Hello, I am pleased to say that this e-mag is growing from strength to strength, with viewing figures in the thousands for an edition, (and growing).

We must be getting something right, and long

may it continue!

Now that we have entered the final stretch of the academic year,

it

seems

more

important

than

information to you, in the right way.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

This week we spoke to Matt, an ex-Long Road student who now works for the

Cambridgeshire Constabulary's ICT department. Matt,

who

always

knew

he

wanted

to

work

in

technology,

chose

A-Levels

subjects that would compliment his chosen career choice, “ICT and Computer Science were a good fit for me. My career choice did not change, in fact being around technology for so many of my lessons strengthened my desire to work with technology when leaving college. My progress coach was also very helpful in giving me advice on options that I could take after leaving college. He was supportive of my desire to go straight into work, and helped me review my CV and do research into jobs that would fit my skill set.”

From the recouces his Progress Coach had given him, Matt was able to search online for a job and Cambridgeshire knowledge

managed to secure several interviews, one being with the

Constabulary,

gained

during

my

Road

questions, really

where

helped.

I

the also

researched the latest technology products and news in my own time, which demonstrated to the interviewers that I had a keen interest in ICT.”

Matt was also able to showcase his impressive skills through his extra-curricular activities outside of college, ”I was completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's award with Long Road at the time, and the experiences and skills learnt during the sessions and expeditions helped me to answer scenario questions that came up during the interview. I was also able to use my experience in the Air Cadets to answer some of the questions, for example when asked how well do I work in a team. My extra-curricular work and research made me stand out from the other applicants which helped me to get the job. I would encourage everyone to do take part in an extra-curricular activity in their own time, be it a sport, youth organisation, DofE, or anything else. These experiences both make you stand out from the crowd and give you skills that you can utilise during an interview and when on the job, or studying at higher education.”

"I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO DO TAKE PART IN AN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY IN THEIR OWN TIME, BE IT A SPORT, YOUTH ORGANISATION, DOFE, OR ANYTHING ELSE. THESE EXPERIENCES BOTH MAKE YOU STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD AND GIVE YOU SKILLS THAT YOU CAN UTILISE DURING AN INTERVIEW AND WHEN ON THE JOB, OR STUDYING AT HIGHER EDUCATION.”
