The Flower Crown It may no longer be summer but the must have accessory for any event is definitely still the gorgeous flower crown. What was once confined to the heads of 1980’s brides in their pouffy lace has now seen the revival of the flower crown as the ‘must have’ fashion accompaniment. The options are endless and the choice really depends on your personal preference and how bold a statement you want to make! From baby showers, engagements, race days, bridal showers or birthday parties, the floral crown trend is injecting natural art in to many special events. An avid wearer of the floral crown myself, I have to say there is nothing more amazing than adorning your hair in fresh blooms. I definitely love the monochromatic style, which I think emulates style and elegance. Flower crowns are our specialty at The White Bungalow and our floral designers can work with you to customise a unique crown to compliment your outfit. Prices start from just $59.95.

Toombul Shopping Centre welcomes new Bunnings

Meet the Principal and senior staff, tour the school with students, and discover the St Margaret’s difference.

DISCOVER the DIFFERENCE!

Toombul Shopping Centre is set to welcome Brisbane’s latest Bunnings store, opening in the second half of 2016. The former BiLo supermarket will be converted into a new smaller-format Bunnings store. Bunnings General Manager of Property, Andrew Marks, said Bunnings is committed to supporting the local community. “Bunnings’ investment in the Toombul area will provide great job opportunities for the local community. Over 50 team members have been employed at Bunnings Toombul, representing strong employment opportunities for local residents.”

Over $8 million will be invested in the development, fit-out and stock for the store. Bunnings Toombul will not be the first Bunnings store to open within a shopping centre. In 2014, Indooroopilly welcomed the first small-format shopping centre Bunnings store in Queensland. The smaller store will still offer a wide range of products, including outdoor living, home improvement and specialised trade supplies. Bunnings continues to expand on Brisbane’s northside, with a Bunnings warehouse site currently being explored at Sandgate Road, Virginia. Bunnings Toombul – opening soon at 1015 Sandgate Road, Nundah.

I’m not flexible, can I do yoga? You don’t need fancy leggings, an expensive mat, or to be able to stand on your hands to practise yoga. You don’t even need to be able to touch your toes! In fact, it is often said that yoga isn’t about being able to touch your toes; it’s about what you learn on the way down.

This is true, yet flexibility is one of the first things to go as we age so the less flexible you are, the more you stand to gain from yoga. Yoga is suitable for everyBODY and a typical class includes physical postures, breathing and meditation. With regular practise, you may notice benefits such as: • flexibility and balance • i ncreased energy and • reduction of stress, • core strength productivity anxiety and depression. • healthy spine and back • better quality sleep Starting something new can be intimidating, so if you’ve never done yoga, a one-on-one or small group class is a great place to start. In the privacy of your home, you’ll be guided through the basic yoga postures, learning how to modify each pose to suit your body and get the most out of your yoga practice. Do Property Prices Double Every 10 Years? Most people have heard the theory that property values double every decade, but is this true? Brisbane experienced positive growth last year so does that mean we achieved this notion? Over the last 10 years to January 2016, Brisbane values increased by only 44% while over the previous decade (10 years to January 2006) home values more than doubled and soared by 150%.

If we look at value growth over the 5 years to January 2016, it looks unlikely that by the time January 2021 rolls around, home values would have doubled over the decade. In fact, over the last five years, Brisbane has seen cumulative growth of only 5.5%. While there was a time when home values doubled over a 10-year period, the data suggests that the times of rapid rises are behind us. New SMSF rules Effective from 1 July 2016, the legislation surrounding Self Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) and the provision of financial advice is changing. From this date, accountants will need to be appropriately licensed in order to provide advice in relation to any recommendation or opinion that is intended to influence you in making any decision in relation to self managed superannuation (including whether to establish, contribute to or draw a benefit from an SMSF, or any investment decision by an SMSF trustee), or that could reasonably be regarded as being intended to have such an influence. The regulations will continue to permit the provision of administrative, compliance, audit and tax advice in relation to SMSF. If you are involved in an SMSF in any way and take advice from your accountant in relation to any of the issues listed above, you need to be asking your accountant if they will be appropriately qualified and licensed from 1 July 2016. Three senior accountants at Whytes are close to completing the education and qualification process and expect to be licensed to provide SMSF advice from 1 July 2016. So from this date, Whytes will continue to provide administrative, compliance, audit and tax advice for SMSF and also be in a position to continue with the more strategic advice detailed above. GUIDE

Fitz + Potts

Proud to be Nundahners After a first date discussing the lack of suburban bars in Brisbane, Cassie Potts and Brett Fitzpatrick decided to go ahead and create their own. “We were more interested in the idea of popping over to a friend’s for a beer than a night out in an uptight city bar – I think they call this ‘being in your late 30s’! We thought it’d be great if there was a bar that was as easy and casual to visit as a mate’s place,” says Cassie. Cassie, who has a background in interior design, set out to create a home rather than a bar, with a retro, yet warm interior, sourcing pieces from charity shops and online. The pair selected a unique range of Australian beers, spirits and wines and created a casual, tasty and substantial food menu.

“We are essentially a licensed café, so our menu offers brunch through to dinner.” “Our jaffle platters, beer battered pickles, goat and vegan pies, meat/cheese and vegan platters…all are equally popular with punters,” says Cassie. The latest development at Fitz + Potts is the opening of the function room, the Den of Disco, which is open for small group bookings. Guests have the opportunity to create their own personal house party in this late-70s dream room. Cassie and Brett say the most enjoyable part of their job is hanging out with the regulars, who they count as good friends. But there is another aspect of the job they enjoy. “We won’t lie; we also enjoy the bit about our job where we sample all the wines, beers and spirits…quality control, you know!”

The Art of Food After a visit to Japan, Brisbane North resident Alissa Lonergan created Studio Chiisai, which specialises in creating miniature food sculptures from polymer clay. “Tiny food sculptures are something I do purely for the fun of it. I spend a few hours every week sculpting, at the end of those hours I might only have one or two things, but it’s the process I really enjoy,” says Alissa.

“It’s very satisfying spending so much time sculpting something in such detail, and some people on Instagram think it’s actually real food!” Due to high demand, Alissa has temporary closed her store for custom orders, but hopes to open Studio Chiisai in the near future. Bees and Beers Sarah Hamilton has tried her hand in some diverse jobs, but she’s recently returned to her first passion - horticulture. “I took a leap of faith and left the corporate world to start my own business hosting native bees,” says Sarah. Local residents can see Sarah’s native bees in action at Nundah bar, Fitz + Potts.

Sarah worked with Fitz + Potts owner, Cassie Potts, to install a stingless beehive on the rooftop of the bar. “Firstly, we love these little creatures – they are fascinating to watch. But our main driving force for installing the hive was to assist the natural ecology of our suburb,” says Cassie. Sarah is passionate about educating the community about the benefits of native bees. “Native bees are low maintenance pets that require no permits or safety equipment to keep. Everyone can help to reverse the decline of pollinators by conserving native bees.” Bee Yourself 0433 226 791 | www.beeyourself.com.au

Grilling Art

Artisan grilling opening in Nundah Village When chef Jefry Irawan co-founded Grilling Art in 2013, he set out to provide modern Australian cuisine that was fresh and healthy and visually enticing. Locally sourced and freshly prepared food is key to Grilling Art’s signature style and is central to the success of one of their most popular food items – their burgers. Their beef patties are mixed and hand pressed fresh every day and they always use local produce. Most of the sauces are freshly made in store – the homemade aioli sauce has been called addictive! Some of the most popular dishes include the home made eggs benedict, the B.O.B Burger, Ribs and anything from the flaming grill menu. Meals are created using natural and fresh ingredients, and the restaurant offers vegetarian and gluten free options. “We have been inspired by the lifestyle in Nundah, which is fresh and vibrant. Residents and visitors to the area enjoy the healthy lifestyle options and we look forward to tailoring our menu to suit the needs of the area,” says Jefry. The Nundah restaurant is the third Grilling Art to open after their Stafford Heights and Underwood restaurants. For the latest news and updates on Grilling Art, visit their social media pages at f/grillingart and i/grillingart. Grilling Art is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week from 7.30am to 9.00pm.

Maurice O’Connor, CLA Coordinator, is passionate about creating a community where everyone is accepted and has a role. “People with intellectual disabilities are overrepresented on every indicator of disadvantage ranging through physical ill health, mental illness and victims of abuse. Are you up for the Challenge? We caught up with Kathryn, who recently took part in the Studio Pilates 30 Day Challenge, to get the inside scoop. How many 30 Day Challenges have you taken part in? This is my first Challenge. I joined Studio Pilates at the beginning of February and since then I’ve lost 8kg, dropped a dress size and feel fantastic. Were the instructors helpful? The instructors are fantastic. They are always checking in at each class to see how I’m going with the Challenge and if I need any help. Were the meal plans, recipes and dietary information useful? If there’s anything I’ve learnt over the years, it’s that workouts alone won’t get results; you need to focus on nutrition too. The meal plans allowed me to plan in advance and get organised. Would you recommend it to others? I would recommend the 30 Day Challenge to anyone who wants to kickstart their training and be the best version of themselves. If you’re prepared to work hard and commit for just four short weeks, you’ll be amazed at the results. The next 30 Day Challenge starts in August, with registrations closing Wednesday July 27. What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Community Art Show On Friday May 27, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre held its annual Art Show opening night. Over 250 people supported the event, including artists, their family and friends, local Nundah community members and supporters of the Centre and the art community. The evening included music, food, drinks (including locally brewed beer) and an inspiring live art performance. The evening was a culmination of many months of passion and hard work by both the talented artists who submitted art pieces, and the staff and volunteers at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. Particular mention goes to Wendy Cumes, Barrie Cumes, Alicia Hollier, Rosie Fyvie and Amy SandersRobbins who made up the volunteer Art Show committee.

Thank-you to all of the sponsors whose generosity made this event possible. A special thank-you to the major sponsors Hillhouse, Burrough and McKeown: Kedron Wavell Services Club; and Wendy and Barrie Cumes.

The evening was a huge success with all funds raised going towards delivering art therapy empowerment workshops for women who have experienced domestic and family violence. After continued success, the Nundah Neighbourhood Art Show has become a key annual event on the Centre’s calendar and we look forward to next year and its continued growth.

Mini Food Festival in Nundah

Charity Luncheon A charity luncheon was held at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre to raise funds for the delivery of art therapy and empowerment workshops for women who have experienced domestic violence. Hosted by Hillhouse Burrough McKeown Lawyers, the luncheon kicked-off the annual Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Art Show, which opened later that evening and ran for the duration of the weekend.

Enjoy a mini food festival featuring delicious fare prepared by local refugees and asylum seekers during #CreateWelcome Week. Presented by the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Espresso Train, All Aboard the Espresso Café Train will showcase the contributions of our community’s refugees and asylum seekers while sharing the love of food across cultures.

Guests were captivated by the three speakers: Mark Oberhardt from The Courier Mail, Trent Dalton from The Australian and Lee Town from the PhotoVoice ‘Focus on Domestic Violence’ Project. Each speaker provided insights about a different aspect of domestic violence, including Lee Town, who bravely spoke about her own experience as a survivor of domestic violence, in order to raise awareness of this critical issue and the actions we can each take to respond to domestic violence.

Japanese Exchange Program at Mary MacKillop College

By Brianna Ollett, student at Mary MacKillop College

Earlier this year, Mary MacKillop College welcomed 17 exchange students from Southern Honshuu in Japan. The students enjoyed a weeklong homestay with host families from the College community and were provided with a range of cultural experiences. The students participated in a range of games and activities in the College’s Japanese classes using both English and Japanese language. The bilingual interaction helped to develop both their language skills and foster new friendships. The short-term exchange program proved to be a fun learning experience full of cultural discover for the students of both schools. Many students of the Mary MacKillop host families have said that they intend to keep in touch with their new-found Japanese friends.

Film and Television at Mary MacKillop College Mary MacKillop College students are excited about the possibilities of film careers after a recent excursion to QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct. Students were given the opportunity to explore first-hand the vast array of exciting opportunities and career pathways available at QUT. “It was very encouraging to learn that, due to the need for an online presence for most companies and the development of online training packages, the field of film production is a booming industry,” said Year 11 student, Maggie Eckert. “The opportunities for a career in film and television have grown exponentially and the experience provided by this excursion has only spurred my desire to work in the field when I graduate,” said Maggie. Year 11 student, Rebecca Micallef was also inspired by the excursion. “My life has changed as a result of studying Film and TV and visiting QUT. I now know what I want to do and I have a plan for my future that I am excited about,’ says Rebecca. Film and Television teacher, Mrs Karyn Chapman, said that the school ensured that students engaged with up-to-the-minute filmmaking technologies, which ensured that students graduated with industry-standard skills that are highly sought after by potential employers.
