ln a time of violence, an age of worldwide persecution, as Sri Lanka bombings show, we have a profound respect for those who suffer for the faith and for the Gospel they embrace. When we count the number of lives lost on Easter Sunday and hear the cries of loved ones left behind, we can feel their pain of anguish and identify with a God who died so that we might live.

ln more recent times we have seen so much drama and tragedy in our world. First, a priest in Montreal was stabbed at the altar during Lent, Then the Passion of Jesus that took place in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the flames that burn the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday of the Holy Week, and E,aster massacre in Sri Lanka last Sunday,

It's not surprising that people are afraid of violence and death. The disciples were pretty afraid. They had really been through a lot since Good Friday. And their futures seemed rather uncertain, to understate the obvious. lf we were in their situation, we would probably be hiding behind a locked door too.

But then something happened, the Lord broke through the barrier they had put up - and for the disciples, everything changed for them from that moment on. They no longer remained in their darkness of fear but began proclaiming Jesus is alive 1:8) and thus, be witnesses or "m5rtyras" in Greek of his resurrection.

Simon Peter, "rock of faith" gave witness to Christ by crucifixion in Rome. The Eleven, including Matthias who replaced Judas lscarrot, and many of the other

early disciples, gave witness for the faith in Jesus Christ during persecution of the early Church. So let's learn something from the Twelve and early disciples, and aliow our faith in the Risen Christ dispel our fears. "For everyone begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.,, (1 John 5:4) fr ihanti

GOOD NEWS! We’re not defined by our weakness, but created for greatness! Look at David, Paul, and the sinful woman. David was an adulterer and murderer, yet he wrote Psalms and was Jesus’ ancestor. Paul killed one of the first deacons, Stephen, yet became the greatest apostle to the Gentiles. The sinful woman’s misdeeds were public, yet what is most remembered is her repentance and love. Sin is not the last word. God’s recreating mercy is. God’s mercy asks for a response so all that transformative power can be unleashed in us. The only thing that stands in the way of God’s renewal rushing in and totally transforming us is our own lack of acceptance. Sin wants to stand in the way of this good news. The evil one tries to convince us that we are too sinful; that salvation and happiness might be for others, but certainly not or us. But David, Paul, and the sinful woman didn’t let that sinister message sink in. David was moved to repentance by Nathan’s words. Paul accepted that he wasn’t saved by his religious fervor or condemned for his errors. He was saved by letting Christ’s merciful love embrace him. The sinful woman refused to be defined by her poor choices. She tearfully made penance at Christ’s feet, and this act of her brokenness gave off a consoling aroma that filled the house. Let the power of Christ’s love be unleashed in you by forgiving yourself and others. Then your weakness will be the first step toward the greatness God has in store for you.

Reading I - Acts 5:12-16 We read of the apostles healing many people and because of this many persons, both male and female became believers. Reading II - Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13,17-19 John is addressing all Christians and he states the great theme of the Second Coming of Christ in clouds of glory.

Reading III - John 20:19-31 Jesus’ disciple Thomas was a disciple whose loyalty was characterized by courage and candor. He was only asking for the evidence that the other disciples had received in the upper room. We need to rethink the nickname given him and remember him as one of Jesus’ faithful disciples.

FAITH FORMATION Youth Ministry

RCIA—Catechumenate

Youth Ministry Recap:

We are grateful to God and to you. Mahalo to all our parishioners and friends who continue to lift up our Catechumenate in your prayers. Seeking Baptism or entering the Catholic faith can be an eventful journey full of trials, discoveries and blessings. Our candidates endured trials and temptations along the way but we are so joyful in their commitments made at the Easter Vigil and the grace received in the Sacraments. Please continue to pray for our newly baptized and confirmed in the journey forward: Erleen Edward and Larry Akiyama, Marie Maumoynier, Danny Limon, John Graff, Neal Blas and Erlas Abedicio. Here are a few pictures from the Rite of Ephphetha that was celebrated by the Bishop on Holy Saturday morning at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.

It has been a very busy Lenten Season for all. Finals, projects and exams, just around the corner so we want to assure everyone of our prayers for our youth and families. We joined in the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. Mahalo for leading your parish in prayer. Superhero themed topics emphasizing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit continues through May. Friday night we discussed Peace and self-control. We also celebrated Easter, which continues on for eight days (the Octave of Easter). Don't miss our meeting May 10, with special guest Mary Rose Timmons. All youth are invited to attend. Sessions begin with supper at 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Email the parish at sspeterpaul@hawaii.rr.com if you want more information.

Family Reflection: • What does it mean to be faithful in your life? • How will you find the most joy in life? What are some things you can do to share this joy with others? • What can you do in your daily life to celebrate your calling as a child of God? Homework: • Find joy in your daily life. Write about it in your prayer journal. • Challenge: Write a rap or song about your Faith in God. Youth Ministry Liability Forms (Spring 2019) - Whether you are new and want to attend youth ministry or if you have not come to youth ministry in awhile, you are always welcome to join us! Please request the form from the office and fill it out, then bring it to the next gathering. This form is required to attend youth ministry.

4

A new phase of the catechumenate process begins mid-June with video lectures by Bishop Robert Barron and discussion of the Mass. All are invited to attend. Please call the office and leave a message on extension 25 for more information or to inquire about Baptism or Confirmation.

What is spiritual comm!"lnion?

s

piritual comm,;nion is a unique Roman Cathoiic devotional practice not to be confused wilh s{icra,fienta./ Communion, which is the participatior-r in the mvstery of christ by eating and drinking rhe Body and the Blood of the Lord.

The development of spiritual communion as a devotion can tre traced ao St. Alphonsus Liguori. It's a form of spirituai yearning to be in communion with Christ during those times when his sacramentai gift can't ire shared. To share in sacramental Communion, one must be ar,vare of rto unconfessed serious sin agiiinst Cod's commands and be ir: gr:od standingwith the Romarr Catholic Churcir. With exceptions for age anci health, onâ‚Ź must also have fasted from all food and all beverages except water for one hour before receiving sacramental Communion. Some Catholics are unable to sirare sacramental Communion beczuse of sickness, geograpl-ric distance from a Roman Catholic community, or unavailability of priests. Ar-ry Christian who lvishes to have spiritual communion witl-r the Lord can do so bir taking a moment to consider God's love demonstrated to us in the life, passion, and death of Christ, Oive thanks ta God for this wonderful gift, and $ay a prayer of spiritual communion.
