It is difficult to know exactly how many people speak English. Language experts say that about a quarter of all the people in the world speak or use English. There is no doubt that English has become a world language.
Who uses English?

In Ireland, Canada and New Zealand, for example, most people have English as their rst language. This means that they learn English at home and speak it all the time, at home, at school and at work. n other countries, like akistan, outh Africa and ingapore, English is an of cial language, along with one or more other languages. eople communicate in English at school or at work, but they often speak another language at home. inally, other people around the world learn English at school, like any other school subject. That is probably how it is for you.
A bit of history Today, a lot of people use English at work when they communicate with people from other countries. And most of us listen to songs and watch lms in English. But how did a language spoken on a small island in the north of Europe become such an important, global language As you know, Britain is an island, and the British developed a large navy very early. n , four years after hristopher olumbus had reached America, the British settled in anada. As time went by, they also settled in orth America, the aribbean, Australia and Asia, and later took control over parts of Africa and the outh aci c. These colonies formed the British Empire. English seamen sailed and traded all over the world. ugar, tobacco and other tropical foods, often produced by slave labour, were imported from the West ndies. ubber was brought back from ndia and tea from Bengal.

FIRST! How would you explain the word hygge?
Global Citizens What does it mean to be a global citizen? Peter, Asmaa, Simon and the rest of class 6b try to figure that out by taking part in an international online project. The target is to become aware of and understand the wider world – and learn how to engage with it. Pupils from different parts of Europe share information about their country and get an idea of how others live. Now it’s time to decide how to present one particular thing about Denmark. A

American English or British English? Great Britain and the United States have one main thing in common: the language. The British and the Americans understand each other perfectly well, even though they have different accents, some different words and some different spellings. When you learn English, it is a good idea to know these differences. HEY! YOU FORGOT YOUR PANTS!

FIRST! Would you like to try to live abroad?
Moving Abroad When Juliane was younger, her father was stationed in England. She moved with her family from her hometown in Denmark to Bedford in the East of England for six months. She has been back in Denmark for some years now.
When I arrived in England, I didn’t speak a word of English. My mother had tried to teach me, and it is funny to think back that I couldn’t remember even simple words and phrases. My best piece of advice to other students who are put in a similar situation would be: just try it. Go with the flow. Just try the best you can. Don't just think that you can't do it. A lot of people in my class are afraid of making mistakes when they speak English. I'm sure I was really insecure about that in the beginning, too. I remember in England sometimes I was all quiet. I just sat there. During breaks, we played tag. I knew it from home, so we just played it. I also used body language, my hands and I pointed at things. If we went on school trips, the other pupils would question me: What is this colour called? They tried to teach me English.
abroad udenlands stationed udstationeret similar lignende
I think it's really important to speak more than just one language because then you get an insight into other cultures. And you see the differences and similarities in the languages. You can communicate with people from all over the world and maybe in the future get the opportunity to collaborate with people from other countries. Instead of just sticking to your own first language. English is the first foreign language you learn in Denmark. There are many advantages of speaking it. You hear it in songs, on TV and in films. It’s a world language. I think it's a big thing to be able to speak English and I now know that with a basic knowledge, you can easily build on more vocabulary and phrases.
