Nundah Solar System Observing Night Over 300 people joined astronomy buffs for a night under the stars in Boyd Park, Nundah on Saturday, 21 July. Organised by Chris Cox, local astronomers set up telescopes and shared their knowledge with local residents and families. Visitors were able to view the moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars through an array of telescopes. With a large crowd turnout, organiser Chris Cox is considering more astronomy nights in the future.

Barber and Beers in Clayfield Mr Snippets, a popular full-service barbershop, is launching a brand new local bar in Clayfield. Already well known for its boutique coffee, adding a bar seemed like a natural progression for owner Geordie. “We offer drinks with a hair service, and excited to have Newstead Brewing Ballymore beer on tap at the moment,” says Geordie. “We are also looking forward to getting more involved in the community with trivia nights, open mic nights and a space where locals can hang out.” Mr Snippets has always been a leader in the Brisbane barbershop scene, and pride themselves on offering their clients the best experience.

We met while working in rural Sunny Coast and found we had a lot in common professionally.

Women Supporting Women Brisbane Northside locals Angie and Caitlin have opened a new counselling service in Nundah that focuses on supporting women’s mental health. Angie, a Kedron local, and Caitlin, who hails from Aspley, have opened Harmonious Minds, a safe space for women to feel heard and supported.

A Nundah Psychology practice, KCPSYCH, is breaking down the stigma of mental illness and is encouraging locals to take control of their mental health needs. With one in five people aged 16 – 85 experiencing mental illness (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2007), KCPSYCH founder, Kristie Clarke, says it is important for people to understand that their mental health, and their families mental health, is important for overall health and well-being. “Mental health issues can occur at any age and we encourage early intervention to accessing services,” says Kristie. “The most common mental health issues are anxiety and depression. KCPSYCH services include child and family services, clinical psychology, psychiatry and neuropsychology and disability services (NDIS).”
KCPSYCH has been assisting the community for over 12 years and the team has increased to over 15 practitioners, including a range of allied health service professionals. The Nundah Village Street Festival is back on Sunday, 9 September! Get ready for a jam-packed weekend that will cater to all audiences and ages, with events and activities showcasing the rich and diverse Nundah community.
The Festival, organised by a group of local volunteers, celebrates Nundah’s past, the present, and looks to the future of the much-loved Nundah Village. The Festical was awarded Community Event of the Year at the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards. Festival weekend will kick off on Friday, 7 September with fireworks and a movie under the stars in Boyd Park, Nundah, starting from 4.30pm. Bring a picnic rug, grab a sausage sizzle and join other locals for a screening of Paddington 2, sponsored by Northgate Ward Councillor Adam Allan. The festivities will continue on Saturday, 8 September with the opening of the Festival Art Show at 10am at the Northside Honda Workshop, on the corner of Sandgate Road and Wood Street. The Festival Art Show Soiree will be held that evening at 6.30pm, where the art show winners will be announced. On Sunday, 9 September, the award-winning Nundah Village Street Festival will open at 9am. A number of projects have been secured for the Northgate Ward in the 2018/19 Brisbane City Council Budget.
The Nundah Village Street Festival is being held again this September and to celebrate our annual Fireworks and Movie under the Stars will be held at Boyd Park, Nundah on Friday, September 7. This year, residents and the local community are invited to enjoy Paddington Bear 2 on the big screen. The fun will start at 4.30pm, with a jumping castle, sausage sizzle, fireworks and the screening. Make sure to bring your picnic blanket and cushions. As a result of the Plan Your Brisbane community consultation project, the Brisbane’s Future Blueprint had been developed. One in 5 Brisbane residents interacted with Council to identify 8 principles to help us shape Brisbane’s next chapter:
Two major road projects will be undertaken to reduce congestion and improve safety. At the Hamilton Road and Sandgate Road intersection a second right turn lane heading south and a dedicated left turn from Hamilton Road will be introduced. Works will also commence at Widdop Street, Toombul to include a much needed signalised intersection. Park upgrades will occur at Maggs Street Park, Burnie Brae Park and the lighting will be completed at Boyd Park. Safe school travel improvements will occur at Wavell State School and Wavell State High School. Twenty-three streets are listed for resurfacing and eight for replacement of kerb and channel. Free wi-fi will be installed in Nundah Village.

Homelessness Week Clothing Donations Required

NAIDOC Week
Homelessness is highly prevalent in Australia, with 105,237 people currently without a home. Of these people, 19,838 are from Queensland alone. Currently, 25% of the homeless population are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander decent and 30% are born overseas. People who are homeless are often forced into overcrowded dwellings, or into unsafe environments. Homelessness Week will take place this year from the 6 - 12 August, and will be centred on the idea of Ending Homelessness Together, coordinated by Homelessness Australia.
As part of Homelessness Week, QUT Human Service students, Kirstyn Foote and Reia Somare-Brash will be collecting unwanted clothes and shoes to be donated to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. If you have items that you would like to donate, please leave them at the hanging displays outside the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre at 14 Station Street between the 6 – 9 August. Donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated, as this is one step closer to Ending Homelessness Together.
Because of her, we can! The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre was given the opportunity to attend the northside NAIDOC celebrations on the 12 July as a part of the community fun day at Koobara Aboriginal and Islander Kindergarten Centre in Taigum.
The central theme for this year’s celebration was Because of her, we can!, with celebrations focusing on the essential role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women played and continue to play within all aspects of the community (Australian Government, 2018). The community day consisted of yarning and storytelling by guest speakers, tradition dance, jumping castles, craft activities and a range of information stalls. The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre was able to engage with northside residents and promote the outreach programs offered, such as the legal service, family support and counselling service, playgroup, sewing group, community lunch and the community garden.
Disability Employment Services at Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Group (SANDBAG) are excited to introduce a new Disability Employment Service available at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre (NNC). SANDBAG works with people to identify employment and training goals and provide support and mentoring.
