CAREERS LRSFC ISSUE 11
AND PROGRESSION
Welcome to the start of the 2020 Academic Year. For sure, we can all recognise the bumpy five months that have brought us to this point, but how positive it is to start the new academic year with vigour and excitement at the opportunities ahead. Of course for Year 1 students, Long Road Sixth Form represents a big change from previous institutions, and we are delighted to have you on board. It is also with fondness that we welcome back our Year 2 students, all be it to an environment that is not quite the same as it was when you left! Regardless of your year group, be sure that we are focussed upon delivering the safest education programme we can, and any changes you encounter have been thought through by a team of dedicated professionals with the simple goals of helping you back into education, and helping you to move forward with your personal career development.
Welcome!
But what might that development look like? It is easy to slip into an insecure mind-set when so many variables seem to change daily in the media, but there really are some positive messages out there too. For example, The Bank of England August 2020 Monetary Policy Report, reveals that many of the redundancies experienced over the summer were predominantly in specific sectors such as airline carriers and the holiday industry, and whilst we acknowledge that this is an obvious blow to all of those concerned, it is less reported that many industry sectors remain buoyant and are actually short of candidates! The ONS Labour Market August 2020 Survey actually reports that there are 113,000 more people in employment in 2020 compared to 2019. So, we want to build your confidence by helping you to develop a stronger qualification base and help you to recognise how to gain ‘in-demand’ employability skills so that you can move forward and seize these opportunities. In fact, the Hays Career Insights Snapshot Report, published by Hays Recruitment in July 2020, revealed that 53% of employers have access to only some of the skills they need […] to meet organisational objectives. These skills include managerial and leadership, the ability to adapt to change, and both communication and interpersonal skills. We remain committed to your personal development and hope to show you how you can strengthen your employability skills, alongside securing the qualifications you have signed up for.
"We remain committed to your personal development"
Why do we think this is so important? Well, as much as we try to get on with our lives, there is no doubt that Covid 19 has had an impact and has the potential to affect we look at our future careers. For example, in a report by Trendence, reflecting A-level student feelings in the last week of July 2020, they found some interesting results regarding thoughts about their future plans – university, or not?...
In July, 20% of the students had changed their minds about their plans for the future.
Of those who had changed their minds, 1 in 2 were considering a different subject for university, whilst 1 in 3 were focusing on a different sector completely.
Students said that the reasons for their change of mind included i) more time to consider future financial uncertainty, and ii) more time to research employers
At first sight, these figures are concerning, perhaps suggesting that the students hadn’t thought things through in enough detail in the first place. However, a more positive way of thinking about this is that changes in plans suggest that they had now given greater thought to what they wanted, and made stronger, more informed decisions about what is right for them. Empowering, right, and hopefully will lead to more successful outcomes as they feel happier about their choices? It is this process of gathering information about future job goals, ways of getting there (Uni, Apprenticeships etc.), thinking things through properly about what you think is best for you, and making informed decisions, that we champion at our college. This e-Mag, circulated fortnightly, is part of that approach. It aims to help with clearly identified sections on all the areas you might want to find out about, namely‌
- University options - Apprenticeships - Looking for work - Taking a Gap Year - Employability skills - Other sources of help
We hope you enjoy it. Andy Goodwin- Careers Leader Eloise Wells- Careers Assistant and e-Mag Production

ig Voice London is a social mobility charity, which seeks to engage young people between the age of 16 and 18 with law and legal policy, with the aim of improving diversity in the legal profession."
"The Model Law Commission is a threemonth long project that provides ALevel students with the chance to simulate the work of the Law Commission. We split the pool of students into four groups, each tasked with the reform of one of the following areas of law: (1) Family, Trusts or Land Law; (2) Criminal Law; (3) Commercial and Common Law; or (4) Public Law. From October to December, students undertake a fivestage process: research, formulating recommendations, consulting with their peers, reporting on their proposals and devising their legislation. Each year, the Model Law Commission begins with a two-day conference, which is kindly hosted by the University of Law, Moorgate. It is over the course of these two days that students are introduced to their respective topics by experts in the field who come from all over the country to speak to them. The young people then take that information and over the following weeks discuss reform ideas with each other, their Group Leaders and their peers. Finally, in late November, individuals from the Law Commission itself visit our students and advise on the difficulties in reforming the law and how to write a law reform report. The project then concludes with a final event in Parliament in December or early January.
