Penguin

To Kill A Mockingbird I chose the brief because I think the designs of the book covers from Penguin are really interesting. I liked the fact that when you look at Penguin brief, all the book covers are different and don’t look the same. I struggle to read the books but like to look at the book covers and try to work out what the books are about. To Kill A Mockingbird cover was quite hard as a lot of people have done the cover before, I try to make simple drawing using vectors and ink. I drew first, then I wanted the text to look hand drawn. Next time I think I would make the letters look better by blending more. I liked the design of the gun as I used vectors as there is a lot of detail. I wanted the colour to look dark as I wanted it to feel like night time with the bird’s eye glowing. I think it creates the atmosphere that it is a cold dark atmosphere with a farm night where there are no street lights, and there is only the stars and moon light.

Penguin In Cold Blood

In Cold Blood Brief, I liked the concept of murder as I think there is a wide range of things that you can draw from the topic. I tried a lot of different ideas for the background and I changed the colour of the background using photoshop colour. I liked to try different effects, by using hand drawn ink then adding black photoshop layer to make it see through like ghost. I took a photo in Darby place, as I loved the mist- it looked scary. I did another cover that had a blood hand print using different colour palette but I think the design was too simple. The text I used was like a typewriter. I think it looks like it matches book about crime. For the final book cover, I used mix media of a real photo and drawn the image by hand. I like the overall look and I think the work is good.

Qwertee T-Shirt Designs Qwertee t-shirt, I like to do this design as I think it is fun to think about t-shirts. I like to see what I will wear. I think always a simple design is better as I think it is confusing if lot pictures have. I like joke t-shirt because I think they are funny. I tried to make a funny design. I did do another tshirt with a different character but I realised it might be copyright. I did not understand the other t-shirts on the website as there were lots of characters, but I not sure copyright or not so I think better make own.

Illustration Friday Illustration Friday every week different word have, I picked to do some words such as: internet, snail, punk. I tried to design easy and simple drawings. I make fast more, not lot detail needed. Illustration Friday I think is fun because it was quite random, lots of people from different types of media use it and it shows lots of different skills as everyone's design is different. I like to see that some words like snail are easy as I know what a snail looks like but other words were hard as there is no visual reference and I am not sure what it means and help need with. Internet draw I like lot, think if I had more time, I could have have work more made it look better.

Qwertee T-Shirt Design I try 1 t-shirt design use character from the film Treasure Planet. The characters name is Morph. I think very cute and I always loved the film, I think t-shirt design people would buy as I have never see any design like it. Qwertee website- I uploaded the design and people started to vote,. In 2 weeks I had 99 votes but I learnt about copyright and felt like if I left the design up I would get in trouble because of copyright laws if I won and sold any t-shirts. If I kept any money or made any money I could be in trouble. I feel that copyright law can be very scary!!

Moby Brief New statesman brief had an interview with Moby and needed an illustration. I think lot of people listen to music by Moby. I can’t. I have to use my eyes and think how to draw and what. I have to look at photos and pictures of him to see how he looks. I draw first then after used vectors. I like to use vectors because the shape is bold and I can make anything I want. The face detail varies, some has lots and some like the eye detail is not a lot, ear detail not lot, but I think it works well and it is a good image.

Collaboration YCN Bear YCN Bear brief, we had to work in a group. I think working in a group was different and very hard to make everyone feel their ideas had been used. I enjoyed working with people as it made the work funny and I was happy to work with them. I liked the idea but think next time it would be better not to rush as I was busy finishing my other projects and the group had to wait for me to draw my part first before they could start that. They had to wait for me to finish before they could start their parts- Sorry!! The final card looks very good and the image could be seen in card shops. I think we all worked well and only had a few minor problems such as it was hard to stick to one idea as we all provided our different ideas and concepts and dividing the work up. We learnt how to share the work and how to say which design we liked best and why.

Evaluation I knew very little at the start of this module. I have never done a live brief before. This was my first time. It has meant I have a learnt a lot of skills and had to adapt my way of making things to fit the live brief. The briefs were different as the companies provided a list of requirements that they expected to be included, for example text, size, titles. In order to complete these briefs, you had to include all of their requirements. I started the projects by thinking about the different concepts, researching the companies, understanding the topics such as the emotive language being used and how that would influence the design. For example, the book In Cold Blood is all about murder and death and this would be reflected in the colour palette. Altogether I did four different briefs for this project. In order to reflect better, I will split them up. Penguin I started by researching the existing Penguin book covers and looking at what they have done previously. I wanted to make sure the book cover looked enticing to people and people would want to pick it up and read it. I started with thumbnail ideas and doing quick rough sketches to play with ideas. I used a variety of different concepts, such as very obvious and direct messages and then played with some more subtle ideas. Once I had these concepts I started selecting the designs I liked and hand drew the designs in ink. The reason I picked ink was because it makes the lines clear and bold when you scan the image. The only issue was the image then did not look refined enough, so I decided to improve the image by scanning the image in to PhotoShop and used my digital skills to enhance the image. It was a new skill that I learnt to use my hand drawn illustrations, scan the illustrations in to PhotoShop and then used layers to add real photos to create an atmosphere of mist. I learnt that you can mix the different medias to polish the image. This is something that I would like to do again in the future. I used the blogging as a way to look at how the concepts and ideas had developed, and this helped me with my selection of final images. The blogging for me was very visual, and I used the images to help me remember the sequence of things that I had done. Bear The Bear project was new to me as it was the first time I had ever collaborated with people. One of the problems I found was trying to split the workload fairly and equally amongst everyone. We wanted to make sure everyone had an equal say and an equal amount of work, but actually dividing it up was difficult. We solved this by making sure we shared jobs, and that everybody knew what they needed to do. As it was a collaboration with people from different courses, it meant that we needed to have regular communication through online platforms. This was a massive help and made sure we communicated effectively. We started by having a meeting where everybody drew their different ideas. Although this was useful, it also meant that it was quite confusing as everyone had different ideas about the project. From the different roughs that were created, we then selected which images we liked. Working in a group was something that I had to learn how to cope with, as I felt very apprehensive about communicating with the group. The more the group met, the easier the communication became and this helped me with my confidence. It was easier than I had previously thought and I was pleasantly surprised. T-Shirt design The main thing that I had to focus on with the t-shirt design was copyright issues. I had never come across this before. My original idea was to use Disney’s characters on the t-shirt design and did all the drawings and designs at home. However, after a lecture on copyright law, I realized that this was not a good idea, and I had to change my design and concepts. I had uploaded the design that I had done, and it had over 99 likes. I quickly took the design down after the lecture, as I realized that if you make any money from it, that is when the legal issues arise.

Illustration Friday I feel that Illustration Friday was a more relaxed brief and you could play with the concepts and there was more flexibility in the brief. I have enjoyed this brief, and like the challenge that it is a word that you have to create something visual for. I will continue in my spare time to do a few more of these briefs as I enjoyed making the work.

At the end of the module I feel that I have learnt a lot from the processes. The fact that each project was so varied added to the learning. The main thing that I feel I have learnt is to mix the medias to enhance the image. The other major thing that I feel I learnt was that collaborative work can be very successful, and that communication with other people can be in a variety of ways and this was easier than I thought. In summary, I enjoyed the module as I feel it has been very varied and I feel more confident in myself as it was me that had to select what briefs I wanted to do. This has helped my self confidence and encouraged my independence.
