Welcome to the latest edition of the eMag. As the summer rolls in with warmer, longer days, we often face a paradox – more daylight to experience life and pack things in, and yet time seems to fly by as we work towards the end of the academic year! Just as we are working at our hardest, it is these coming weeks that will make a difference to the outcomes of one of the strangest academic years in the history of the country! Trying to keep going to the end of your course, preparing for subject assessments, completing course work, and all whilst keeping an eye on what happens next, can take its toll.
My advice is to try to maintain that focus for the final months – it will be worth it in the end. However, be mindful of your own mental health – don’t push too hard, perhaps ease off on your part-time job for a while, sleep well, try to keep a steady pace, and reach out for help (rather than bottling up your emotions) if you find yourself struggling. We all want the best for you and will do all we can to see you through the final term.
Five ways to improve stress and wellbeing The charity Mind are running a campaign called Stress LESS aimed at empowering young people to help reduce stress and tackle the stigma surrounding mental health. The campaign message us 'Take five; feel better' and features five simple steps to reduce stress levels over a five week period.
Along with the Stress Less campaign Mind website contains useful advice on improving wellbeing 'Five Ways to Wellbeing' click on the link below to find out more. https://www.cpslmind.org.uk/fiveways-wellbeing/

Student Spotlight Quantity Surveyor Scott’s Story I attended Long Road between 2012 and 2014 and studied Maths, Physics and Design & Technology. Through sixth form, I always had a keen interest in construction and knew I wanted to find a career path within the industry. I knew there were multiple professions across construction, but… being completely honest… until I came across ST1 in my second year of studying, I was not entirely sure what a Quantity Surveyor was! I was lucky enough to arrange some work experience with ST1 where I had the chance to see several construction projects underway, including a new sports training facility now used by England national sports teams, and a swanky new cinema complex. Seven years on, and I have not turned back! In my career so far, I have been able to work on some fascinating projects of all shapes and sizes across the country.
This has included multi-millionpound sky-scrapers in Central London, to new office blocks and luxury hotels. I have also achieved a first-class degree in Quantity Surveying whilst working full time and earning a salary, thanks to the support of the ST1 team. There is nothing more rewarding at work than seeing a construction project through from a few sketches and an empty site to the finished article, and know that you had a part to play in its creation. Construction projects are never the same, so if you are looking for a job that gives you the same thing from day to day, then this is probably not for you! But, if like me, you are looking for a rewarding career path that offers variety, new and exciting challenges, and you thrive working in a team, then I would highly recommend a career in Quantity Surveying.

Thinking about Gap Year
International work and travel programmes for students - CCUSA
So, what exactly are the jobs and what do you do? Basically, in a nutshell, you will be teaching or assisting something you have a passion/love for such as a Sport, Arts, Music, Performing Arts, Media (to name a few). CCUSA works with over 750 different camps in North America, and you get to choose which style of camp you work at and what you would teach/assist. Many people think you need to be a qualified teacher, Olympic standard or have a degree in the activity, but this is not the case (great if you do), we are just looking for people who are confident in passing on what ever knowledge you have – remember, you will be teaching/assisting children, not experts, so please do not worry, we have positions for EVERYONE! Americans love the British, especially the accent, you will be treated like royalty, and all this just makes it the most amazing environment to work in. Maybe the best part of this program is the people you meet, the friends that will last a lifetime, as you will be working with likeminded people from all around the world – America, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc etc, and all the international staff get to travel just like you afterwards.
When the job finishes
So, you have just worked 9 weeks having the most amazing time doing what you love, but when camp (your job) ends, it is time to let your hair down and enjoy the holiday part of your summer. You can now travel for up to 4 weeks – a road trip from coast to coast, the options are endless with your new friends.
Don't want to work with Children? If working with children is not your cup of tea, but you still want to experience working, living, and traveling in America or Canada, then our Work Adventures programs would be perfect. Our working adventures programs allows you the freedom to find your own job, or you can select an option where you select a job from our job directory – most of these jobs are in the tourism industry and resorts all around North America. From being a lifeguard at a country club in California, working your barista magic in Montreal, to providing a unique guest service in the National Park of Yosemite, you truly could turn hand to any type of work and reap the rewards/tips with that British accent they absolutely love over in North America. All the programs offer fun and adventure, but that is not the only thing you will get by participating, as these benefit you as a student or person starting your new career in ways you do not expect.
From developing new transferable skills (initiative, communications skills, budgeting, planning etc), to new life skills (being away from your loved ones and support bubble such as independence, initiative and maturity), to raising your cultural awareness (expanding your global network, and working and living in the local community) – all these will add to your ‘EMPLOYABILITY’ skills and are key when it comes to getting your first job, as employers are always looking for people who can bring something different and that stand out.
To be able to participate on these CCUSA programs, there are 3 sets of criteria: 1.You must 18 years of age by 1st June of the year you go away, 2.You must be able to leave/travel by 20th June, 3.You must be able to work at least 9 weeks.
Right now, a lot of people are still very anxious about travel due to Covid-19, and with travel bans still in place, and with the above criteria, it maybe that a lot of you reading this are still too young, BUT planning is key when doing these programs, so we are bringing this to your attention for 2022 or even 2023. If you are interested, please go to www.ccusa.co.uk for more detailed information about the programs (such as salaries, program fees and details facts about what is included), email us info@ccusa.co.uk or follow us on social media @ccusauk.
