EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
ABOUT EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra serves our community through a comprehensive array of education and community engagement programs, ranging from arts-integrated curricula for pre-school students to weekly mentoring with disadvantaged youth to “side-by-side” concerts in which students and avocational musicians from the community rehearse and perform with the orchestra. As the only full-time professional orchestra in Louisiana, the LPO meets a critical need in helping to make music a part of life for citizens throughout our state. Of the approximately 100 orchestral performances produced by the LPO each season, 35% are education concerts for pre-school through high school students. Further, 20% of the orchestra’s performances are presented either free or at reduced cost to the community. The LPO reaches an estimated audience of more than 18,000 patrons through free and reduced-cost performances and more than 50,000 students through education concerts, mentoring programs, and arts-integrated curricula materials each season.

Amanda Wuerstlin,
Director of Education and Community Engagement
LPO musicians are fantastic performers and are also excellent educators. Roughly two-thirds of the orchestra teach instrumental music outside of their LPO schedule. Their work in various parts of the community, serving students from pre-K to adulthood, has helped us to expand our education season for multiple grade levels and has played a successful role in building relationships with teachers.

Chair of the Education Committee
Every child in New Orleans should have the opportunity to learn the difference between a violin and a guitar, a saxophone and a bassoon, Beethoven and Stravinsky, or ostinato and harmony. With increased cuts to arts funding in this state, LPO’s educational programming may be the only access some of our children have to a well-rounded cultural education.
