I’Easter Break is upon us, and many will be glad to use this time to reenergise and focus their thinking upon the months ahead. Key ideas for Progression include: Year 1 students – research Apprenticeships vs University as a potential future destination. Think about developing employability skills, and consider volunteering as a way of contributing to the community. All will look good on future Personal Statements, CVs, or even give content to discuss in interviews.
Year 2 students – if you are thinking about Apprenticeships, have you started to look for opportunities? Have you registered with websites to alert you of opportunities? Have you thought about trying to secure something now to get ahead of the competition, instead of waiting for exam results? If you are thinking about university, have you accepted your offer, have you started to prepare for going there in September? If you don’t hold an offer, it is not too late – have you continued/started your research to apply for a place during Clearing when results are released on 10th August? Whatever your focus, we hope that Easter gives you space to rethink, refocus and re-emerge with purpose and vision for what lies ahead. Enjoy the break. Careers Team
Good sleep habits I’m sure you’ve been told many times how important it is to get enough sleep. But, how do you do it? Here are five top tips: 1.Develop a routine. Your body’s internal clock follows a specific sleep-wake cycle. Going to bed late one night and early the next throws your circadian rhythm off balance. Attempting to catch-up on missed sleep over the weekend may not always be effective. So, try to go to sleep at a consistent time.
2. Cut the late-night cardio. If you’re feeling run-down in the morning, your late-night workout on the treadmill may be to blame. Aim to finish heavy exercise two to three hours before hitting the sack. Learn more about how exercise impacts sleep quality.
3. Leave time to unwind. Create a relaxing routine before bed—like reading, listening to music, or doing light stretching. You could also try keeping a worry journal, which can help you process difficult emotions before bed.
4. Baths are best. It sounds paradoxical, but taking a hot bath before bed can drop your body temperature once you’re in bed, in addition to making you feel sleepier and more relaxed.
5. Check your devices at the door. Think of the ideal bedroom as a prehistoric cave somewhere in the Great North: cool, dark, and gadgetfree. Charge your phone in another room, get rid of electronics that cause noise, and ditch the alarm clock, which can make you hyper-aware of every passing minute.

Thinking about Apprenticeships /Employment
PREPARE FOR A REMOTE INTERVIEW Remote work is here to stay … which means so is remote hiring. To ace this relatively new process, you need to be prepared for the quirks of interviewing from home. Here are five ways to set yourself apart. (This tip is adapted from “4 Tips to Nail a Virtual Job Interview,” by Ben Laker et al. ) Take time to set up your space. Have a clean, uncluttered background, and check your lighting so it’s falling on you, not behind you. Make sure to do an internet speed test so technical lags don’t break the flow of your conversation.
Prepare for the unexpected. Master the platform you’ll be using for your interview, and keep notes handy so that you don’t forget to make an important point. Rehearse before you go live. Monitor your pace so it’s easy for your audience to follow, use hand gestures, and sit with an upright and open posture. Spark interesting conversations. Go beyond the usual small talk and ask questions about the team and the culture. Do a little research beforehand to see if you have any common interests or experiences with your interviewer.

MAKING YOUR FIRM CHOICE
Making your firm choice of university can be daunting! We asked two Student Ambassadors from the University of Suffolk to share their experience of making that decision. Tia is a third-year Law student, who comes from Gloucestershire. Emma comes from Bedfordshire and is in her second year, studying Diagnostic Radiography.
How did you feel when faced with making your firm University choice? Tia: It felt like a very big decision and I felt a lot of pressure to make sure I made the right choice. Emma: I was nervous about making the decision because I knew that the university I chose would become a huge part of my life
What tips do you have for year 13 students who are about to make their choices? Tia: Pick the place that is right for you and not your family and friends. There can be a lot of pressure to make a decision that makes everyone else happy and in doing so you can forget about yourself. Also, look beyond the league tables and make a list of what is important to you. I wanted a community feel and lots of new opportunities and experiences Suffolk was the one that best matched my criteria. Emma: I took into account the distance from home (not too close and not too far!), the course structure and the local area. In the end, I choose Suffolk, as I loved the beautiful waterfront campus and the course offered the most time out on placement.
To find out more about the University of Suffolk and all our undergraduate courses accepting late applications for a September 2021 start, please contact schools@uos.ac.uk.
https://www.uos. ac.uk/ How did you feel once you’d made the big decision? Tia: I felt super confident because I knew I’d given it careful consideration and had found somewhere that was right for me. I was anxious about moving four hours from home, but I talk to my family and friends all the time, and it makes it all the more exciting when I get to go back and see them. I have made so many new friends here that I don’t get homesick. It has now been three years and I have no regrets. Emma: I felt confident too – I loved the look of the course at the University of Suffolk and was really excited to get started. I’m loving my time here so I know I made the right choice!
HNDs; what’s the difference from an undergraduate degree? University of Salford Choosing your next steps after sixth form or college can feel like a huge decision; this choice can influence your future career, so it’s important to explore all your options and consider what meets your needs. An increasingly popular opportunity for students is Higher National Diploma’s, commonly referred to as HND’s still studied at university but in a slightly different way. You may be wondering how do HNDs differ from a typical bachelor’s degree. The first obvious difference is that an undergraduate degree will take a minimum of three years depending on your subject and course, whereas a HND can be completed in two years. This reduced study period means that students can enter the working world quicker and potentially start earning and networking earlier. Secondly, HNDs are intended to be hands-on, with emphasis on gaining specific skills designed to equip students with the capability to go and work within their chosen sector.
Our Salford HND courses give you practical, vocational training and fast. The two-year qualifications are designed to provide a concentrated experience so you can hit the ground running when you start work. Offering students hands-on realistic training and delivery, the courses have been written by senior professionals in the industry to provide up-to-date, relevant knowledge of today’s industry challenges. The courses are also designed to help students develop ‘job-ready skills that will ultimately help them succeed in their career progressions. HNDs are intended to teach the technical elements of the students chosen fields and provide the practical skills needed to satisfy industry and employer’s needs. Fundamentally, we aim for students to gain first-hand experience through the completion of industry considered projects and directed study developing technical, contextual, and ethical knowledge and skill, rather than simply studying subject theories.
There are many reasons why the University of Salford is a fantastic place to study, from the state-ofthe-art learning facilities and inspiring course content to a unique location. Located in Greater Manchester, the University of Salford is a campus-based university, with our main campus just 2km outside of Manchester city centre and another at the heart of MediaCityUK, sharing a skyline with the BBC and ITV in Europe’s largest purpose-built digital hub. Historically, Salford was built with an entrepreneurial spirit, and we aim to reinforce this spirit in our courses. Professional practice and experience are at the heart of our university and courses and our students are encouraged to pursue industry experience. Many of our academics are industry professionals and open doors to industry networks through industry projects, guest lectures and site visits. With the BBC having recently announced a further 400 jobs moving to the North, Salford really is the place to be for Arts and Media students.
Overall, studying a HND is aimed to give options and opportunity; at the end of the course students have specific skills essential to pursue a career in their chosen career, but have also been given a taste of further study. All our HND students can top up their qualifications if they would like and complete a third year of study to obtain a full bachelor’s degree, or they can join the world of work. Essentially by studying a HND you get the best of both worlds.
If you would like to find out more about the HND courses at Salford, you can join us on Wednesday 31st March 2021 for our HND Information Event. You can register your interest here. Or if you have any other questions please email us at enquiries@salford.ac.uk.
