In research released to our college recently, we learned that our students are more satisfied with the Careers Advice they receive than the regional figure, or across the whole UK (83% satisfied with Careers Advice at Long Road, vs 71% and 72%, respectively)1. That was a real pleasure to see, however, after teasing apart some of the information, it was clear to see that the Covid 19 restrictions currently in place, have a potential to impact negatively on our ability to reach out. The preferred ways of accessing Careers Advice is via 1:2:1 sessions (73% of responses) or via Careers Fairs (65%). Thankfully, our Progress Coaches meet this challenge with a detailed Tutorial Programme and online meetings with students. However, Visits to Companies, HE Fairs, Guest Speakers coming in to deliver a class session, and work experience, all fare less well. Clearly, if we spend most of our time at home, then it is hard to deliver on these elements… but not impossible.

Consider, workshops and Careers Fairs all took place between 8 – 12 February, during National Apprenticeship Week, some students recently enjoyed a virtual tour of the British Beet and Research Organisation – BBRO – as part of their Applied Science Programme, and are soon to have a similar virtual tour of Addenbrookes hospital. Guest speakers have delivered talks to Biology students from local business Costello Medical, and they will be offering similar talks to Business students in March, whilst the Police are currently setting up this year’s Annual SAFE Award for Graphics students, and Criminology students. These are just a few of the activities that the college is arranging. Where there is a will, there is a way!

We would encourage all our students to embrace the challenges that face us at the moment, and look to engage with the world of work and the offers of support, even if it means approaching it in a different way to previous years. So, things to look out for in the future, include: •

The 10th National Careers Week, 1-6 March

YouChoose - Careers Film Series (Insights into local Business in interviews with college Careers Team) - to be released mid-March

Opportunities Ahead Live Sixth Form Careers Event: up to 50 local employers, 25 March

Speakers for schools Virtual Work Experience - Current, and ongoing – contact Emma Greenhill for more information (egreenhill@longroad.ac.uk )

How to stay positive during the Lockdown?

As usual, we’re asking you to leave behind the stresses and demands of the real world and give some time to yourself. In this edition we have provided a thought to consider, a choice to ponder and an action to take should you want to. There’s no pressure to do these. Just take some time to be by yourself and ponder whom you might want to be when the lockdown is over.

The word ikigai (pronounced i-kee-guy) is a Japanese idea meaning a reason for being; including a sense of joy and purpose. To begin the process of finding yours, you need to take some time to think about – • What you love • What you’re good at • What the world needs, and • What you can be paid for.

Resources provided by Vespa info@vespa.academy @vespamindset

Of the four, two are internal. They’re about you (what you love, what you’re good at.) Two are external; about the world around you (what the world needs, what you can be paid for) and might require some research, discussion and further thought.

Others might have looser connections. Shift things about, link them, scribble additional ideas down, turn your list into a vast interconnected mess of thoughts and ideas.

Not all four need to be equal. You need to find the balance that best expresses who you are; what you stand for; your values, beliefs, hopes, plans

List What You Might Be Able to Get Paid For Take your list of passions and strengths and begin to add other factors over the top. You might use a highlighter, post-its, or coloured pens if that floats your boat. Time to make some choices: of the things on the list – what could you be paid for? And how important is that money to you? Freedom, flexibility, creativity, autonomy, risk, challenge… all of these things might be more important to you than cash.

List what you love. In this list, choose and list every interest you have. When are you happiest? What gets you excited? Be specific rather than general. Make the list as long as possible. Try and capture everything – no matter how small – you feel positive about. List what you’re good at. Take time to make a few more choices. Extend the first list by adding things you’re good at. Be kind to yourself – ‘good at’ doesn’t mean ‘the best at’ or ‘good relative to a world-class superstar’. It means good enough. Then see if there are connections between things you love and things you’re good at. Some might be straightforward – you might love and be good at the same thing.

Finally…

See if you can find one thing – just one! – that comes closest to fitting (i) something you love with (ii) something you’re good at plus (iii) something you might be able to get paid for. Now spend ten minutes researching it. It’s a clue you might follow as you continue your studies. info@vespa.academy @vespamindset

Missed the UCAS Application Deadline? If you are still considering University the official UCAS deadline was 29th January. This does not mean you can no longer make an application, so what next? You have until 30th June to make a application. It is recommended contact the universities you considering first to check they are accepting applications.

late you are still

If you wait until after 30th June you can apply through clearing. This is a different process again and a good idea to read up your options on the UCAS website.
