Saturday, January z5:

What if today's Gospel scene played out in your church this weekend? A mansomeone you've never seen lector-steps to the ambo and reads from the Old Testament. He's a compelling speaker-you feel like you've never heard this passage before, even though it's certainly been read hundreds of times. He seems to give it new voice. And then, after finishing the proclamation, the man declares that he is the fulfillment of what was just read. The reading he proclaimed was about him. It's Jesus, right in front of you-but would you recognize him? Would you have heard that reading anew, or were you thinking about where to go for Sunday brunch, or wondering how long the priest's homily would be, or worrying about the coming work week? Would you have missed Jesus present in the proclamation of

Scriptures, we hear them every week at Mass-we might even have a Bible somewhere. But do we truly make God's Word a meaningful part of our lives? How attentive are we to the proclamation at Mass? Do we take time during the week to read a passage or two on our own? Jesus is the Word of God made fleshand he tells us today that he came to bring glad tidings, freedom, and Good News. Are we listening?

DearWendy, It's good for you to be concerned. Many events and groups seem innocent, but further investigation often reveals that the event or practice is really designed to persuade people tojoin their faith. For example, a Protestant church in our town regularly invites teens from all faiths to a free evening of movies and pizza. The night always ends with preaching, so I told. our teens they shouldn't go. Some types of yoga are associated with the Buddhist religion, but others are simply a way to rela& exercise, or

sponsor isn't usingyoga to proselytize, you're fine. I started doing yoga a few years ago when I needed an exercise that was easy on the knees. It helps me slow

down and focus on what's important, so my meditation and prayer have improved. For example, while holding a pose for three minutes, I say theJesus prayer. Yoga didn't take me away from the Church-in fact, I think it's brought me closer to Jesus. So keep using yog* as an exercise, but also let it help you focus onJesus' love for you. Fr. Patrkk
