account. And an empty cookie jar is a veritable tragedy. Our culture values fullness-full of friends, full of money, full of food.

9:3o am Mass: Catecumen & Elect

Empty just isn't something we strive to be. Yet in today's reading, emptyis a key word used by Saint Paul to describe Jesus. Jesus "emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance." The Greek word in this text for emptying is kenosis.

Monday, March r8: 8 am Mass: + Valentina Lui-Kwan Tuesday, March t9: 8 am Mass: Suzan Tsuruoka-healina

We continue to see this kenotic Savior in the Palm Sunday Gospels-first as Mass begins and then in the reading of the Passion. Jesus moves from being lauded as a king during his entry into Jerusalem to pouring himself out on the crossjust a few days later.

Wednesday, March zo: 8 am Mass: + Eduardo Zabanal Thursday, March zr: 7 pm Mass: + Fr. Ray Nishigaya

He is left without anything to cling to, any fullness to claim-he's empty, which isn't someone or something we'd normally value. But of course, it's in his emptiness that God can do the work of resurrection and new life. During this upcoming Holy Week, we might be busy about many thingspreparing for family visits, shopping for the Easter ham, picking out the perfect Easter dress or suit for our child. Life can be full, and that's very good. But make some room in your life during this holiest of weeks for kenosis-for emptiness-and for remembering our empty Savior and all he did for us.

to celebrate the l-i{}t-V

lf there were ever three days that Christians should want to go to church to pray, it would be the Triduum. These days rank atthe head of the liturgical calendar. They celebrate the most sacred mysteries of our faith, and they ought to be celebrated with the community at liturgy. The Jews have three high holy days, three pilgrimage feasts, Passover, Pentecost, and Booths, and those who lived outside of Jerusalem made pilgrimage to the Temple to celebrate these solemn occasions. The three days of the Triduum are our "high holy days," our "pilgrimage feast," and we ought to make pilgrimage from our homes to church to commemorate and honor how the Lord Jesus laid down his life for us, his friends, for our salvation. Please make it a top priority to go to church ta celebrate the Triduum this year. Reserve

the time. Rearrange your schedule if necessary. Take some personal time off from work. Suspend errands or jobs around the house. Drop everything. Plan to attend the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion of the Lord on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. These days may be optional, but none are more important. Enter into the mystery. htt p //www. cat h o I i c h otd i s h. co m :

The Daughters of St. Paul, Catholic Sisters who are missioned at the Pauline Book & Media Center at rr43 Bishop St., will hold a book fair April 5th-7th after all the Masses. The Sisters will have a selection of religious books, music CDs, and DVDs. The selection will include Bibles, lives of saints, prayer books, and reading materials for all ages. This will be a good opportunity to obtain spiritual materials for yourself and your family to deepen your knowledge of the Catholic faith. lf you have any special requests, please call the Pauline Book & Media Center at 5z:-273:..

SPECIAL GOOD FRIDAV COLLECTI()N Some of us have been to the Holy Land, many of us would like to go. Did you know that there are only a handful of Catholics in the area? Many face daily persecutions and are denied jobs and other basic needs we take for granted. These brothers & sisters alone cannot support these places where Jesus lived and walked and died. The Good Friday collection helps to maintain these Holy sites for all pilgrims.

Jesus' messianic entry intoJerusalem occuffed about a week before his resurrection. Hence, the Sunday before Easter that begins Holy'Week is known as Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion, or Passion Sunday.

Tradition holds that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper as a Passover meal on Thursday night. However, some modern biblical scholars suggest that the Last Supper could have transpired on Tuesday night, which widens the window of time necessary for Jesus' subsequent legal trials before Annas and Caiaphas (|ohn 18:13, 7924), Herod (Luke 'B:6-1,1), Pilate (john 18:2840), and the Sanhedrin-whose seventy members needed to assemble (Luke 22:66J1). Regardless, Jesus habitually prayed at night in the Garden of Gethsemane, and it was there thatJudas led Sanhedrin officials to arrestJesus after the Last Supper. The Gospels concur that Jesus was condemned to die on Good Friday: Mark 15 says, "It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him"; John 19 says "it was about noon"; Matthew 27 says it was "about three o'clock" thatJesus "grrr. up his spirit."
