Brief Start Research Development Process Final Application Evaluation

Brief Context: •

In a professional context your individuality and effectiveness as an illustrator will be measured by the skills you have and, more importantly, how you apply them. You are viewed through your work, its personality, its tone of voice and creative concerns.

Your work should demonstrate an investigation of your own personal, practical and conceptual concerns within the design area and combine this with a selfreflective approach to your own creative and professional ambitions. In selecting content and processes you should consider how each one will help you explore and exploit your own particular creative ambitions. The work that you develop should help you clarify, define, establish, strengthen and /or challenge your individual understanding of where you are positioning yourself as a specialist practitioner within Illustration and the broader design/creative industries.

Brief:

Produce a body of work that demonstrates your growing understanding of your own practical and conceptual concerns in relation to appropriate areas of contemporary Illustration practices. Your response to the brief should focus on one of the following creative disciplines as a starting point for your research and development:

Publishing for Children & Adults

Editorial & Reportage

Character & Narrative

Packaging & Retail

STUDIO BRIEF 1 - RESEARCH & PROPOSAL - Based on research into contemporary illustration, identify and propose a body of work that focuses on your own individual areas of creative interest within Illustration and its role within visual culture and the broader creative industries. See Studio Brief 1 for further information.

STUDIO BRIEF 2 - PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT - Using your proposal from Studio Brief 1 as a starting point, develop a body of work that explores the relationship between product, range and methods of distribution relating to contemporary contexts of Illustration. You should aim to deliver a range of resolutions and proposals that explore the creative use of image and illustration in the development of appropriate creative solutions for print, screen object, and/or environment. You will need to be able to demonstrate an ability to deliver work that has the potential to communicate across a range of products, contexts and media. See Studio Brief 2 for further information.

STUDIO BRIEF 3 - PRESENTATION & EVALUATION - You will be required to produce and present a set of presentation boards and a project report that summarise and communicate the 'story' of your project. You will need to clearly articulate the practical and conceptual development and contextualisation of your resolved products and proposals visually, creatively and professionally. See Studio Brief 3 for further information.

Start I started doing thumbnail roughs and sketches to look at different ideas before picking the final design. I was looking to create potentially a comic book layout, or making one image per page. Due to time constraints and time management I decide don one image per page.

Research- Liam Devereux This is a screen print on to card. I would have liked to have screen printed all my images in similar colours as I really love this colour palette and I love the dark blues and shadows. Devereux has used a 3 colour print which I think works very well. It captures the atmosphere of waking up in the morning, the mistiness, the kettle going on, the steam coming from people’s houses. The image doesn’t need any words. It speaks for itself. This is what I want to create.

Development

I was thinking how he would sit, how he’d watch T.V, if he’d be dreaming of his old life, how he’d regard his working life- just looking at him in different environments. Is he a confident character? Or is he meek and mild, a stooped over figure?

Process

This is a different style, using different processes. I used vectors for the motel which meant I was able to create very precise shapes and very specific sizes. Using spray paint was interesting as this is the complete opposite and is very loose and free- it’s the opposite of using vectors.

Book • I attended the book binding workshop and with the aim of making a book for this project. However due to time I didn’t get the chance to make the physical book. On the next project, however, this is what I aim to do.

Final

I made 6 final images. I wanted to ensure they stuck to the theme of Frankenstein which is why I picked the green and black colours and stuck to this throughout the whole series. I decided to use ink because you can make the colours darker and it creates a texture to the drawing. Also if you use a dry brush you can create facial hair- brush strokes give more detail.

Final

For these next 3 images I decided to focus on context. I wanted to show that he had a job but I didn’t want to just show the picture of a truck which is why |I chose the sign truck stop- I wanted to be more careful in how I portrayed him. I anted the images to look old and convey an atmosphere of age.

Application The aim was to make a book but again this came back to time constraints. Instead I created a mock-up book to show the order of the images and to give an example of what I was aiming for. I feel these images have the potential to became a book and would fit well in that format, but also have the potential to be individual, stand-alone images.
