When I was in junior high, my mother was mugged as we left our local library. A man came out of nowhere, grabbed her purse, knocked her down, and ran. I was paralyzed with fear until I heard my mother yell, "Janel, get himl" With no hesitation or realization that this man might have a weapon, I took off after him. I got fairly close before I heard my mom screaming for me. When I got back; she was terrified. She had actually screamed "Someone get himl" but that's not what l'd heard. My instinct was to heed my mother's words even if doing so made no sense. We see Jesus in the Gospel doing something that makes no sense to his parents-something that wouldn't make sense to most parents. "Losing" your child is every parent's nightmare, and I can't imagine the worry Mary and Joseph felt when they realized Jesus had stayed behind in the temple. However, Jesus was responding to his Father's voice-he had an instinctual connection to his Father's will, and he followed without question. But realizing the anxiety his actions had inadvertently caused his parents, he went home and lived obediently with them until he was grown. We may not have been conceived without sin, but that doesn't keep us from nufturing holiness in"our families. We belong first to God, so we need to deepen our instinctual response to God's calljust as Jesus did. When we're first rooted in right relationship with God, we're able to more clearly see our family members'needs and how we can respond to those needs in love. That's what a "holy family" looks like.

Mahalo to the many who helped with the Christmas preparations this year. We are all grateful for your commitment and love for God. A special thanks to our Bread making crew and to the decorators and the helpers for fellowship before and after Mass and to our Faith Formation CCD. As you prepare for the New Year there are calendars (one per family) and Contribution Envelopes available . (Ptease fill out the form if you would like to receive a box of envelopes.)

FPIPHANY CELEBRATION Our Christmas celebration continues with the commemoration of the coming of the Wisemen on the Solemnity of the Epiphany. Our youth will be putting together our Epiphany Celebration of Sharing of Gifts Breakfast Fellowship on January 6th following the 9:3o a.m. Mass. We had many gifts to share last year. lf you would like to pafticipate in the sharing of your talent, please see one of our youth or Geno or Christiana Astarita. Practice will be January 5th at ro:oo a.m. (after Family Mass singing practice) The "Twelve Days of Christmas" refer to the eight days of the Christmas Octave from December z5 to New Years Day, and the four additional days up to and including the eve of January 6, the traditional date of the Epiphany. ln the USA and many other countries, Epiphany is now celebrated on the first Sunday after. New Years, so the exact number rz does not necessarily apply. But the point is, don't throw out the tree on the z6th--the birth of the Savior can't be celebrated adequately in one day. Let the celebration continue through at least through the Feast ofthe Epiphany--if not through the Feast ofthe Baptism ofthe Lord.

SOLEMNITY OF M.A.RY, MOTHER OF GOD (New Year's D-y) January rst-Mass will be celebrated at 8:oo a.m. (Chapel of 5t. Catherine) forthe Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin M"ry, Holy Mother of God. This is not a holy day of obligation. EU CHAF{ISTIC "ADCI$LATION

Every first Wednesday there is Expostion of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel following the 8 am Mass and Eucharistic Adoration. This month the first Wednesday falls on January znd. Please sign up to pray for the New Year, for World Peace and for the intentions of the Holy Father. If you cannot make an hour, stop by for even a few minutes. There are brochures in the entrance of the church. All are welcome. Eucharistic Adoration closes with Benediction at 6:45 pm.

mentioned with no reference to Joseph. Because the people of Jesus' time would ordinarily identify a son in relation to his father, many Scripture scholars conclude thtt at this point,Joseph had died. As forJesus' "brothers" and "sisters," Mark 6:3 isn't the only place in the Bible that uses those terms. Others include Matthew 72:46 ("his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him") and John 2:72 ("He and... [his] brothers, and his disciples went down to Capernaum"). It was customary in Jesus' day to identify cousins as brothers and sisters; in a later cltapter, Mark identifies James and Joses as having a different mother
