Hi, Sandra, I’m from A PIECE OF CAKE. Can I ask you a few questions? Sure. Go ahead. Now, I know you are 12, and live in Quebec, Canada. That’s right. We live in an apartment. It’s on the 3rd floor, with a great view of the Saint Lawrence River. Sounds nice. Everyone in Quebec province speaks French, don’t they? That’s right. We speak English at home. In school, some subjects are in French, some in English. My best friend is Simone. We speak French together. Really? What do you and Simone like doing? Well, we play a lot of handball, listen to music – English and French pop music, and hang out at the mall. The usual things. Play games and stuff. Yeah. That’s a smart phone you have there, Sandra. Thanks. It’s new and great for texting and playing games. My favourite right now is Angry Birds. Yeah, that’s fun! Thanks for telling us a bit about yourself, Sandra. You’re welcome.
William William here, William Smith. 12 years old. Boring name. I come from North London. I live with my mum and grandma in a small house. School is OK – I’m good at maths and science. I like reading a lot, too. I didn’t really have any friends until I met my neighbour, Kamil, last year. We play football together. Kamil is a genius at football. I’m getting better, too. We also play football on Kamil’s play station in the evenings. Arsenal’s my team. I go to their matches at Highbury as often as I can.
What’s your favourite football team? Does it have a nickname?
FACT BOX
William and Kamil are Arsenal fans. Did you know that Arsenal’s nickname is The Gunners. No, not because they shoot people! The first team were all workers in a factory that made guns for the army. They played behind the gun workshops after work.
Kamil This is Kamil Kahn talking. I’m 11, almost 12. I come from the south of England. I live with my mum, dad, twin brothers and our dog Hammerhead. Hammerhead looks really dangerous, but he’s a softie, really. Well, I’m good at one thing. Football. I want to be a top player one day. My dad’s a football referee, so maybe I was born to play football. We moved into this house in North London last year. That’s when I met William, my best mate. He plays football too, but he’s not as good as me. We play after school almost every day – in the park or on my play station. We wear our football gear almost all the time, even when we play online. „Football mad“, my mum says.

At seven in the morning I crawl out of bed Put my clothes on, eat some breakfast – Cheese and jam and bread.
4
Brush my teeth, do my homework –just a bit too late Grab my schoolbag, say, “goodbye mum” Hurry out the gate. Sometimes school is marvellous, sometimes just OK

Teen Talk
Every week looks at how the stars spend their day. What does your idol do on a normal day?
Evenings after dinner I often watch TV Pyjamas on and into bed It’s goodnight from me!
This week Teen Talk reporter Monica has been lucky enough to get a peep at what “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe is up to these days. She tries to answer some of the questions you have sent in.
Next week Monica will be “behind the scenes” of – wait for it girls, Justin Bieber’s day. So send in those questions and Monica will try to answer them.
Where is Daniel now? Well, of course, the Harry Potter movies have finished, so Daniel is trying new roles. He’s in The Big Apple – New York – where he’s the star of a Broadway theatre play. Where does he live? Well, in New York he lives in a great apartment, with a fab view over the Hudson River. He loves just looking out his window and watching the boats. And no, no girlfriends, girls! Does he eat a real English breakfast? No, our Daniel is a real healthy
guy. After a looong stay in the shower, he eats cornflakes and milk before he goes to work at the theatre. What’s his fave food? I don’t know if he has a fave food. In New York you can get all kinds of food from all over the world. One thing he often eats before the performance is a huge bowl of cheesy pasta. Who doesn’t like pasta? What’s his day like? Well, after breakfast he goes to work. He rehearses the play, works with his voice and so on. When there’s a break, he reads
books. He loves reading. Then he acts in the play. What does he do after work? When he comes out of the theatre, there are always lots of fans wanting his autograph. But no night life for Daniel. He’s always tired after a long day and usually goes home and watches cricket on TV – he’s a great Quiddich – sorry, cricket fan! So you can see that Daniel is a busy guy. Let’s hope we can see him soon in a new movie!

William’s kite William came home one evening. Granddad was back from China! “Here’s something for you, William,” he said. A present – great! William guessed it was a new computer game, something nobody else in school had. He pulled the paper off. There was a picture of a dragon and Chinese writing. A dragon? “What is it, Gramps?” “It’s a kite, William.” A kite? William was disappointed, but he said, “Thank you so much, Gramps.”
The next day Granddad came by and they put the kite together. Well, William had to say that it looked really great. It had a big dragon head and a long yellow and pink tail. “I’m going to call it Ergon,” he said. He could almost see Ergon smile. The next sunny weekend they took the kite to the park outside town. There were lots of people there flying kites. There were big kites, small kites, kites in all colours and shapes. Granddad made Ergon fly right away, but when William tried, Ergon just flopped on the ground. He tried again and again and then suddenly Ergon lifted in the wind and flew – higher and higher. He was free! Ergon floated high above them, higher than all the other kites. Now when it is good weather, Grandad comes round and says, “Let’s go fly with Ergon, William.” William goes and gets Ergon. Ergon seems to know he’s going flying because he almost pulls William out the door! William sets Ergon free and when he is holding the string, he imagines what it must be like to fly up there, and what things look like from so high up. Kite flying is fun. Ergon is certainly one of William’s favourite things.

Friends near and far

imone is my best friend. She lives in the apartment block next door. We go everywhere together and share clothes, music, everything. Of course we see each other every day, but that’s not enough – we text together when we get up, go to bed, all the time, everywhere. Not in school, of course, that’s not allowed! We update each other on ClassBook at least once a day, often more. ClassBook is also good for friends you can’t see so often. One of my favourite “far away” friends is Lin. Lin is Chinese and lives in Vancouver. We met on holiday on Vancouver Island last year. My

horrible brothers were just driving me MAD. They chased me along the beach, and I bumped right into Lin so we both fell over. I started to say “Sorry”, but then we looked at each other and just laughed. We became friends right there and then. The rest of the holidays we swam together, played beach volley and talked, talked, talked. We were really sad when I had to come back to Quebec. But there’s text messages and ClassBook, and we often talk together on MSN for ages. It’s great to see her “live”. There’s an update from Lin now ... and one from Kamil. I’d better comment on those updates!

Teen Talk has asked kids at schools around Britain to talk about how they use the media. Last week we looked at Play Stations. This week, mobile phones.

How often do your parents and teachers say: “You’re always on your mobile phone”, “Take those THINGS out of your ears!”, “No mobiles in class.” Teen Talk asked two year 7 pupils at Finsbury School, Jamie and Amanda, to ask their class about their mobile phones.

Wiz Kid WILLIAM lives in North London. Last year he met a new friend. Here is William’s story. Summer holiday. Long and boring. We didn’t go on holiday last year – too poor. So I hung out on the streets. I skated. I played ball. I played computer games at night until my dad switched off the computer. Nothing to do. One day I saw a removal van. New people were moving into number 10. I hung around on the other side
of the street. They didn’t have much furniture. The next day they moved in. Mum, dad, twin babies, an aggressive-looking dog and a boy. How old was he? I didn’t know because he was very tall, much taller than me and very thin. He had brown skin and black hair, and almost black eyes. He didn’t smile at all. The whole time I was watching, he didn’t smile.
13
He wore really worn, loose clothes. He looked really weird. I went home. Mum asked me that night why I didn’t go and ask the new boy to play, but I said he was too weird, and went to splat a few orcs on the computer. The next day I kicked a football around in the street. I could see our weirdo neighbour in his garden. I didn’t look at him. I kicked the ball
too hard and it went over his garden gate, fast. I didn’t see him move, but he headed the ball right back to me, so it landed at my feet. Wow! I kicked hard back, low this time. He didn’t seem to look at the ball, but stopped it, turned it and kicked it right back to my feet. Then he smiled. “Hi”, he said. “I’m Kamil, I’m a wiz kid with a football. Wanna play with me?”
