heirto this lovely woman.

On this Solemnity of the Epiphany, we celebrate ,o-ur-o.v1/L.rnexpected-: inheritance{he quite undeserved gift of Jesus. Saint Paul writes that the Gentiles

are "co-heirs" to this great gift, but what have we done to deserve such grace? Our culture constantly tells us how much we "deserve'-you've worked hard, so treat yourself to a new outfit, a giant bowl of ice cream, an expensive car.

But in the simplest of places-the tiniest of towns, this little hamlet of Bethlehem-comes a gift we could never do enough to deserve. The magi

recognized this-they prostrated themselves in homage and were changed by their encounter with Jesus. They "went home a different way"-not just physicalln but spiri-tually. Now that the Christmas season is winding down and the long-awaited gifts have

been unwrapped and put away, maybe we can look at the gift of Jesus with Epiphany eyes. May we welcome Jesus today like an unexpected inheritance check in our mailbox-with delighted hearts, humble spirits, and grateful souls. Janel Esker sundaybulletins@liguori-org

Thursday, Jan to: Choir practice (Sun choir)

Time & Talent: Those who spent countless hours get the Main Church, Chapel and Parish Hall ready for Christmas and put the lights and star up outside. lt was certainly a brighter Christmas this year. (Reminder: What goes up, must come down. January :.3th after the 9:3o a.m. Mass) We received many comments and a few cards from parishioners at Nu'uanu Hale as well as the homebound who were touched by your gifts, thoughts and personal notes. Mahalo to all who reached out with a loving prayer. The gifts were received with thankful hearts and much appreciated by caregivers as well, especially the warm blankets and socks. Just in time for the cold wet weather. . Our Faith Formation-CCD who put together a wonderful story of the Nativity with song and costumes. They served as Lectors, Greeters and baked cookies for the families.

Dear Gene. Catholics believe that each book of the Bible needs to be appreciated accord-ing to the principles of its own literary 'We genre. don't look to the Gospels for modern critical history or unbiased biographicaVreporcorial fact-telling. The four Gospels were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Each Gospel writer uses human skill to craft a true story, presenting the saving mystery of our Lord's life, death, and resurrection so that readers may come to know Christ, share his life, and be saved. Every story in the Gospels is shaped to communicate sauing truth, but not every story is told as a direct'Just the facts, ma'am" report of sequential events. So there is sauing sense in which yes, the Epiphany happened exactly as it says in Matthew 2:1"-12. And there is a more literal sense in which no, the Epiphany probably did not happen exactly as it's recounted. What is most certain is the Gospel's saving message of the birth of our true King, the light to all nations, before whom we offer homage and who, when we encounter him, will change our lives and send us home in a new path. The Story of the Other Wise Man is a short novel or long short story by Henry van Dyke. lt was initially published in 1895 and has been reprinted many times since then, including a "centennial edition" published in 1996 by Ballantyne Books. A great bookto read aloud.
