fi#fit} istw5 lz Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 / Luke 18:9-14 When I was in college, I found a store that sold children's award ribbons with messages like "l try hard," "#:- Spellerr" and "l'm Potty-Trained!" They're cute for children, but I thought they would be especially funny for adults. I bought a bunch to give as quirky birthday gifts. Fortunately, my friends put them on their bulletin boards instead of wearing them on their Sirach 35:rz-:r4, ::6-:.8

shirts. The Pharisee in today's Gospel might as well be wearing an award ribbon; while praying, he proudly conveys that he is "Most Righteous" and "#r Holy Person." On the surface, he's correct-he has lived a worthy life, and the tax collector has clearly committed more sins. However, Jesus upholds the humble tax collector as the one God favors. Jesus' audience would have been shocked at this reversal because he usually reserves his harshest criticism for the self-important. lt's one thing to live a good life; it's another to forget that God is the source of that goodness. We may not wear spiritual award ribbons on our chests, but do we wear them in our hearts? Do they say things like, "Wears Appropriate Clothing to Church (not lil<e that girl . . .) or "Stays Until The End of Mass (not like those cheaters . . .)"? Sometimes our attempts at holiness can lead us to denigrate others-which is exactly the opposite of holiness. Jesus is clear that it's God who exalts, and it's God who doles out the award ribbons-not us. Our focus is better spent acknowledging our sins and seeking forgiveness rather than finding and using others'faults to lift ourselves up. J an e I Eske r su ndayb u lletin @ li gu o ri. org

The word catlnlic means "whole,"

"universal," "complete." To be Catholic, we must include everyone' I once served as pastor ofthe only Catholic parish in a town of 20,000 people, more than half of whom were Catholic' The 17 Baptist churches included a First Southern with services only in English, a First Baptist with services only in English, a First Baptist with services only in Spanish, and e Southern Baptist with services only in Spanish. The Catholic Church goes out of its way to make sure that never happens to us and that all people feel a part of the Catholic Church. One way to make a person feel welcome is to offer Mass in his or her native language, which is why my parish offered Masses in Spanish and Vietnamese as well as in English. It wasn't just about language or nationaliry either' We had Sunday-evening Mass to accommodate the many people who worked Sunday mornings. And we also had lr"tttt that brought the entire parish together. The result wes thet we had six weekend Masses rather than six different communities.
