Demand prompts early launch The latest instalment of Property Solutions’ burgeoning $270 million Circa Nundah Village precinct has been fast tracked thanks to intensified market demand. The $23.5 million VIVIR is already under construction and will deliver 54 one-, two- and threebedroom apartments ranging in price from $377,300 to $730,000 with configurations from 64 to 140m2. Place Projects marketing agent, Bruce Goddard, expects that demand for sub $400,000 apartments to create strong interest in the boutique eight-level building. “Even VIVIR’s one-bedroom apartments will include a secure car park, which is uncommon at this price point,” Bruce says. “Buyers will also be encouraged by the fact they are coming into a growing but established community.
“Nundah’s urban rejuvenation and the opening of new restaurants, cafes and retail outlets in the village has created a thriving lifestyle precinct.” Property Solutions joint managing director, Kevin Miller, said VIVIR would meet demand for a low maintenance but vibrant lifestyle close to the CBD. “Discerning buyers who wouldn’t have looked twice at Nundah 10 years ago now see the area as a cosmopolitan destination to live, work and play,” Kevin says. “Nundah’s gentrification is taking the suburb in the same direction as the trendy South Brisbane and Paddington precincts.” Circa Nundah Village is home to several residential buildings, a modern Woolworths supermarket, 11,000m2 of office space occupied by Energex, along with extensive retail, dining and lifestyle amenities. Property Solutions’ previous projects include Centro on James Street, the $350 million SW1 development in South Brisbane and more recently, The Barracks in Paddington. Find out more about the VIVIR and the Circa Nundah development at circanundah.com.au or visit the display at 1 Aspinall Street, Nundah.

Surfer Shares Love of Woodwork Stuart Bywater’s handiwork can be found in family homes, modern boardrooms of corporate offices and, most weekends, somewhere on the beach. Nundah local Stuart spends his days creating handcrafted furniture and teaches surfboard-making classes in the evenings.
“I’m a keen surfer – when I’m out in the ocean waiting for a wave, it’s a Zen-like moment, and being able to ride a board I’ve made with my own hands really adds to the experience.” Stuart’s passion for handcrafted woodworking has seen him become one of Queensland’s most successful furniture restorers and designers. He recently restored more than 200 pieces of heritage furniture for Brisbane City Hall, and designed a corporate fit-out for Thiess Headquarters in South Brisbane which included a 7.2m conference room table.
“They closed the roads at 4am so they could lift it into the 5th-floor room with a crane,” Stuart says. Stuart also enjoys restoring much-loved pieces and creating custom designs for his clients. “I love seeing the satisfaction in their eyes when they know they’ve got a piece of furniture that will be in the family for generations.” Stuart says his favourite piece of work is his home in Nundah, which he and his wife, Daniele, have been restoring over the last 6 years. “We have an 1880s worker’s cottage and we’ve turned it into a comfortable family home that’s still faithful to its original structure and ambience.” Stuart’s showroom is in Northgate – why not drop in and find out about woodworking or surfboard-making classes? Queenies Makes Way for Kunara Organics
Dream with your eyes open
Queenies Traditional Teahouse has had a recent transformation, and is now bringing award-winning Kunara Marketplace to Nundah Village. Kunara Organic Marketplace began as a roadside fruit stand on the Sunshine Coast and is now Australia’s largest one-stop destination for everything natural and organic.
Many people have an internal running dialogue about possible property ideas and thoughts like – What if I bought this? And can we try that? It can be somewhat unexpected for clients when they talk to an industry professional about what is truly going on in the market place and therefore what is and isn’t realistic. Real estate as an industry is ever evolving with new products, materials and advertising tools entering the market as well as changes to legislation, local town plans and building codes. All it takes is someone who lives and breathes property to keep an ear to the ground and help home owners realize their goals. It’s fantastic to have ideas and dreams but what is involved, what are the costs, should I act today or when is the right time? An agent can keep you up to date with everything real estate and assist in making these goals a reality. They can provide you ideas that work in the real estate world.
Kunara Organic Café in Nundah is now open for breakfast, lunch and coffee, serving up a wide range of healthy dishes, salads and treats that you can also take away. The majority of Kunara’s Organic Café menu is gluten free and includes a good range of vegan options, as well as Fairtrade Organic Montville Coffee made with a variety of milk choices, including popular nut milks, at no extra cost. Next door you’ll find Kunara Organics - the retail outlet for all your health food needs, stocking all of your favourite healthfood brands. A small selection of Queenie’s teas are available from Kunara Organics, with the full range available online at queeniesteahouse.com.au. Fun Fashion Project Turns into Career Self-taught fashion designer Rachel Burke doesn’t back down from a challenge, using her crafty skills to raise money for charity and bring smiles to faces. Although Rachel says she is just your average girl she is the face behind fashion blog ‘I Make. You Wear It.’, is a women’s wear designer for label Perfect Stranger at Universal Store, is a photographer and a costume designer. ‘I Make. You Wear It.’ started off as a creative outlet for Rachel in 2010 but word spread quickly when she set herself the challenge to make a dress every week for twenty weeks to raise money for charity. Rachel said the response was unexpected, reaching her goal of $5,000 for NAPCAN, which encouraged her to go on and complete a ‘dress a day’ challenge for an entire year. Rachel recently did an installation at Toombul Shopping Centre showcasing some of her favourite pieces, including a costume designed for Patience from Brisbane indie rock band ‘The Grates’. Rachel said that ‘I Make. You Wear It’ came from an urge to do something creatively different and to shake up the idea of what she had planned for her life.
“I always try to say yes to creative things because you never know where one thing is going to take you.”
In her spare time Rachel enjoys buying all of the glitter foam and other knick-knacks from the Discount Variety Store in Nundah Village to be used in her creations. Rachel said that she’s made some of the most ridiculous dresses out of this glitter foam, which has been worn to functions at GOMA and resulted in international exposure. “At ‘Uncovering the Brisbane Look’ last year Patience and I wore these glitter foam dresses that ended up on the cover of a UK magazine called Coco Indie,” she said. Rachel describes her style as whimsical and light-hearted, trying not to take anything too seriously. “It’s a little bit adventurous; definitely crafty, expressive and avant-garde – Nundah bargain shop,” she said. “I love making stuff and craft. You can really take everything in your own hands and make something of your own.” This year Rachel is looking forward to designing her bridesmaid’s dresses, focusing on more projects for ‘Fancy Free’ and taking life as it comes with her fiancé and two dachshunds. Local Florist Goes Big...
Elizabeth Denton
When pop diva Katy Perry goes on tour, her rider specifies that she wants her dressing room decorated with pink and white flowers. When Katy visited Brisbane last November on her ‘Prismatic’ tour, the team at Habitat Florist were delighted to help out with a delicate, fragrant arrangement to go in the vase that Katy brings on every tour. November was a busy month for the team, who also created a range of brightly coloured arrangements to decorate the Indian Prime Minister’s plane as part of the G20 Summit. Business owner Elizabeth Denton works with two other florists and says, “We love helping all our clients. We especially love helping brides
design their perfect wedding day – and we love it when our clients give us free creative range!” Elizabeth and the team have been long-term residents in Toombul Shopping Centre, and they’ve seen many trends come and go. “We keep evolving with the times, but we also have plenty of long-term local clients who keep coming back,” she said. “Looking ahead, we expect to see trends towards Scandinavian-chic, including sleek wooden vessels and polished concrete vases with pops of colour.” Habitat Flowers | Toombul Shopping Centre 1015 Sandgate Rd, Nundah | Ph. 3266 4146

The Art of Brewing Beer in the Backstreets Beer enthusiast and brewing extraordinaire Harley Goodacre has created a beer lover’s paradise at All Inn Brewing Co in Banyo which is now crossing borders into Melbourne and Sydney. In 2010, Harley took a trip to Scotland to work alongside Steve of Stewart's Brewing Co, and this inspired him to go 'all in' and open his own brewing company. “I started out as a bottling hand and worked my way up, learning the art of brewing from one of Scotland’s best” All In Brewing Co. brews and stocks full-flavoured ales that are free from any additives or preservatives and is only a ten-minute drive from Nundah. Harley and his staff at the brewery are passionate about ensuring craft beer is accessible to everyone. “I like to think that our brewery bar has an unpretentious, relaxed atmosphere where everyone - children and dogs included - are welcomed,” Harley says. “All Inn is the sort of place you can come to alone and always find someone to have a chat with.
Words by Fiona Heyman
When you work at a brewery, you are going to be creating and tasting a lot of beer, and that is Harley’s favourite part of the job. Each of the five brews available are represented by individual pin-up girls; however, Harley has a soft spot for ‘Betty Porter’ after she recently picked up a silver medal at the Craft Beer Industry association Awards. All Inn Brewing Co. is impres-
sively powered by a solar energy system that improves efficiency and decreases the brewery’s impact on the environment. This year Harley is installing water tanks to conserve rainwater that will be triple-filtered and used in the brewing process. Harley says that the recipe for a great beer is attention to detail, balance and a “ton of hard work.”
You can find All Inn beers at craft beer bars across Brisbane as well as at the brewery at 189 Elliot Road, Banyo. Brewery opening hours are Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 9pm and Sundays 2pm to 7pm. Takeaways are available at the brewery. All Inn Brewing Co. | Ph. 1300 462 739 Facebook.com/allinnbrewingco

Putia Pure Food Pleases the Palate One of Queensland’s leading chefs, Dominique Rizzo, has opened up a kitchen, pantry and cooking school in Nundah’s neighbouring suburb of Banyo. Putia Pure Food Kitchen, School & Pantry is inspired by Dom’s Sicilian heritage and her love of creating healthy food that brings people together. Venture into Putia and you might see Dom working her magic behind the countertop of the open plan kitchen that’s visible from the indoor dining area. Alternatively, take a seat outside under the shade of the flowering Poinciana tree. ‘Putia’ is an old Sicilian word for a local store that sells food, wine and household items, a place where locals catch up on what’s happening in the community. Dominique has had an extensive background in cooking with more than 20 years' experience as a chef and 12 years in Australian television, radio and media. Dom’s cooking embraces Mediterranean flavours that have been enriched through her extensive travel, food tours, cook book, recipes and now Dom’s most recent venture - Putia: Pure Food Kitchen, School & Pantry.
The menu and overall ambiance of Putia is refreshing and inviting. Salads, gourmet breads, savoury tarts and in-house treats are all made fresh daily for dine-in or takeaway. Sip on a fresh juice, cocktail or house-made soda like orange bitters or sweet lemon and chilli. If indulging in some pure, healthy and delicious food garnished with edible flowers from Putia’s garden isn’t enough, you can always sign up to an exclusive range of food and lifestyle cooking classes that run throughout the year at Putia. The extensive schedule of classes is available on Putia’s website. A full breakfast and lunch menu is available Wednesday to Sunday, with dinner served on Friday and Saturday nights. It provides a slice of paradise among the daily grind – a place to relax and forget.
Paula says, “I love my job. It makes me happy to help my customers feel better. The best part is they get to see my happy face after a treatment!” Coming from the ‘land of the smile’, culture and tradition are important to Paula. “As a Thai person, we hold our Royal family in very high regard. I strive to do the same with my customers and my work.” Feel like you need the royal treatment? Why not stop in and see Paula and the team at Thai Royal Orchid Massage? The visit will completely rejuvenate you. Thai Royal Orchid Massage 2/1192 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph. 0417 949 262 Words by Nita Cameron

A Sunday Morning Market Tradition Wake up and smell the fresh local produce at Nundah Farmer’s Market every Sunday! Get in early and wander through the various stallholders of gourmet foods, fashion, art and craft. Sweet or savoury, your breakfast is sorted at the Nundah Farmer’s Market with options such as crepes, pulled pork buns, and avocado on toast.
Nothing is better than a delicious smoothie or an iced tea to cool you down as you walk around the markets. Start the day with caffeine? No problem – try out The Jumping Bean, who also do iced varieties. Shop better for your weekly fruit and vegetables with market-fresh in-season produce every week. The apples are sweet and the peaches are juicy they stay fresh longer and taste so much better. A visit to the Farmers Market could become a Sunday tradition. Head down to Nundah Train Station each week between 6am and 12pm.
