The vigilant servants awaiting the master's return in today's gospel don't have anything on my mother. During my adolescence, she was the master of vigilant waiting, even in sleep, When l'd arrive home after a night out, l'd creep quietly into her bedroom to let her know I was home. Though she appeared to be asleep, she slept the sleep of a parent with a teenager-one eye and ear always open, awaiting the turn of the key.
It was amazing how she knew, even while half asleep, whether something was wrong. The night I came home after a boyfriend had broken up with me, I gave her the usual kiss goodnight, and she immediately turned on the light and asked, "What's wrong?" Her maternal senses were on alert even in the middle of the night. That's true vigilance. Whatever you call it-spidey sense, maternal hunches, spiritual vigilanceJesus challenges us in today's gospel to be ready for God at all times. I don't think that means being hyper-alerL, expecting God to pounce from around the next corner. lnstead, I think it's being like the mother of a teenager; able to rest, but with a highly tuned intuition about her child's feelings and needs. We don't know the exact moment we'll meet God next; we don't know the exact time God will call us home. But we can prepare ourselves for those moments by nurturing our prayer life, refusing to let wounds fester, seeking forgiveness, and living each day out of gratitude. These practices deepen our spiritual vigilance, helping us be more prepared for God's ongoing encounters and for the moment God calls us home.

The year St. Damien was canonized we restored the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows by Viviana Domingus who worked with Michael Jones. Mr. Jones just recently completed refinishing the statue of Our Lady of Fatima which graced the entrance of the driveway (atthe cost of $3,8zr.oo) She is now beautifully restored and ready to be relocated so that we can make our driveway safer and wider. The youth, working with David Choo, will help us to find a suitable location for her.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace was dedicated on August t5, :'843 and is the mother church of our Diocese. She is the oldest Cathedral building in continuous use in the United States. The building is made of coral stone blocks. Since then there have been several restoration projects, including one by Bishop Alencastre which added the Doric columns to the front faEade. We celebrate her dedication with a Festive NOON Mass and at 6:oo p.m. with a Rosary for Justice and Peace. All are welcome to join in the celebration. ++i@':#:e=w

Catholics-have a devotion to she's the Mother of God. Blessed Mother because the The Redemptorists' devotion to Mary is unique for two -t- -rreasons. First, our founder, Saint Alphonsus, had a great love for Mrry. FIe's known as one of the Marian doctors of the Church. He saw her as a powerful intercessor on our behalf, Second, in 1866 Pope Pius D( gave the original icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help to the Redemptorists and asked us to make her known throughout the world.
A
The original icon hanp in the Church of Sant'Alfonso in Rome. To see a live video stream of the icon, watch a live service from the Church of Sant'Alfonso, or leave prayer intentions for Mary, go to omphicon.orgliconfeed.html. Other orders also have a special love for Mary-the Oblates ofMary Immaculate and the Carmelites, to name two. Some have a special devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus or Christ's passion. But all Catholic religious orders also have devotion to the Blessed Mother, just as Redemptorists also have devotion to the Precious Blood and Christ's passion. F r.
