GOOD NEWS Genesis 3:9-15, zo / Ephesians 1:3-6, :i:.-:-z lLuke :-:26-38 The lsaian quote in today's Gospel about preparing the way of the Lord reminds me

Saturday, December 8:

of what happens in a city when the president or the pope visits- Long-standing in disrepair are spruced up and the "riff-raff' (aka potholes 'homelessaie filled. Buildings people) cleared away. Everything is smoothed out, fluffed up, and brightened to impress. The same happens at our workplaces-the CEO arrives, and desks are instantly cleih and the of-fice productive. John the Baptist was the "voice of one crying out in the desert," challenging people to prepare the way of the Lord. Butthis preparation wasn't literally about smoothing roads and filling valleys. lt was about repenting and preparing one's heart to welcome the Lord-which is exactly what Advent is about.

Sunday, December 9:

"Every valley shall be filled." What are the gaping valleys in our hearts? What do we need to be more full oP Trust? Hope? Generosity?

SECOND COLLECTION-Decernber

I &I

Give to those who have given a lifetime. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests worked for many years for little, if any, pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement. Your gift to today's second collection for the Retirernent Fund for Religious helps to provide prescription medications, nursing care, and more for thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

Did Christidns conle up with the idea of the Christnus tree, or is it yet atrcther religious custom with pagan roots?

-

Betty Mae

Dear Betty Mae,

The origins of our Christmas tree traditions are a little hard to pin down. lt's connected to different strands of history, and some of its meanings were shaped by preChristian cultures well before Christians started bringing evergreens indoors and decorating them for Christmas. Some parts of this tradition are likely rooted in the ancient pagan practice of bringing evergreen plants indoors during winter to encourage thoughts of life while all or-rtside is dormant or dead. Other parts go back to the story of Saint Boniface, the great eighth-century missionary to Germany. Legend has it that after Boniface cut down an oak tree associated with pagan human sacrifice, he encouraged people to take fir trees into their houses and to use the green, upward-pointing branches as symbols of peace and immortality tnd rn indication of God's dwelling place. But many Christmas-tree traditions come from later, medieval Germany, where a fir tree hung with apples and crushed biscuits symbolized the tree of paradise in annual December 24 prodrctions of a morality play focused on Adam and Eve and anticipating the celebration of our Redeemer's coming on December 25.
