La Charpente Handcrafted Wood Products When Northgate locals, Ian and Madeline decided to try their hands at woodworking, they had no idea it would turn into a successful side business. After creating their first wooden chopping board, they had a lot of interest from friends, neighbours and the local community.

Recognising the demand for their unique products, Ian and Madeline started La Charpente, specialising in handcrafted wooden homewares. “As we cut everything using only handheld tools, not templates, no two pieces will ever be the same,” says Ian. “Our clients really enjoy having a one-of-a-kind piece that can never be repeated.”

They have expanded from chopping boards to a wide variety of wooden products, including grazing planks, serving paddles, cheese boards, pizza paddles, coffee and dining tables and even candle holders. “We enjoy bringing out the inner beauty in a piece of raw timber,” says Madeline. “Wood products are popular for the natural, warm contrast it brings to someone’s home.” Ian and Madeline enjoy taking custom orders and working with clients to create beautiful pieces for their home or business. EXPERT ADVICE

MECHANICAL with Dudley Leighton Future Auto Northgate

What are your choices when servicing your new vehicle? Your car is one of the biggest financial costs you will incur, so it is important to get accurate advice when having it serviced. Did you know that when you purchase a new vehicle you are not obligated to take it back to the dealer for its service? Under consumer law you have the choice of repairer. Manufacturers are marketing long service intervals with capped price services to make purchasing their vehicle more attractive. This gives the impression that the car needs little maintenance, and while this may get it through the first few years, the small saving on each service can turn into thousands in repairs shortly after the warranty runs out. When you get quotes for your service, make sure you are comparing apples with apples.

When you choose an independent workshop, such as Future Auto Northgate, you are choosing to support a local, familyowned business that cares about you and the ongoing reliability of your vehicle.

EXPERT ADVICE

PROPERTY with Andrew Emms and Mark Roemermann from @realty

Is it time to downsize? Or do you prefer ‘lifestyle reconfiguration’ or even ‘right-sizing’? Whatever term you use there are often key reasons why you’ll take steps to simplify the way you live. Have the kids left home? Is maintaining your current place more of a chore than you want? Do you find the financial benefits of downsizing appealing? Will the downsizing adventure assist with your overall wellbeing? Consider some benefits. You might want: • time to relax, hang-out with friends, re-energise or travel; • to reduce stress with a lower maintenance home; • a convenient location close to local dining, shopping and lifestyle precincts; • to minimise the costs of running a larger family home; • to take advantage of the government’s financial incentives to downsize ... if eligible, you can make a downsizer superannuation contribution up to a maximum of $300,000 (each) - conditions apply.

Independent workshops work off word-of-mouth advertising, so it is in their best interest to provide fantastic service. Independent workshops protect your new vehicle warranty and offer personalised service and advice.

Our local area offers a wide range of quality properties well suited for downsizers. Options include low-maintenance homes, villas, townhouses or apartments. There’s even superb retirement living communities with wonderful amenities and services. We can show you a variety of opportunities. Contact us for more information on downsizing options.

Keeping Our Suburbs Clean, Green and Sustainable There is a lot happening in the Northgate Ward around litter reduction, composting, recycling, and waste management.

‘104 or More’ Litter Program

Community Composting Station

Household Recycling Guide

The ‘104 or more’ litter program encourages locals to join Council in creating a clean, green Brisbane by collecting two pieces of litter, 52 weeks a year, in locals parks and open spaces. The Northgate Ward team and the Council’s Litter Prevention team have hosted pop-up community clean-up events across the Northgate Ward, with recent events held at the Kedron Brook Bikeway and Nundah Village. ‘104 or more’ collection bags were distributed at the events to help promote a positive litter message to the community. There are plans for more community initiatives such as these in key areas across the ward. For the latest location updates, follow /Councillor.Allan. The best part is that these requests and new ideas for collaboration are community driven.

Northgate Ward has a Community Composting Hub at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Community Garden, located at 14 Station Street, Nundah. This Council Clean and Green community initiative helps minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill, by composting kitchen scraps and helping the local community garden grow fruits and vegetables. You can register to pick up a complimentary kitchen composting caddy to collect your kitchen scraps, from the Northgate Ward Office or the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, and help our community gardens thrive. This is a great collective effort that brings members of the community together, and helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

There is still so much that the community can do to minimise waste going into landfill. Brisbane City Council has a great record with respect to recycling but more can be done. To help local residents learn more about household recycling, the Northgate Ward team has produced fridge magnets with information about what can and can’t be recycled. If you would like one of the these magnets, email your name and postal address to northgate.ward@ bcc.qld.gov.au.

Clayfield Markets Fresh For over 35 years, Clayfield Markets Fresh has been supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to Brisbane’s Northside. Since opening in the early 1980s, Clayfield Markets Fresh has grown to incorporate a delicatessen and over 2,000 lines of gourmet food items, including yoghurt, nuts, fresh bread, fresh flowers, frozen products, gourmet meats and cheeses and groceries. Carlo and Susan have been running Clayfield Markets Fresh for more than 27 years and have noticed how locals are taking a keen interest in their own health and well-being, with the shop providing a large variety of organic and gluten-free options. “We have always looked at improving and keeping up with the trends in the industry so we can offer our customers the best of what’s available,” says Carlo. “One of the biggest changes in the fruit and vegetable industry is that every type of fresh food is now readily available 12 months of the year.”

Carlo and Susan are heavily involved in supporting local charities, schools and clubs, including the annual Brisbane Markets Mango Charity Auction. “We are really proud of our fund raising efforts at Clayfield Markets Fresh. The store has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars towards the annual Mango Auction and other local events,” says Carlo. The store has been crowned Mango King seven times over the past eleven years. “We feel that our shop belongs to the community and all this couldn’t be done without the support of our loyal customers and dedicated, experienced staff who always want to help our customers with their shopping experience.” Clayfield Markets Fresh is open 7 days a week from 6am to 7pm. VEND Market Place An Artisan Treasure Trove

The Joint Opens Second Location in Northgate The Joint Physiotherapy and Allied Health is excited to open its second location in Northgate. The new clinic is expected to open at the end of October, but clients can book in and see the team while they operate out of the Doctors at Northgate clinic at 1/62 Crockford St, Northgate.

The new clinic will be situated next door to Doctors at Northgate and close to popular local café, Kitchen 8. The clinic has convenient parking on site for clients.

Amy Hinschen dreamed of creating a platform for local designers and creatives to have the benefits of their own store, without the huge financial overheads. After seeing permanent markets set up in New York, Amy decided to bring the concept to Brisbane, and VEND Market Place in Virginia was created. VEND is a permanent indoor market location for local designers and artists to showcase their items without having to be present full-time. VEND Sales Assistants are on hand to assist shoppers with questions and purchases. “We have had amazing feedback from the community, customers and our vendors,” says Amy. “Our customers are complimenting us on the concept and the vibe at VEND as being fun, inviting and with great coffee. Visitors love the fact that when they shop at VEND they are supporting one of our 80+ local shop owners.” VEND is open 7 days a week from 9am – 5pm with a café located inside. Fresh food markets, food trucks, kids activities and live music are planned for weekends. VEND Market Place | 1768 Sandgate Road, Virginia www.vendmarketplace.com.au | /vendmarketplace

Services at the new clinic will initially include Physiotherapy, Clinical Pilates and small-group exercise classes. The Northgate clinic is ideally situated to service the fast-growing and expanding industries in the surrounding suburbs, with a focus on providing pre-employment screening, functional capacity evaluations and workplace injury management and prevention. The team at The Joint look forward to working with local businesses and meeting the Northgate/ Banyo locals. Toombul Croquet Club Celebrates 90 Years in Nundah

In the Fold – Inclusive Workplace Makes for Good Business

A love of croquet and the dedication of countless volunteers have seen the Toombul Croquet Club celebrate its 90th birthday in Nundah. The Club was founded by a group of six local ladies in 1928. After searching for a suitable site for the Club, Nundah Park (now Oxenham Park) was selected. The clubhouse, which had previously been used as a school from the 1890s, was purchased for £30 and moved to its present location in 1929. Membership steadily grew; however, during the war years membership fell to a low of 13 members. Soon after peace was declared, club members were advertised at the Nundah Picture Theatre, which was successful in growing membership. The Club has seen many improvements over the last nine decades, including increasing the lawns from two to four, the introduction of water management systems, and regular maintenance and repairs. The club has been a regular venue for Queensland and Australian titles and the volunteers and members look forward to the future of the club, with more sporting events and social functions planned.

When a small laundry was opened in Wooloowin 130 years ago, its founders probably never imagined that it would grow into the innovative, vibrant and inclusive workplace it is today. Holy Cross Laundry, located in Banyo, is the longest serving commercial laundry operating in Australia. Founded in 1889 by the Sisters of Mercy, Holy Cross’ mission is to support the disadvantaged by providing integrated and inclusive employment opportunities. Holy Cross employs more than 340 people and processes more than 6,000 tonnes of linen each year at their facility on Brisbane’s northside. The team provides fresh linen for 700,000 hospital patients, 3,000 senior living residents and surgical scrubs to more than 15,000 healthcare workers each year.

Nature Play Gives Students a Taste for the Outdoors Local Hendra school, Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC), has created a Nature Play space for students to encourage a love of outdoors, an understanding of sustainability, and to have fun in the mud. The Nature Play space, which includes a garden for flowers, a digging pit and a grub club (where students can grow food), is a space for all children to get involved and try new activities. Margaret Tomov, Principal at OLHC, says the students love the natural feel of the gardens.

“The students engage in a range of collaborative and social games, being outdoors and energetic, rather than inside on screens,” says Margaret.

NUNDAH

“Recently, one year level dug a pit to create Kedron Brook and described how people prepare for floods. They sure got muddy and dirty that day!” The Nature Play space is just one aspect of the school’s sustainability plans, with students also involved in composting and recycling, and the school using solar panels to supplement the electricity and bore water to irrigate the lawns and gardens. The school hopes to increase the Nature Play space activities, with the school looking to introduce a hive of native bees. St Margaret’s Recognised as a Leader in Innovation St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, on Brisbane’s northside, has been named as one of Australia’s leading innovative schools by The Educator Australia, for its Academic Advising Program. Twice a week, students from Years 9 to 12 are engaged in small group sessions with a teacher, their dedicated academic advisor, who assists them to set goals based on their results and class teacher feedback, guiding them to self-manage their learning.

The key to the program’s success is in using data to provide feedback about students’ progress to drive their learning. Equally, its success lies in the consistent interrogation of that data and supporting students to effectively implement the feedback, so it can lead to enhanced learning and improved results. The innovative program facilitates a more purposeful approach to academic care. It’s one of the many ways St Margaret’s personalises its approach to each student’s learning. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

Nundah Village Street Festival Success Each year, the committee at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre plans a unique and different way to showcase the Centre at the annual Nundah Village Street Festival. This year, the focus was on promoting the services available at the Centre, the vibrant Platform 14 space, and to showcase their support for the war on waste. This is how ‘Bubbles & Brands’ came to life, with a pre-loved pop-up clothing store, complete with champagne. The champagne was sourced, and generous donations of clothing, shoes and accessories came from locals, businesses and community members.

On the day of the Festival, there was huge interest in the pre-loved clothing, and also in the Platform 14, which is available for hire to the community.

Along with ‘Bubbles & Brands’, the Centre provided their usual child-friendly space, including an inflatable slide, rock-climbing wall, face-painting and activity area, funded through the Child Protection Week grant. It was great to see the younger generation enjoying all that is on offer at the Nundah Village Street Festival. The Nundah Now Committee went to great lengths to ensure the Nundah Village Street Festival was a huge success. Thanks go to the volunteer committee for allowing us to showcase the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre while raising funds that go directly back into providing services and support to the Nundah and surrounding community. The Centre would also like to thank the many supporters, including MP Leanne Linard, MP Wayne Swan, Councillor Adam Allan, Bunnings and Synergy Construction.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre was proud to be a part of the Northside Sexual Assault Action Network’s (NSAAN) Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) launch, held on the 4 October.

With the action network aiming to address gaps in sexual assault services on the Northside of Brisbane, NSAAN facilitated a campaign to uphold the clear message that sexual violence will not be tolerated in our local community. Through networking and organisational input, NSAAN printed wheelie bin and car bumper stickers trending the hashtag #NEVEROK. These stickers have been handed to Northside service centres to be distributed to community members to join the campaign to stop sexual violence and harassment in our communities. The centre was fortunate to hear from guest speaker Julie Sarkozi a solicitor who is a part of Counselling Notes Protect Service. This service provides advice, assistance and representation under new Queensland Law and protects counselling records from being used in some courts. NSAAN would like to thank MP Leanne Linard for donating funds towards the wheelie bin and bumper stickers and Councillor Adam Allan for donating funds towards the bumper stickers. If you would like a sticker for your bin or bumper sticker for your car, please contact the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre.
