As I approach my first Christmas as the local councillor I would have to say that the past 8 months has been very busy. Nundah continues to be a rapidly evolving and vibrant location for residents and business owners. Council has achieved a lot in a relatively short period of time. Key projects in the Nundah area include the Nundah Library upgrade, improvements in a number of parks including Boyd Park, and bikeway upgrades. We also held the annual Movies in the Park. The Nundah Village Parking Review is progressing with results expected in the new year. There were also numerous additional projects delivered in the area, including road resurfacing, kerb and channel upgrades, traffic management projects, and the addition of four locations for our flashing portable speed warning signs. We have a range of exciting projects planned for the new year, including the commencement of the Banyo Northgate Neighbourhood Planning process, more park upgrades and street art programs, in addition to Council normal program of works. We have also had the opportunity to hold over 18 mobile offices across the Northgate Ward, including a regular session at Toombul Shopping Centre. I have attended numerous community events and it is great to have the opportunity to chat with the community about issues big and small. I wish all residents and their families a safe and Merry Christmas.
Remembering Terrie Raine Nundah lost one of our own – Terrie Raine, from Interesting Things Nundah. Terrie opened Interesting Things in September 2010 and locals will miss Terrie’s care, compassion and friendliness, which added to the vibrant texture of Nundah Village. In lieu of flowers, Terrie’s family and friends are asking that a donation be made to her sponsor children in Bali. Terrie was in the process of setting up a not-for-profit charity to assist children in remote villages to attend school. If you would like to support these needy families, donations can be made at Slightly Twisted Espresso at Shop 1, 1180 Sandgate Road, Nundah.

Buckland Auto Celebrating 45 years in Nundah Buckland Auto Service has been operating in Nundah since the late 1930s. After watching his father and uncle run the workshop for 10 years, skilled mechanic Bill Russell, and his wife Marilyn, took over the workshop in 1971. Bill, who attended Nundah State School, has lived in the area his entire life. He met his wife Marilyn on a blind date at the Wicked Witch Pub in Bald Hill in the late 1960s. They married in Nundah soon after – and will soon celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. “We got married at the church just down the road from work,” says Marilyn. “We then settled in the area and raised our two kids, who also attended Nundah State School.” Bill and Marilyn provide old-fashioned service at Buckland Auto Service, and offer full driveway service and mechanical repairs.
“People get surprised when we come out to fill up their tanks,” says Marilyn, “But we enjoy offering this service, especially for our older clients.” While Marilyn looks after the petrol service and pumping tyres, Bill works out the back of the shop on car repairs and servicing. “I prefer working on cars to trucks – no electrical equipment needed! I’ve been lucky to work on a variety of classic cars and even some race cars,” says Bill. Bill and Marilyn have no plans to retire or move out of the area. “We love working close to home and see no reason to retire. The best thing about our job is our clients and we enjoy seeing them every day. We have no plans to finish up anytime soon.” Buckland Auto Service | 77 Buckland Road, Nundah Ph 07 3266 1922

Expert Advice

with Mark Roemermann
What are your choices when servicing your new vehicle? Your car is one of the biggest financial costs you will encounter, so it is important to get accurate advice when having it serviced. Did you know that when you purchase a new vehicle you are not obligated to take it back to the dealer for its service? Under consumer law you have the choice of repairer. Manufacturers are marketing long service intervals with capped price services to make purchasing their vehicle more attractive. This gives the impression that the car needs little maintenance, and while this may get it through the first few years, the small saving on each service can turn into thousands in repairs shortly after the warranty runs out. When you get quotes for your service, make sure you are comparing apples with apples. When you choose an independent workshop, such as Future Auto Northgate, you are choosing to support a local, family-owned business that cares about you and the ongoing reliability of your vehicle. Independent workshops work off word-of-mouth advertising, so it is in their best interest to provide fantastic service. Independent workshops protect your new vehicle warranty and offer personalised service and advice.

Strategically Planned Sales 2016 has been a busy and hectic year for many locals I talk to. However, in real estate terms in Nundah it has been quieter this year for residential sales. With just a month left in the year, the number of sales in Nundah is clearly down from last year’s figures. For the year to date, unit sales sit at 212 vs 410 for last year and for house sales there’s been 67 vs 123. That’s just over 52% on last year for the number of transactions. Median sale prices are down this year compared to last year too. Units: $400,500 vs $430,050; and Houses: $620,000 vs $679,000. Much of the change in the market can be attributed to this year’s elections and general economic uneasiness. People are less willing to transact on property in this sort of economic climate. On top of this, many of the sales in Nundah have been through out of area and discount agencies. This can result in sales being processed like in a factory. Hiring a local agent who understands buyer psychology is highly advantageous but is often traded to cut costs. Talking to your local agent can give you an insight into local sales and help make the best decision for when may be the best time to sell. @realty is proud to be at your service in Nundah and we wish you all the best for a wonderful holiday period. As a Christmas gift to Loving Nundah readers, you can have a free property report via website LocalPropertyValues.com.au. Merry Christmas!

Finding the Fox After roasting for a number of years in both Melbourne and Brisbane, James May felt it was the right time to start his own specialty coffee roaster and espresso bar. “I developed a love of coffee and a determination to source, roast and develop the best coffee products possible,” says James.
FOX Coffee is located in an old commercial printing warehouse in Geebung, which houses both the roasting plant and the espresso bar.
Coastal Vibes Do you ever wish you could create that same relaxed feeling you get when on a coastal holiday? Visitors to my store often refer to the calm ‘feeling’ they experience when they enter, and it is also the same ‘feeling’ that friends comment on when they come to my home. Coincidence? Not at all. Here are few key guides that I use when creating a relaxing space. Start with a neutral wall canvas by choosing milky whites or vanilla tones that work perfectly to create a cool and calming aesthetic. Patterns and textures work particularly well with this style as they add visual interest without the use of strong colours. Styling in textures can be done easily through items such as rugs, cushions, baskets, wall hangings and furniture. When choosing an accent colour for a relaxed coastal style, I love the use of cool colours such as muted shades of greens, blues and my favourite signature colour, navy. Indoor plants are my number one ‘must have’ when styling interiors. Big leafy plants in deep greens (think lush holiday palms) create a stunning contrast against the neutrals and bring the outdoors inside.
“FOX Coffee is an open book – visitors can see the roaster in action, the orders being placed and enjoy a coffee all in one open-plan warehouse,” says James. “We don’t think there is anything else like it in Brisbane.” With ample street parking and located close to walking trails, cycle paths and a dog park, it is easy for visitors to drop in to try the latest brew. In the future, James and the team are looking at new coffee blends and an increase in cold drinks – both from tea and coffee. Find FOX Coffee at 3 Ellison Road, Geebung Ph: 3216 2318 |

What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre
Art Therapy Workshop
Pamper Day On November 30, women from the Family Support Program enjoyed a much deserved pamper day at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre (NNC). This day was organised by Sonny and the members of the Majestic Church as a part of a week of community giving.
The women were all treated to facials, haircuts, manicures and yummy food. The NNC are very grateful to the Majestic Church for organising the event; it was appreciated greatly by the women who attended.
Happy Christmas
from the Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch The Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch President and Managemement Committee would like to thank the community for its support in 2016. Growing attendances at ANZAC Day, the Battle of Milne Bay and Remembrance Day commemoration services are pleasing to see and reflect the community’s recognition and respect for the work done by members of the Australian Defence Force. Funds raised from badge sales help provide the means for us to continue our commitment to provide assistance to our Defence Personnel and their families. We wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to working with you again in 2017.

NUNDAH
On October 26, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre held its first Art Therapy Workshop for women who have experienced domestic violence. The workshop was made possible due to the funds raised from the Community Art Show in May. Sixteen women participated in an art therapy session by Wendy Cumes Rowell, an experienced art teacher. The participants learnt to use different art techniques to create a beautiful and unique piece of art. For some women this was their first experience into using art as therapy and many reported that they found the session extremely helpful in their journey of moving from a life of violence to one of safety.
Nundah Bargain Centre gets a Face-Lift The Zion Bargain Centre in Nundah has undergone a renovation. This quaint little op-shop has been a treasured part of the Nundah community for over 30 years. All money raised through shop sales is donated to the Zion Lutheran Home. In recent years, sales from the shop have funded electric beds and a 16-seater van. The bargain centre is run by volunteers and features a range of second-hand clothing, hand-made items, haberdashery, jewellery, books, toys and homewares.
OPEN TIMES: Monday to Friday 9am – 1.30pm Saturday 9am – 11.30am.

Funding at Risk The Nundah Community Legal Service (NCLS), which has been operating out of the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre for the past 20 years, is facing its biggest crisis yet. Federal cuts to Community Legal Service sector funding will come into effect in July 2017 and the NCLS is at risk of having its funding being reduced or terminated. If this does happen, the organisation will become unviable and will no longer be able to provide assistance to the communities most vulnerable members.
In the last 12 months, NCLS has provided advice to 760 vulnerable clients and information and referral to over 2,700 people.
Spread Cheer this Christmas Nundah Village Shopping Centre has launched a Food Drive to support the Rotary Club of Nundah and the Zillmere Community Centre. Customers are encouraged to buy one extra non-perishable item and place in the donation cage outside Woolworths to support locals in need. “We’re currently making up 30-40 food parcels a week for seniors, refugees, single parents and other needy families and single people,” said Andrina Deslandes, Project Worker at Zillmere Community Centre. “The non-perishable food through the Christmas appeal at Nundah Village Shopping Centre will help many needy families have a brighter Christmas”. “The generosity of our local community at Christmas time is heart warming,” said Dale Hermosilla-Silva, Centre Manager. “We are delighted to be able to assist the Zillmere Community Centre with their Christmas Appeal.” To donate cans and non-perishable items, visit the Food Cage at Nundah Village Shopping before December 21. Merry Christmas!
Each week NCLS turns away nearly 50 people due to a lack of resources and further cuts will increase this number dramatically. The staff, Management Committee, volunteers and our local members have been lobbying hard to reverse this decision. Thank You! As we come to the end of another busy year at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) and Community Legal Service, the staff and Committee would like to say thank you to the individuals and businesses that have supported the Centre over the past 12 months. The Centre has been grateful for the support from the community for the Community Art Show, the Nundah Festival, Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the Community Christmas Party, Food Relief Program and the Family Support Program. Thank you to Ben Tibben and the staff of Loving Nundah who very generously donate two professionally edited pages of the Loving Nundah magazine to the organisation. The NNC would like to extend a thank you to Courtney Norris of the Norris Motor Group. The Centre has been working with the Norris Motor Group for several months now and not only does the partnership assist the NNC financially to provide meals for its weekly community lunch, but has also assisted on a weekly basis by donating milk, biscuits and tableware. Additionally, Norris Motor Group has recently purchased a Westinghouse upright freezer for the Centre, which has allowed the volunteers to cook fresh and healthy meals in bulk. Thank you to the NNC volunteers cooks - Noel, Jenny, Bill, Richard, Lou and John, who create new ideas for healthy lunches and help cook the meals. Without the support of Norris Motor Group and our volunteers, NNC would not be able to fulfill the Centre’s vision to provide a safe, happy place for the most vulnerable members of our community to enjoy a healthy, hearty meal. We would also like to extend a thank you to the volunteers at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service. Volunteers continue to play a very significant role at the Centre and without the commitment of their time, skills and creativity, the many programs offered would not be available.
