Saturday, April 6:

One of the best things about Easter is the candy. Even more spectacular than the jelly beans are those crdme-filled, fat-laden chocolate eggs. And some people (though not me) claim a love of marshmallow chicks and

bunnies. I think we love this candy so much in part because it only comes around once a year. lts rarity makes it special. The same can be said about the apostle Thomas. He's the creme egg of the Bible-his story comes around only on the second Sunday of Easter, and it's usually a favorite of Christians who take heart in believing without seeing. Thomas's rarity makes him special. But this story is about more than Thomas; it also reveals much about the risen Jesus. First, he can move through locked doors and walls to get to his beloved disciples; his love knows no boundaries. Second, even in his resurrected body, he still has wounds. He knows what it's like to be broken and hurt deeply. And third, he speaks and breathes Peace. Not an easy,

Monday, April 8: Annunciation 8 am Mass: soLEMNlrY

everything's going-to-be-just-dandy peace, but a hard-won peace that trusts in God despite suffering and fear. Jesus does the same for us today. The risen Jesus can move beyond the spiritual walls we've built and the emotional doors of doubt we've triplelocked. The risen Jesus can identify with our wounds and pain. The risen Jesus promises us a deep, hard-won peace. And, fortunately, Jesus comes around much more often than Thomas or chocolate-covered crAme eggs. The Risen Jesus is with us always. Do we believe? If Catholics and Protestants can begin with this premisethat Mary is wonderful-it might be possible to step back and consider why. Mrry is an extraordinary human being who holds a special place in the Christian faith for two reasons: first, it was through her that God became flesh in the person ofJesus Christ; and second, she was the first to believe inJesus' mission and ministry.
