Stamp Duty a Boost REAL ESTATE to Buyer’s Super Funds The Housing Industry Association is pushing for policy reform on onerous stamp duties paid when purchasing a property. The association has highlighted the financial burden that stamp duty has on home buyers, increasing required borrowings and consequently mortgage repayments and household stress.

Nundah Farmers Markets New Season Nundah Farmers Markets have welcomed spring with open arms. Spring fruit and vegetables are in supply, along with new stalls to tease the tastebuds. Hungarian street food has recently arrived at the market, alongside an array of sweet and savoury stalls. Stock up on sweet berries, grapes, watermelon and peaches that are now in season! At the end of November there will be a flourish of lychees and cherries in the countdown to Christmas. After you’ve stocked up on fresh produce, the Nundah Farmers Markets is the perfect place to relax with a freshly squeezed juice or a Jumping Bean coffee and take in the market atmosphere. Pop down and take a look for yourself.

Historically, stamp duty was a charge for the physical stamp impressed on legal documents for the transaction. In a novel move, the group is now also pushing to have the stamp duty invested into a Buyers’ superannuation fund. The use of funds in this way could have the advantage of taking much of the retirement burden off the public purse over the longer term, with many home buyers retiring with potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars more in their retirement pot. It will be interesting to see how much traction this gets!

Award-Winning Agent 10 Years’ Experience

A Fiesta of Fresh Flavours Lawrence Ponnuswamy is no stranger to the hospitality industry, with an impressive history of working in restaurants and travelling to Mexico frequently for the past twentyfour years, learning from the locals. Lawrence is the owner of El Aguila Mexican Restaurant in Nundah, coming from a family of chefs, studying as an apprentice in 1990 and later completing a hospitality management course in the U.S.A. Starting his career at a five star hotel, Lawrence went on to Dubai to work in his first Mexican restaurant before moving to Russia to run Senor Pepe’s for two years. It was when Lawrence joined Miami based cruise company Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines that he was able to visit more countries and experience Mexican first hand. Lawrence said that he fell in love with Mexico; the islands, the way fresh food is celebrated and understandably the chillies, chocolate and tequila. “Mexican is the cuisine I know.” he said. “It’s fun to work in a kitchen where Mexican food is made; everything has to be made a la carte so it’s fresh and healthy.” Lawrence went on to run a Mexican restaurant in the Bermuda Islands for four more years before coming to Australia to run a popular Mexican Restaurant in Brisbane. After extensive travel, Lawrence is happy to be able to share his

passion for Mexican food with the customers of El Aguila. In the near future Lawrence is going to introduce more value meals, Mexican specialties, Latin American beers and cocktails. Come and share in Lawrence’s passion for travel and creating tasty Mexican cuisine at El Aguila. Open Tues – Sun 11:00am – 9:00pm at 1 /1220 Sandgate Rd, Nundah Ph. 07 3256 6223 | www.elaguila.com.au

Hay Fever Season is Upon Us As spring approaches so does hay fever season. Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is part of the “allergic triad of symptoms” that is made up of hay fever, eczema and asthma. All of these conditions are related to an overactivity of the body’s immune system, which reacts to certain substances in the environment known as allergens e.g. pollens, cat dander or dust mites.

“Spring and summer in Queensland is when grass and tree pollens are most abundant and this is when the majority of people suffer from hay fever symptoms.” Common symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and headaches. Airborne pollens can cause irritation when they are inhaled by susceptible people, or they make contact with the surfaces of the eyes or nose. Hay fever is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms. Sometimes tests can be helpful to identify specific allergens either with blood tests or skin-prick testing. Hay fever is very treatable by avoiding allergens, and using antihistimines and corticosteroid nasal sprays. For specific advice, see your GP so that you don’t have to suffer through another hay fever season. Dr. Conor Calder-Potts is a GP at Nundah Doctors Surgery with a special interest in allergies and hay fever, having previously worked at Allergy Medical. At Crystal Journey you’ll find over 150 different crystals in various styles in store, along with a wide range of jewellery and incense. You are encouraged to touch the crystals, as each has a unique power and healing ability to help with each individual’s life journey. The owner, Graham Todd, has been actively involved in the New Age industry for over 17 years and has a good knowledge of the metaphysical and healing properties of crystals and gemstones. Graham said it’s difficult to have a favourite crystal because they each have their own unique beauty and characteristics. “Each time we get another shipment in, we fall in love all over again with the individual rainbows, inclusions, and internal structure of each crystal,” he said. Crystal Journey also has a wide range of Feng Shui figurines and cures to create harmony in the home and workspace. The store also offers readings, workshops and courses covering meditation, spiritual healing, Feng Shui, development, tarot and Reiki. If you’re looking for some great gift ideas, Crystal Journey also sells a wide range of books and CDs. “We endeavour to give a written explanation of the meaningfulness of all products purchased in the shop,” Graham says. Appointments for readings are recommended and bookings for classes are essential. Local Hero an Agent for Community Spirit Mark Roemermann has lived and worked locally in Nundah for the past eighteen years, embracing community living and development of the area. The Clark Brothers Ray White Nundah real estate agent said that he is excited by the new infrastructure around Nundah that has created a ‘Golden Employment Triangle’ for locals. “Nundah is Brisbane’s newest cosmopolitan hot spot with a very bright future for its residents and my family,” said Mark. Mark said that the community events in Nundah were something that he loved to get on board with and has been helping out with the running of Nundah Village Street Festival for the past eight years. This year, as well as being the Town Crier for the fourth year running, Mark – in association with The Clark Brothers Ray White Nundah – sponsored the kids Jumping Castle that was a hit with the children. Although Mark plays a big part in the Nundah Village Street Festival, Christmas in the Village is always the highlight of the year for him and his family. “Each year I get to install the Nundah Village Christmas Tree and my kids keep calling it ‘Daddy’s Christmas tree’. We detour past it at night so they can see the lights,” he said. Along with supporting the Nundah District Development Association (NDDA), the owners of The Clark Brothers Ray White Nundah are extremely community focused with support and sponsorship for charities such as Nundah Community Living Program, Cancer Council and Mummies Wish. “We all work together to support these groups and I take a lead role in sourcing opportunities for the team to become involved with,” said Mark. After having his children attend Toombul Early Childhood Centre, Mark decided to raise money for the not for profit centre run by Uniting Care in Nundah.

“I felt it was appropriate to help the centre by putting some energy into raising some funds through various events they run each year. I also felt it was important to donate some time to help with Working Bee’s to upgrade the playground area.”said Mark. When asked about the future of Nundah, Mark said that he could envision a vibrant and colourful community. “I can see more and more opportunities for our local kids to establish themselves as leaders of our community with strong education facilities and employment,” he said. Beauty Through Brush Strokes Nundah artist Graham Borough invites you to attend his studio opening art show from October 10 – 19. Graham’s inspiration for his upcoming art show is the South Pacific - his abstract representations of the tropics come to life with bold, colourful brush strokes. At the newly renovated Chapel Street gallery, there will be a display of surfboard art and prints from Almora Surf.

Artworks of all sizes will be exhibited with a selection of smaller original oils on canvas that have been created especially for the show. The exhibition will be held over 10 days, with the opening night on October 10 from 4:30pm – 8:30pm. Visit www.graham-borough.com for a sneak peak of the studio and the artwork available. Community Update from Tim Nicholls Member for Clayfield Treasurer & Minister for Trade By all accounts the hotly anticipated Nundah Village Street Festival was a roaring success again this year. While I wasn’t able to join the celebrations this year due to Community Cabinet being held in Rockhampton, I heard some great feedback from locals and stall-holders. I would like to thank the Nundah District Development Association (NDDA) for their organisation of the festival this year. “Members of the NDDA put in countless hours, year after year, and they should be proud of the turnout and positive acknowledgements they received.” I was happy to support the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service by providing a beauty pack to be raffled off. I also raffled a BMX bike at my stall and people attending on the day had free entry for a chance of winning. Whether you spent the day with an extended brunch at ‘Jam’ or were busy setting up before the rush of people, I hope you had an enjoyable day catching up with old friends and family from the community.

Busting the NBN Myths You may already know that the National Broadband Network is coming to town in a major way. With more than 8,000 homes on their way to experiencing super-fast broadband before the end of the year, we wanted to share some things you may not know about the NBN. MYTH: I don’t need the NBN because I only use a home phone and don’t even want the internet. FACT: The copper network that your current home phone runs through will be retired with the roll-out of the NBN. Keeping a home phone in these areas means connecting to the NBN. MYTH: My current copper-based broadband service is fine, so I don’t need to swap over to the NBN. FACT: Once the copper is switched off in an NBN-live area, you’ll need to move to the NBN if you want to retain fixed broadband. MYTH: The NBN won’t be any different to my current internet. FACT: Not only will you be able to download faster than ever before, your connection will be more reliable to help stop drop-outs while you’re streaming your favourite videos or talking to friends and family online. For all the facts on the NBN, visit the experts at Telstra Toombul Shop 075, Toombul Shopping Centre or phone 07 3256 8400.

Home Loans Specially Reserved for You Jim Georgiou, Branch Manager BOQ Nundah, shares his thought on BOQ’s new Spring Home Loan Campaign – “Home Loans Specially reserved for You”. Jim knows that buying your own home is one of the great Australian dreams. Researching the right home loan, however, is not. Poring through financial documents and squinting to read the fine print on your new bank agreement can be the stuff of nightmares. But, choosing the best home loan for you is just as important as choosing the house. Jim’s advice: don’t just look for the best rate - there’s much more to a home loan than the rate!

There are three main kinds of buyers: First home buyers, Owner-Occupiers and Investors.

Left Lane photography Ed

Behind the Lens at ‘The Left Lane’ Heath Missen has been lucky enough to photograph the likes of Elle MacPherson, Sarah Murdoch and Angus Stone - and Batman, right here in Nundah. We spoke with Heath to find out more about the man behind the lens of The Left Lane. When did you discover your love of photography? My fascination with photography began in a dark room in high school. I was completely taken with the hand processing of black and white film and the magic of making photographs. How did you kick start your career? I was fortunate to train as a photojournalist with ‘The Age.’ What’s the highlight of your travels? I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world, but in 2008 I photographed this one elderly gentleman who completely changed my perspective of Brisbane. He was an eccentric and incredibly successful art dealer living in Kangaroo Point. I entered his apartment to take his portrait for the SMH and walked into an incredible football field-sized Aladdin’s cave of European art. What was it like meeting Elle MacPherson? We collaborated minus makeup artists, stylists and art directors - just the two of us on Tallow Beach in Byron Bay. It was truly flattering to have a figure of her status trust me with her image. (I think she has a thing for me too – no, really.)

What inspires you? The challenge of telling stories and capturing moments is a constant inspiration. I believe that photographs become more valuable with time. What does photography mean to you? I see photography as the ultimate communication tool - a vehicle for sharing my perspective of the world and documenting history. Is there something you can’t resist photographing? I can’t resist twilight - the moments between night and day and the subtle light that can transform the ordinary into the spectacular. What’s the story behind the Batman series? Batman was salvaged from a $10 clearance bin. He is one of cinema’s great silhouettes – I thought it would be an interesting assignment to offer him new life in Nundah. Why did you choose Nundah as the backdrop? I call Nundah home. I enjoy working in urban surrounds. Nundah has a great balance of gentrified high-density development and open spaces. The series was an exercise in studying light and creating cinematic images of a 25cm subject in my immediate surrounds. Giving back with Rotary Lloyd MacKay was first invited to join The Rotary Club of Nundah in 1962 at a very young age of 28. Lloyd has enjoyed the opportunity to work in the local community and indirectly serve the international community. Lloyd has made many new friends, within Rotary and has developed many friendships, which has been outstanding. Keith Williams’ spouse asked him in 1976 “What circle of friends do you have?” It made Keith realize, “not many”. He was 31 years old. Today all have increased their friends because of Rotary-locally and further afield. WHAT IS ROTARY? Rotary is an organisation of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary has made a commitment to work with

national and international health organisations with the goal of Polio eradication by the year 2005 — Rotary’s 100th anniversary. The PolioPlus program has seen more than one billion children in developing nations immunised against Polio through PolioPlus grants. Rotarians plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, education, and cultural exchange programs that touch people’s lives in their local community and our world community.

Former Boxing Champ Inspires Community to be Fighting Fit Don’t be intimidated by the rows of boxing bags and the full sized ring at Northside Boxing in Nundah. Jojo and Rebecca Tipace will welcome you into the NSB family whether you’re a beginner or a featherweight champion. Northside Boxing honours Jojo’s coach from New Zealand, the gym where he learnt the ropes, met his wife, went on to win four New Zealand titles and place 15th in the world. Jojo’s wife Rebecca said that if you love your work, you never work a day in your life and believes this true for Jojo and Northside Boxing. Jojo offers both personal training and traditional boxing for all levels of fitness, allowing you to learn how to punch properly without injury, complete with a full body workout.

Although Jojo misses competing, he said his passion was always about the benefits of boxing training rather than being in the ring. “I’ve always enjoyed boxing training and I see it as something that everyone else can do,” Jojo said. “It’s got everything: the strength component, the cardiovascular component, core strength and coordination – great for weight loss and confidence. “At one stage boxing was a dying sport and I think it’s being revived again.” After his last fight in 2001, Jojo opened Northside Boxing with only one pair of focus mitts and two pairs of gloves. Ten years later Jojo and his colleagues are training 40 people a day. “I’m here because I have inspired people to keep coming back,” Jojo said. Northside Boxing has no lock-in contracts and instead offers a ‘pay as you go’ system. There is no need to book for classes, but it is recommended that you bring your own gloves. The 2014 Nundah Cup The inaugural Nundah Cup was held on Sunday August 17th with a fantastic turnout of enthusiastic croquet teams and supporters. With a DJ, flowing champagne, raffles, face painting, coffee and a BBQ all fifteen teams were eager to take out The Nundah Cup, and there was a DJ, fDarryl Finlay from Havig & Jackson Real Estate gave the low down on how the day would run and announced the challenging ‘no running on the field’ rule – then competition was in full swing! A day of light-hearted croquet ended with a showdown between Tom Davis’s ‘MLC Advice’ team and the ‘Hedley Bandits’. The ‘Hedley Bandits’ took the bragging rights as the first Nundah Cup champions. The best-dressed team went to ‘The Mrs Darcys’ and ‘the rusty ball’ went to ‘The Swingers’. However, no team went home empty handed, receiving vouchers from local businesses and sponsors. Darryl is hopeful that The Nundah Cup will become an annual community event that will get bigger and better each year. Who will claim The Cup in 2015? Until then, the Nundah Croquet Centre will be hosting Twilight Fridays from early October through to late November, where you can come along and learn the ropes with some friendly competition.

The 2014 Nundah Village Street Festival was a fantastic day out, drawing record crowds on Sunday September 7. The enthusiastic Nundah State School marching band officially opened the highly anticipated annual community event. There was an impressive display of classic cars in The Royal car park and over on Buckand Road, Panda Pearls held their famous Sidewalk Sale, with the money raised going to Bravehearts. The Nundah Farmers Market was also open on the day. This year’s Festival showcased local commu-

nity groups, associations, schools and our many great local businesses. Popular ‘Peebo and Dagwood the Clowns’ entertained both children and adults alike, accompanied by roaming entertainers and fantasy characters.

There was something for everyone — jumping castles, the Teacup Ride, tasty food vans on Eat Street, and local cafes. Many regard this as the best festival in its fourteen year history.

Community Fuels a Vibrant Arts Scene Suburban Arts Exhibitions - like the Nundah Village Art Show - help community arts to flourish, according to Queensland Arts Minister Ian Walker. Mr Walker, who attended the show with this wife Heather and local MP Tim Nicholls, said Nundah’s exhibition in the Honda workshop was the type of event he relished.

“The Nundah show highlighted how a community can fuel a vibrant local arts scene,” Mr Walker said. “I enjoy attending suburban and regional arts shows whenever possible because they support our grassroots cultural life, the foundation stone of our pledge to deliver the arts for all Queenslanders.” Mr Walker said Carol Lee Becks’ acrylic ‘Riverside Trees’ was a standout entry of the night and an obvious contender for the Morris Motor Group’s grand prize of $3,000. “Tim and I gave awards to a variety of talented artists that night, and the winning entry was a striking landscape,” he said. “It shows the good that can come from a community backing artistic endeavour and rewarding excellence. “Besides all of that, it was a really good night organised by great people and supported by talented artists. “Congratulations Anne Reid and the committee, and I look forward to Nundah Village’s 11th annual art show.” n Walker

Meet Su - The Social Work Student My name is Su and I am a social work student doing my placement at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. I have had the good fortune to have been placed here since July and have found invaluable opportunities engaging with the various programmes and activities the centre offers. The Centre is a hub of rich interactions between members of the local community. It is a place where people gather to seek support, foster friendships and develop connections. The programs that are run here — like the English language classes, the Journey’s support group, computer classes and play groups — are developed to foster people’s sense of belonging and engagement in their local community. It’s abundantly clear that the staff who work at the centre have a genuine commitment to foster people’s desire for self-empowerment and direction in their lives. Indeed, it’s been a privilege to be among a group of people who, with true spirit and care, provide a nucleus for community members to gather and feel supported.

LEGAL SERVICE ADMINISTRATOR I would like to introduce myself as the new Legal Service Administrator here at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service. I am taking over from Arthur Dowdle who has moved on to a research job at the Uni - we wish him all the best. Tracey - a former Legal Service Administrator - has come into work to train me over the last month, and she will still work as a back-up for me at the Centre. Tracey has been an amazing teacher and support to me, so I am very grateful to her. I have been working and volunteering here at the Neighbourhood Centre for over two years now as the Assistant Receptionist, alongside Jancey, who has also been a great teacher. I have loved working alongside the Nundah Neighbourhood team and have been very fortunate to be part of the front reception area, which has meant I have learnt the day-to-day running of the Centre and have also got to know the clients and volunteers that are regulars here at the Centre. I look forward my new role as the Legal Service Administrator and I am also excited about continuing to work alongside the team and clients here at Nundah. I would like to thank all my colleagues at The Neighbourhood Centre for their support and kindness. Please note that the day-time Legal Service is now only operating 4 days per week, Tuesday to Friday. Please call to make an appointment. Jo Money
