After a couple of challenging years in education services, the team at Street Science have worked hard to continue to provide schools and the community with access to engaging science education events. Further information is set to be released in the coming months of a new building which will sit proud in the Nundah landscape. The new building will provide residents with new retail offerings, additional visitor parking, and will continue to grow Nundah as a destination. The site currently sits idle with vacant tenancies, so developer Gardner Vaughan Group (GVG) has approached the neighbouring community to offer these tenancies to flood-affected retailers at Toombul Shopping Centre. “Hopefully by assisting a few of these stores, we can provide short term relief to continue trading through these very difficult times,” says Claire O’Hara, Gardner Vaughan Group. Local ANZAC Day Services 2022 As the sun rose on April 25, 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers rowed towards the shores of Gallipoli and into history itself. Every year since, as the sun rises, Australians gather across the nation to remember their legacy, and the legacy of all those who have followed in their footsteps. All members of the community are invited to attend ANZAC Day services on Monday, April 25.

Recovering from the 2022 Brisbane Floods The February 2022 floods were one of the worst Brisbane has experienced, with residents, businesses and infrastructure greatly impacted. The intense rainfall broke riverbanks, covered roads, and sadly, claimed the lives of 13 people in the state. A record-breaking 887 millimetres fell in February - more than double the nearest monthly high in 2020. In three days alone, Brisbane received 80% of its annual rainfall. The Wivenhoe Dam capacity rose from 58.7% on February 24 to 183.0% by February 27. In our local area, a significant number of houses were inundated with water, especially those near

waterways. Businesses and homes were affected, and the local community was shocked to see the extent of damage to Toombul Shopping Centre and its many retailers. Although the car park is notorious for flooding, it was heartbreaking to see the water rise inside the centre, entering most stores and causing extensive damage. When the flood waters subsided, the clean-up commenced. The local community rallied together, with residents helping clean up neighbour’s homes, local businesses, sports-grounds and clubhouses.

Nadia from Active Truth and Councillor Adam Allan

of work boots and PPE to those volunteering in muddy flood waters. Many other businesses donated products and their own time to help with local flood clean-up activities. If you have been affected by the floods, please contact our local representatives for more information on assistance available.

Local businesses came together to help too. Active Truth in Nundah donated $50,000 worth of new clothing and She Wear Australia in Northgate donated $40,000 worth

Council cabs

A recovery package will be available to eligible residents and businesses allowing them to receive a $250 rebate off their next rates bill.

Some Council Cab services have been impacted by recent weather and flooding events. Services to Toombul Shopping Centre are temporarily redirected to Chermside Shopping Centre.

Community facility disaster relief Brisbane City Council assistance with flood recovery

Council will provide a $5,000 payment to community organisations who are operating, or located within, a Council leased or licensed community facility that has been impacted by the recent severe weather event. For more information call 3403 8888.

There’s still so much work to be done, but one thing’s for certain; the spirit of Brisbane has never been stronger. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have provided their support and for everyone’s hard work on the ground. At the time of writing in mid-March, 61,688 tonnes of water-damaged waste had been collected from more than 3,091 flood-affected streets. If you have flood-damaged items or you need assistance with flood aftermath clean-up, you can register for assistance by contacting the Northgate Ward Office. Residents can also access free resource recovery trips to assist with flood waste. We have had 24,314 free visits to the tip for floodaffected waste.

Stacey from She Wear

Flood rates relief

The issuing of the April quarter rates notices will be postponed for one month until late April-early May. Ratepayers impacted by the severe weather and facing financial difficulties will be eligible to receive a 60-day additional due date extension and access to payment plans.

Made with love in Nundah.

Bus services resume Bus service timetables are now back to normal, however, due to Toombul Shopping Centre interchange being non-operational, alternate stops have been provided for the 306 and 322. These bus routes will now stop at Sandgate Road stop 32 until further notice.

Report potholes Our hard-working crews are out across the suburbs responding to reported potholes following the severe weather. We appreciate the efforts of residents in being our eyes on the streets. If you see a dangerous pothole, please report it to Council by texting the location to 0429 234 948.

LEGAL MATTERS with Aaron Ball from Shorestone Legal

HEALTH & FITNESS with Alyssa Easdown from Fitstop Nundah

You don’t always have to go to court

Exercise for sleep deprivation

Many legal matters get settled without expensive court proceedings. These days, in most areas of law that affect families, mediation in one form or another is providing a relatively inexpensive alternative.

As an infant sleep consultant and mum of two kids, I truly understand what it’s like to be sleep deprived. Grogginess, exhaustion, poor concentration and mood changes are all signs of sleep deprivation and can affect people at all stages in life.

In many types of disputes, attempting some type of mediation first is mandatory. In family law disputes, for example, the parties are required to attempt alternative dispute resolution for all parenting issues if it is safe to do so. Property settlement disputes following the breakdown of a marriage or de facto relationship also have mediation pathways available. In disputes over wills and estates, people are usually required to explore mediation before going to a

trial before a judge. Mediation can also provide an affordable pathway for resolving disputes between neighbours, business partners, tenants and lessors, employees and their employers. If you are involved in any type of dispute, and there’s a real possibility it may end up in court, then it is important that you get legal advice early. Shorestone Legal can help you prepare for, and even represent you, at mediation.

When you’re sleep-deprived, exercise might feel like the last thing you want to do – I get it!

bedtime can make it hard to wind down as endorphin levels are high.

However, if you do a short workout, move your body at the gym, or lift some light weights, you’ll release endorphins, improve your mood, and help combat sleep deprivation.

Before bed, try some light stretching or gentle yoga to relax your body and alleviate anxiety.

If you are struggling to fall asleep, consider moving your most active workout to earlier in the day. Exercising 1-2 hours before

Try turning off the screens (yes, including your phone!) 30 minutes before bed too. Regular exercise will lift your mood and will help you get better quality sleep.

Dealing with pain

Should I or shouldn’t I renovate my home?

As physiotherapists, we talk to people about pain every day. Pain is not as simple as it may seem and there are a number of misconceptions about it. Here is the biggest one:

One of the major questions I’m often asked is whether it’s a better time to renovate an existing home OR to sell and buy a renovated/new home.

Pain = damage: NOT TRUE!

lots of different things, such as:

One of the most common beliefs about pain is that it means that something is damaged or broken. Although this can be the case for an acute injury, it is rarely the case when someone has persistent pain.

BIOLOGY - sleep, fatigue, illness

SO what IS pain? Pain is usually our alarm system – it’s there to warn us of a threat to our tissues. Any information that convinces your brain that your body is in danger can contribute to your pain. Your experience of pain is influenced by

PSYCHOLOGY - stress, anxiety, depression SOCIAL FACTORS - your environment, knowledge and prior pain experiences. How can we help? If you have pain with movements, positions or activities, we can help you find ways to modify and become less sensitive to the things that are giving you pain.

More than Great Coffee Fuel & Co is located just outside the hustle and bustle of Nundah Village. Enjoy the fresh, on-trend and seasonal menu, with a glass of wine, beer or cocktail.

A major factor in this decision is the current restrictions on accessing building materials. Given the recent major flooding, we can expect to see a flurry of construction works to repair damaged homes, which will further impact the availability of builders and building materials, and extend renovation timelines. Finding qualified tradespeople is also a concern, with a number of handymen, fencers, electricians, plumbers and painters booked out for the coming months.

If you’re considering a major renovation instead of selling and moving into a completed home, be prepared for much higher build costs and longer building timelines. There’s a strong argument for choosing to make that step up the property ladder by selling and buying a completed home. If you’re in the process of making this decision, I’d be happy to provide some guidance or advice.

This is. A very Nundah Mum (we have all kinds here!)

The Nundah and Districts Historical Society Inc You may recognise ‘zero waste champion’ Marion of Vessel Nundah. Aside from owning 1.5 dimples, you may not know she is a Mum of two kids. Coincidentally drinking from her ‘Best Mum’ mug (a previous year’s Mother’s Day gift), Marion tells me that she never expected that motherhood would be so completely consuming in both great and exhausting ways. When people comment on her kids, she hears that one is funny, and one is polite. She figures she must be doing something right. Marion was home with her kids, her Mum and the two dogs when the recent floods hit Nundah. Her Mum had ‘just cracked a beer’ when

they were alerted by the sight of her wheelie bins floating past the window. All too quickly, the waters rose on the bottom floor of their home – and her business. They evacuated, making it to safety at a friend’s place on higher ground. Weeks later (at time of writing), they are still in limbo, still cleaning and waiting for assessors to view the damage. But, this Mum is resilient and Vessel was quick to get back up and running. This is. series focuses on Nundah locals, interviewed and photographed by local contributor Gaylia Lee. thisismephotography_gaylialee

In 1984, Nundah resident Mr Joe Egan called a public meeting to establish a historical society for the local area. A new building was constructed for the people of Nundah, where the Nundah & Districts Historical Society was incorporated. The Sir William Knox Archives and Resource Centre was opened by the State Member for Nundah, Sir William Knox M.L.A in 1988. Since that time, the Society’s resources have grown to include many photos, cemetery records, maps, paper records, books and equipment to meet the many requests received about the history of the local area.

The Society prepares historical presentations for clubs and organisations. Students at local schools and universities are able to visit the Society for research on projects and assignments. If you are interested in your suburb’s history, you are welcome to visit and discover the fascinating history of our local area. The Society is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning and is located inside the building of the Nundah Library. The local members, who are all volunteers at the not-for-profit Society, are grateful for new acquisitions from the public and monetary donations to assist in the costs in running the organisation.

Sorry Day – Thursday, 26 May Since 1998, the Noonga Reconciliation Group (NRG) has hosted the Sorry Day ceremonies at the Stolen Generations Memorial site in Kalinga Park, Clayfield. This site was chosen because it sits in the vicinity of homes and institutions where Aboriginal children were taken from families between 1897 and 1970.

This year’s ceremony will be held at 10am on Thursday, 26 May at Kalinga Park, Clayfield.

The day is commemorated through the involvement of students, local Indigenous artists, elders and the community. Sorry Day has grown substantially over the years and they expect over 200 people to attend this year.

NRG works with local Elders, schools and the broader community to create opportunities for cultural learning and reconciliation. They regularly organise events and gatherings to increase awareness and understanding of Indigenous cultures and issues.

The ceremony features a keynote speaker from the Stolen Generation with tributes from students on the impact of these policies in today’s world.

NRG meets regularly to advance their programs and collaborate with other like-minded organisations. For more information, contact NRG.

Made with love in Nundah.

Mums, Make Your Health a Priority

We need to remember that our health is important, and so is the example we set for our children. We encourage our kids to eat healthy and play sports but how many of us are really getting optimal nutrition and exercise?

WITH

Becc Pritchard

FROM INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL CULTURE Mums often make sure everyone else is well looked after and put themselves last on the priority list. Having kids makes it easier to use excuses like “I have no time” or “I’m too tired”, but what are we doing to make the situation better, other than running ourselves ragged?

Get Involved and Make a Difference Would you like to be more connected to your local community? There are plenty of local volunteering opportunities available.

Not only does eating nutritiously and exercising consistently help us to feel good and function better, but there is the added benefit of role-modelling healthy habits to our children. Taking care of yourself is not selfish – healthy family habits start with modelling this lifestyle as a parent. If you’re new to exercise, start small. Go for a walk or start stretching each morning. If you’re looking to push yourself a bit further, get in touch for a tailored plan. 16/14 Ashtan Place, Banyo 0427 493 030 Institute of Physical Culture iopc_gym

Flood Relief, How We Can Help

Spotlight on our Domestic Violence and Family Support Program

If you have been affected by the floods, we have the following free ongoing services available.

Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention (DFVP) Month to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated.

• Power to charge phones and other devices • A ssistance with information and referral to other services and supports

Events and activities are held during the month of May, with community groups and the private sector working together to help prevent domestic family violence and support those affected.

• A cup of tea or coffee

The Northside Connect Domestic Violence and Family Support Program includes specialist support services open to members of the community seeking assistance with difficult life circumstances including domestic and/or family violence, sexual violence, relationship and family breakdown.

• Assistance with access to online services and support Northside Connect also has a variety of food relief programs available to the public, including: Pantry Items You can access a variety of pantry food items, such as milk, tea, coffee, tinned food, lunch-box fillers and toiletry items. You don’t have to make an appointment to receive these pantry food items, just drop in and ask about receiving food and the team will pack you a bag. Fruit and Vegetables Fruit, vegetables, meat, and other foods such as bread, snack foods, milk and cheese are available. The food is donated through OzHarvest, so the food available changes each week. This program is run on an appointment basis. An appointment can be made by calling on a Monday to book in a time. Frozen Meals We often have frozen pre-cooked meals that you can take home or ask us to heat up for you. You don’t have to call ahead of time – just ask our team for some frozen meals. St. Vincent de Paul Emergency Relief operates from our Centre twice a week, Monday and Wednesday. To receive this support, you must call St. Vincent at 1800 846 643 and arrange an appointment time with them (no walk-ins). Flood Relief We have additional support services that have been introduced due to the recent floods. This includes grocery gift vouchers which have been donated by individuals and originations. To receive the grocery gift vouchers, you will need to meet specific criteria including proof that you have been affected by the floods.

Counselling Service Our counselling service is open to anyone who is experiencing life stressors that are significantly impacting on them. The program has a focus on domestic violence and is one of only a handful of services in the North Brisbane region offering specialist domestic violence counselling. The counselling is by appointment only. If we are unable to provide you with an appointment, we will refer you to other counselling and support services.

Social Worker (1) Facilitated by a Social Worker, "Journeys" is a free, confidential group program for women who have experienced violence and/or other forms of abuse in their intimate relationships.

Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic The Family Law Solicitor can provide legal advice to women regarding domestic violence and family law matters and referrals to other legal and support services if required. Please note: Men who require assistance on domestic violence and family law matters can access assistance through our generalist legal service. “Journeys” Journeys is a free, confidential group program that runs over a number of weeks, for women who have experienced violence and/or other forms of abuse in their intimate relationships. This group is facilitated by two workers experienced in domestic violence and combines therapeutic and education components. Community Awareness and Education Activities Throughout the year, the Domestic Violence and Family Support Program participates and runs a number of networks, projects and events. These activities aim to raise awareness and better equip the community with information and knowledge about domestic and family violence and other issues that affect the people we work with on a daily basis.

Help Us To Help More

As awareness of domestic and family violence increases, we have seen an increased demand for "Journeys", a program for women that has been offered here at Northside Connect for over the past 20 years.

50%

We have to turn away, on average, 50% of women that contact us wanting to attend...

Women Helped (20) The Social Worker facilitates the Journeys Group with a maximum intake of 20 participants per workshop.

How do we respond to increased demand? Create Our Own Group Facilitator Training Package

By developing our very own training package, we have ensured the long term sustainability of the "Journeys" program. This package allows us to deliver the "Journeys Group Facilitation Training" in a multitude of settings with a wide range of workers.

Social Worker

Group Facilitator Training Participants (10)

Women Helped (200)

How do we continue supporting women affected by Domestic and Family Violence? Deliver more Group Facilitator Training! Increased number of workers able to deliver the Journeys Program means assisting more women affected by domestic violence. Each Facilitator Training Group costs approximately $2,500, which trains 10 workers who can assist 20 women affected by domestic violence. We can transform the life of one woman for just $12.50. If you would like to see more of these free services available we would love you to consider donating to Northside Connect to make this happen.

Series 2 ‘Injustice of Intimacy: Coercive Control’ Podcast

Trivia Fundraiser In keeping with DFVP Month, Northside Connect has organised an event to raise community awareness and vital funds to help sustain Family Support and Domestic Violence Programs offered at the Centre.

The ‘Injustice of Intimacy’ Podcasts were first released in 2019 with 5 episodes aiming to answer the question, “How do we overcome the challenges for women who seek help for Intimate Partner Sexual Violence?”

Everyone in the community is welcome to come along to learn a little more about the programs offered at Northside Connect, all while participating in a fun evening of trivia at Norths Rugby Club on Saturday, 28 May.

Tickets are on sale now at www.trybooking.com

We are excited to announce the release of our second series of podcasts with six episodes focused on Coercive Control. This series brings insight into the key behaviours of coercive control and the ways these may be used to abuse and control within an intimate relationship. In each episode, we speak to both a woman who has experienced coercive control, and experts from a range of fields who share their knowledge of coercive control. The podcasts are a response to the organisation’s work with women who accessed services through the Domestic Violence and Family Support Program and shared their struggles to understand the different types of violence that occurred in their intimate relationship and their frustrations in trying to get the right help. The first series on Intimate Partner Sexual Violence is currently available at the following link or on all major Podcast directories including iTunes and Spotify: www.buzzsprout.com/296531. These podcasts were produced by Northside Connect with funding proudly provided by Legal Aid Queensland’s Community Legal Education Collaboration Fund.

All proceeds go towards programs that make a real difference to women and children affected by domestic abuse and family violence.

Thank you to Norris Motors Norris Motor Group has generously donated funds to help us facilitate two training packages. Our Social Worker will train specialist domestic violence workers, psychologists, and social workers to deliver workshops for women affected by domestic violence. The first of these two training programs begin in the month of May during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
