Aether Brewing HQ Set to Open The wait is almost over - Aether Brewing HQ is set to open in Northgate in late October. Aether Brewing started its first operations, a bar and brewery, in Milton in 2016 by owners Dave Ward and Jimmy Young. Plans to expand were always on the horizon, but these plans were put into effect quickly after experiencing overwhelming demand for their range of beers. The decision was made to look for a larger location for their main brewing operations and a Northgate location, close to the railway line, was selected. The new Northgate location allows Dave and the team to create more consistency among the core range of beers, while making sure there is sufficient capacity to continue being creative and produce new and exciting beers regularly.

Brewing operations commenced in February this year and Dave and the team are now excited to open Aether Brewing HQ to the public – a taproom with seating and space for 80 people, and 10 taps. Locals can expect Aether’s core range on tap, as well as their seasonal brews, which they are famous for. “We’ve probably made about 70 different beers, with 50 released into the market,” says Dave. “Our most recent release is our Mango Sticky Rice IPA, where we used 400+ kgs of mango and 150kgs of coconut.” With the canning line located inside the brewing operations, Dave says they will offer the

freshest beer in Brisbane. “Our packaging will be done on Friday morning, so when people come in on a Friday afternoon they can grab a beer that has come straight off the canning line,” says Dave. The taproom will operate Friday 3pm to 7pm and Sat/Sun 12pm to 7pm, with rotating food trucks planned. “I hope the locals enjoy exactly what I am looking forward to, which is engaging with people. I know that people smell us when we brew, see us when they drive past, but I can’t wait for them to know who we are and to share the rewards of our passion for good beer,” says Dave. EXPERT ADVICE

 HEALTH

BUSINESS

with Rob Teasdale from The Joint Nundah

with Mitchell Brooks from DFK Hirn Newey

Do you suffer from dizziness? Do you suffer from dizziness, balance problems or vertigo? These symptoms can be caused by a number of things, but commonly are due to a vestibular (inner ear) issue, and can be very debilitating. The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements. If the system is damaged by disease, aging, or injury, vestibular disorders can result. Did you know that a specially trained vestibular Physiotherapist can help with the following symptoms? • Dizziness

• D ecreased balance or confidence with mobility

• Headaches

• Vision and hearing disturbances

• Nausea

• Falls and falls-related injuries

• Vertigo (room spinning)/BPPV

Treatment may be quite simple and is mostly very effective. It can include anything from specific techniques (e.g. Hallpike Dix) for dealing with vertigo through visual and balance exercises to help with other symptoms. The focus is on improving the function and co-ordination of the vestibular system.

Nundah’s Livability

Teamwork: The Key to Fitness Success

Thank you to everyone who dropped by to say g’day at this year’s Nundah Festival. It’s our ongoing privilege to work alongside other dedicated locals and organisations to help make Nundah’s day of days a success. A warm gusty day ensured plenty of fun. The sights and sounds of stalls, school choirs, bands, street performers and more set the scene. Delectable aromas and flavours from the “Eat Street Food Fair” satisfied many appetites.

We all know that to stay fit and healthy we need to exercise. So why is so much of our population still overweight? That is easy to answer because most of us don’t exercise enough, as we are too busy or just too lazy. It can seem hard to get up early to train or organise our lives to fit in exercise, especially if we are trying to do it alone. This is why training in a team environment can really set you up for fitness success.

Our community spirit is wonderfully showcased thanks to the volunteers of Nundah Now and their supporters. Across three days we had movies and fireworks in the park, an Art Show and the Street Festival. It’s easy to see why Nundah is such a popular place to live and do business when we have events like this. Festivals, farmers markets, a feeling of community and evolving infrastructure all add to a suburbs liveability. Promoting Nundah’s liveability is a big key to assisting locals achieve market leading results when selling. Training in a team will not only help push you further than you might push yourself, but can also hold you accountable, as well as feeling a sense of mateship. Plus, training in a team can be much more fun! As the official team fitness trainer at Red Bull Holden Racing, I see first-hand how a professional sporting team at the top of their sport operates. They are always helping each other in the workshop, at the track and in the gym. Is it time you joined a team?

Quality Early Education in Nundah

Kedron parkrun

Nundah will soon welcome its newest early learning facility, with Habitat Early Learning Nundah due to open on 6 January, 2020. Habitat Nundah will establish a new expectation for early childhood education, providing premium care for children between 0-6 years of age. Families that choose to attend Habitat Nundah will have access to the remarkable building and amenities, which include secure basement carpark, a Parent Retreat, medical facilities and much more.

Interested in running but not sure where to start? parkrun is a free, weekly, 5km timed run held across various locations – including Kedron. Kedon parkrun, which started in April 2016, is run by local volunteers every Satuday morning where locals and visitors can run, jog, skip, take their dog, push their pram or just walk. Event Director, Sam Gowty, and Run Directors, Francis, Lenore, Joel and Jess encourage those who haven’t tried parkrun to try it this spring. “We keep it simple, fun and welcoming each Saturday,” says Sam. “We feel this approach provides a solid platform for people to interact with each other and achieve their personal goals in order to lead a healthier lifestyle.”

As the daily curriculum unfolds, children will participate in a range of experiences, planned by highly qualified teachers and early educators, and overseen by an experienced management team. Children will also partake in extra curricula programs, all of which are included in the daily fee structure. Throughout the day children will be treated to nutritious, chef-prepared meals and parents can track their child’s day and longer-term development using the custom-built parent portal. Habitat Nundah will have 8 classrooms catering for 129 children per day, with both emergent curriculum and Montessori programs available. For enrolment enquiries call 1300 301 521. Ben and William’s Wish to Walk Three-year-old identical twins from Virginia, Ben and William, had a challenging start to life. Born 11 weeks premature and weighing just over 1kg each, they spent the first two months of their lives in Intensive Care. Soon after, it was evident that they were not reaching their milestones and at 8 months old, they were diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy. With 2 older siblings, their mum is now their full-time carer. The boys have undergone countless hours of therapy in the hope of providing them with the best chance at a wonderful life. Their dream is to walk independently.

This dream has the potential to become reality. Recently, Ben and William were accepted for a surgery that would improve the boys balance, comfort and most importantly – give the boys the chance to walk. The community has rallied behind Ben and William and are helping to raise funds for this life-changing surgery. If you’d like to help this local Virginia family, you are invited to take part in upcoming fundraising events. Follow their journey online /Ben & William’s Wish to Walk or call directly on 0402 307 489.

The Nundah Festival

JOURNEYS: A Group For Women A free, confidential eight-week group program for women who have experienced violence and/or other forms of abuse in their intimate relationships. This group will be facilitated by two domestic violence support workers and will combine therapeutic and educational components. The group will address issues such as: • the impact of violence and abuse on women and children • safety for both women and children • personal strengths and resourcefulness The group will encourage women to: • look after their physical and emotional well-being • explore their thoughts and feelings • rebuild their confidence and self-esteem • build positive and supportive relationships with others • gain information that will allow them to make informed choices and regain control over their lives Starting in October 2019 - For more information and/or to register contact the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre on 3260 6820 (child-minding will be provided if requested in advance).

The 2019 Nundah Festival rolled around very quickly this year and the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre had no hesitation in re-introducing the Bubbles and Brands pre-loved pop-up clothing store that was run so profitably and successfully the year before. With the help of Loving Nundah and the continuous advertising for clothing donations done throughout the year, the Bubbles and Brands store had no shortage of fashionable items for sale. The crowds came early and many took home a bargain, with clothing starting from $2 and no items costing more than $5. Not only was the crowd taking advantage of the clothing stall, but also the child-friendly space behind the Centre.

Overall a profit of $1,600 was made from the sale of clothing, and 100% of these funds will go directly back into providing services and support to Nundah and its surrounding communities. The carpark of the Centre was also abuzz with attendees of the Festival able to enjoy a number of stalls and activities. These included our Child Protection Week stall with the Shine a Light for Children Lantern decorating activity aimed at raising awareness of how Child Protection is everybody’s Business. We also had the Sewing Group, composting stall, raffles, face painting and, of course, the giant slide, which is always popular with the kids. Boomerang Bags also held a stall showcasing their wares and had a free Water Refill Station for everyone to take advantage of. Thank you to everyone who supported our contribution to the festival including Leanne Linard, Member for Nudgee, Cr Adam Allan, Synergy and QLD Child Protection Week Grants. It is always a pleasure working with The Nundah Now Festival Committee during the Nundah Festival, as it allows us to showcase the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and all the activities we have on offer for the community, in particular our beautiful Laneway at Platform 14 which is available for hire for private functions.

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre recognises that many in our community have a multitude of problems and challenges and some of these translate into legal problems. In this context our associated program, the Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS), focuses on early intervention and prevention. Information and knowledge of the legal process assists people to make better decisions and often prevents problems before they become real difficulties.

The BNCLS is available to undertake community legal education talks. We focus on groups in our local area, especially the young and seniors with whom we undertake interactive discussion.

What Were You Wearing? Northside Sexual Assault Action Network (NSAAN) invites you to ‘What Were You Wearing?’, An Art Installation created by sexual violence survivors and works to challenge myths and raise awareness during Sexual Violence Awareness Month. Inspired by Dr. Mary Simmerling’s poem, ‘What I Was Wearing’, and originally created by Jen Brockman and Dr Mary Wyandt-Hiebert, this impactful installation depicts the clothing worn by women when they were sexually assaulted, with their words expressing the impact.

It is always a pleasure to engage with our community and it is touching when that is acknowledged.

Opening Night: 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday, 10 October

If you would like us to talk to your group, please contact us on 3260 6820.

Entry: Adults $20 and Students $10 (food and refreshments provided)
