GOOD hrEl&/S Saturday, October t3:

Wisdom 7'.1-t! I Hebrews 4:r2-a3l Mark eo::.7-3o ot Lo:a7-27

While on maternity leave I learned some difficult lessons, including how to handle explosive diapers and how to convince a bright-eyed baby that 3 am isn't really "morning." But my toughest lesson was discovering that my to-do lists were no longer impor"cant. As someone who thrives on crossing things off the list, I was shocked to realize I could only get one or two things done each day while feeding, soothing, and diapering my daughter. lt took me months to understand that the to-do lists that had been central to my life had become a distraction from my life's new center-my daughter and her unique coos, kicks and, yes, cries. The lists weren't bad, but they did draw my focus from her. Similarly, Jesus doesn't condemn the rich man's wealth in today's Gospel reading. But his teaching that "it is easier for a camel to pass through [the] eye of [a] needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God" reminds us that wealth can become a distraction from recognizing our dependence on God. The time needed to manage wealth and the security it appears to provide can leave little room for God. Just like my to-do lists, such comforts that seem so essential ultimately serve as distractions. We may not imagine ourselves aS wealthy even though we're richer than most of the world if we have a roof and three daily meals. But how does our "stuff"homes, bank accounts, clothes, shoes-distract uS from God? We spend a lot of time shopping, making home improvements, and moving money to more lucrative accounts. Do we give that much time to our relationship with God? Maybe we too have some hard lessons to learn about what is central to our Janel Esker I sundaybulletins@liguori.org lives-and what is mere distraction.

,ALOVSIUS TOM FOOD F}ANTRY "We should have no other object but God in our actions and seek to please him alone in all things. " St. Vincent de Paul (t58t-t66o)

Often we say that we want to live our lives as iesus would want us to. Sometimes we hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body and wonder how to incorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives. Some days we feel like we want to Iove our spouse and make him or her feel loved and special. But it can be such a mystery to know and be able to actually make this real for us with our busy lives. A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors of Passionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, here at St Stephen Church on November 3-4. After they experienced this mini-retreat, they lear.ned ways to solve this mystery for their own marriage and now they want to share this good news with others. Please join them. See the website www.livinginlove.org for more information and to register. Or call 839-o837.

endorsement of the hospital's practices. The same applies to Catholics studying medicine there.

According to a recent Georgetown lJniversiry report, 77.7 million Americans are Catholic (CARA, 2011). That number includes Catholic college students who study at non-Catholic institutions because of their academic excellence, Iocation, scholarships, and tuition. In his 1990 apostolic constitution On Catholic l-Jniversities (Ex Corde Ecclesiae), Pope John Paul II acknowledged the validity of a pluralism within Catholic universities; pluralism also exists within non-Catholic institutions. On campus or off, the Church's-and therefore Catholics'-primary mission "is to preach the Gospel in such a way that a relationship between faith and life is established in each individual and in the socio-cultural context in which individuals live and act and communicate with one another." This becomes a matter of "affecting and, as it were, upsetting, through the power of the Gospel, humanity's criteria of judgment, determiningvalues...and models of life, which are in contrast with the Word of God and the plan of salvation" (Part 1, 48). In other words, Catholics do not exist in communities closed in on themselves-they are catalysts enlightened by Christ in the world at large. Byron Miller, CSsR I sundaybull eti ns @liguori. o rg
