, since graduating with a Bachelor of Optometry with Honours from The University of Auckland in 2013. He has treated patients aged from 3 to 101, and has worked with top eye surgeons in the fields of glaucoma, cataracts, LASIK and dry eye. Raj is passionate about helping locals with their eye health and especially if they have a condition called dry eye. Symptoms often include scratchy or stingy eyes.
Eyelids can also get itchy, watery and red at times. Dry eye is a condition in which a person cannot produce enough tears to nourish the eye or when tears are of poor quality. After carefully evaluating the signs and symptoms in the clinic, Raj creates a personalised treatment plan for his patients. “Thankfully in 2022 we have a lot of options for our patients,” says Raj. Outside work, you may spot Raj hiking and exploring the beaches with his family. Visit Raj for your next eye test, contact lenses, glasses and customised sunglasses for the outdoors.
Nundah’s First Police Officer Henry Charles Primrose applied to join the Police Force in 1877 at the age of thirty five years.
At the time of his induction he was married to Elizabeth Charlotte Titcombe. They had married at Dalby in 1864 and had eight children. Henry was stationed at Oxley, before being promoted to Senior Constable in 1881. Railway works had commenced at German Station, (Nundah), and a police station in the neighbourhood was requested. Senior Constable Henry Primrose was the first police officer at Nundah, transferring to the police quarters and lockup on Station Street, Nundah in 1884. Most of his duties took him away from the station and he covered the distances on horseback – the quickest means of transport. Senior Constable Primrose remained at Nundah until 1890 and then transferred to Nerang. He then went on to Sandgate and then Beenleigh, before his retirement on 15 October, 1907. He died at his home in Park Road, Yeronga, on the 9 October 1923 at the age of 81. In honour of his position as Nundah’s first Police Officer, the Nundah & Districts Historical Society Inc. suggested the name ‘Primrose Lane’ for the lane running off Boyd Road in his memory.

THE SUBURBAN BUSINESS HUB:
providing stability and opportunity in uncertain times
Finding a free space for your business to co-work, meet, learn and grow might sound too good to be true, but for Melanie MacDonald, Director of Science of Social, Brisbane City Council’s Suburban Business Hub was exactly what her small business needed. Like many businesses, when the coronavirus pandemic began in early 2020, Science of Social was left renting an office that wasn’t being used. Melanie’s staff were working from home or stuck in other states, and for an extended period, Melanie even found herself working from New Zealand. Working remotely had become their new normal, so Melanie
8
decided to give up their office lease and started thinking outside the box for options that would allow her team to meet once a week. “We thought maybe we could find a company who will let us use their office on a Friday, while it’s mostly vacant,” Melanie said. “We stumbled across the Suburban Business Hub and it was just perfect because it gives us a chance to get together.”
The Suburban Business Hub opened in April 2021, to support Brisbane businesses with a free working space to start, run and grow. At the hub you can attend a range of events such as social media workshops and monthly local business morning teas, find out about free Council business support services, co-work with colleagues or run meetings and training sessions. Facilities include desks, free wi-fi, air conditioning, laptop connectivity to AV equipment, whiteboards and a kitchenette. For Melanie, the hub has meant she can focus on growing her business during uncertain times. “We have created two new jobs that we wouldn’t have created if we were still paying for rent,” she said. Melanie hopes to one day be back in their own office, but for now
she’s found the perfect balance to working remotely, co-working and growing her business at the hub. Science of Social aren’t the only Brisbane business who have found the space useful. Nundah Village Dental has found the Suburban Business Hub the perfect location to run training for their 24 staff. “Our business is set out to see patients in treatment rooms and this limits our spaces for learning and training,” Clinical Manager, Megan Dore said. “We have used the facility as a learning space for our staff who are currently completing Certificate III studies in Dental Assisting. “Staff have been able to complete webinars away from the hustle and bustle and we have hosted full staff training and planning sessions.”
Megan believes the hub has added value to the Nundah business community. “As a business in Nundah for over 30 years these spaces absolutely add value to the success of the future of the businesses in the area,” she said. Michaela Felsch, Employer Engagement Partner from MatchWorks was also pleased to discover the Suburban Business Hub around the corner from their office. “MatchWorks has several sites in and around Brisbane, so the hub provides us with the space and opportunity to come together as one team, instead of meeting over Zoom,” she said. “I have been to several networking events. Over time the events have gotten bigger, as word has spread about the space, meaning there’s
more opportunity to meet other like-minded people.” Michaela has also found the hub a space to network and meet new people. “When there’s been events here, I’ve met potential customers and potential suppliers,” she said. The unexpected bonus of the free space has been having access to an onsite Business Liaison Officer. “They’ve been really good at helping us understand what other resources Council has available,” she said. The Suburban Business Hub is located at 16 Aspinall Street, Nundah. Drop in between 8.30am4.30pm, Monday to Friday or attend the monthly morning tea on the second Friday of every month (cancelled for February 2022 only) and meet other local businesses.

Our Local Representatives The plans for our local area for 2022
Anika Wells MP
Leanne Linard MP
Cr Adam Allan
Federal Member for Lilley
Member for Nudgee and Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs
Northgate Ward
The summer season has delivered a number of challenges for Northsiders, who are experiencing the impacts of the pandemic on their health, work and daily lives. My work as your Federal MP continues and I am currently preparing the Lilley 2022/23 Budget submission to deliver to the Federal Treasurer when parliament returns. It will outline the projects we need funded on the Northside to improve our roads, deliver local infrastructure, and identify community projects to create new jobs and boost our local economy. I was pleased to announce, along with Labor’s Shadow Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, that I have secured $5 million for a planning study into Gympie Rd, should Labor win government at this year’s federal election. This commitment is in response to my petition, which was signed by almost 500 Lilley residents, asking for this traffic safety issue to be resolved. A win at the election will also enable me to get cracking on delivering a new $3 million clubhouse for the Brisbane Netball Association. I’m proud to serve as your federal representative and I will continue to fight for your future.
At a State Government level, I’m thrilled to say there are lots of exciting projects taking place in 2022 – all of which I have worked to deliver for our local community. Our local schools are the big winners with new playgrounds coming for Virginia and Nundah State Schools, a tuckshop upgrade at Earnshaw State College, and an extension to the outside-schoolhours facilities at Boondall State School. I am also happy to report there will be major accessibility upgrades of the Banyo Train Station, and I will continue to consult with the community on a proposed expansion of the Northgate station park ‘n’ ride facility, and safety improvements to Sandgate Road. To support our business community, I am excited to announce that I will be hosting the Nudgee Small Business Awards again this year. These awards work to recognise and shine a light on our fabulous and hard-working local businesses, and I encourage you to get involved in this when they launch later in the year. In the meantime, I love getting to local community organisations and sporting club events – please come and say hello if you see me at one of these, or at one of my many mobile office stalls in the suburbs.

As your local Councillor, I continue to focus on the future of the area, how to plan for inevitable change, and aim to deliver a range of projects that will benefit the wider community. Improving road safety in our suburbs has been a long-term objective of mine and I am pleased to advise the commencement of the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Hows Road and Melton Road, Nundah. This new addition will enhance traffic flow and safety for all users. Another project will be the reconfiguration of the roundabout at the intersection of Edinburgh Castle Road and Colac Street, Kedron, which will also enhance safety for residents and visitors. A number of new footpaths will be delivered in 2022 to improve accessibility and safety. Our parks and playgrounds will benefit from improvements in 2022, with new playground equipment to be installed at ARC Hill Park in Virginia and an upgrade to the fitness equipment in Boyd Park, Nundah. Investigations and design work will also commence for a BMX track at Shaw Park in Kedron. If you have any feedback on our upcoming projects or initiatives that will benefit our community, please get in touch.

It took Kristina six school days to paint the mural, which also included taking time to speak to students and answer their questions. Kristina is a textile designer who produces her own original artworks and prints. She looks forward to creating more large-scale murals that are fun and playful. Nundah State School families can view the mural outside the Sounds of Nundah Studios.

What’s happening in 2022 Like everywhere, it has been a challenging start to 2022 for Northside Connect. Staff shortages and an increased risk of spread of infection has meant a delay in starting our weekly groups and activities and very limited face-to-face services. To attend a group at Northside Connect you must be fully vaccinated. From February we will be running program and activities as follows:
English as a Second Language Classes Northside Connect’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes will be held every Monday and Thursday from 10am to 12pm. They will commence for 2022 on Monday, 7 February and Thursday, 10 February. We have classes for all levels of English and there is no need to book. Feel free to come in and talk to our ESL teachers about your English language ability.
Sewing Group Our Sewing Group is held every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm and we recommence in 2022 on Wednesday, 9 February. Each week a group of keen sewers and those who would like to sew better get together and have a very fruitful morning creating lots of different items to wear and for the home. A few things they have made recently for themselves and others have been reusable face masks, Christmas stockings, shopping bags and items of clothing. Members have also made things to donate to those in need, including quilts for women and children in refugees, and cot covers for preemie babies in hospital. If you are interested in joining, we would love to see you. All levels of sewing knowledge welcome with many hands to guide those still learning. Just bring yourself – we have everything you need including sewing machines, material, buttons, zips, cotton etc.
Garden Group Calling all green thumbs! The garden crew are seeking new volunteer members to help maintain the community garden and plants in the carpark area. Roles include watering, weeding, mulching and occasional pruning.
The sewing group is currently looking for donations of the following: • Good quality material • Sewing thread • Needles, pins, scissors, etc

Northside Connect Celebrates 30 Years of Service
Welcome and Congratulations
At the end of 2021, past and present volunteers, staff, Management Committee members, students and community leaders gathered at Northside Connect to celebrate 30 years of service to our local community. This is a significant achievement for a small community-based organisation like ours.
Our Family Law and Principal Solicitor, Yolandi Beer welcomed a beautiful new baby boy to her family over the Christmas break. Yolandi will now be taking six month’s maternity leave and Sunita Collis, an experienced Family Law and Principal Solicitor, will be stepping into the role during this time.
Looking back on the numerous programs, activities, groups and events we have provided over the years reminded us of the contribution we have made. Thank you to all who came along for the trip down memory lane and the very yummy cupcakes.
HOW WE CAME TO BE...
