Chapter 1 On the beat Do you sometimes sing along to your favorite song when no one is listening? Do you ever dance to music with your friends, your family or your pet? Have your ever been in a mood to put on a really sad love song? Well, then you're not alone! Music is all around us, and it’s a hobby that you can both enjoy on your own and share with your friends. They met in high school where they played together after classes. The band is inspired by the folk music scene of the 1960s and artists such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but their music is also influenced by modern rock. Gabe is the lead singer, and he is great at hitting the high notes. Johnny plays the guitar, Milo plays the bass, and Eek is the band’s talented drummer. They write all of their own songs. Their songs are about social and political issues such as climate change, violence and inequality.

THE GROUP The Jangs Brothers Henley, Booker and Niles Jang have been a music group since they were eleven, thirteen, and sixteen years old. They used to sing their favorite rap songs at family parties back in Ohio – now they perform hip hop music at venues all over the world, sometimes for more than 100,000 people. They have millions of followers on social media, and their fans call themselves “The Fangs” (fan + Jang = Fang). All three of them sing and dance very well, and they have brilliant musicians who help write and perform their songs. The brothers sing about the start of the hip hop movement back in the 1970s and about racism in America.

THE SOLO ARTIST Stella Harlow Stella Harlow is a British singer and songwriter best known for her catchy pop songs that are played on radio stations across the globe. Her dad taught her how to play the guitar when she was only eight years old, and both of them are influenced by country music today. Stella has her own record company, Stella Records, and her own clothing line, By Harlow. Her white cat, Lily, also has a very popular Instagram account with thousands of followers. She writes songs about relationships, body positivity and women’s rights. Her favorite singers are Madonna and Lady Gaga.
