Local Profile
Moving into the Village Samara Barlow is no stranger to Nundah - she’s lived locally for the last 10 years before moving into Circa One recently. And now, she’s getting to know the locals even more, through Studio Pilates, which she recently co-opened. Samara bought her apartment off the plan two years before Circa One was finished, and she is really happy with the results. “I face north over the community centre and I have a lovely view, especially in winter when the sunsets are amazing,” Samara said. “During the day my apartment gets a lot of sun, so everyone wants to come over and sit on the balcony!”
Samara decided to settle in Nundah - she liked the community feel, and says it suits her lifestyle perfectly. “I’m at the farmers markets every Sunday to do my fruit and vege shopping.” “There is such a great selection of restaurants, cafes and boutiques, and with Woolworths right there, you don’t even need a car,” “When I saw some of the shops that were going in and heard rumours of Coco Bliss, I thought ‘this is turning into a bit of a health hub’.” Samara says that it’s great to see Nundah ‘take off’ and she loves being one of the locals in on the action.

Café Transforms At Night Simply Duo is a hidden gem situated on the main street of Nundah Village that keeps drawing locals back for breakfast, lunch and, discreetly, dinner. Thanh Dam took over Simply Duo six years ago after unintentionally coming across the café for sale online. “We loved the shop because it had such a homey feeling,” Mrs Dam said. Simply Duo was refurbished last year, but the black and white photos of Vietnam are there to stay.
Every Wednesday to Saturday night, Simply Duo transforms into a French-Vietnamese restaurant that Urban List once claimed is ‘the northside’s best-kept secret’. The French-Vietnamese cuisine is influenced by Thanh’s northern Vietnam background. Thanh says that the food in northern Vietnam is more salty and sour in comparison to the sweet and spicy Chinese influence of the south. Get started with refreshing rice-paper rolls and green papaya salad, but save room for dessert. There’s black rice pudding for the coconut fans, or a ginger-infused creme caramel. Weekend bookings are recommended. To make dinner reservations at Simply Duo, call 3266 2422 or head to 1269 Sandgate Road, Nundah.

Equal Rates for Property Investors
REAL ESTATE
Did you know that Brisbane City Council and many other Queensland Councils are charging investors more for rates than owner occupiers? When challenged, Brisbane City Council said income-producing properties also have the advantage of being able to offset these expenses against taxation. So what? Remember that investors get tax deductions at different rates of tax. But think about what this really means! Property investors buy property in an area because they consider it a good investment and when a lot of investors buy properties at the same, time it actually increases the value of the properties they’re buying and the value of properties in the area. Don’t forget that Council’s charge rates on the rateable value of a property… So Property Investors are getting penalised for investing in council’s area, providing rental properties for councils constituents and contributing to the overall value and the rates pool! To find out more, log on to www.youtube.com/clintdevereauxteam and watch this video on ‘Equal Rates for Property Investors’ or call me for a chat.

Instinctive exercise releases inner animal Walk into Stage 6 Health & Fitness in Nundah and you instantly feel your natural instincts kick into gear. It’s very tempting to start swinging around on the climbing frame, much to the delight of owner and trainer Matthew Rutley, encourages your curiosity. Matt Rutley and his partner, Amelia Coomer, have created a space designed to encourage natural and instinctive exercise in a welcoming environment that Matt describes as a ‘playground’.
Stage 6 Health & Fitness offers not only CrossFit, boot camp and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but in an Australia first - MovNat, in which Matt is a certified level 2 trainer. Matt says that MovNat links back to the caveman days and has seen the toughest of men struggle with this form of exercise that focuses on strength and mobility. “Go back a thousand years and lifting, running, jumping, carrying and crawling was a form of survival,” Matt said. “As modern humans we have the luxury of not having to do this, but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t; because that’s exactly what our bodies were designed to do.”
As for those chiseled abs, Matt says that it’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling good and respecting your body. “Everybody’s body is built for something different”. “When you see what your body is capable of, it starts to permeate other areas of your life and that’s when it’s more than fitness, it’s about health.” “I’ve seen the change happen in people when they say ‘I can’t do that’, and when they do it, they get this great sense of pride.” Matt has added personal touches to Stage 6 Health & Fitness - he created the graffiti wall art, and has added a gas stove for post-workout Greek coffee. Upstairs Amelia offers remedial massage, out the front, they’re growing a community garden with herbs and tomatoes. Stage 6 Health & Fitness offers a 7-day obligation-free trial to attend as many classes as you want. If you manage to complete more than twenty classes, Matt will give you a medal and a hug. Stage 6 Health & Fitness is located at 9 Nundah Street, Nundah. Open Mon – Fri 6am - 8:30pm & Saturday 7:30am – 12pm. Visit naturalfitnessbrisbane.com.au for more information. Ph 3162 5022

Owner of Panda Pearls and ‘fascinating character’, Amanda Stein, has featured in an Archibald prize entry by artist, Katrina Goldsworthy. Katrina said that the 6’ x 4’ canvas titled ‘pandamonium’ was about creating a world of intrigue and fantasy, illustrating her feelings in a semi-naïve world. The canvas that started to take shape in October last year portrays Panda Pearls as an ‘Aladdin’s cave’, perfectly showcasing many of the treasures on offer.

Yellow Brick Road Nundah launches ‘Ask My Advice’ Day Yellow Brick Road Nundah has announced the launch of ‘Ask My Advice’ Day, a community based event that encourages local residents to reach out to qualified finance professionals and ask them the home loan, superannuation, and insurance questions that they’ve always wanted to ask, at no cost. Yellow Brick Road Nundah has announced that its ‘Ask My Advice’ Day will be held on Saturday 16th August 2014 at their branch, located at Shop 6, 1176 Sandgate Road, Nundah. “We decided to hold our ‘Ask My Advice’ Day here in Nundah because we strongly believe that all Australians deserve to have access to quality financial advice. We especially want our community to understand how they can achieve their financial dreams, in simple to understand terms - we cut out the industry jargon,” says Yellow Brick Road Nundah’s Branch Principal, Casey. Research compiled from Australian consumers aged 30-49 in major cities
Nundah
across Australia, found that nearly 49% of individuals claimed they didn’t speak to a professional about their financial affairs because they found it to be too complex and they didn’t have the confidence to have a conversation about their finances. “The finance industry is very good at using confusion to their advantage. We want to cut through the confusion and start a simple conversation to help our community fully understand their financial situation, which is why this day is so important to us,” says Casey. Residents who have questions can register their interest for a free appointment at the Yellow Brick Road ‘Ask My Advice’ Day online registration page ybr.com.au/ promotions/amad. For more information contact Casey Jarrett via casey.jarrett@ybr.com.au or call (07) 3172 5091.
Here is your chance to ask your local Yellow Brick Road adviser the questions that matter most to you, such as: • How can I save a few hundred dollars per month? • Is now a good time to fix my home loan rate? • How can I reduce my credit card debt? • What should I do with my tax return? • Am I doing everything I can to save for my retirement? • Do I have a plan in case something unexpected happens to me or my family? Limited spaces are available so book your appointment today.

Triple celebration for Nundah Kindy’s 50th birthday ‘Once a Nundah kindy kid, always a Nundah kindy kid’ is the saying at 50-year-old C&K Nundah Community Kindergarten. This is certainly true for C&K Nundah’s Assistant Teacher Peta Wright. Peta attended the kindergarten in 1989 and was taught by current Director Roz Davies in her first year as teacher at the kindergarten. It’s stories like these and more that make Nundah’s 50th birthday celebrations so exciting. Peta said it’s pretty special to work alongside your former kindergarten teacher. “I vowed that I would be ‘just like Roz’ when I grew up, and here I am teaching alongside her today. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else-this is home to me,” she said. Peta still remembers the first day Roz walked into Nundah Kindy, replacing her beloved teacher. “I was less than impressed and gave ‘Miss Roz’, as she was affectionately known back then, a hard time,” she said. “But it wasn’t long before I was won over by Roz’s contagious enthusiasm, warmth and love for life and learning. We soon formed a lasting friendship.” For veteran educator Roz, the past 25 years have been magical.
Before and after: Teacher Roz and Assistant Peta formed a lifelong friendship when Roz taught Peta at kindergarten in 1989.
“Spending 25 years watching children develop and grow has been magical and the fun never stops when you work with children,” Roz said. “They’re engaging and delightful every day.” “I can’t think of a single day where I haven’t looked forward to coming to work.” The 2014 Parent Advisory Group President, Danielle Prickett said Roz had created a sanctuary where children are free to run, play, grow, change, create and build. “I love that Roz stands firm in play-based learning for the children,” Danielle said. Nundah celebrated their 50th birthday with a Family Fun Day on Saturday 21 June, inviting all past pupils and teaching staff.
Community Update from Tim Nicholls Member for Clayfield Treasurer & Minister for Trade Many local groups and businesses are gearing up and getting organised for the Nundah Village Street Festival and Art Show. Held on Sunday September 14th from 9am to 3pm, this is an event the family can’t miss.
Come down and check out the artistic and musical talent, wander through heaps of creative stalls, business products and community groups. Make sure to keep a lookout for my stall - I look forward to seeing you there! Recently I was pleased to take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nundah Creche and Kindergarten. Many of those who attended were former students of the kindergarten some years ago. It was great to hear stories from residents who have since built their life here in our community. If I can be of any assistance to you or someone you know please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office at 3262 8819 or send an email to Clayfield@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Wimmers – a soft spot for supporting local Locally owned 100-year-old Queensland business Wimmers Soft Drinks and Woolworths Nundah have partnered to support some of our local sporting teams. Wimmers Soft Drinks have a fascinating history – revived from liquidation in 2012 and successfully re-built by locals Mark Thompson, Sharon Andersen, Peter and Toni Lavin. Wimmers has a factory in Cooroy and a distribution centre in Northgate. “We have re-built the business in the last two years and are very proud of the turnaround,” Mr Thompson said. Wimmers’ are a small business owned and run by locals which competes with global players like Coca-Cola and Schweppes. “We have saved approximately 30 jobs and are in the process of building a new 8000 square metre factory that will pave the way for greater expansion.” Woolworths Nundah and Wimmers have got together to sponsor Wilston North’s Junior Cricket in the summer and Norths Rugby Club in the winter. Wimmers are 100% locally owned and operated, rare in their market, and something locals can be proud of. Check out the Wimmers Softdrink range at Woolworths Nundah , or visit wimmers.com.au for more information.

The Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) is an initiative that has been running for 25 years to improve the quality of life of children in developing countries. Surgeons from Australia and New Zealand donate their time to provide life saving and dignity restoring surgery that may not be accessible in the children’s home country. These children are brought to Australia by Rotary, so these critical surgeries can take place. A Rotarian brought the ROMAC initiative into action in 1988 when he visited Fiji with a group of surgeons and discovered that the child mortality rate was as high as 25% due to a lack of medial facilities and skills available. ROMAC has since provided urgent medical aid to over 350 children in more than 20 developing countries and as a result has given these children new hope. ROMAC continues to provide this much-needed humanitarian work with the help of volunteer Rotarians and surgeons that donate their time to the program.
To see how you can help play a part in assisting to improve the quality of life of children in need, please visit romac.org.au/how-to-help.
Theary was abandoned due to the unsightly birthmark on her face but fortunately her new ‘mum’ took her in, contacted ROMAC and now she lives a normal, healthy life with her new, caring family in a remote Cambodian village.
Linda is a typical example of what the ROMAC surgeons achieve. Her life would have been a nightmare without the delicate surgery that has enabled her to become a normal, healthy baby.
