the rest of the week fly by even though l'm forced to cram five days of work into four' Does the same hold true for this final week of Advent, which is just two days long? Today it's still Advent (ex-pectation, anticipation, preparation); in 48 hours, it will be christmas (fulfillment, cgmglgtion, celebration). That's a quick turnaround' I love short work weeks. A Monday holiday makes

How do we fit seven days of spiritual preparation into a few hours?

We can take a lesson from Mary, who first experienced the transition from Advent expectation to the celebration of Christmas-through her own body' Mary's preparation included a long journey "in haste" (at several months' pregnant, I .orldn't do anything "in haster" so to me this is an especially impressive feat!) to see her also-pregnant cousin Etizabeth. The women's joy is palpable. Elizabeth's recognition of Mary's blessedness speaks volumes about true spiritual preparation: "Bleised are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be

Mary believed that God would do what he said he would do. She believed God keeps promises. This was the key to Mary's holiness-trusting that God would keep his word.

perhaps, in this short fou*h week of Advent, instead of a spiritual cramming sessionr'we need only undertake this basic preparation for Christmas: Believe that God keeps his promises. God has promised that we will not be alone; God has promised that we need not be afraid; God has promised abundant life, both here on Earth and through resurrection. God kept his promise to Mary. Do we trust God will do the same tar us? Janel Esker I sundaybulIetins@liguori.org
